It's both. The show is gorgeous and lovely and wholesome, but with a constant undertone of nostalgia. It's about remembering great moments that you often didn't appreciate at the time, grieving missed chances, and learning from those past events so you don't miss the present.
There was recently a story like a month or two ago, where a Taiwanese man helped stop a knife attack on the Taichung metro because his anime hero, Himmel "would've done the same."
When you said that you didn’t even know the character Himmel that much but your heart is exploding that’s exactly what’s happening for Frieren. Those 10 years were a blip in her life and yet they (he) are the reason why she now starts to feel things again and wants to learn more about the people around her.
The show is so skilled at allowing us to feel Frieren's feelings, we don't need much knowledge of Himmel so long as we can clearly feel for Frieren. I love that about this show so much.
I'n my 42 years on this planet I've been blessed to witness such great beauty: I've performed a concert inside the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. I've awoken to a misty sunrise over the Swiss Alps. I've hiked an uncharted trail through the Maui rainforest to watch the sun set over a secret waterfall cove. The things "Frieren" mKes me feel surpass all of these... and it's not even close!!
And that why the spell she learned for him was to make tea. Sour Grapes for Eisen, Clean Statues for Himmel, and Warm Tea for everyone’s favorite recovering alcoholic, Heiter.
As an adult male, I can tell you there will be even more opportunities to 'cut some onions', along with one of the coldest lines ever delivered in a show. This is a great, great story-driven show. Don't worry about your emotions, you're in the right spot with them.
True! Honestly, when I first started watching Frieren I was absolutely amazed that a show that is this slow paced, reflective, meandering with its story and for the whole beginning almost devoid of any action scenes (it literally skips fight scenes that would be the main course in your usual anime) has managed to get this much attention from the mainstream audience... and I'm very happy about it. Also, what I love is that Frieren does make you cry, but never out of sadness - it's always out of empathy or from acts and thoughts that feel heartwarming and moving. It never makes you feel down or depressed (even just for emotional impact in the moment), it just softly touches the gentler, kinder and more caring side of us, and that's what makes it beautiful and gives the viewer this positively melancholic and cathartic feeling that doesn't require any buildup at all (like having to know the characters for multiple seasons to care about them)
@@TheTorment And then when we do get fight scenes, they're some of the BEST animated fight scenes I've ever seen, full stop. It truly is a show that just keeps on giving to the viewer and I'm now on my 10th rewatch of it at least with this reaction series lmao
Himmel: *Does something kind* Frieren: ... Frieren, 76 years later: *smacks forehead* Keep some tissues nearby, there's a few more onion ninjas up ahead.
19:09 Many of the character names are German words btw: -"Frieren" means "(somebody is) freezing" -"Fern" means "far away" -"Himmel" means "sky/heaven" -"Heiter" means "joyful" -"Eisen" means "iron" So basically their names reflect their personality.
The best thing about Himmel is that, while he's obviously strong and capable, what the show really highlights is his kindness and gentleness. A true, complete hero.
A fun thing I noticed with the first time they show the weather vane after Heiter collapses it's being blown either east or west (I can't quite remember exactly) but when Heiter actually dies they show the weather vane again it's being blown to the north. Towards Aureole, the land where souls rest.
Something i love about this show is how the people sees Himmel as this Heroic old figure, even as a myth, but Frieren sees him as an idiotic obsessed with his beauty guy, but with a pure heart at the same time, she's the anchor to earth of people remembering Himmel, and i love that so much ❤
8:00 “It’s the onions!” Little Fern was cutting enough onions for all of us. 😭 Regarding where she came from, Heiter told Frieren in the first episode that she was a war orphan from the South.
@@FlexiejayAnime.‼️Everyone locates the series faster with their original names‼️ I don't know why they have the bad habit of translating everything, seriously what is the need to do that.
Fern's voice is Kana Ichinose, who has also played Yuzuriha Ogawa from _Dr. Stone_ , Myra from _Granblue Fantasy_ , and my personal favorite of her roles, Suletta Mercury from _Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury._ Frieren's VA, Atsumi Tanezaki,, has an equally impressive career and numerous roles. One of which you happen to have been enjoying at the same time as this series: Anya Forger from _SPY X FAMILY._
There's a reason why this is the all-time no. 1 in My Anime List now, dethroning FMA: Brotherhood - it's such a heart-warming, insightful, and beautiful story overall.
Hey, my 21 year old son was tearing up a little too... and he wasn't alone. We both love this show, it's amazing. And please keep watching... so many questions will be answered later. :)
The thing that always makes me tear up is 15:10. First, the way she stands over the flowers and speaks softly, as if she's whispering directly to Himmel right beside her, followed by the way she so slowly, lightly, & lovingly caresses the flower, as if to show her own love, respect, and appreciation to Himmel's personal treasure that he's secretly sharing with her. I just die inside. Also, most English speakers will pronounce "Himmel" as "him-ull" (like "full"), even though a Japanese speaker would do it more like "hee-meh-ru".
The flashbacks are what makes this show, and to see not just the depth of everyone’s connections, but for Frieren to realize how much these connections and relationships truly mean to her is so so amazing. And yes, be ready to cry almost every episode 😆.
The way the show weaves the flashbacks in seemlessly and ALWAYS gives the perfect amount of context for what's about to come next is a god dang masterclass.
@@ANunes06 Absolutely masterclass. We are actually being told two stories in parallel. There is the foreground Frieren and Fern story, and then in backstory, The previous Himmel quest to destroy the demon king some 80 years ago. In some ways, it reminds me of Haruki Murakami's "Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World".
I'm very fond of Frieren reaction videos and I'm solidly enjoying your start to this journey. One notable catch is reacting to the subtle Fern moment at 7:56. That silent moment of Fern in the kitchen quietly reacting to what she's overhearing from Heiter and Frieren's conversation gets me every time. It is such a tiny little scene with the character not even facing our way, but I find it such a beautiful insightful glimpse into Fern's inner world. It seems to slip by in most of the reactions videos I've watched, so compliments to you there. Looking forward to watching along with you through the whole series.
100%. Nobody ever sees that and I don't even really blame them. Anime very rarely includes that level of subtlety, but this show is wonderful for nuance. There's a surprising amount of subtext in the writing itself as well. The audience isn't handed every morsel of information on a silver platter.

Your heart bursts because Frieren's does. We're seeing her self-exploration from, well, her perspective. She's going on this journey and being honest with herself and re-contextualizing so much of her life into her new perspective, a new framework. There's a bit of Himmel, Frieren, Heiter and Eisen in all of us, that's why it is so easy to recognize, so easy to feel ^.^
This entire episode is a tearjerker, it's super deep and super thought provoking, and the characterization has been top tier. I loved your questions in the beginning and your current thoughts and emotional processing. It is truly incredible. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and reactions.
Don't forget to hug the people around you and tell them you love them. We don't have to be around for as long as Frieren to feel the regret of not spending more time with people while they are here. I watched this show a little after JJK season 2 started and it was so damn nice to have a weekly cathartic release alongside the relentless trauma edging that we were going through with Yuji.
This anime will continue to introduce new characters and made you really like them even if they only have less than 5 mins of screen time. The message that this anime carries is literally life changing. Many anime reviewers have already spoken about their experiences after watching Frieren

Watching Frieren slowly discovering how she truly felt about Himmel is so bitter sweet. They pace it in such a way that like we learn more about him as Frieren remembers him...remember in the first episode she said she didn't know anything about him...but this episode proved her wrong. Dont hold back the tears! This is a beautiful show and you should let yourself enjoy is to the fullest. With that you can truly feel how wonderful the character development and interactions are. There is very little that isnt purposefully done in this show. Almost everything has a deeper meaning to it so try to find them!
Enjoy watching at the top of the list of anime with a rating of 9.3, wait for the next episode, you will be more excited and cry even more, especially episode 14
This episode had several excellent examples of symbolism with Himmel as Sky. When Heiter fell, we saw the massive rain storm. Himmel was crying. When Heiter tells Fern about his lost friend in the flashback, the backdrop is a clear blue sky. When Frieren finds the Blue Moon Weed, she is framed against a beautiful sky, showing Himmel is with her and happy.
This is what great story writing does - it makes you care for smn you knew for 5 min. screen time. Joining you on this beautiful adventure called Frieren
It blew my mind the first time I watched this show how quickly you fall in love with the characters! Get your tissues ready this show is going to keep tugging your heart strings!
One interesting bit of trivia is that the voice actor for Himmel also does Bakugo for _My Hero Academia._ I was shocked when I figured that out, given the roles he normally has.
I’m glad that you’re enjoying it! It only gets better. The whole point of the show is that the present can recontextualize the past. I think this kind of story is made for people like you that are more sensitive because it really does emphasize connections and the role they play in life.
The best words to describe Frieren is "Peak Fantasy". I had watched a ton of animes, but fantasy wise Frieren is probally uncontested the best by far. Also, you said in previous video that those 50 years she was training but she was just collecting spells because it just her hobby to learn spells, especially those little and silly ones. Because this very same goofy spells always made her friends happy.
This show is so emotional. There's a tenderness throughout every aspect of it, the way she caresses the flower at 15:14. And as you said, the voices are so gentle, like dang I cried a number of times.
That's why I love watching Frieren reaction with females reactors , because this animes gear toward human feeling about life's, death , romances and friendships and human bond . Frieren animes is just wholesome story telling on fantasy world.
I know right? No matter how many times I see Frieren, there are scenes that make me tear up. If I had to do a video reaction, the social stigma of not crying because man, would cause such a boring reaction.
The love of himmel for frieren is enough for anyone to cry .... Time , age nothing matters if their is love it always find a way to convey to each other !!!
About you asking where Fern came from, it was said in the first episode; she is a war orphan. On why she didn't travel with Fern at the beginning, that was also explained in the first episode. When Frieren first aired, they premiered first 4 episodes in one go for the "prologue" of the series, to get people understand what is the anime's world building, goals and such. One thing you need to remember about this series, you need to pay attention on smaller things or you may miss or confused about soon.
I watched this show when it was released. My provider dropped episodes 1 through 4 at once . Made it way to easy to get hooked . You are in for a great ride through the episodes ,and every episode just keeps getting better ( That is the only spoiler you are getting !! * insert big grin here * ) For me everyone got their parts right, the voice actors ,production staff artists doing the world building through images. Simply put it was amazing Better hang on , you are really going to enjoy this
Such a sweet ending! Himmel wanted to show Frieren his favorite flower. And years latter, she wanted to fulfill that wish. And we end the episode with her looking at a statue of him, surrounded by blue flowers that match is eyes. He finally got to show her his flower.
The buildup of the world and the characters is just so great, that you can't help to feel these feelings. Looking forward to see more of your journey with this amazing anime (also Spy X Family) Enjoying your reactions very much so you earned a new subscriber :)
This is show is THE best anime I have watched, and there are a lot of contenders. It just has so much heart, honestly, action, and impeccable plot pacing.
I'd rated him at about 90 at best... within this setting, a start of an adventuring "career" could very much be at 15 or 16... which would make him about 25, 26 at the start of the anime, and about 75, 76 when Frieren came back to visit him. Still a good age, eh?
One of the common themes throughout the show is perspective, how the perception of people (or things) can differ between people... and how sometimes differing views can both be true to form a complete picture. Like Himmel, to the people he was a noble, selfless, caring and gallant hero, but to Frieren he was this massive dork and was almost as annoying as he was charming, with both being true to form a real person instead of a mere character. I love the depth to every aspect of the series. Really looking forward to more of your reactions.
I'm sure someone probably mentioned this already, but Frieren is german and means freezing, probably signifying her usual cold and distant personality and lack of personal warmth. Himmel meaning Heaven or sky depending on interpretation. Frieren's white theme resembling snow and Himmel's blue the sky is also quite fitting. Heiter means cheerful and Eisen is iron. German gets used quite a lot in anime, but i really like how in frieren i can actually understand why they choose these specific german words. Usually it's just gibberish to sound fancy.
You aren't the only one. I cry every episode as well. And often times I don't know why. As far as her motivations into the decisions she makes to collect spells... She's still learning her own motivations in relation to the people around her because she doesn't understand people.... But she's hinted already at the fact that she collects spells because Himmel liked her spells, it could be literally that simple. I just don't think she realizes that's the reason. But I also think she's obsessive about collecting spells because in it's own way, as long as she does, Himmel is still around even if only in memory. Which I wonder now if part of the tragedy of immortality is eventually the memories of the people you knew and loved dies as well, and in that sense those people die twice for her.
What makes the show more meaningful is that Frieren in Norwegian means To Propose and Himmel means Heaven. So basically in a poetic way Frieren is always proposing to heaven by seeking him and the impact he made to her life.
Frieren is just one of those shows that truly captures the magic of storytelling. The manga is one thing, but the anime does such a wonderful job of bringing the pages to life. It has that Disney Magic to it, something that will become a timeless classic. Such a beautiful story and it only continues to get better with each episode.

Dont hold back the tears! This is a beautiful show and you should let yourself enjoy is to the fullest. With that you can truly feel how wonderful the character development and interactions are. There is very little that isnt purposefully done in this show. Almost everything has a deeper meaning to it so try to find them!
this show is so good cant wait for ur next reaction !
Don't hold back. We are here for it. I watch reactions so I can got that same feeling I got the first time I watched through the reactor.
One interesting bit of trivia is that the voice actor for Himmel also does Bakugo for _My Hero Academia._ I was shocked when I figured that out, given the roles he normally has.
I'm loving how we tear up at the same time.
I’m glad that you’re enjoying it! It only gets better. The whole point of the show is that the present can recontextualize the past. I think this kind of story is made for people like you that are more sensitive because it really does emphasize connections and the role they play in life.
Fun Fact, Himmel's voice actor is the same as Bakugo in MHA.
I love the way the ending theme is almost a troll gives you something emotional then the the music goes "Are you alright?"
if you ever fit another show into your rotation I recommend oshi no ko. Heartbreakingly beautiful
Great anime, you will love this beautiful journey.
Another beautiful episode!
Heiter truly was a great character, and now the show is 2 for 2 for making you tear up! :D
I am a strong grown ass man, who is still in recovery, after this perfect story.
To borrow a line Gigguk said about a different series, "This show doesn't have a 'Chekov's Gun.' It has a 'Chekov's _Arsenal._ '" 😁
The fact that Himmel and Bakugo share thesame voice actor (lmao my keyboard)🤡
I watched this show when it was released. My provider dropped episodes 1 through 4 at once . Made it way to easy to get hooked .
You are in for a great ride through the episodes ,and every episode just keeps getting better ( That is the only spoiler you are getting !! * insert big grin here * )
For me everyone got their parts right, the voice actors ,production staff artists doing the world building through images. Simply put it was amazing
Better hang on , you are really going to enjoy this
Such a sweet ending! Himmel wanted to show Frieren his favorite flower. And years latter, she wanted to fulfill that wish. And we end the episode with her looking at a statue of him, surrounded by blue flowers that match is eyes. He finally got to show her his flower.
8:42 Fern and Heiter did create a few more memories and spend more time together before his end, which is clearly shown in a short montage there.
im definitely not one to cry like at all, but every episode i found myself balling my eyes lmao
Amazing as always Flexie sweetie!! I got dust in my eyes again...! Best wishes and much love always!! 🙂❤
After rewatching in your reaction, I notice how gentle Frieren touch the flowers. The feels!!! Cant wait to your next reaction!
The buildup of the world and the characters is just so great, that you can't help to feel these feelings. Looking forward to see more of your journey with this amazing anime (also Spy X Family) Enjoying your reactions very much so you earned a new subscriber :)
The hero Himmel would have loved this video.
This is show is THE best anime I have watched, and there are a lot of contenders. It just has so much heart, honestly, action, and impeccable plot pacing.
It's crazy that if you do the math Heiter was over 100 years old, that's a man that had stuff to do before dying
To be fair he is a cleric, his entire thing is healing magic. Gotta be helpful when you’re trying to keep on kicking.
Putting that Goddesses healing magic to work.
can probably live a long time when you can just cure any ailments that would take the years off, yeah
I'd rated him at about 90 at best... within this setting, a start of an adventuring "career" could very much be at 15 or 16... which would make him about 25, 26 at the start of the anime, and about 75, 76 when Frieren came back to visit him. Still a good age, eh?
my stupid ass read it as hitler💀
I love this intro, fitting for such a beautiful anime
Thank you 🥹
@@FlexiejayAnime‼️‼️SOUSOU NO FRIEREN‼️‼️ NO beyond Journeys end 🤮
I cried EVERYTIME Himmel came on the screen!!! 😢❤
been waiting for your frieren reaction
I shed a few tears too while watching the episode with you.
“and you alright”…NO I’M NOT!!
Es imposible no ponerse sentimental al mirar a himell el good😢 gracias por la reacción
Best description of Frerien as a show to me is bittersweet.
Frieren is just one of those shows that truly captures the magic of storytelling. The manga is one thing, but the anime does such a wonderful job of bringing the pages to life. It has that Disney Magic to it, something that will become a timeless classic. Such a beautiful story and it only continues to get better with each episode.
Oh, you're gonna love Himmel and literally everyone so much and cry again and again and again lmao. Also love your reactions🥺💕
Bring more tissues. It’s so beautiful and tragic at the same time.
Yeah! Lez gooo been waiting for this reaction ❤
Beautiful episode, a BEAUTIFUL anime!
Also! I'd hiiiiiiiiiiiiighly recommend "Suzume" as a movie. Absolutely beautiful.
