- It would appear that Thor is no longer the sexiest Viking, but the entire cast of Vikings certainly is. The show appears to be pretty accurate, historically speaking, in terms of the costumes, hairstyles, makeup, and general overall styling.
The fact that the cast is full of models, Muay Thai fighters, and members of big acting families just adds on to how stunning the characters look, even under all that medieval dirt and grime. Take away the get-ups, though, and the cast still looks pretty darn good.
Since it’s probably too difficult for you to imagine them without the makeup, we decided to show you what the cast of Vikings looks like in real life.

NO WAY! Who would have thought they look pretty much the same but have contemporary hairstyles. It's like they just dressed up to look like Vikings...
Even the "contemporary hairstyle" is the same in most cases, including beard, if present (no idea why they were even talking about the beards).

One of the best shows ever. Huge fan of Vikings history and the production value of the Vikings show is really incredible. Not sure if this season is the last though, will be a sad day when it's over.
Arthur Zakaryan they have season 6 filmed and have started production on 7 already so it’s a good few years till we see the end of the Ragnarssons
Yeah I was pretty bummed when they killed off Ragnar but since they are following actual viking history (mostly), there is much more to the Lothbrok family history still to be told and Ivar the boneless still has much to conquer before it's all said and done.
If you like that show you're not as big a fan of Viking history as you think.
The Vikings rocks! My favorite show on tv now. Hands down. Did I say how much I love this show? My only drawback, the seasons are too short, because, more, give me more, give me more! Thanks for posting, great info on my top fav show. JohnG

The casting is very good. If Kathryn Winnick and the others are not at all from Scandinavia, how far is England/Germany/France ? Two days by sail, so it makes not much difference. You don't change from emigrating.
I met people in USA with ancestors from Sweden. And other Americans. If they had spoken Swedish, I would not have noticed one difference at all.

Fimmel is a German last name, so it's not much of a stretch. Winnik, is either Polish or Ukrainian, which had a lot of contact with the North as well. So, just because they're from Australia or the U.S. doesn't mean they have no connection. :D

Well, Katheryn is in fact Ukrainian, which means she could be of rus or varangian descend, and both groups migrated from Sweden. Ireland and Northern England also had big Norse presence.
Not just the North of England!, but the East of England and later all of England apart from Cornwall; Scotland's northern and western most parts plus the Hebrides, Shetland, Orkneys and Faeroes, and the southern most part of Ireland. England easily has the most viking influence and Wales none at all.

Historically the women of the era would have looked nothing like the women on the show today. They are all gorgeous actresses and not to say there weren't' gorgeous women in those times but from anthropological standpoint women of that time in that region had more masculine features. Larger jawline more pronounced brow ridge and it is often hard to decipher men from women skull wise and even through arm and leg bones. This is why one of the most famous graves unearthed was attributed to a warrior Viking male when in fact it was indeed a woman.

He said that Floki played by Gustaf Skarsgard was the only Scandinavian actor. Not true. Clearly there are several Scandinavian actors in "Vikings". And Australia is NOT an ethniticity. Most of the people from that country come from England just like the people from America originate from other places.

Catherine Winnick is incredible as Lagertha. Easily one of the best characters on TV right now. They didn't show Siggy in real life. Jessalyn Gilsig is striking in real life, not saying she isn't on the show.

The Vikings is a great show. I have watched and enjoyed every episode. Ragnar is my fave. Ivar the Boneless runs him a close second. He is a devious fellow.

Niall487 it's a damn good show man, it's very historical and just fun to watch
It’s very easy to get into. Very fast paced as well, you never get bored. For example, the first episode sets up that the protagonist wants to explore what’s in the west, and finds opposition but wants to try regardless. I was expecting this plot line to last a whole season but instead in the next episode they go for it. Every single character is extremely detailed and well written, the leads and the more minor characters, the most fascinating and unique ones being Ragnar Lothbrok and Ivar the Boneless who recently had one of the most badass scenes in the show’s five seasons. Definitely start it, I’ve watched all four seasons about three or four times episode by episode, and still enjoy it.

"Andersen" is norwegian/danish spelling, "anderson" is the swedish spelling but the name is the same - "son of anders". Anders is a common name in all of scandinavia but probably most in sweden i think.

+ViolentScorl Just researched it, it has Germanic roots but isn't Scandinavian. Scandinavia is Germanic so at least it was close enough; I was going off how the name sounded. Anyways that's somewhat of a conformation of Alex's Germanic ancestry hence his appearance.
there are people with the name "ludwig" in scandinavia though. It is spelled "Ludvig" I had a childhood friend with that name... not that common.
