Time Travel And Jank - TimeSplitters Retrospective

- Out of the trilogy of TimeSplitters titles, released on PlayStation 2, Xbox and Gamecube, perhaps unsurprisingly it’s the series maiden outing which has aged the worst.
Back in the year 2000 when I picked it up with my PlayStation 2 on launch day, I was very impressed by developer Free Radical's work and TimeSplitters arcade stylings, zany characters and varied settings.
Playing it in the present, I spent much of my time teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown, as I desperately tried to navigate a campaign that was - alarmingly often - deeply, deeply unfair.
Here are my thoughts regarding TimeSplitters, some 23 years after it first hit store shelves.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect will always be one of the best FPS games ever made. I have some fun memories from playing that with my friend and even have a few memories from the multi-player.
My favorite memory is not being able to see the enemy shooting me, flipping on the alt-fire mode on the gatling gun, spinning around while firing, and seeing a head roll down a small hill in front of me after a comical pause.
I'm finishing off a video on 2 right now, then I'll be moving straight on to Future Perfect after so keep you eyes peeled for that!
I love time splitters, the story and the gameplay was a head of its time, I always loved the difficult challenge, which is why I got into gaming in the first place, and the story was the cherry on top!🙂
The second game is such a step up from the original too, one of the best sequels ever.
Cheers mate! Timespitters 2 and Future Perfect were some of my favorite games to play with my best friend growing up. I’d love to see a full breakdown on all the levels like you did for Halo. Thanks for all the great content man!
No worries! Mine too, really enjoyed revisiting them all again. I probably won't full breakdowns as I've less to say about their design, but the script I'm working on for 2 (video out tomorrow) does spend some time running through the game level by level.
I never expected you to cover this wonderful and forgotten franchise! Grew up with timesplitters and I still have hope to see a revival
Here's hoping the current project works out 👌
@@CoffeeCrowgasm likewise
One day, hopefully! Will be a follow up covering 2 coming Wednesday as well.
@@CoffeeCrowgasm The remake was killed sadly and Timesplitters Rewind isn't happening also sadly.
@@Jalbesbe aww man what the hell 😭
Ooh my god the arm coming out from the side of the screen and one tapping you made me roll 🤣💀
Every time I got to a new part on Mansion, something would spawn somewhere ridiculous and kill me before I could react. Drove me nuts.
Maybe this is what inspired the difficulty of Halo 2 legendary. Specifically: the sniper jackals.
It’s amazing how similar vibe this game seems to have from Rare’s N64 shooters (at least judging from the footage). My guess is that it’s also a reflection of the era the games were made.
I really enjoy these reviews of older games you make sometimes now. This and the previous one are games I remember vaguely hearing about but never actually played, so they’re quite fascinating to hear about. So thanks for making these as always!
EDIT: Speaking of those games, The Thing is apparently getting remastered by Nightdive Studios (tho, maybe you did mention that in your video?).
Pleasure's all mine, torb!
They're definitely a product of their time, especially the original which feels very rushed. The sequels take more of their cues from Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, and they're all the better for it too. The first is as basic as can be and probably wouldn't have been received half as well if it released 12 months later around the time Combat Evolved came out and upped the bar.
Have seen the news about The Thing too, annoyed I covered it just before it was announced! Fingers crossed it's got gameplay changes to accompany the graphical overhaul, as there are some simple quality of life changes they could make to improve the experience massively.
Oh thank God you showed that Mansion crap from the first game. That PERFECTLY describes the experience.
IIRC, a lot of it was also tied to speed running. Sometimes enemies would show up based on how long you took in the level. It still created the same anxiety though. The third game is the most fair, and fun.
Mansion is horrible. A truly terrible experience from start to finish. I didn't know about the speedrunning aspect of it either, that's interesting!
Time splitters is the game that got me into making video games, I got skills that most people would even dream of, every game that I make on Minecraft’s engine is all passion projects!🙂
Great retrospective, Ben.
It does certainly seem like the first one was indeed akin to a tech demo. At least when it comes to the campaign.
I didn't actually know of the series until about a decade ago, so I got into TS very late. 2 and 3 are such a blast though and I still play 3 a couple of times a year on my Xbox Series X. 😂
Looking forward to the next two videos. 😊
Nice one burge!
The original's campaign took an hour even with about a quarter of that spent on the mansion. It was great when it first came out but has aged terribly.
2 and Future Perfect are still brilliant, though. Actually forgot just how good they are honestly, had a blast playing them through after all these years.
This was the first game I played on the PS2. I do remember it having some frustrating moments that seemed unfair. I still loved the design of the characters. And even though I'm not a fan of tattoos, I am considering getting one with a few of the characters posing.
I got Tekken Tag Tournament, SSX and TimeSplitters at the PlayStation 2's launch. Such a solid lineup, my parents barely saw me for weeks haha.
Also, let me know about the tattoo if you ever do it, would love to see it.
Ahh Timesplitters 2 on GameCube was a huge part of my childhood, going from Goldeneye and Perfect Dark on 64 to this was just an amazing upgrade. The controls, graphics, options, level builder... so much fun 😁
I played the first two especially to death, although Halo began to slowly become my more regular console FPS. Some of my fondest gaming memories come from playing Timesplitters 2 with mates, nothing like a game of virus on training ground.
🎵I've had... the time of my life 🎵
Actually, I never got to play this game series - no PS2 growing up. Good to get acquainted with a neat bit of gaming-past.
A great series I'd love to see return proper at some stage. Although, I can't imagine it would be mega successful now unfortunately, the brand recognition isn't there anymore.
Ben you've always been quite humorous, but you've been outdoing yourself lately, the jokes have been landing stupendously!
Thanks gabe, I try!
0:31 At least those weren't poisonous butterflies. (Etrian odysee reference)
I remember this series being amazing and went back for another try about a year ago. I was kind of shocked. I didnt find it enjoyable and it felt alot like trial and error learning to get good at it. Its easy to forget how much of a big change Halo was to the scene at the time
Trial and error is exactly right, the first game in particular is incredibly harsh. Timespitters 2 is a much better , and fairer, experience at least. Even then, the gameplay itself doesn't really match up to Combat Evolved, which was miles ahead of everything on console.
Keep changing the title like 3 times now and it has a typo. Anyways, I never got to play the first one but 2 and 3 were such great memories
The moral of the story is never tinker with things immediately before going to sleep! I'm actually finishing up a similar video on 2 right now as well, should be out tomorrow evening.
nothing comes to my mind to write here. so yeah, another for the algorithm
Always appreciate it edux!
Pfffft git gud..
Nah you're right with the unfair parts. Still liked it
I enjoyed my playthrough, mostly, but there were a couple of occasions I almost lost it haha.
OH MY GOD YES MY CHILDHOOD 😂😂😂🤘
my brother taught me how to play FPS games with this, me against all bots with 5 star difficulty and one shot kill turned on 😅😂 it was PAIN.
Also FUCK planet X that level suuuuuucked lmao
The first game FPS I played with dual analogue controls. Took me many, many games to get used to them, but gave me a headstart for when Halo came out and everyone else started using them too.
@@BenPlaysGames for real though lol although I didn't play halo till my sister got an Xbox in 2004 for her b'day so timesplitters was all I had for years
HOOOLY SHIIIIIT
I'd no plans to do cover these games until mid-last week when the idea popped into my head. Been absorbed in all things Timesplitters since.
@@BenPlaysGames :DDDDD
when reviewing these older games, play them on the actual hardware not the emulation!
Nah mansion is the best level in the game. It’s a skill issue bro. Level is great, atmosphere is great, I was beating it on hard when I was just a wee lad. Timesplitters is an arcade game , memorise the levels as you play them, that’s how you beat them
There are a lot of cheap deaths. Personally, I think if a level has to be repeated multiple times and enemy locations memorised so you don't get screwed, that's poor game design. I completed the level and at no point did my skill level really change, I simply performed better because I knew what was coming and was able to prepare accordingly.
