Ubisoft's MASSIVE Missed Opportunity at an Assassin's Creed Black Flag SEQUEL

  • Assassin's Creed Black Flag was released in 2013 to great acclaim. Many loved the pirate setting and naval combat, so much so that Ubisoft knew they had to capitalize and make another pirate-themed game. One would think the obvious choice was to make a sequel to an Assassin's Creed Black Flag but instead what we're getting is Skull and Bones...

    I think the lack of sequels is due to Ubisoft’s corporate big suits always chasing the next big thing, and not building on what they already have. This is because chasing trends is more easily profitable than revisiting old projects.
    Sequels in the form of trans media (comics, novels, etc) are mainly overseen by Ubisoft’s development teams, who have more passion for the series than the corporate suits who run the company.

      That and it’s their ideas that they can take a small dlc concept and blow it up to be a whole different game to make them more money. They’re thinking in terms of quick money, not long money. They wanna pump out new settings/characters and not give it any thought about lingering on a protagonist too long. It’s dumb cause Bayek, Edward, Alexos, maybe Arno and even Adawele could’ve had multiple games. But with that said…
      I think they came up with the whole idea of new assassins no matter what instead of sequels because of Adewale. I can’t remember when we got a completely new assassin in a DLC that was interesting enough to get a sequel and instead of making him have his own full game, he got tacked onto a dlc. They probably said “never again” to a secondary assassin being a dlc and just decided to have them in a different game to not miss out on a big pay day. Even the idea of Basim was a DLC but I bet once it was taken to ubi leadership, they remembered missing out on “adewale new game money” and forced the dev team to just make a new game around Basim.

    AC 3 and AC 4 are definitely two games that absolutely need sequels. Seeing Connor rebuild the colonial brotherhood would be so satisfying and nice too see. He lived to an old age so he definitely has a lot of untold story to his life. And as was said in the video, Edward's full transformation to greedy pirate to assassin and family man to his death.

      AC 3 got two prequels and then the story ended in 3 they can't really do a sequel

    • @falco5150
      @falco5150 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AC3 had some serious missed opportunities and missed calculations (such as the 3 hour long tutorial). While I look back on that game fondly, I remember being extremely disappointed at how little the revolution era and events were actually explored (or not explored at all). Hell, two of the battles that were actually in promotional material, ended up being little more than mediocre quicktime events. Key battles such as Setauket, Saratoga, Yorktown, Trenton were completely missing.
      But I can't hate on the game because AC3 lead to AC4 which, in my opinion, was the franchise at it's peak. Unity was fun but it was plagued by bugs, microtransactions, a god awful companion app, and multiplayer only events; so...if you were a solo player, you completely missed out on that content. Not only that but it was the start of the severely dumbed down parkour system. Granted, most of the bugs were later fixed and the multiplayer only elements were opened up to everyone. Its a much better game today than it was at release but still.

    • @hfar_in_the_sky
      @hfar_in_the_sky ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. I have my gripes with AC3, but honestly I feel like there was still so much potential in continuing Connor's story, and the fact we never did with the possible exception of _Tyranny of Washington_ is IMO one of the biggest missed opportunities of all time

    • @hfar_in_the_sky
      @hfar_in_the_sky ปีที่แล้ว

      As for AC 4, I personally think the game ended pretty well on it's own but I sequel still wouldn't have been a bad thing. Heck, there's a webtoon that's officially licensed by Ubisoft that continues Edward's story and has him adventuring in Macau and has him fighting templar ninjas! Yes, it sounds over the top when I write it out, but imagine a game where you're playing Edward fighting Templar ninja in a 18th century Chinese trade city! It'd be awesome!

    I feel in a Black Flag sequel we could have seen Edward settling down in London with the Kenway manor being the settlement we can upgrade and decorate, searching for a Piece of Eden while expanding the Brotherhood in London, training new assassins, studying the observatories, confronting Woodes Rogers and Edward's late wife Caroline's fiancé while meeting Duncan Walpole's cousin (I believe), and maybe working with assassin Miko and seeing Adewale again.

      The story of edward after black flag was only released after the game, so, if they wanted, they could've made a sequel instead. However, it wouldn't make a ton of sense to bring edward back to the seas considering his choice at the end of the game. A sequel I could see however would be a sequel to black flag but with someone else. The only drawback being that black flag already told the story of the sunset of the golden age of pirates, so it would be kinda hard to pull off considering all the important figures of the time were already dead or retired

    Edwards spent his post-Black Flag days investigating Precursor sites to locate the Grand Temple, he wrote the journal that Birch and Haytham have in III. There’s the story, and offers exploration of Mayan ruins proper as well as Precursor locations. Throw in a chase for a macguffin of Eden where Edward has to draw on his pirate skills and that gives the villain. It could be Assassin’s Creed meets Uncharted.

    As greedy and full of themselves as Ubisoft are, one thing I do commend them for doing was greenlighting something like AC Unity. Conor, Edward and Bayek deserved sequels where they were established master assassins like Ezio was in brotherhood. I think how the system in odyssey where you had seamless movement from naval to land traversal without any loading screens would have been a good system to implement an Edward sequel where he was a full fledged assassin. Or even a trilogy ending with his life in London instead of the Frye twins.
    The whole settlement system they had with Eivor should have been a sequel for Bayek building the first Assassin network and they would have even given us the syndicate dynamic where we can switch through the Assassins in Egypt playing as Bayek and in Rome playing Aya and we get to see her as Amunet.
    I don’t know how they didn’t think of any of these. The ideas and sequels practically write themselves. Who wouldn’t buy a Connor, Edward or Bayek sequel. Would be so cool to see how they grow into mature full fledged assassins.

      Them meeting Assassins and Hidden Ones we’ve met and played as since many stories revolve around or have a Piece of Eden as a crucial element of the plot. Seeing the formation of the Hidden Ones by Bayek and Aya, the shift in how the ideology is perceived by the group at Masyaf under Al Mualim, Altaïr and Abbas, the rise of the Order of the Ancients and their evolution into the Knights Templars then Abstergo. Being functionally immortal would be mentally tiring after centuries of conflict and war, using the passage of time to chart how this impacts the Eagle Bearer is another angle. If Kassandra ever met Basim it’d be quite ironic given the means of her longevity is the same force that will manipulate his means of revival centuries later.

    We need sequels for main Assassin characters again. As much as I love Ezio, he holds an unfair advantage over all the characters that came after him by having 3 main games under his belt. According to Google search: The game that follows the first mate from Assassin's Creed Black Flag is Freedom Cry. Freedom Cry is set over a decade after the main campaign of Black Flag and follows Adéwalé, Edward's former quartermaster who became an Assassin. Black Flag received critical acclaim and was one of the best-selling games of 2013, with over 15 million copies sold as of 2020.

    As Ubisoft I would honestly change the lore around Edward and have him survive the templar attack. This way we could have a trilogy of him. • @knifeofdunwall
    @knifeofdunwall ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, I really enjoy your channel. Keep up the great work! I think the reason why a sequel to Black Flag wouldn't work is because a large part of its appeal is about the pirate fantasy. This is why Rogue's gameplay didn't hit the same way Black Flag did despite being the same. It's also why Edward doesn't become an assassin until the very end.
    Also, the release schedule for AC was annual which means by the time Ubisoft realised how popular Black Flag was it was too late because Unity was already in development and would be coming out the following year. The annual release schedule didn't really allow Ubisoft to implement any of the lessons learned and I think that's partly why they've slowed down on new releases in favour of live service-like DLCs while we wait for the next instalment.

    Skull and Bone's primary issue was the constant change in creative direction. The original E3 reveal was what purchased the hype from the fan base initially. The game's creative direction was abandoned and changed multiple times after that in favor of a free to play model.
    All they had to do was add the multiplayer element to the naval portions of AC4. Then after they ironed out the kinks, they could have branched out into a new franchise.

    As you can show Edwards rise to being co-leader of the Brotherhood in London.
    Can show the decline or fall of it seems to be cyclical as we know from Valhalla the Brotherhood has lost Lunden before.
    We saw that with Syndicate of the Fryes having to rebuild it up again.

They could have made Black Flag sequel in England instead of Syndicate. They could have given Bayek & Aya a whole trilogy instead of leaving Origins with a pointless sequel-baiting open ending. Making AC a disjointed anthology was a massive mistake.

    Tbh they wrote such an inglorious end for Edward I doubt they care enough to ever pick up on that story. But the codex he wrote, which Evie Frye finds in the Kenway mansion in Syndicate, that's where Edward apparently recorded all the Isu temples and artefacts and secrets he discovered for the Brotherhood. He went from pirate to archaeologist and Master Assassin and that's great material for a sequel.

    Ubi could pull a Zelda, and the sequel to Black Flag could create a new timeline - one where Edward Kenway lives, so then he can have more games. This would also further change the timeline further into the future, and this timeline can have it's own games. Also, this could be just one of the many possibilities that Desmond and Layla are exploring in the Grey. The Grey is like an animus but it can look into possibilities in the past, present and future instead of just the past memories. That's what Assassin's Creed Infinity might involve.

      Or maybe, edward faked his death to hunt down the templars into the shadows. Going back to a life of roaming the seas. Maybe not in the carribeans, or at least not the same area as we've never gotten two games taking place at the same place in a relatively close time period (except ac 3 and rogue, just with rogue having less than a year of development time, it's no wonder they had to reuse a lot of assets). I'm not too sure, but I believe that some pirates left for the african coasts when the repression became too harsh, so it might take place there. The game would see edward fully revert to being a pirate, but for the good cause this time, as he would need to become the scourge of the seas to permanently put an end to the templars' traffick., even wearing the outfit that he is said to wear in his ginal days in black flag. After years, his fame would be such that it would grab the attention of a rising templar master, haytham kenway. During one final stand, haytham would confront his father, leaving him mortally wounded and stranded on an island. Adewale who would've gotten word of the upcoming attack on edward would try to save his old friend, watching him die in front of him, refusing to give the name of his killer, not wanting to see his best friend and son face each other

    Altair and Connor should have a Sequel there is so much blank slate between Altair timeline and Ezio. So many story to be made where Altair went after being banished from Acre. Syndicate and Unity will have a great story if only they have been a connection from AC3, like after Connor was finished in America it would have been great if he traveled to Europe and continue to pursue the remaining Templars so therefore the reason that another branch of the Brotherhood was existing there. That would ultimately connects the Story of the twins and Arno just like how Ezio story connects to Atair story. That's what makes Ezio story great because it connects to the story of Altair. And if ever there would be a sequel to Black Flag the protagonist will not be Edward since he died in the ending and Haytham was taken by the Templars the famous ship battle mechanics would be out of the picture in the sequel. Connor's story should been told after BlackFlag how he went to europe and build another Brotherhood there so the Twins and Arno would have a mentor thing like how Ezio sees altair as a mentor just by knowing that he was a Grand Assassin even though Ezio and Altair never met physically.

    The funny thing is that Ubisoft didn't even need to do an Assassin's Creed Black Flag sequel and just used the mechanics for Black Flag for maybe a spin off game or created a new IP (Not Skull and Bones) where we're just a pirate.
    As for an Edward Sequel? Perhaps, though I do believe that his story had a good ending despite him having a lot left to be told before his death. But I'd have loved more AC games with Black Flag's mechanics, maybe more along the lines of Rogue where we just play as an Assassin that is tasked with travelling the globe. But still, it would have been nice to potentially see Haythem again.

    Wouldn’t mind annual games like the ezio series if they expanded on the character stories, not just a plain open world where it’s a chore to move about. If they keep the games shorter and develop story way more, story will always trump “discovery” in a grey sandbox, ahem Valhalla, cough. That being said, my favourite acs were probably 2, revelations and unity. Chuck in origins in there as well for the setting

    Black Flag should have spawned into a new series of open world pirate games. Single player pirate games. Maybe a few hints to assassin's creed but just games about pirates in open worlds with naval combat. They could had like 3 successful games by now based on what black flag on its own started.

The biggest complaint about ac3 intro was the lack of assassin stuff. This edward prequel would have literally NO assassin stuff

    A sequel would definitely have happened due to how popular BF was, but for one reason: Skull and Bones - at least in my opinion.
    AC:BF is more or less a guaranteed seller for them, with people wanting a sequel in the same setting. That would have taken the shine off of Skull and Bones, and they didn’t want that. I bet they wish they’d gone down the sequel route now, considering the development hell SaB is in. That’s what I think.
    Edit:
    I hadn’t watched when I commented. You pretty much say the same here.

    It's only a matter of time before Ubisoft starts to appeal to previous protagonists nostalgia. All companies utilize nostalgia sooner or later, like Capcom returning to the old Resident Evil remakes/era or Disney bringing Star Wars back to the original trilogy era for the a big chunk of their content (Andor/Fallen order and so on).
