I can sympathize with Ken Shamrock...I had a heart spasm due to high blood pressure a few years back, mimicking the symptoms of a heart attack. It's painful and debilitating and scary as hell. No way could you keep fighting, and no way would you even want to try to.

Yeah that was my favorite one off this list, that’s how all MMA fans and practitioners should think. In the UFC obviously the objective is to destroy your opponent until the referee stops the fight... but corners should know when to throw the towel in more. It’s just a better investment than your fighter taking brain damage

When you tap out, you've technically said "This is a fight I don't want to continue anymore." As I'm not against tapping out, I'm also not against someone taking a major beating and then deciding they've had enough. At least that way, they can look forward to returning to the ring again healthy to try another day.

I think a mention worth this list would be Jiri Prochazka vs Vadim Nemkov as they are really exciting prospects (Nemkov fighting for the title in Bellator and Prochazka recently KOed Volkan). They met in a Rizin tournament semi-finals in 2015, fought a brutal 10 minute first round with lots of back and forth and after that, Nemkov refused to go to the second round citing exhaustion. Quite an interesting move, considering what was on the line (I recall there was a rumour was that the prize money for the winner of that tournament was 500k$). Prochazka talked about this in some interviews, essentialy saying that at the end of the round, he stood up quicky, smiled intensely at Nemkov and told him something along the lines that he's looking for the second round (even though he was exhausted, but didn't want to show that). Apparently, that broke Nemkov's will and he refused to continue :D

He's fantastic against brawlers who look to trade (at which point he can just hover against the fence and counter OHKO them early, with the occasional stutter-step blitz for good measure), and can stall out folks who won't persistently engage and let him keep his gas tank (e.g., Wonderboy), but if you have a decent jab/body attack and can sustain pressure, he's been shown to tap out mentally, and that's been the case long before he became champ.

That first one reminds me of when in 1982 ric flair went down to Puerto Rico to wrestle. He was wrestling Puerto Rico's biggest wrestling star at the time. Roc was supposed to win the match to retain the nwa world title, but during the match ric realised that if he did win he match, he wouldnt be leaving alive. So he changed the plans and dropped the title to the puerto Rican wrestler (sorry I dont know his name) and If I'm remembering correctly the Puerto Rican wrestler forfeited the belt back to ric because the nwa champion had to make appearances all over the world and didn't want to leave his home.
Back when wrestling was still good.

Little story for y'all, not 100% confirmed but I believe my sources. When Brandao trained in Albuquerque at Jacksons he became close friends with a lot of people I know, he barely knew English & came straight from Brazil so he bonded with a few people here who he's still friends with (he's a wild guy). Anyway after UFC he bounced around & ended up in Russia. He did two fights with this fight nights global & got paid decent, he also won both. They call him for the 3rd fight (the one in this vid) he agrees to an even larger contract than the first 2. He shows up in Russia few days before. The night before the fight he goes to dinner with a promoter & another associate like he had the 2 previous nights, 12 hours later he wakes up confused af, vomit everywhere, not knowing how he got back to his room, completely out of it with the fight in a few hours. He got drugged at dinner & said he was still feeling the effects during the fight. After the fight he talked to the promoter & all he said was "You don't finish fight, you don't get paid". Rumor has it the guy he was fighting was a huge underdog & heavy bets were placed by a particular group for him to win. That was his last fight with that organization.

Pantangco vs. Rasner was a moment I didn't understand when I saw some "sportsmanship" compilations. Now knowing the full context, massive respect for Pantangco stopping the fight to not hurt a friend/partner any further or preventing his opponent to cause himself further injuries and much respect to Rasner for standing up and enduring as much as he could during that time. Jumping in four hours after knowing you're signed to go into the octogon/ring means no conditioning, no preparation... This is more humble than absolute novices thinking they can take on professional athletes.
