    Howdy guys, fair question! At Hondo we are guilty of thinking the two terms meant the same thing. Some more questions that get to the heart of the matter are…
    1. Are my boots lasted by hand or pulled by machines?
    2. What materials in my boots are not pure leather? (Like cork? Like reconstituted leather paste? And of course, plastic?)
    3. How is the welt attached onto my boots? (This one determines what the repair shop can or can’t do for your boots later on)

    That black Jack was one of the best looking snake boots I’ve ever seen. I have yet to find a pair of black jacks that I can get on my feet though. Might have to try again after seeing that boot

    Using your definition for handcrafted, Black Jack boots are handmade. You will weep with joy if you ever come down to Central Texas and watch a master custom bootmaker in the Austin or San Antonio tradition hand-stitch the upper to the welt, use a steel hand-hammered 40-penny nail for the shank, brass nails in the heel, and lemon pegs in the sole. Appreciate your enthusiasm for all things cowboy boots.

    Congrats my friend! You're right about marketing. While not necessarily lying, marketing is sometimes less than truthful and embellishes their products', because "nobody sells stale bread".

    "Hello Jeremiah!
    I remember for each purchase of cowboy boots on EBAY or another site or on my favorite site, I saw the mention HANDMADE or Handmade or CUSTOMIZED .... As long as the pair of boots is solid and resistant and the kind we are looking for, I think it is our heart that speaks for the choices! "

    It makes my day to watch a new Jeremiah Craig video. Maybe different understanding of words indirectly reflects how these companies retain differences between each other. I like how boot companies can reflect different cultures, localities, founders, histories, and organizational structures.
    Also, handmade/handcrafted doesn't necessarily have to mean better quality in my opinion. I imagine that it can just be meaningful to some people.
    I appreciate the work and positive energy you put in your videos. I got a video idea: showcasing some video comments that stood out to you.

    In the western boot industry I've noticed that the definition is reversed too.
    Lucchese describes its bootmaker boots as handcrafted a lot and it's classics as hand made.
    Justins boots are mostly machine made and they scall them hand crafted. Same with tony lama.
    Then tecovas says it's boots are hand made to imply entirely done by hand, when they are handcrafted.
    Which is odd because technically handcrafted is what uses to mean entirely by hand. But marketers for years now have "technically" dialed the term back. It's frustrating.

    Horses for courses. Different market, different approach. I doubt many people are going to fork over lots of dollars on the first purchase. Ease on into the products and style. Those that become enthusiastic may go upmarket.
    Full marks to companies like Tecovas that produce an affordable product. They are growing the market. That’s a great thing!

    Made in the USA is another term. I think half the time it really means assembled in the US. Meaning parts are made overseas then shipped here for final assembly. Not what I think of as being made in the US.

    My Tony Lama 7946 boots say handcrafted but don’t have lemonwood pegs or even brass nails in the construction. That probably means they aren’t handcrafted or traditionally made right?

  • @konacopia
    @konacopia ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually learned that it's "handcrafted" that utilizes more machining at every step of manufacturing the boots, while "handmade" literally means applying more hands-on manipulation on the product with far less or no machining, like hand-sewn seams. Both generally produce a finer quality product than machine-made boots overseas. Regardless of how we define the terms, for now, whichever method requires more manual production at every step of manufacturing is going to require more time & manpower to produce...this is then ultimately reflected in the final cost. Cowboy boots for enthusiasts are functional collectible wearable art pieces, and this perception lends itself to viewing the artisans' "handiwork" by hand as being done with more detail & precision = higher quality. Granted, the quality of the materials is also a major factor as well, but anything that lends to more exclusiveness because the said item is "handmade & limited production" tends to garner more desirability. It's why comparing a $1000 handmade pair of Lucchese to a $400 handcrafted pair of Tecova boots (this assuming handcrafted means more machining by hand) isn't properly comparing like for like. It's why bootheads prefer the idea of handmade boots by Lee Miller to handcrafted by Justin...it's all about the fine art of cowboy bootmaking.

    Custom Boot-Makers will even use Handmade/Handcrafted. There are Custom Bootmakers who use paper patterns and they cut every piece of leather by hand, no stamp cutters. There is also some who do not even use sewing machines, they will actually hand sew the entire boot. I personally don't like the term 100% handmade/handcrafted when it comes to boot companies. Yes there is a lot of hand work going into it, however when comes to the Custom Bootmaker who's measuring you foot and making every aspect of the boot by hand - it's truly 100% Handmade/Handcrafted.

    I never considered the handmade vs handcrafted. My wife and I make things and sell them. I do leather work and make brooms. We have been calling our things and it's in our company name, handmade not handcrafted. Wow, maybe time to correct and change our company name. Thank you for getting my wheels spinning.

    You are so far off on your descriptions and trying to simplify the terms. Handmade means hands cut the leather with a knife or a clicker, that does not matter. Hand skived, sewn and built buy hands. Virtually every boot made has touched a sewing machine of some sort. If the top is sewn by hand if the vamp and counter are attached by hand, if the insole is attached and grooved by hand, the boot is lasted by hand, if the boot is welted by hand , if the tacks and pegs are hammered by hand, if the boot heel is attached by hand and if the boot is finished by hand, then you can call it HANDMADE! All the other marketing terms are truly misleading and confuse everyone. It amazes me that people want to buy a machine made boot from whatever country and try to convince themselves and others they own a HANDMADE boot. In the boot business you truly get what you pay for.

    • @JeremiahCraig
      @JeremiahCraig  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't make the definitions, I sourced them from research and it scaled based on the websites visited but you're right about the confusion 👍
