- In celebration of me reaching 5 million views on my TH-cam Channel, we wanted to do something very special and just a little bit different. The Andy Griffith show is one of my all time favorite TV shows and so we thought it would be neat to go and spend a night at the Andy Griffith Home Place which is the house that Andy grew up in. This was a neat experience for me and I hope you all will enjoy this tour of this special landmark in Mount Airy, NC. Thank you to all my viewers and subscribers for watching my videos! When Andy was a youngster, he went barefoot every day, and wore overalls with no shirt underneath. Lots of people in My Airy went to school with Andy.
I never knew Andy stayed in North Carolina
Andy grew up in Mt Airy NC and went to high school there as well.
I'm just curious is there a way to tour the home without booking/staying there?
I do not believe they offered that in the past and as this is operated by Hampton Inn I wouldn't think they would offer that now with the pandemic situation. You do get all the benefits of the Hampton Inn when you do stay in the house (free breakfast - you have to go to the actual Hampton Inn for that in the morning though which is just down the road a few blocks) and full access to the pool and fitnes center. When we stayed there, the price was around $170 for the one night. Prices do change depending on the seasons - I think it is higher during Mayberry Days for example.
Did any die in 1966 (age 31) or was that the time period he lived there.?
This is the home he grew up in and his parents still lived there for awhile after he graduated from high school and left town from what I have read about the house. His parents eventually moved to be closer to Andy from what I understood and this house was sold when they left. I could be mistaken but I believe that is what I have heard and read about the history of the house..
Everything was so pleasant. Until i seen that shotgun hanging on the wall. I was like Whoaaa....lol !!!

Long before Andy Taylor graced the tv screen I was a fan of Andy Griffith. In the late1950's my parents had several of his records. I listened to the football story every week for years. Still listen a couple times a year.
Thanks for filming this! I enjoyed watching his show, they don't make good shows anymore.

I've been here and I also saw the little tribute to Mayberry with Floyd's barber shop..It is a very happening place for the senior citizens that like to take bus tours of certain locations and I meant no disrespect by that comment..
I'm with you on the favorite show, at one time I think I could just about ace an Andy Griffith quiz word for word especially on certain episodes like barneys first car and the mountain wedding lol thank God I grew up during this time period, I really don't care if I have a television now or not today because there's nothing that interests me, nothing is funny anymore, they cuss their way through movies and shows now no need for talent just be filthy mouthed and you're hired.
Any tv i watch is classic tv series dvds like Adam 12, Andy Griffith show, Family Affair, the 1970's Emergency show. My parents have helped me find some really great shows that were before my time. :)

I took a small group to Mt. Airy last week. At the museum, they had fun having their picture taken with the statue outdoors and the cardboard cutout ins the lobby. The guys got a kick out of the cutout of Thelma Lou kissing Barney on the cheek, where they stuck their heads in for the "kiss"!The museum itself was mostly newspaper articles and movie posters. The admission was $6 (2016) and included other things we did not have time for. But then we went to Main Street, to the courthouse and jail (which the Internet said was closed on Saturdays, but it was open.) Both the jail (courthouse) and the nearby service station were free. Next to it is the general store, where you can buy country items and souvenirs. I had been told it was all commercialized, but we had a nice time and only had to pay for museum admission. In the future, we would have like to have spending money for the general store. And the scenery was so pretty. If we could have stayed longer, there is a park nearby (Pinnacle Mountain, maybe?) and also Pilot Mountain. As far as eating, we packed a lunch and ate in a shady area at the museum, but noticed there is a Subway in town. I hope to take the group again with a couple more who could not go last time. They love watching Andy Griffith every evening from 5-8 pm.

I understand he wasn't treated very well by the folks in Mt. Airy when he was young, and after he became famous, they fell all over themselves embracing him. True?
I think there were some hard feelings from earlier years as Andy's family was considered from the wrong side of the tracks but there were some in Mt Airy who were good friends to Andy when he was growing up there. Andy actually talks and jokes about the early years in his hometown at the dedication ceremony of the Andy Griffith Blvd in Mt Airy. (see the link in description of video from this event) I think those hard feelings were mended with this event as Andy got to stay at his childhood home and memories came back of the good times he had there with his parents. Time has a way of healing past hurts especially when one can prove the critics wrong within that time.

Captainaustin811 we did the patrol car tour as well. This has been on our to do list for awhile and we finally manage it :) It was a neat experience and I'm so glad we were able to stay here. Andy Griffith had said in interview that when he stayed here in 2002 that the house had changed from when he lived there. When his dad bought the house, there was only 3 rooms total and he slept in the kitchen on a cot. There was also a fireplace in living room when Andy lived there. The chimney can still be seen on top of the house but the fireplace has been either taken out or walled over. We are thinking where the chimney is located that the fireplace would of been on back wall of living room and outer chimney has been walled in by closet in storage room. you can check out photos we took on my Facebook page.

I don't think the way they do the rates is for how many people but rather they charge a certain rate for the night for the house. Rates vary per time of year I believe. We paid $179 for one night which wasn't too bad when splitting the cost with my grandparents. We had 4 in our group.

No. Hampton Inn in Mount Airy owns it and rents it out like a room. You can go to the hotel and get free breakfast use fitness and pool areas.
