The video that launched my own madness. And yes, charcoal and aluminum can touch if it's the charcoal from the preceding cathode of another cell. Ergo- an air battery voltaic pile. This is limited to a few cells else internal resistance causes heat. In my experience that's 3 cells. Salt water is a good choice. KOH makes more power but also more corrosion. Hi! If I may ask, why is it necessary to use the paper towel to prevent the aluminum foil and charcoal from touching?

@05_Belicia Tampubolon it's an ionic transfer that goes between paper towel and aluminum, not an electrical one. I can't say I understand it very well but it won't work without it. Thank you!

use better Washingsoda Na2CO3 with water as the Electrolyte then you will get 1.5 Volts and press a copperplate onto the Charcoal so you get much more current. ...

I've tried it. Graphite needs surface area, something activated charcoal has plenty of. Graphite will work but not as well or a as long.
