Thanks to the power of the internet (ebay and youtube) i have saved $600.00 and i have a brand new dyson. For just over $100.00 i've replaced the motor, filters and main hose and it sucks like the day it was bought.... My wife was heading straight to the shop to spend $750.00 on a new dyson, but thanks to your very professional and concise video I've saved money and have a happy wife. I might put a case together to buy myself a new Ipad..... THANK YOU.

Stellar video, gents. Many thanks. I watched a few vids for this motor replacement, and yours is thorough and professionally done. Wish I'd read some of the comments here about a few missed items, but all in all, $100 in parts, 45 minutes of time, a bit of swearing, and *poof* I didn't have to spend $500 for a new vacuum. NOW, I didn't remove the axle from the brush roller on my first attempt - MISTAKE. Turns out that the axle had several years worth of who-knows-what wound up in it, and THAT was what blew my clutch AND my motor, as the roller brush was very difficult to turn by hand. After installation of the new motor and clutch, horrible noises convinced me to take the roller apart. Once I cleaned the inside of the roller (with the axle removed) and reassembled, I could easily turn the brush roller by hand.
Fabulous tutorial. Ireally well explained. I was of a mind to buy a new Dyson but £15 and an hour of labour has saved me £175.Useful add ons are a wife to help and a glass of wine.
G'day, Excellent video and saved me at least AU $500.00 on a new machine. Once you have done it a few times it would be straight forward, but for the rest of us who might do it every 10 years or so it is a god send. I did get caught out with the hidden 7th screw to hold the motor top cover but once discovered the rest was reasonably easy. A hint that might save a few swear words when fitting the new motor back in the housing - put a small amount of talcum powder around the rubber motor cover to assist in refitting - make it more "slippery" and easier to remove if those pesky motor leads have moved. I also fitted a new clutch and belt assembly as well as a brush bar. This should see another ten years service with any luck. Thanks for posting this video. Peter of Adelaide.
samgalah there is a small cover in the motor housing (with lots of circular holes) held by a small screw, just where the wires sit. I took off this cover to get to the wires and keep them in place while manoeuvering the motor into its housing. good tip about the talcum powder though as I had the same issue with the rubber covers being very hard to move.
You'll need a 4 quid T15 torx long shank screwdriver to get the motor housing screws out, plus 22 quid for a new motor. Washing up liquid needed to get the motor back in its housing. I broke all the tabs on the upper motor filter cover putting it back on cos I was getting tired and could see the finish line 🤨 But my Dyson lives again!! Great video, thanks.

Well, with a little common sense applied (not forcing plastic fittings etc) this was a thoroughly useful video! Replaced carbon brushes, filters, clutch and roller by using this video alone! Thank you Kevin!! Small hands required for removing cabling to motor (or big hands and swear words). Machine is like brand new and will no doubt last another 10 years.

Don't even bother with the Ball ones the suction on them is very poor compared to the DC07 and DC14. Also, go look on eBay etc at the number of Ball ones that are being sold saying the Brushbar has stopped turning, its a common thing for the Brushbar Motor to go on them.

excellent video, well explained. Not sure if others would agree but, if the motor rubber is very tight (as mine was) 2 drops of washing up liquid on the inside of the motor housing spread very thinly was just enough to enable it to move slightly into position. Anyway, well done guys, great job!!!
Thanks for the step by step! This helped me to replace the motor, the switch, and finally diagnosing that the plug end of the cord was the faulty culprit (intermittent open)... still, saved hundreds, and I've got essentially a brand new DC07!!

Guys, a VERY useful tutorial. Just replaced the motor on my 07, and even though I am pretty handy, I would definitely have struggled to achieve a successful outcome without this help. I was also fortunate that my car (SAAB) toolkit had a Torx 15 screwdriver in it. The Dyson now sucks better than a $40 hooker.... ;-)

Yeah 2 hours lots of redoing stuff I already done, got motor for £15. Thought I would take a chance, working at the moment. Clutch belt didn't know what that was still works.thanx Guys
This was awesome guys, thanks. But I THiNK from memory, while I was tricked awhile with the motor house, there are actually 7 screws holding it together. Look for one hidden on the clutch cover side. And yep, you have to get a T15 Tamperproof screwdriver. It MUST be a screwdriver, not one of those multi-tip jobs, because the recess for two of the screws is very narrow and the socket-shaft of the multi-screwdrivers won't fit.
Nice video. There's an easier way than bashing the motor spindle to remove the motor. It's the big rubber fan case seal (shown at 3:51) that's holding it in the motor housing. Firmly wiggle the rubber part that's on the opposite side from the spindle to gradually work the seal out of the motor cover, and the motor will be released without bashing it.
Great Post... worked like a charm, my brush housing was a complete B****** to get off though, certainly not as easy as Kevin made it look, even second time around was difficult. Second time around? first time one of the motor wires didn't connect properly and hence the grand switch on was a complete flop but once disassembled and reconnected worked like a charm, many thanks... Check those connections and save yourself time and lots of choice words!!
Excellent video found in desperation. Fortunately everything I had already done was OK. I had trouble finding the last screw and my model may be slightly different, but I am very happy with the result and it works perfectly!
Thanks for this very useful. Putting the new motor back into the motor housing can be a tight squeeze. To make this part of the job much easier, smear some washing up liquid on the rubber boot and around the inside of the motor housing. The motor will then just slip into place! :)
Many thanks for the video, old blown motor now replaced with a Dyson / YDK YV2200 replacement. Hopefully won't need to open it up again for at least 5 years! Need a Torx T15 screwdriver with at least a 75mm blade (under £4 from B&Q).
Brilliant video ,i changed whole motor but after looking at brushes i could have save a little money by just replacing the brushes that was worn down and armature wasn't damaged but hey ho i have a fully working Dyson DC 14 .Thank you But i wish it was as easy as it looked on video lol
Excellent. Thank you very much for this. I just did this to check the brushes on the motor. I do think you should suggest pressing in the three tabs of the motor retaining housing before prising though, as mine would not prise off without doing this. Also, I would strongly recommend using a small block of wood on the end of th motor when tapping with a hammer. The metal is very soft, mine was a swine to get out and started damaging the end of the shaft
Yup. Ended up snapping one of the tabs off mine because he said to prise it when after getting it off it's clear you're meant to press the tabs in to release, not prise at all.
New motor on order this week. It might be useful to tell people 'at the beginning' they will need a T15 torx driver! I got half way through taking mine apart then had to stop... Great video thoug, thanks!

Thanks for great video..... getting the new motor into the housing whilst keeping those wires out fo the way was the most difficult task I have done in years..... I actually ended up smearing the rubber seals with olive oil to make it easier to slide in. Two house later all put back together and dead as a dodo...... right I guess I now need to send off for a new switch. I've changed the plus and checked the fuse so if that doesn't do it then I'm flummoxed.
Thanks for the video it was a great help in repairing my DC14 Animal I changed the motor start to finish in just over an hour, only tricky bit for me was the wire and connectors so that they were clear and the motor sat flush in the housing, also I needed a torx size 15 long screwdriver, i didn't buy my replacement motor off eBay as many do from £12 to £15 and bought it from my local spares shop for a little more model MTR299 Qualtex approx £15 or I notice they have the original motor for £52 but why pay more? very pleased I now have more years with my old Dyson.
Good video - but the editing, for me, at crucial times was iffy. The parts on my machine (DC 33) did not slide in and out as easy as this video made it look. Never did get the 'secret screw' back in, Nevertheless I managed to replace the motor, albeit with some marred hands. There are 8 (7 + 1) SCREWS IN TOTAL TO TAKE OFF not 7 (6 + 1) as stated in the video. the Clutch housing has 3 and the motor housing has 5. we found this out when we got to the stage of removing the motor cover only to find it doesn't just simply slide off but is held by the last little screw hidden away. also when inserting the new motor it is really hard to move it about to line up the rubber tabs. we had 3 attempts before it slid in correctly lined up. good video though and is easy to follow Kevin.
+jay kassan It's impossible to move my new motor about when inserting it. Has to be lined up EXACTLY upon entry. Onto like the 10th try now, so hard...
Got the motor lined up on the second try whew! SURE wish I'd read your comment about the 8 screws first., and yeah, that bugger was hidden nicely. Eventually figured it out though...
Deep TX15 required. Other than that, this is a great vid. Just add a £19.99 motor and filter kit and your DC14 is good for another 10 years. Go green, repair before you replace!
Number of screws needing to be removed is moe than stated in this video. There is a screw tucked away, very not immediately obvious and not mentioned or pointed out in this video...if it’s not removed, the motor casing will not slide off
excellent video , just used it to change motor on dc33 animal upright , fully expected to have to throw the whole lot in the bin but this video kept me on the right track !!!! another pointer to add is new motors arnt as deep as the original ones so you have to use an adapted seal (the big one ) part no. DYS921867-01 , thanks again !!!!!!!!!! :-)
I just did this. It is much much harder, and way more fiddley than it looks. Not helped by a cheap chinese motor form Amazon with badly designed connectors I had to bend to get the wires to fit in properly. Still though, great video. I fixed my dyson for £15 instead of buying a new one. Thanks!
great instructions but it is really fiddly, it took me all day to do apart from a break to go and buy a T15 screwdriver and lunch & tea! but it does work now, yeah!!!!, I had to take the roller out in one piece and couldn't get the motor cover off on one side but twisted it enough to get the motor out, having got the new motor stuck in the wrong place in the housing (I had to hammer it out!) I used a load of washing up liquid the second time (rather more that 2 drops) which worked to get it in. Feeling very virtuous now!
Great video, i took my dc14 motor out but then realised the burning smell was from melted end cap from brush bar. Any idea what could have caused this. I took off the end caps a few days back to clean away the dust etc inside.

Great video. Terrible vacuum. My DC33 (almost identical to the DC14 / DC07) is the most maintenance unfriendly vacuum money can buy. Even changing a belt is terribly time consuming. My issue ended up being lack of continuity between a brush and the motor armature. Light cleaning of the brush solved the problem. Both brushes and armature looked fine.
HI great video but i can't get the upper motor cover to release any help i have replayed the video loads of times and done everything up to this point correctly please help
He forgot to change the blocked pad filter. Did you see all that carbon fall out? Well that will have totally blocked the post motor filter. Always change that filter with a motor or you can burn the next motor out in about half an hour.
Down to upper motor cover and this for the life in me will not come out.......Checked this video many times and haven't missed anything so what could the problem be? Tried to prise but still will not shift

i tiny bit of silicon spray or even a tiny bit of talk help.i am mean a tiny amount .do not use WD40 or similar the trouble with washing up liquid it can rot rubber and if you use too much it could be potentially dangerous if it came into contact with any of the electrical components
when I said tiny bit I don't mean a squirt I'm talking a tiny drop to the finger and to be honest I have used this technique for yrs on bicycle tyre fitting and other rubber jobs and never had the rubber rot yet I must admit I have never tried the talk technique

Many thanks for the video, old blown motor now replaced with a Dyson / YDK YV2200 replacement. Hopefully won't need to open it up again for at least 5 years! Need a Torx T15 screwdriver with at least a 75mm blade (under £4 from B&Q).
Brilliant video ,i changed whole motor but after looking at brushes i could have save a little money by just replacing the brushes that was worn down and armature wasn't damaged but hey ho i have a fully working Dyson DC 14 .Thank you

Excellent. Thank you very much for this. I just did this to check the brushes on the motor. I do think you should suggest pressing in the three tabs of the motor retaining housing before prising though, as mine would not prise off without doing this. Also, I would strongly recommend using a small block of wood on the end of th motor when tapping with a hammer. The metal is very soft, mine was a swine to get out and started damaging the end of the shaft
Yup. Ended up snapping one of the tabs off mine because he said to prise it when after getting it off it's clear you're meant to press the tabs in to release, not prise at all.
New motor on order this week. It might be useful to tell people 'at the beginning' they will need a T15 torx driver! I got half way through taking mine apart then had to stop... Great video thoug, thanks!

Thanks for great video..... getting the new motor into the housing whilst keeping those wires out fo the way was the most difficult task I have done in years..... I actually ended up smearing the rubber seals with olive oil to make it easier to slide in. Two house later all put back together and dead as a dodo...... right I guess I now need to send off for a new switch. I've changed the plus and checked the fuse so if that doesn't do it then I'm flummoxed.
Thanks for the video it was a great help in repairing my DC14 Animal I changed the motor start to finish in just over an hour, only tricky bit for me was the wire and connectors so that they were clear and the motor sat flush in the housing, also I needed a torx size 15 long screwdriver, i didn't buy my replacement motor off eBay as many do from £12 to £15 and bought it from my local spares shop for a little more model MTR299 Qualtex approx £15 or I notice they have the original motor for £52 but why pay more? very pleased I now have more years with my old Dyson.

Good video - but the editing, for me, at crucial times was iffy. The parts on my machine (DC 33) did not slide in and out as easy as this video made it look. Never did get the 'secret screw' back in, Nevertheless I managed to replace the motor, albeit with some marred hands. Something I could have never achieved without this video....Thank You Ransom Spares!
There are 8 (7 + 1) SCREWS IN TOTAL TO TAKE OFF not 7 (6 + 1) as stated in the video. the Clutch housing has 3 and the motor housing has 5.
we found this out when we got to the stage of removing the motor cover only to find it doesn't just simply slide off but is held by the last little screw hidden away.
also when inserting the new motor it is really hard to move it about to line up the rubber tabs. we had 3 attempts before it slid in correctly lined up.

+jay kassan It's impossible to move my new motor about when inserting it. Has to be lined up EXACTLY upon entry. Onto like the 10th try now, so hard...

Got the motor lined up on the second try whew! SURE wish I'd read your comment about the 8 screws first., and yeah, that bugger was hidden nicely. Eventually figured it out though...

Other than that, this is a great vid. Just add a £19.99 motor and filter kit and your DC14 is good for another 10 years.

Mines just blown up presume it's the motor horrible electric smell but considering going green and fixing it.

Number of screws needing to be removed is moe than stated in this video. There is a screw tucked away, very not immediately obvious and not mentioned or pointed out in this video...if it’s not removed, the motor casing will not slide off

excellent video , just used it to change motor on dc33 animal upright , fully expected to have to throw the whole lot in the bin but this video kept me on the right track !!!! another pointer to add is new motors arnt as deep as the original ones so you have to use an adapted seal (the big one ) part no. DYS921867-01 , thanks again !!!!!!!!!! :-)

I just did this. It is much much harder, and way more fiddley than it looks. Not helped by a cheap chinese motor form Amazon with badly designed connectors I had to bend to get the wires to fit in properly. Still though, great video. I fixed my dyson for £15 instead of buying a new one. Thanks!
great instructions but it is really fiddly, it took me all day to do apart from a break to go and buy a T15 screwdriver and lunch & tea! but it does work now, yeah!!!!, I had to take the roller out in one piece and couldn't get the motor cover off on one side but twisted it enough to get the motor out, having got the new motor stuck in the wrong place in the housing (I had to hammer it out!) I used a load of washing up liquid the second time (rather more that 2 drops) which worked to get it in. Feeling very virtuous now!

Great video, i took my dc14 motor out but then realised the burning smell was from melted end cap from brush bar. Any idea what could have caused this. I took off the end caps a few days back to clean away the dust etc inside.

Great video. Terrible vacuum. My DC33 (almost identical to the DC14 / DC07) is the most maintenance unfriendly vacuum money can buy. Even changing a belt is terribly time consuming. My issue ended up being lack of continuity between a brush and the motor armature. Light cleaning of the brush solved the problem. Both brushes and armature looked fine.
HI great video but i can't get the upper motor cover to release any help i have replayed the video loads of times and done everything up to this point correctly please help
He forgot to change the blocked pad filter. Did you see all that carbon fall out? Well that will have totally blocked the post motor filter. Always change that filter with a motor or you can burn the next motor out in about half an hour.

I found it easier to rub a bit of washing up liquid round the motor rubber to make for an easier fit
i tiny bit of silicon spray or even a tiny bit of talk help.i am mean a tiny amount .do not use WD40 or similar the trouble with washing up liquid it can rot rubber and if you use too much it could be potentially dangerous if it came into contact with any of the electrical components
when I said tiny bit I don't mean a squirt I'm talking a tiny drop to the finger and to be honest I have used this technique for yrs on bicycle tyre fitting and other rubber jobs and never had the rubber rot yet I must admit I have never tried the talk technique
