  • Bringing down a fully loaded truck on the damaged mountain trail. Hot brakes and sliding around made for a wild ride. Then I got to open some presents donated because of the fire!

i buy & modified to make stronger.. things.. prices great.. despite situations changing.. like come-a-longs.. REPLACE rivets or cheesy bolts with better ones.. add a pulley or 2.. cable change if needed.. just remember.. don't change til either after warranties.. or.. scrap warranties & build it to use.. & take care of your tools.. they can outlast you

Over the years Eric Smidt the founder of Harbor Freight has impressed me with his support of our schools, teachers and communities. I've bought a number of tools for dirty jobs that I thought would be just good enough to last through the one project or for folks to borrow and here we are over a decade later and the $9 angle grinder after years of fairly heavy use finally wore out while the $16 sawzall along with a number of other economical tools are still going strong. Their Marine Heat Shrink Tubing Assortment is a standard item in my shop and makes for a great water tight wire splice so great for repairs on more than just boats. Bought their least expensive 120 volt wire feed welder over a decade ago and its still works well welding beyond its MAX duty cycle building/repairing trailers, stitch welding auto-body and repairing/fabricating lawn/farm equipment. Not all of what they sell is from China either. The last time I check their Vulcan welding wire was from Italy (INE I believe) and their Aluminum Brazing from next door in Bradenton Florida.
Great to see that they've reached out extending a helping hand to Allen while recovering from his ordeal.

It's so awesome that harbor freight hooked you up! So many people hate on harbor freight tools but I myself love them. Over the past 7 years or so I've been getting all my tools from there and haven't been dissatisfied by any of the ones i use on a regular basis. Occasionally If I get a tool for a 1 time use I'll get the cheapest one, and it's not all that great but that's to be expected. I myself have been getting the "better" ones for regular use and have no complaints about any of the mid range tools I've got from there. I have almost the whole Bauer 20v brushless system of tools now and get a new one to add to my collection every few months when there is a sale or If I need that tool for a project I'm working on. At the very least Id recommend harbor freights mid range tools for any home owner that needs a tool for around their house.

Absolutely awesome of Harbor Freight helping you out with that gear! You'll VERY easily run 3.2mm rods and probably bigger too. BTW, without a grinder you could notch out a groove with that plasma cutter to fill where that crack is. That is some really handy equipment they've supplied. Maybe more rods will be needed but, it's a great start.
One thing that bugs me with welders is the puny leads they supply them with. (EDIT ON THAT: They still aren't as long as I'd like but, they're longer leads now that I see them out than I expected so pretty good). Some good thick, fine stranded but really heavy duty ones can be fantastic to have. A mobile welder I used to use, home made tractor pack being powered by a V4 Wisconson (hand crank start, arghhh) and those sort of buttery soft heavy leads about a hundred feet long worked fine. There must have been some voltage drop but they worked great and for 3.2 rods with a 195 amp supply available you'd still have PLENTY of extra amps if needed and when working all over a site, (building a bloody great piggery in the case I'm thinking of) you'll easily compensate for that with that beast.
That rev dropping while not under load, I've never used one with that but, I did see a very sweet (too small for welding though) Honda generator someone was using one day recently that varied it's revs with whatever load it was under and thought the same, a fantastic fuel AND eardrum saving feature they seem to have developed in more recent times.

I switched over to HFT years back when Sears went to the crap grade (IMHO) hand tools. A Craftsman tool would wear out or break and it was such a PITA to get a replacement- if they even made that tool anymore.
With HFT, I take the tool in and Bam! Bobs your uncle. It's swapped out no hassles. They have even broken up sets to give me a replacement, something that Sears refused to do.
I have had excellent luck with HFT tools. ( Although I do wish they still carried the Lynxx chainsaws. I love mine!)
Kudos to HFT for helping support Allen.

I'm really pleased that Harbor Freight stepped up to sponsor Alan, without him even asking. I bought a Duracraft brand drill press from the original Harbor Freight store in Van Nuys, CA in the late 70s for use at my place of work which was a plastics research lab. We used the crap out of it. Bought a similar one from them for myself later. Used that one for my race car fabricating business for decades and it's still in good shape. I keep encountering people talking smack about Harbor Freight. Most common is "You get what you pay for." Implying that because you pay a low price, you get low quality. Some of their products are relatively low quality. But sometimes, especially for a purchaser who is not going to use that tool professionally every day, that quality level is more than enough. But I've used LOTS of their tools for many years professionally and been quite happy with them. When I got laid off from the plastics industry and started working professionally at building and maintaining race cars, I worked in someone else's shop for a while. Everybody else used ONLY Snap On brand tools and made fun of mine. The boss bought a new Snap On 1/2" drive pneumatic Impact the same day as I bought one from HF. Every week he was swapping his broken Snap On for a loaner or getting his repaired one back. Anything he installed mine could take off. But things I put on would break his trying to take them off. Over 35 years later, mine has never broken and still works now. It may not make as much torque as it used to. But it works. I've never needed to use HF's warranty for broken wrenches, cause I've never broken or bent one. I have friends who only buy SO that have broken jaws off and bent handles. Yeah Snap On will replace them, but the dealers gripe about it. Do I get what I pay for at Harbor Freight? Hell yes. Would I get what I pay for from Snap On? Not only No, but HELL NO!

Harbor freight has gotten way better over the last 20 years. I use their Vulcan hood as a professional welder ever day at work and i don't have any complaints.

G'day Alan. Just a suggestion for your compressor. Run it with a power distribution board, preferably industrial quality

Going down that hill reminds me of being in my dad's '80s F250. Breaks never worked well and I was about that height, looking over the dash, when I remember going down a steep grade on one of his job sites. Crazy how an angle like that can jog a memory. Stay safe Wizard. ✌
    Way to go HF! 🙌

Good lad Al. You are a proper grafter mate. 🇬🇧👍 you need a right hand drive mountain truck so you can jump out if you need to on the way down! A massive well done to Harbour freight!!!

Hard enough riding the quad up that goat trail I can only imagine how hard it was driving the old and over loaded Power Wagon back down it.

Yeah and after all those months of having the sany excavator up there and all the work that was done on that road, I would assume it would be much nicer?
