This is a particularly heavy emotional episode! The line that gets me all choked up is when Frieren reflects back on Himmel in the flower field by calling him "an idiot who complimented" her spells. It's a subtle line that comes up again in a future episode. The way I'd always interpreted it is "there came a big, loveable goofball who fell for me"
My favorite scene in the whole show is so subtle and only about 4 seconds long....when Frieren tells Fern she understands because even if anything would have done, she chose magic.....and it flashes to her showing Heiter her butterfly spell, that scene hits me every time. Frieren knows and understands a lot more than she knows or gives herself credit for.
@@logikx1325 It's one of my favorite things about this series. They don't club you over the head by explaining everything with words, because just a flash of an image will convey that message. It's so much more impactful, because rather than hearing that Fern chose magic because of Heiter, we FEEL that reminiscence and care.
I took Frieren’s “we’re the same” as a tie in to the title. Frieren just happened to find something that impressed a particular someone(our boy Himmel) and decided to collect more spells to continue impressing. Much like Fern likely received praise and encouragement from Heiter and chose to pursue magic for that reason. “It didn’t have to be magic” it just happened to be for them both
Not just that, their masters both taught them mostly battle magic and they sort of fell out of love with the wonder of magic, the folk magic that Frieren collects is the part of magic she loves, just like Fern and the butterfly spell she loves.
10:45 These scenes are in the manga as well. In manga, all of these panels are without dialog but in the anime they are with beautiful music background, one of my favourite things in the manga/anime.
I knew his name from him doing such a good job on KyoAni's Violet Evergarden. As soon as I knew he was doing this as well, I was confident that I'd enjoy it, and even then this show exceeded my expectations.
FYI, Episodes 1-4 were released all at once on Crunchyroll when it premiered. it sets up up the rest of the series story. Enjoy the ride. I'm jealous you guys get to watch it for the 1st time
I'm already loving your reactions to Frieren so much. My anime interest is very much a combination of the two of you. But storms! The moment John dropped that Cosmere reference I about jumped out of my chair and did that Leo DiCaprio pointing meme. lol I have a feeling I'll be sticking around with this channel for the long haul. Y'all's reactions are a delight! Journey before destination Radiant! 🫡
10 days late to the party, but I'm loving y'alls reactions so far! And, knowing you're a Cosmere fan as well? I know Im in good company at this channel!
the youtube channel storieswithstyle also watched frieren. hes german and he notes that all the names of people and places are kind of variations on german words.(fern=distant, heiter=cheerful) to the point where he believes that the story is from the point of view of frieren, like every name describes every character in frieren's eyes.
I love it when reactors truly resonate with Frieren cause it's not everyone's cup of tea. Some don't like it due to it's pacing or maybe because it's not that type of always kind of action anime but most appreciate it and I love that you guys are the latter. Just keep watching truly and talk to yourselves and be chill. Really like that there's no overreaction nor talking over what you guys are watching. Always pay attention and be consistent on your uploads. Regardless, it's very impprtant that you enjoy it cause the audience, like me, would feel it too. Thank you. Keep it up guys.
gosh even in the intro you guys are so adorable and wholesome ❤again, said it on the last reaction, will said it again, the rollercoaster of emotions is taking off 😆
It's subtle, but I think it's worth noting that Frieren didn't actually cry when Heiter passed away. The thing that made her cry was Heiter trying to get Frieren and Fern to leave before they had the chance to make more memories with him. It was specifically the denial of making more memories that really made her cry. And if you think back to Episode 1, that was also the reason she cried at Himmel's burial.
For the emotion of this show vs. the emotion of a more action-type shonen anime, I think "quiet" is a good word for it. I think other good words might be "vulnerable" and "beautiful," especially in the first cour. There are some moments that will give you that intense "F**K YEAH" feeling too, but most of what shot this series to the top of my list of favorite anime of all time are the quiet moments of heartache, whether devastatingly sad or devastatingly sweet. Anyway, enjoyed watching with you again, thanks for sharing. :)
You have earned my sub! You two are SO adorable together! Thanks for allowing me to watch someone experience this masterpiece for the first time just to relive my own furst experience!
8:50 Money presumably was the payment, since it wasn't specified to be a spell or grimoire. Frieren prefers to be paid in those, but she does need some money when traveling.
This episode had a lot of good imagery for Himmel, with how his name means Sky or Heaven in German. Three big examples: When Heiter is talking about his lost friend, most of the screen is sky, symbolically referencing Himmel. When Heiter fell, there was a massive downpour. Himmel (the sky) was crying. When Freiren found the flowers, she was framed against a beautiful sky... Himmel was with her, and he was very happy.
Love your reaction and how you already notice the small subtle hints. In this show every small detail matters and will come back in later episodes to function as clues. As show suggestion, i would recommend The Apothecary Diaries. Its tone, writing, music and characters are similarly brilliant like Frieren, but the setting is vastly different.
So I have a feeling that characters in this show reflect different forms of neurodivergence. Reading it that way; we tend to expect our social relationships to have a large presence in our minds, so it causes panic when we try to recall things about our friends and think there’s nothing we really remember about them. Frieren’s shock was that she actually remembered a lot about Himmel in moments she needs to, even though she drew a blank at his grave.
I just found your channel and I'm really enjoying the thought you put into the scenes that are described, not just say whatever comes to mind in the middle of a scene. You guys earned a sub and enjoy the journey, it's a good one.
It's a common trope in many fantasy franchises that elves struggle with forming emotional bonds, romance, and sexuality, since they perceive time very differently due to their long lifespans. The show goes very hard on this, which is why she only learns about her own emotions in the decades after her journey and experiences with her friends. Her wanting to learn more about humans basically means learning more about herself, by understanding the importance of all those fleeting short and "insignificant" moments (and spells). Honestly, the show hits even harder on a rewatch when you already learned to understand her character, making you much more aware of how she remembers & reflects things all the time in those relatable moments.
You guys trying to analyze the themes are somehow both right on the money and so far from prepared at the same time. Rewatching this show throws you for a loop too as you suddenly see the mountains of forshadowing that were somehow so subtle, but just as heavy.
Little moments are what makes this show so nostalgic and tragic. There are also lots of callbacks, so you have to pay attention to small, innocuous details. Frieren's love for little spells didn't start with Himmel, but Himmel definitely encouraged it to become a full-blown hobby. In the beginning of this episode, Frieren asks Fern if she loves magic, who replied, "somewhat." Fern then reinforces the occurrence by asking Frieren the same question, who replies "Somewhat, just like you." Fern can't accept that, but at the end of the episode, Fern has the realization that the moment she showed Heiter an illusion of glowing blue butterflies, she chose magic. This question of loving magic comes back around one more time in episode 10. Fern's butterfly memory comes back in Episode 3. Himmel's desire to always create statues comes back around in Episode 7.
Ooo, watching FMAB and Frieren at the same time. A battle of the top rated anime. Interesting. Darker than Black (season one) is excellent and doesn't seem to have nany reaction vidoes, as it came out in 2007.
ive watched so many animes, over 900 and more and there is only ONE that (in his own way) can match up with frieren, or is close to frieren. its Mushishi and i believe you will love it too. "can i live there" i was in japan last august (dont ever fly in august its just too hot, i mean 42° Celsius and 100% airmoisture oO) and for fck sakes i get homesick after holidays because japan has/had give me the Homefeeling i ever searched. Everything is so beautiful in japan. Frieren poured 2 Bottles. One she bought and the other is exactly this bottle Heiter decide to stop drinking.
Sousou no Frieren was/is targeted towards the Shounen and Seinen demographic. The manga series is published in the Weekly Shounen Sunday and the anime is under the Shounen Anime category.
My take is she didn't realize she had fallen in love as she remembers and travles over her previous route that the party of heros took it dawns on her.
As an advice. Don't binch watch Frieren. Obviously the first 4 episodes can be watched together. And there are other episodes that connect quite well with each other. You have to decide for yourself if you wanna connect them together. Whatever you do it will be a own experience to watch 9+10 or 8+9+10 together. But most of the episodes really need to settle down a bit. So give yourself a day or so in between them at least and if you have the itch to see more because you can not hold it and want to know how it goes forward go for it.
Months late, but since you mentioned it here: I'd always recommend Kaiju no 8. Its very much an action anime, but because the mc is 32 years old and missed his chance to be a hero, its gotta a lot more depth to the emotional impact and journey.
It's adorable that y'all watch romance and shounen respectively, because I've been showing my girlfriend a bunch of romance anime and she's been showing me like Dr Stone and One Piece 😂 Rascal Doesn't Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai is the romance I love to suggest people. I thought it would be ecchi but instead I got Steins Gate meets emotional damage
Bunny Girl would be a fun show to start this genre with tbh. She hasn't seen a lot of other big ones like Your Lie in April, Kaguya-sama, Violet Evergarden, etc. We have a lot of catching up to do lol
I think Himmel was absolutely in love with her, but her feelings for him were probably more complex. I think she loved him, but she may not have realized it until it was too late. You guys are obviously way ahead of this episode (I've only just started watching you guys, so I'll catch up with you), so you probably know already that elves don't experience romance and affection quite the same way, or at the same pace, humans do.
Recent sub, just wanna suggest The Apothecary Diaries and Dungeon Meshi as a couple of more recent anime and possibly my personal fav anime Madoka Magica which is a bit older
I feel like Frieren is autistic-coded. There's definitely a lot I can relate to, like learning how "normal" people (humans in this case) think, and the delayed emotional reactions with not really feeling much in the moment until reflecting on it later. Not sure if that's ever confirmed officially, but that's the impression I got.
If you like Frieren, you will definitely like Violet Evergarden. Especially when you watch episode 10, your tear ducts will burst with tears. It's a really delicate and beautiful anime. Please watch it sometime!🥹
you're not roleplayers, are you? 'payment' is 'payment'. likely gold. come on, now. unless stuff was determined previously to be special, it's gold. or an equivalent.
LETS GIVE IT UP FOR THE FIRST FRIEREN FRIDAY!!!
Great reaction! The first 4 episodes are the prologue for the anime plot itself. Can't wait for the next episodes :D
It's what the Hero Himmel would have done.
slice of life romance guy 🤝 battle shounen girl
You'll both love Frieren
It's going to be really interesting seeing some of the episodes 😊
They should also watch Dungeon Meshi, would also be right up their alley.
This is a particularly heavy emotional episode!

Both members of the party raised children that are like their party members. Stark has big hero vibes
This show is a masterclass in how to use flashbacks well, the bad news emotionally is that they don't stop doing it.

I love that even when Frieren is complaining about Himmel taking forever to choose a pose she's smiling.
The composer Evan Call and Frieren are match made in heaven
I knew his name from him doing such a good job on KyoAni's Violet Evergarden. As soon as I knew he was doing this as well, I was confident that I'd enjoy it, and even then this show exceeded my expectations.

Also originally aired as a 2 hour special on NipponTV.
I wish I could watch this again for the first time too
Oh you two are not ready for what coming in Frieren 😂
Enjoy the ride!

I can't wait to see gheir reaction to episode 14
One of the first tells is against the easam . Granted there is no kill like overkill but damm.
The 2nd bottle poured on the grave is the one which Heiter had when he met Fern. Since that day he stopped drinking.
Himmel: wanna come in for a cup of coffee?
Frieren: nah, I don't like coffee.

I'd like to see her reaction (as a shonen enjoyer) to koe no katachi/silent voice
Now that I think of it, the slice of life aspect of this show could be the gateway for more people to get into that genre.
nice insights. i like how you converse with each other. it's like i'm watching with close friends. =)

Alot of people forget that she chilled and meditated for like 700 years in the woods. She's old, not wise
Frieren is actually a shonen. What you guys are referring to is the battle Shonen which has dominated shoene jump since Dragon Ball.
another show that i think is similar to this is "ascendance of a bookworm" just calming and very enjoyable. give it a try when you get the chance.
I think Himmel was absolutely in love with her, but her feelings for him were probably more complex. I think she loved him, but she may not have realized it until it was too late.

😢 What a good day to be alive
Recent sub, just wanna suggest The Apothecary Diaries and Dungeon Meshi as a couple of more recent anime and possibly my personal fav anime Madoka Magica which is a bit older
May I suggest watching "Skip to Loafer" (Skip and Loafer) as a slice of life/romance anime
......26 more episodes.....it doesn't miss a beat.

For romance, if you want to laugh "kaguya sama: love is war" is always a good time.
Since you're doing MAL #1 Frieren and #2 FMAB, you might as well add #3 Steins;Gate to your list.
Welcome to the feels train anime
Sooo, we are your 4th Wallers? Wallies? xd
I'm not sure "quiet" is the right word for the show. Maybe "subtle"?
I would go with reflective or contemplative.
The word I would use to describe _Frieren_ is: "melancholy".
@@RoryMitchell00 The Melancholy of Frieren the Mage
I might be late, but from the romance shows I think the one to watch might be Kaguya-Sama if at least one of you haven't watched it.
It kind of scares me how much your friend looks and sounds like Amy adams
Please watch Kaiju No. 8 🥺🤗
you're not roleplayers, are you? 'payment' is 'payment'. likely gold. come on, now. unless stuff was determined previously to be special, it's gold. or an equivalent.
