I can't believe the dumb comments that I am reading. Why so much criticism towards the video? The video is a work of art. It's not a history lesson. It seems that the black nun has a dream to become a VJ. She is working hard in order to reach her goal. Lighten up people. Try to take something positive from such a beautiful music video. Devendra is a musical genius!
@MAN WOLF Who cares about her skin color? Its all about the song
see my link above. Hildegard Von Bingen was an amazing woman that lived over 800 years ago and if it wasn't for this video by devendra banhart, I would never have known about her so...thanks to this song I dug deep and Googled her name and learned about the real St Hildgard. Quite Impressive to say the least
We can do a black guy making Confucius, and a white guy making Ghandi. Also an asian guy making Malcom X. Right?
The female voice at the beginning of the song says: '' i told you this would happen, that's the way she is'' , in Serbian language. o.o
+Djurdja Garcevic Devendra's girlfriend is Serbian (that's how his album "Mala" got its name)
pozdrav :)
hvala na info:D
Anytime ;)
Mala is also spanish for Bad girl or bad woman tho....
the end sounds like she said prositute but serbian is always different
Just watched Hardcore Henry, had to find this tune.
Same here :)
Giancarlo Biundo same here 2

Jesus baby, I was talking to them!
Ego? Higher self? Ego? Higher self?
Such a beautiful song. Brings me bliss.
This guy has ruined my life for years by being so awesome
Definitely one of the best songs and videos of 2013.
This is so goddamn beautiful, I can't deal rn
I was so surprised to hear this in Hardcore Henry!
I could not agree more with you, my friend.
уес
Hardcore henry thank you
Love this video, love the klaus nomi spot too.
Devendra never dissapoints!
In the spirit of Hildegard von Bingen
What a genious song and vid! I like so much! This song gives a little bit of the rebellious life of St. Hildegard. She wrotes songs and poems and was very critical to popes, cesars and kings. This video shows a modern form of Hildegard. Thank you!
We need a white guy making Malcom X, please.
Fake new. Pope Eugenio III had great consideration of Hildegard and her writings. The pope carried on corrispondence with her too.
"my ego wants to kill you but my higher self doesn't." - Hippie Jimmy
Yeah, I'm sure Hildegard von Bingen would have liked this. So inspiring.
She was not black. Next song, a black guy making Confucius?
@@mrcosta6963
Yes, it's inspiring. The skin color does not matter, what is important is the meaning of the video. Do you know how revolutionary a woman abbess, poet, philosopher, composer, botanist was at that time? She is considered a woman of science in the eleventh century. At a time when women's interpretation of scripture and participation in society was prohibited, this woman communicated with the papacy and statesmen.
PS: From today's point of view, Hildegard von Bingen's science is more like superstition.
@@veronicacaicedo2632 I know who Hildegard was. The creator of this video is the one who don´t, it seems. For the next video, a black Albert Einstein would be OK with you? What about making a video about Malcolm X with a white actor? Super OK?
short and beautiful. love it

OMG she is gorgeous !!!
merci nova ! again again again
Que buena rola!!
Oh gosh this is so good
Has anyone else noticed the near resemblance of this track with Warhaus - Leave With Me and/or Warhaus - Machinery, I can't decide if it's one or the other or both but they definitely have the same notes.
th-cam.com/video/1Q9e6-VnU9g/w-d-xo.html
Yes, the vocal style for sure but this one flows better it's gotta sultry groove. The warhaus one is a bit annoying less fluid and the video is just moving encapsulated hipster photography. I hear it though
Who is the Hildegard of the video? She is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my life
it's Jodie Smith!
She is a Catholic saint. She composed music, was an herbalist and wore many other hats. She was rather " radical" for her time being a nun and all.Her music is beautiful.
love this video!
Loving this Video! Classic!
ya casi en Bogotá :)
Compared with the music and designs from Hildegard herself, this video means nothing. Soon this almost non-song will be forgotten. Hildegards songs will go on.
considering no one knows who the fuck Hildegard is, I think Devendra might have a bit of a head-start.
Hildegard is not in for a competition. That would be painful for Banhart anyway. But if you don't know the art of Hildegard, just, start right, now exploring it. Just give a try. Greetings
samdavjunjun Head start? Over 800 years late to that starting block… but as pieter pointed, it's no race or competition. Apparently Devendra "knows who the fuck Hildegard is", thus the reference, as do many. Why not embrace the knowledge/discovery of an artist unknown to you, especially one endorsed by an artist you respect? Shitting all over her just second hand insults that which you claim to enjoy, especially without ever giving it a try out of stubborn laziness. I had never heard of Devendra until now actually, and clicked excitedly because of the von Bingen title. Disappointed at first, but enjoyed this anyhow. Not sure it will still be listened by millions 860 years from now, but it was a nice little tune.
samdavjunjun This is the best response I've read in a while.
@@diademoflead Ignorance bliss...
No idea how excited I was when you had the Klaus Nomi lookalike
A song about a nun becoming a VJ definitely deserves a music video. This was a nice surprise. I still love music videos. I've been making mixes and watching them on my computer/TV, but TH-cam ads are annoying. I was wondering, if there are there still any good music video programs?
Hi, excuse my ignorance, is VJ the same as singer? what is its meaning?
Devendra is great
Devendra Power!

💞
This was a journey
this is 🔥 🔥
Love the song and have been listening to it for a long time. In cases like that, a new video seems distracting.
Lovely track.Just watched Hardore Henry and tempted to overthrow my government and play this song when i put up a new flag on the hill.Maybe even have Jimmy at my inauguration.Great track!!!
She's working on MVV = MTV.
What is Klaus Nomi doing here? :o
She's a VJ and he's being interviewed...His career was also very brief and he was German as was the Awesome saint Hildegard.
ameeeeeisin!
i'll seen him in 7 days :D!
ona je prosto takva. :)
What other song does this sound like? Especially the guitar riffs...
all along the watchtower
Judy Clay & william bell - Private number and Lucio Battisti - Amarsi un po'
INSPIRING......SO , THAT I LEARNED MYSELF A THING OR TOO ABOUT THis sT. hILDEGARD. (superb video, excellent music!) muchos gracias
piękne!

basically sister act in reverse
Yeah, yeah, we get it. It's the XXI century, almost every aspect familiar to man has been suggested/ debated/ explained/ improvised/ put into a music video etc. Art is rarely original nowadays, people have always felt the need to invoke comparisons blahblah. And yeah, yeah, some creations are the result of inspiration blahblah.
Hardcore Henry brought me here...!!!
Eerily hooky: cinematically and musically.
because it was like, literally, added just today, literally
Devendra chiquito mi amor :3

oh,hello! How are you?
Why Hildegard had her headaches. She was a thwarted artist--thwarted by the strictures imposed upon her sex during the time she lived. Her headaches and her visions were the result of her oppression. If her creativity had not been so confined and suppressed, who would she have been? What would she have done?
*****
Yes, totally true (I'm the same, without structure there is but an abyss that consumes and one drowns). Perhaps then it is relative to a persons circumstances and needs. Structure, both good and 'bad' dependent on variables.
Big difference between strictures and structure, guys. Especially the way we're using them. Structure should come from within; at least the choice should be with the individual. It should not be imposed. Strictures are arbitrary limits placed on you by others. When she was alive, she could have been a wife or a nun. Those were her "choices." Ponder that. She was, in actuality, an artist and a visionary.
She didn't just have two choices. Obviously. She was an artist AND a visionary AND a healer AND a scientist AND a composer AND a playwright AND a teacher and authority figure AND a nun (and considered a saint and "doctor of the church"). And other things as well. She even invented a secret language. If you think she was any less a genuine nun than genuine artist then you probably haven't read what she actually wrote about herself and her church. For example Hildegard opposed the movement of the heretical cátari (Cathars) group who advocated a drastic reform of the Church in their intention to combat the shortcomings and failures of the clergy, many of whom were hypocrites. Hildegard sharply criticized them for trying to subvert the essence of the Church. She instructed them that the only genuine renewal could come from sincere repentance, obedience and conversion. In a sense, she herself claimed the opposite of what you wrote, of how important and necessary the outward structure was, and in her view it was not arbitrary at all. It's fine for you to disagree with her, but these were her own beliefs and opinions as she chose to express them.
And her creativity was not "confined and suppressed", it was encouraged and celebrated in her own lifetime. That's why she was able to accomplish so much. She criticized emperors, the pope and other authority figures and they still admired her and sought her advice, because they respected her.
Yeeeees!!! :)
