    Just wanted to mention that the algorithm blessed you and started showing me your videos around the beginning of March. Had never seen you before then, but now I've watched around half of your channel and even bought a few of the games solely based on your review. No idea why it started blowing up, but it has been very entertaining finding games I had either ignored or never heard of.

    Gloomhaven is a game that flopped hard on me and my friend at first, but after giving it a second try we got bit more into it and got around to understand the mechanics bit more. But I am a person who does enjoy card based mechanics myself. It is definitely a game that wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea for sure and I can see how it wouldn't be for everyone. I don't think I'd personally want to play it solo either.

    Glad to hear the King Arthur difficulty complaint echoed by a seasoned RPG/CRPG player such as yourself. I LOVED that game but the difficulty spike left quite a bad taste in my mouth. I really liked King Arthur, although I'm not 100%-ing any game, I'm satisfied with beating them. I really like that type of tactical combat, I think it's my favorite combo of mechanics, with heavy melee, abilities on cooldown and how ability progression is done (not making old moves absolete, but adding new options). That being said I'm not that interested in DLC, I didn't even try it. I'm good with just beating the main game.

  • @shawngillogly6873
    @shawngillogly6873 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I enjoyed King Arthur: A Knight's Tale, despite the difficulty spikes. But when they announced the DLC, it left me cold. That was pretty much what I did not want in a DLC. It was a game that needed more side quest content to smooth out the spikes and put more RP in the RPG side. But instead, it went the other way, and really it has enough tactical combat already.
    Spellforce interests me, since I *do* like GSGs. I don't know why the Check Out video didn't register with me.

    I do have to say that Gloomhaven is one of the best boardgame to PC conversions I've ever seen. I think it's primarily because Gloomhaven itself really has a lot of meat on its bones. Many boardgames are lightweight enough that players can keep the rules in their heads and breezy enough to play together on an afternoon. On PC, we usually want more dense mechanics because the software is helping us keep track of the correct application of the rules and we often play the games by ourselves so we can take as much or as little time as we want. And Gloomhaven is the rare kind of boardgame that actually does feel like PC adaptation makes sense. In fact, playing Gloomhaven as a boardgame with your friends is a pretty daunting task since it's a challenging and massive game. Honestly, playing the PC version might be preferable over the tabletop version.

  • @jonathanpickles2946
    @jonathanpickles2946 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I like Gloomhaven as a tabletop game multiplayer. It definitely does not require specific solutions to each map as the chaos of MP shows. However solo the difficulty is set higher & I found it pretty unfun - too much pressure to try to play optimally. This is exacerbated in the pc version because it's a bit of a chore. I've "given up" on the board game several times due to my play groups collapsing :(
    King Arthur as well I found not too hard and the power only one power spike really tough but I managed that (not on top difficulty) and they have nerfed the baddies there now. I felt you get ahead of the game in each level then the next one spiked to something manageable not something overwhelming (not on top difficulty). That sounds really odd as you are obviously far more stoic with these things than I am.
    Spellforce I gave up on really fast as it felt neither one thing nor another. I was busy at the time & mean to go back to it. Age of Wonders 4 which fits the same niche will probably put paid to that though.

    I very seldom 100% games. There always seems to be a point after which it just ceases to be fun, no matter how much I enjoy it until then. I respect greatly the fact that you do this for your reviews (mostly) but at end of day it has to become work not play. This begs a question (and perhaps a suggestion for a video). well you should definetly try to play it in multiplayer, I find it most hilarious when you lower the difficulty to something like normal but everyone plays selfishly for their battlegoals and retirement goal with minimum communication
      the whole experience becomes like working in an office with dickish coworkers and passive aggressive small talk
      I think that captures the intention of the game very well, afterall you are just merceneries forced to work together with your own end goals, not friends
      but in all seriousness, what this game succeeds in, if you follow the minimum talk rule, is that one player doesnt direct the whole team (a problem most coop board games have)

      Funny, I'd consider the conversion of Gloomhaven to PC so good that it kinda makes the boardgame redundant. Like, it's essentially the same game, but it gets rid of all the hassle involved with the boardgame, does some of the more notorious parts of the board game out of itself (trying to figure how the fuck Monster AI works) and cuts some of the unneccesary fat (Envelope X). I'd honestly tell everybody interested in the board game to just buy the digital edition at this point.

    Any "Tales of" games I just play for the story, I am in no way going to farm to 5* every skill, that is way too much of a grind that kills all the fun and interest in the game. The other achievs are pretty cool to do.

    I thought Mort's comments on Gloomhaven were quite interesting and actually have a more general relevance to cRPG design. The issue is slavish adherence to table top rules and mechanics. A lot of folks I know are heavily into authentic reproduction of beloved table top rule sets. Me, not so much. A lot of table top idioms and rules rely on two things that cannot translate to SP video game format IMO: firstly on the table top each player controls just their own character so a lot of table top rules are designed to give players something to do while they're waiting to take their turns, in effect busywork, secondly is the importance of the social dimension of playing with friends in person round the table, something that cannot be reproduced in a cRPG and must perforce be replaced with something else to make up for it - bigger maps, more encounters played much faster, heavy emphasis on exploration, huge dungeons for example.
    Often these translation problems arise from the level of complexity in the action economy. Free actions in PF: WotR and Kingmaker are a good example of this, they don't really exist in real play, they are pointless. IMHO unless a game is primarily designed for MP and TB then if you are deriving the rule set from a table top system you need to examine each and every rule to see if it actually works well in video game format and change/adapt it as necessary to make it so.

      IMO closer to tabletop = better. It's why ToEE is one on my favorites. Gloomhaven either does not translate well or is not that good to begin with.

    GloomHaven is also one I bounced off of mostly for the same reasons. While I enjoy card systems I found GloomHaven just way to boxed in. I found myself resetting way to often. And I get it is it mostly more a puzzle game then anything else. But it put me in a place were I felt if I did not take the exact class/gear load out needed for each mission I would be doomed to failure. This drove me to the forums to try and find what i should be using. Soon I was spending much more time looking up how to play each mission then actually playing the game itself. And that is what killed it for me.

    Witcher 2 I can understand not 100%'ing, it is such a mediocre title compared to 1 and 3.
    The first open area being the only area seemingly given much love and attention, after which, especially if you choose the elves, the game seems to rush to the end by comparison. I don't know if development was rushed or what but it could have used a couple more bigger and more fleshed-out open-ended areas or a half dozen more small areas.

    Gloomhaven was so ass,I played it multiplayer with my friends,who like all kind of tactical-turn based rpgs;but the card system,running out of cards = death,shitty dice rolls,the fact you're meant to retry until you get enough xp until you level up was so bad.
    I know it's based on a boardgame,where you're forced to use a dice,but generally,rng mechanics are so awful in videogames (unless used for something like,decision making). I guess DOS2 spoiled us a bit with the awesome multiplayer gameplay.

    This video is a great reminder that you can get all of the enjoyment you specifically will get from a game without getting 100% in it, you don’t have to get the achievements that are ludicrously hard at risk of your gamer card being revoked. If a game feels like work and you aren’t getting paid to play, it’s time to quit that job and find a new game.

    If you do ever decide to take the plunge to physical for Gloomhaven go with the smaller Jaws of the Lion or the sequel Frosthaven instead. They both improve upon the original in meaningful ways, with Frosthaven being the superior (if not also largest and most daunting) of the 3.

    I recently gave up on 100%ing Ring Fit Adventure. Not because I dislike exercise - I'm still going to see the game through to the end of its 20+ worlds - but because one of the minigames required for 100% requires you to hit all Perfects for like 2-3 minutes straight and has bad motion controls that make this functionally impossible. Like, imagine if you were trying to do one of the advanced jumping puzzles in a game like FFXIV and you had bad joycon drift. It's basically like that.

    Gloomhaven is one of the best board games of all time (i think it was even rated highest on BGG for awhile), The digital version means you get to skip that 30 min set up time too. There's no other game like it and I think it really shines once you get a get grasp on the rules. It's only real downside is the inverted difficulty that gives you a ton of pain in the first 10 scenarios before you get items

    • @wizardmanaia4664
      @wizardmanaia4664 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gloomhaven is in a precarious position being in how it was developed and received.
      I believe most of its popularity is bot, advertisement and pre nostalgia driven.
      As you say it has a large set up time and its difficulty inversion and need to be optimized very early and the simple immersion breaker of when you finish a scenario the money on the ground isn't assumed to be picked up. Its a beautiful gloom world with lots of racial and social variety though it falls short in both places between being a board game and a ttrpg.
      It costs far too much and has too many bits most not in use for what it actually provides as experience and its far too gimmicky in that way.
      One of the best st of all time? Maybe. Though it being on that site that high for that long is certainly precarious.

    • @RationalOrc
      @RationalOrc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@wizardmanaia4664 How is the gold thing immersion breaking? I think it's very realistic that if you don't pick up gold right away it's gone forever. Try throwing a bunch of coins in the forest, walk around for 2 hours and see how good you do at recovering every coin. Now imagine the forest has 8 foot tall beastmen that take offense to your presence on their land. And you're already tired from fighting like 10 of them.

    It's totally fine not to 100% a game, also to just not finish a game at all when you aren't enjoying it. I don't think it is a big deal. I've never tried to 100% a game and I drop a game if I don't enjoy it. Sometimes, getting all achievements just happens naturally as I play a game, but I never go out of my way for it. To me, it just feels like such a massive hassle and even stressful at times. I don't want to go as far as replaying a game I've pretty much experienced entirely and am thus done with, just to get a few of the achievements I am missing. Not worth it. There are still so many games I look forward to playing to want to spend extra time of that caliber on a game I have basically finished. Life is short and time keeps on moving, so my priority lies in experiencing as many great games as I can. Therefore I always rather move on to the next game after I've finished one, achievements notwithstanding.
    If someone enjoys achievement hunting though, that's cool. It just doesn't appeal to me, and I think it's good to decide to indeed give up on going for it, even if you like doing it in general, when it's games you don't even enjoy that much. I think it's important to make sure you do enjoy the process. Gaming is supposed to be fun, after all. So I think it's a good call to decide what game is worth it, and to wanna show love for a game you absolutely adore by 100%-ing it, I can understand.
    But, I know there's many people who feel a need to 100% every single game they play, and I feel sorry for those who are that compulsive about it, those who MUST do it, who can't rest easy and leave the game, so to say, unless they 100% it. Because I wonder; are they truly enjoying the process of it? Or is it only the sense of satisfaction and peace of mind after they got 'the checklist' done that makes it worth it? But then, I wonder; really, how long-term is that feeling, opposed to the amount of time spent to even get it? Sometimes, I feel, achievements are kind of a curse for those types of people.

My wife and I played the board game religiously, and I was excited to see a video game adaptation so that I could play with some out-of-town friends. I've mentioned it before on some videos but Dark Chronicle or Dark Cloud 2 is the most painfully boring 100% most of it because you need to get all the medals in a temporary dungeon.
    2 of the 3 of each floor being pretty easy, just speedrunning a full clear and winning at the weird golf minigame. But the other is a "use only this type of weapon to kill enemies" challenge. The two annoying ones being monster transformation which is basically useless because the devs made monster transform do little to no damage. And use only items because the only items that will do effective damage are unbuyable and uncraftable. So you basically have to make sure you have enough of the dedicated elemental stones to be able to deal good damage. Each of which you can only have 20 at a time.
    It wouldn't be so bad if you could buy or craft them but you can't.
    I love the game but anyone who has 100%ed it is insane.

    Yeah I hear you about card mechanics. It always seems clumsy and somewhat lazy to me. Too much RNG....and too much RNG in any game is a real bugbear of mine.
    Losing everything suddenly on one or two bad dice rolls really sucks. So 1 to 1 conversions of board games that don't try to reign in super random dice rolls on everything tend to get real frustrating when you expect a more fluid, tuned experience on PC.
