New to baseball potential card collecting, is this version a good one to buy or hold on to another brand , set to purchase? Has there been a better another year version that should be looked at? Example For hockey this year is the year cause if the upcoming rookies to buy Upper deck.
Chris here - sounds like you’re very new. Generally the best products to get into are the three Topps releases: series 1, series 2, and update, and the 3 bowman releases: Bowman, Bowman Chrome and bowman draft. I think the design for Topps will look amazing in Chrome. I'm chasing all the Evan Carter parallels, since I PC Texas Rangers. 2024 could be a great year of rookies with Series 1 checklist and then seeing in Series 2 and Update have Jackson Churio, Jackson Holliday, Yomamoto and Wyatt Langford.
What about all 15 sapphire releases?? I’m kidding. Cards from those sets you mention are definitely some Of the best long term values. I’d throw Bowman Chrome in there too
I like that Topps is thinking outside the box with this new design. Looks sharp. The black borders on paper make me nervous though so I’m going to pass and save my $ for Chrome. Another great episode guys!
@@SpitballinCards Here's a question for you. Say we went 25 years into the future and the flagship design was right up your alley. In the set, there were inserts commemorating the 2024 set. Would you be excited? I can't say that I would be. I should also mention that I'm speaking to the design of the card, and not the rookie class. All that being said, so many products are released throughout the year that I'll be able to find something. Probably buy a hobby box or two of B&W as the photography is so good.

Great video and the four of y’all are so knowledgeable, really learn a lot from watching! I will not be buying any new product. I have been in and out of the hobby for years but recently jumped in with both feet in 2021. Yep, during the COVID hype! I bought lots a new, sealed product then not knowing it wasn’t the way to approach products nowadays. Over printed and base cards worth nothing, barely over the cost of grading even for Gem mint 10s. Now, I just buy singles of the players I like, speculate some for sure. However, really enjoy vintage and picking up low pop inserts from 90s. Anyway, I do love the new design and I’m interested in seeing other inserts. Keep up the great content!

I missed out on the presale, and that might be a good thing. I still haven’t bought any 2023 update, still waiting for Jumbos to go down, which they will. They add more parallels, on top of sets that have more parallels, with inserts that have more parallels. We are in Junk Wax 2.0. We are smarter and are only buying for the hobby and not as investments. The influencers that rip and rip and rip are ruining the print runs.
You’re right - we are smarter! We know that ripping rarely results in wins. It’s fun, but it’s painful usually. Definitely in the junk parallel/junk auto era. Be careful Out there. Thanks for watching

@@SpitballinCards personally, modern cards have a hard time competing against 90s inserts. The die cuts, acetate and ground breaking designs from that era will be hard to “topp” (pun intended). Plus the fact there were numerous card manufacturers, as opposed to one, makes it easy for that one card company to continue to put out a mediocre product. Interesting state of affairs the hobby finds itself in…. Side note, keep up the great work -dig the show!
My prediction for Dominguez is, after missing the first 2+ months, he hits 26 home runs with 72 RBI and misses out on 20/20 by a couple steals finishing with 18. Rough slash of .270/.360/.460/.820

@SpitballinCards I don't really buy wax, very rarely. I just buy singles. But I love Dynasty, that's my favorite release of the year with museum collection being my 2nd, triple threads 3rd, and Definative a distant 4th.
Series 1 is always usually the most overprinted of all releases in a single calendar year. I wouldn't touch it with a 10-foot pole. I am no longer in denial that we are in a junk wax era 2.0. We have cards everywhere now. Costco, Barnes and Noble, gas stations, sporting goods stores, etc. I've seen this before in the late eighties and early 90s. I guess it's more so a junk parallel era but you get the point. For many years I have collected sealed wax and also bought individual players for my PC. I'm no longer buying any new product this year. And I can't even buy most PC cards from the 90s because everything I collect is usually already graded and I can't afford slabbed prices. This hobby was once collector friendly. After over 35 years of collecting, I'm going to have to bow out. I enjoy your content nonetheless. You guys do a great job.

Chris here - There are definitely too many parallels these days. By a lot! And unfortunately, prices for boxes are outrageous. I hear you. I haven’t bought any 2023 cards yet. I may not. But if I do, it’ll be a topps black or a topps chrome gold. This parallels always have been and will be special - and the increased print runs just make then harder to find! I would recommend you look back, and start hunting down some rare older cards of players you like. 2010-2014 is a great era for card design with big names in most sets. Definitely worth a look. And singles/parallels aren’t too expensive! Don’t give up In the hobby yet!!

Chris here - the term flagship in baseball refers to Topps series 1, 2, and update. I’ve heard some hobbyists consider Topps Chrome to be flagship as well, but I’ve never heard that term used for anything else. At least in baseball.
RC checklist seems weak??? Evan Carter, Jasson Dominguez, Elly De La Cruz, Ceddanne Rafaela, Sal Frelick, Curtis Mead, Nolan Schanuel, Zack Gelof, Christian Encarnacion Strand, Marco Luciano, Ronny Mauricio, Henry Davis, I could keep going.

I like the design too - especially interested to see paper black and chrome gold parallels. Just be careful about grading base cards. This will be a mass produced set with 500,000k+ of each base cards. Even black borders won’t keep the PSA 10 pop too low.

Black borders are so hard to grade if that's what you are into and even if not quality control usually isn't good with it as well!

Great stuff guys. I would love to know the logic behind Prizm being the flagship for any sport? What is you your definition of flagship and what is your why for that concept? Not being confrontational just want to learn, logically, why Prism is considered flagship. Thanks, keep up the great work.
Chris here - the term flagship in baseball refers to Topps series 1, 2, and update.
I’ve heard some hobbyists consider Topps Chrome to be flagship as well, but I’ve never heard that term used for anything else.
At least in baseball.
Could technically be Donruss for football and basketball, but a lot of people would say Prizm

@@fliplife67 no 2021 was always a weak rookie class. This year has legit 5 tool players and a 21 year old who was one of the best players on a team that won the world series. Idk who you would want instead

Well preorder was 90 so it will be more than that. Rookie class is pretty good
This is Topp's best design ever. I am excited for the black borders because I think it will give more value to graded base cards.
I like the design too - especially interested to see paper black and chrome gold parallels.
Just be careful about grading base cards. This will be a mass produced set with 500,000k+ of each base cards. Even black borders won’t keep the PSA 10 pop too low.
