As someone who played goalie in high school at the tail end of the stand-up era (late 80's) it's crazy to see all the old footage of the goalies just flopping around and barely able to stand up after making saves. The grace of modern goalies' movements is like they are playing an entirely different sport.
Not for nothing but equipment now weighs like a tenth of what it did in the 70s and 80s

It was 1982. I was 11 years old and at my very first professional Hockey Game (from Pittsburgh and LONG time Penguins fan). The Penguins were playing the Rangers and Dion was in net. I was about 5 rows behind the Penguins net with my older brother. There were a bunch of hilarious drunk guys about 3 rows behind me really giving it to Dion. Dion was the Penguins All-Star that year and they were saying, "Hey Dion!!...Big All Star, Dion!". Yeah, Dion..You're a Big All Star"! very sarcasitcally. They also called him a quitter and other names like "p*ssy". The Rangers lit up the Pens for muti goals (led by Run Dugay) and Dion finally had it...in the middle of the 3rd, he turned around, took off his glove and gave the middle finger to the guys behind me and yelled something in French. It was great...and a moment I'll always remember
There is a story (from a hockey news special) about Gary "suitcase" Smith who during a game for Vancouver he got pulled by the coach, was so angry that he left the arena, got into his car and drove home. Still wearing full equipment! 😊

I used to be a co-driver in rally races. After one race, we ended up on the podium. Since I'd checked out of the hotel that morning, I drove home right after the ceremony at the end.
I don't drink but I was covered in champagne and wearing a racing suit. I was really hoping I wouldn't get pulled over or run into a check stop.
I would have passed any test they gave me, but I didn't want to have to go through the whole process.
A goalie should be pulled after 4 or 5 goals. Keeping him in for 9 seems like your trying to embarrass the guy. Sometimes after 1 or 2 soft goals a good coach will realize the guy dosent have it that night and get him out asap. Under no circumstances someone should be left in for 9 goals.

A few years ago, I remember Tremblay , as a hocky pundit, criticzing Tortorella for not retiring his goalie earlier totally unaware or the irony. I thought it was the funniest thing ever
Fortunately, for Qu, um I mean Colorado, Roy was traded a few days later and he would soon win the 1996 cup for the Nord, um, I meant Avs, and had his number retired by both teams (idk why Montreal did because the quitting incident)
Tremblay and Roy hated each other. Tremblay left Roy in intentionally. He knew what he was doing.

Uber Eats brings Roy and Tremblay together phenomenally.
Al Smith was in the locker room all set to take the net as the starter. He was then informed by coach Floyd Smith that Edwards would start. Edwards had arrived just before face off from Hershey and was never told he was even starting. Smith had taken all the shots in warm up so Edwards had no reason to believe he would even play. Smith wished Edwards good luck in the locker room and Edwards said “why?”. It was Smith who actually told Edwards he was starting. After the anthem Smith hopped off the bench waved to owner Seymour Knox and yelled “See ya!”. Edwards played brilliantly with no backup on the roster winning 6-2 over the North Stars. A toughs spot to be in for your first NHL game. The whole situation was handled terribly by the Sabres. Smith deserved to start at least one game before giving way to Edwards.
I always found Patrick Roy's meltdown funny as hell. Every time I see video of it, all I hear is Eric Cartman screaming "SCREW YOU GUYS, I'M GOING HOME!!" at the coach.🤣😂🤣

I can understand Dion’s decision as someone who struggles with hypertension and extreme anxiety. It can sometimes feel like you are about to burst into a million pieces from embarrassment and a fight or flight response scenario goes through your head that may not really exist in anyone else’s head. Sometimes this can make me perform better, gain my focus, and give me adrenaline, but sometimes it makes me walk off the job, break up with a girlfriend, or go silent for a day. It’s a very helpless feeling. Don’t assume Dion made the decision to quit as if he was in his right mind when he did it.
And as a goalie,you know when you're "off your game"

Yeah, Michel's story is kinda hard to fault him with. The Nordiques were in a down spot, Dion was probably getting blamed, and that takes one hell of a mental toll, just ask Matt Murray. At least he got remembered via MAF and Maxime Lagace with Lagace's mask last season.

I was actually watching that red wings game as it happened. My family was super happy cause we never could score much on roy and we were finally blowing them out. And I remember when it showed him have those 2 or 3 words to the coach. Next thing ya know he was on the avalanche/quebec
And won the Stanley Cup the next year for the final fuck you

I was taught to always have the highest respect for the goalie. The goalie plays the most stressful position in the sport.
Give that goalie room to stretch, get ready, only talk to the goalie when he asks. The goalie is the last line of the team's defense.
I don't think modern teams keep up this tradition.

Man, ice hockey is so different now than it was even in the 90s. I'm glad I'm watching this era and not those, it's far faster, skilled and a lot more enjoyable in my opinion. It just looks so slow in the old footage. And man, those old school hockey masks are straight up creepy bro. I'm not surprised they used em' for Jason Vorhees.
I agree the players today are faster and more skillful, but the game overall was FAR more entertaining back then.

Dion had a decent time as a penguin. I remember him playing in the All star game..some decent stats.

Roy was right , he was left in the crease to be humiliated by the coach that no one in montreal wanted nor liked as a coach . Dion on an other side had some mental issues not well treated i cannot blame him and actually i liked him as he was a very good goalie , those were not quitting on a whim

And fail every day to realize that we are all human beings and we have limits and there's only so much that a lot of us are willing to take before we just have had enough..And there's absolutely nothing wrong with having limits and boundaries.

I was 14, playing Goalie for a Hockey Team, I let some stupid other end of the ice shot go in between my legs. My coach went irate, I stripped off my pads and equipment and left.
I had to play a dek hockey game once and I had to play goal using an ild goalie MASK instead if a helmet. It was terrible. And it was made for ice hockey. Still hurt like hell getting hit with the ball. Couldn't imagine a puck. I was a nervous wreck everytime I faced a shot. Lol. BUT the mask was painted to look exactly like Dions penguins mask. So that was sweet. I can't believe I played the whole game. But I didn't really have a choice.

It must be a Buffalo thing because Vontae Davis of the Bills also retired at halftime.
Roy was so mismanaged by Montreal after they won the 93 Cup. They traded one of their best defensemen in Eric Desjardins as well as underutilized Winger John LeClair (who would go on to have 3 straight 50 goal seasons in Philly) for playmaking winger Mark Recchi.
The Habs needed a top flight defender as well as a consistent goal scorer far more than a playmaker (and to be fair, Mark Recchi was VERY good).
Getting rid of Desjardins left the cupboard bare as the Habs bet on the wrong player in Patrice Brisebois, an above average to good offensive defenseman with no real standout skills. Desjardins would end up becoming a 5 time all star who made at least 3 All-NHL teams in the last 90's.
Trade killed the Habs. On top of that the Habs picked up Pierre Turgeon. Now I love Turgeon but he was a 1 way player at best who could rarely take his man off the puck. Roy saw a 30% increase in shots on goal from the end of the 93 season to the beginning of the 95-96 season. He was just getting bombarded. He had asked the Habs to find him some defensive help but the Habs did nothing.
Roy was pissed. He quietly stewed in anger at how the Habs just blew up his defense. Nobody blamed him when he blew up after a 9 GA performance. It was bad management on top of bad front office moves.
Now, I am an old school Nordiques fan who transplanted when they moved to Colorado. I never would have thought this move would have went down let alone for who the Avs gave up to get him. Kovalenko was a useful 2 way player and a good 2nd or 3rd line guy. Rucinsky had potential to be a good 2nd line guy but not much more and Thilbault, the jewel of the trade, actually showed a lot of potential. He even looked good on Montreal after the trade but he was basically put into the same lineup that drove Roy insane. He was pummeled which in turn affected his confidence as well as led to injury issues. I still think Thilbault could have been an All-Star caliber goalie eventually but that move to Montreal basically was the beginning of the end for his young career. He was never ever the same player that we saw promise in at Quebec/Colorado.
Man, the Habs went from essentially the Boston Celtics of the NHL with a front office that constantly made great moves to a bunch of guys who were always playing behind the rest of the league.
Dion was weird as a Penguin. He wouldn't talk to the media and if he was having a bad game he would bang on the glass at the fans behind the net.

Patrick Roy and The Montreal Canadiens. The Canadiens were to blame for why Roy stopped playing. It was the controversial trade to the former Quebec Nordiques turn Colorado Avalanche in 1995 - 96. So beloved he was, in Montreal.

Roy was obviously being humiliated and Bergeron's 'bully' behaviour was notorious. As for Dion walking off...Quebec had a dismal team. I am not sure about the shots against stats but it was unreasonably high arguably among the highest in the league at that time. That is a great way to shorten your career. Most of the expansion teams had terrible first decades but in my memory Quebec was the worst of the worst. The saddest part is when Quebec finally had a great team they relocated to Colorado.
That seems quite bizarre! Aside from AB, I hadn't ever heard of any pro athlete do that. I play beer league hockey, and my team had that happen once, where a goalie quit after one period. He was new to the team, first game to start the season. And during the game, he started ordering the D around, telling players where they should stand and whatnot. And during the first intermission, he made some more comments and one of our veterans told him to "shut up and get back to your crease", or something to that effect. Then he stormed off in a huff and we never saw him again! It was really odd, to say the least!
I was goalie too. I never liked playing goalie but I was good. My friends would beg me to play. But I didn't like playing, preferred baseball and football. so I mostly only played the games that mattered. Like if a gave up a goal or two in a game that didn't matter, id pretend to get mad against my post and get the pull. I was there to win 'ships. I wouldve quit if they kept me in there.

Roy did not 'get upset and get pulled.' He was upset because he wasn't pulled sooner. No coach with a shred if integrity would leave their star goalie in the net for a blow out. Roy should have been pulled after the fourth goal. Leaving him in net beyond that was to embarrass him and he was too good of a goalie to to that. The person who should have been fired was the coach. I say that, even though my two favorite teams are the Leafs and whoever is playing Montreal. Roy was the best goalie on the planet at that time and he did not deserve to be left in the net for 9 goals. He was having a bad night and the coach chose to embarrass him.

I don't blame these player one bit. Coaches and management can make life very difficult for players at any levels people in power tend to lay blame on others instead of themselves. And many coaches and management make decisions that are the worst choice for a team and then they lay it on the players.
There are no bad teams, only bad leadership.

Never said that. I know that.. I was simply explaining why his doesn’t technically count, as he didn’t quit mid game. He was instructed to leave the game and then he quit.

as a goalie has been on the short end of "Mixups" that left my little hockey team against travel and semi-pro teams.
I have been in leagues where our team was set up to lose because of those mixups, felt like just walking off, but I could never leave my team like that...
These goalies must have not liked their team so much, as well as the situation they were in.
