STRIPPING PAINT - vintage vanity/desk makeover ... DRIFTWOOD / BEACH INSPIRED FURNITURE FLIP

  • I had NO idea what would be underneath this thick purple paint! I had to use SEVERAL methods to remove this paint, it was a mess! Chemical stripper, sanding, scraping... you name it, I tried it!
Once I FINALLY managed to strip all the paint and saw the wood underneath, I was inspired to give it a driftwood / beachy sort of treatment. It also allowed me to experiment a bit with Mr. Cornwall's Creative Colors natural pigments, which I blended into some Odie's Super Duper Everlasting Oil (and a touch of the Odie's Safer Solvent).
I used the colours Titanium and Up in Smoke, no specific recipe or amount; I was literally just experimenting with them. For the painted parts, I used Fusion Mineral Paint... a custom blend I created a while back... a light grey with a hint of green. I also added new hardware, and then used Fusion Mineral Paint's Liming Wax to lightly grey the wood AND the paint.
The resulting combination of all this is a beautiful beachy vibe, where the wood almost appears sun bleached, in a way. I LOVE how this turned out, but it's one of those projects that took much longer than expected.

Now this is what I call an upgrade. It doesn’t fall into the purist trap of restorers who end up killing all the built up character of the piece, and also avoids being excessively on trend. It gains a respectable dignity that is modern and timeless. I can see it living on for decades blending into future trends without a problem, because it’s a piece of design. You let the piece speak to you and used the driftwood cues as inspiration. It paid off, and I’m sure the video response helped pay off the countless hours spent on it.

Everything I do with every single piece is subjective, understandably, but I really try to keep the majority of them neutral - not necessarily literally, as in colour, but moreso in overall design. I want my pieces to work in various decor situations and outlast short term fads and trends, to prolong the life of a piece. At least that’s the goal. :-)

Even the hardware gives me strong coastal/nautical vibes- but elegant early mid-century ocean liner chic not beach bum bar kitsch. I hope this piece sold for a lot more than you were expecting. It is such a good look. I'd love to see a sequel where you recreate this finish on another piece someday, hopefully with less stripping and scraping required for your sake. That purple reminds me of my first experience using paint stripper. When I was a kid, my family fixed up our home for sale, including the kitchen cabinets. The plan was to strip the dozen or so layers of paint and then repaint them. We removed several layers of various off-whites, then a layer of avocado green, then a layer of purple very similar to that purple, then a few more layers of off-whites. The wood underneath was beautiful, so we stained it and finished it rather than painting it.
But the idea of a kitchen painted with either that green or that purple still makes me shake my head.

I remember in the 90s in San Francisco, these 1930/40s vanities and dressers were everywhere. I found mine on the curb. All I ever did to that bureau was put black paint on the trim, and left the wood plain; the trim had been painted a pea green color. As soon as I saw the thumbnail of your video, though, I thought to myself, I could easily have been friends with the person who painted the desk purple! It looked 1000% familiar to me from the days when broke young people could live in SF with 7 roommates and 3 cats. So, ty for the nostalgia.
Mostly, though, I also am here to say how much I respect your design choices and work ethic. I really am blown away by your channel! I didn’t expect to like this one - I lived through some design eras that left me feeling callous - but I love it. Great work!

I’ve watched this twice, and love what you did. Your image of driftwood was perfect, as the wood colors have the varying tones of beige and gray. The paint color is most definitely a beach color. Overall, the piece has the tranquil mood of a foggy beach morning. So glad you didn’t give up on this.

Great work! ❤ The finished piece looks modern, beautiful, and elegant. Your video reminds me of a restoration Dad did (about 30 years ago) to a piece of furniture my Grandmother bought. The piece had three layers of paint: pink, green, and white. Dad removed the paint, sanded the piece and finished the original wood with a dark varnish. He also added new hardware. Thank you for sharing!

I find sandblasting a bit aggressive for furniture. Soda blasting works well and is a bit less intense, though that can also cause damage if used incorrectly on certain pieces. I’m not entirely against soda blasting… but it has to be done carefully on the RIGHT piece. Thanks for watching!
