Thinking of getting a tdi. I just want something reliable as what I’m used to.. I’ve been driving my gas tacoma for 9 years with the one problem being a u joint failure at 170k. Was a recall apparently lol. But I’m at 220k now and got it with 100k. My dad has a 13” 4.0 tacoma with 305k EVERYTHING is original. No timing chain no, no fluid changes other than the oil every 5-6k and it keeps running flawlessly despite having a constant 400 pounds in the back sometimes 3 full 55gallon drums in the bed! I think this Jetta fits the bill of being fun, reliable and cheap. I just am hoping they’re as good as everyone says like the Toyotas. I’d love to try out another brand Fosho

I have had many Toyota pickups and they are reliable. The TDIs have given me the same outcome though with reliability. Other than maintenance I haven’t had any huge issues so far. Haven’t left me stranded and have saved a lot on fuel mileage. Only thing you need to watch for is getting one that isn’t already worn out lol

Your take on what to check is solid in my books, having owned many ALH and BEW engined TDI cars.
I'm in Canada, and we're like the rust belt in the US: You're asking, or looking at the rockers/fenders in pictures, and in-person, right after checking on timing belt records or receipts.
The only thing about the mk4 interiors I'd add:
Black interiors seem to be more plentiful than the other two (grey, and beige). Keep that in mind, if you're intending to buy a car, and attempt to fix or swap better interior parts in.
Grey and especially, Beige interiors on these can look dirty and awful if neglected. And, some of the grey/beige interior parts aren't available new anymore. Or, now that the cars are 20-25 years old, in shorter supply in salvage yards or other sources.

No if done correctly it should not have check engine. I have a video series of me doing a manual swap on one of these. I would scan and see what it’s saying. It may be unrelated to the swap but if it’s related to the swap then I would watch through my video and make sure everything is done as far as sensors and stuff.
