  • With so many varieties in our skin tones, hair colors, and features, the human race is a marvel of evolution. But what if we all decided to preserve our family traits? What if everyone started inbreeding tomorrow? Would more people die? Would we be more at-risk for disease? And, uh, exactly who would mate with who?

My first BF in my teens had these small scars on each hand near his pinky. I finally asked him about it one day and he told me he had been born with 6 fingers and 6 toes. I could tell he was a bit embarrassed but he also showed me the little scars on his feet. I was just like, "oh ok" and honestly didn't think too much about it. Obviously as our relationship progressed he would tell me more about his childhood, etc. He actually spent a lot of time as a child getting treatment/surgeries for different ailments. Long story short once we got to the point he introduced me to his family I learned that his mom and dad are cousins!. I was so shocked at the time... over time I also learned that his dads brother was also married to a cousin. So his dad, his mom, his uncle and his aunt are all related. I finally was like, "How? Why?". Their reason for it was that growing up in Mexico they lived in a Ranch in a remote area so by the time they were teens only people they really spent most of their time with was each other (cousins). Everyone (their children) were all healthy to my knowledge and my ex was the only one I know of who was born with a deformity and other issues. I try to not be judgemental but whyyyyyyyy? 🥴

"Humans share 99.9% of our DNA"
Ah yes, the floor here is made out of floor.

    • @ant713m
      @ant713m 3 ปีที่แล้ว +93

It's not about sharing 99% of DNA. It's about genes. That' s like saying we all have a pack of playing cards, but ignoring that each pack is arranged differently. Genes are segments of DNA code made of the same building blocks ATCG bases and base pairs. How these are arranged affects chromosomal abnormalities.
As all humans have 2 copies of each gene (inherited from each parent) From a genetic disease prevention perspective it is better if the 2 copies are different as if 1 copy is faulty the other copy may be normal and hence the chance of genetic diseases is less likely. However, those faulty genes can still be passed on through generations so your cousins are likely to have a copy which therefore could increase the risk of a child being born with a genetic disorder.
This video is not very good so it doesn't explain this properly.
Also, we also share something like 95% of our DNA with apes, and we are not apes. Also the majority of our DNA doesn't code for anything. So it is a misleading statement to hook onto.

Another major factor involving inbreeding - because inbreeding causes a greater expression of mutant genes than usual, though the damage can be extensive when bad genes are involved, if the gene happens to code for some advantage when expressed in the environment, provided the breeding group is not so small as to leave no survivors, over time, inbreeding within a large group or even a struggling small group can lead to lightning evolution. Changes that would normally take millions of years can appear in a few thousand. This is probably why modern humans popped up so fast. At one stage we were nearly wiped out but inbreeding presumably enabled rapid changes that happened to be advantageous. Indeed to such an extent, that we arose out of our brutish ancestors in a very short time measured only in thousands, not millions of years. Don't knock inbreeding entirely - it's a double edged sword, both destructive and creative, though admittedly it destroys far more than it creates because there are just so many bad genes. For the single couple, inbreeding definitely should be avoided. So lads - don't put the hard word on your sister! Another advantage of inbreeding is that over time, it leaches out all the bad genes because so many bearers of those genes die young and fail to pass them on. There's a herd of highland cattle in Scotland that's been inbreeding for possibly several millennia, until now their genomes are entirely stable. The downside is that the herd would almost certainly have NO chance of evolving in response to a severe environmental change and would rapidly die out.

One of his sisters was developmentally disabled and another was unable to have children, which may have been caused by close kin marrying. When my father’s family was still in Germany there appears to have been a lot of endogamy where distant relative married each other and cousins would be related from several lines and the folks on other farms would also be your distant cousins.

I saw what happens to an exclusively inbreeding population with low genetic diversity firsthand. I got 4 pet mice when I was maybe 13. We had a small, enclosed plastic house in there, so they bred. And bred. And bred. I even tried to introduce new genetic material (new mice) into the population, but they killed each new mouse. Many generations after the initial 4, the mice showed common problems. There was a high incidence of visible tumors. Also, all the mice towards the end had enlarged eyelids that mostly covered their eyes. Juvenile me called it "3 blind mice syndrome." Shortly after that, they died out, eating every newborn mouse produced before aging to death. Inbreeding is no joke. I'm aware that domestic, store-bought mice already have a very low level of genetic variation, so these 4 initial mice were already quite similar. Still.

Take the shelter / enclosure that gave the mice comfort away, hoping that we would stop them breeding? I was young, & my parents didn't care. It was a train wreck in very, very slow motion. We only saw noticeable changes from the inbreeding maybe as many as 4-5 years later. Not a hint of problems for a while, & they began very subtle. I learned not to have pet mice anymore. What would you have done, at the same age I was, in the same circumstances, to *not* "let this go on?"

@@MarcVL1234 Don't get me wrong, I am not even saying anything about this happening once. There are plenty of people who make the mistake of putting in males with females and end up with offspring. What I find beyond messed up is that even after this happened for the first time, nobody at your house took that one reasonable step of separating the males from the females. Doing that doesn't cost a cent and it is 100% effective.
And I understand that if you were super young this may not have occured to you, so I apologize for being rude to you personally. As for your parents, I think they are the messed up ones to leave a young child in charge of animals, without checking in on the situation and making sure that everything is okay.

I started tracing my family tree a few years ago. It quickly became apparent to me that inbreeding was the norm prior to two or three hundred years ago. There were two main reasons for this.
The first reason is that families often saw it as a way of keeping inheritable property within the family. Encouraging or requiring first cousins to marry was an efficient method of meeting this goal. Of course, this practice can significantly restrict the gene pool if it is repeated over the course of generations.
The second reason that people inbred is a result of two factors. First, people almost never traveled more than a few miles from the place where they were born. Second, almost all communities were very small. This meant a person’s choice of potential mates was very restricted and all potential mates were closely related.
An obvious example of this occurring in the New World is the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Around 100 colonists arrived on the first voyage of the Mayflower in 1620. Many of the colonists who embarked on the Mayflower did so as part of a family group. In the first year, many of the first colonists died. Their community values required survivors to quickly remarry. Perhaps more importantly, a colonist was more likely to remain alive if s/he had a partner willing to devote his/her efforts toward the survival of the partnership. Imagine how small the potential pool of mates would have been for one of the colonists who needed to remarry in that first year.
One of my ancestors, Edward Doty, arrived on the first voyage of the Mayflower. The Dotys tended to have large families and most of their children tended to survive to adulthood at a time when this was not typical. Under these circumstances, it wasn’t too long before the Doty family made up a significant part of the potential breeding pool and Doty family members began to intermarry.
Yes, a steady trickle of new comers continued to arrive after the first year but many of these did so with the intention of joining relatives who had already arrived. Such colonists already shared a substantial portion of their genes with the existing gene pool. Unrelated colonists did arrive and contribute to the gene pool but in relatively small numbers.
I mentioned previously that most people didn’t travel more than a few miles from the places where they were born. This isn’t literally true in the case of the Mayflower and other colonists. They traveled very lengthy distances to establish new colonies. However, the colonists and most of their children generally didn’t travel far once they had established their new homes. As a result, they quickly re-established small and insular gene pools in their new homes.
This pattern repeated itself time after time in North American history. In my case, I am descended from three siblings within a single generation of the Hull clan. I am separately descended from an uncle of the three Hull siblings. Some generations later, these four lines of descent united with no apparent recognition of their relationship.
The situation was even worse among the Germanic colonists who later became known as the Pennsylvania Dutch. Many of these colonists came from related families prior to leaving the Old World. They arrived in smaller numbers in the New World than in those colonies established by the British. And, although the British allowed the Germanic settlers to colonize, they required them to form separate and isolated colonies. Their gene pools were frequently small in the Old World and became even smaller in the New World.
I have lost many days trying to unravel the relationships between the Barr, Breckbill, Groff, Herr, and Kendig families. The only things I can say with certainty are that the relationships are confusing and often times so close as to make me, with my modern sensibilities, highly uncomfortable.
Many of the early Germanic immigrants were Mennonites. They were fleeing religious persecution in the Old World and were happy to establish their own, separate communities in the New World. Many of their descendants exist among the Amish and Mennonite groups that are alive today. In writing this, I do not intend to insult the Amish or Mennonites. Inbreeding was considered normal by the standards of those places and times in history. Examples of it exist in every human’s lineage.
Many of us believe that those bad old days are long gone. However, studies conducted in the late 1980s and early 1990s showed most people died within fifty miles of the place where they were born. Other studies indicated that the single most important factor in choosing a mate is physical proximity. If you think this through, you might reach the uncomfortable suspicion that there are regional gene pools whose members tend to intermarry.
DNA tests have only become widely and cheaply available in the last few years. I am not aware of any organized studies on the topic but there is plenty of anecdotal information about couples who have taken DNA tests only to discover that they share significant amounts of DNA. In short, they are related to each other but had not known it prior to having the tests done.
This video asks what would happen if everybody started inbreeding tomorrow. I’m not entirely convinced we ever stopped.

In South Korea it is illegal to marry anyone closely related by blood. You can't get married to a 1st cousin. 2nd cousin is now possible by law but it would still be frowned upon and considered strange by many Koreans. It's a social taboo even if they are a bit more distant than 1st cousins.
In the past, you couldn't even marry a 2nd cousin if they had the same last name and patrilineal ancestry, as that was also illegal. The newer law relaxes the degree of blood relationship but also covers matrilineal side unlike the much older laws.

Certain people commit incest because they don't feel wanted outside of their family or they just lack self-esteem for themselves. Sex is a privilege. On the other hand, someone desperate enough to get laid with their blood relative doesn't deserve to be in a committed relationship. At least that's how I look at it. You'll have a hard time trusting someone like that if you end up with them and they one day bring it up hoping that u don't leave. Who wants to ruin there chances of having a good relationship someday but later has to tell someone they slept with a relative? It's the most, awkward way to mess up a good relationship because back then that person didn't care. I'm sure there are people out there who are struggling with a situation like this.

I worked with the woman one time and as we started speaking she mentioned her husband and how they met. She had moved to California with her cousin but that relationship failed so she moved back home and met up with another cousin and after getting married they had 3 kids together. I asked of she had thought of going on Springer and she thought it was funny but said that most of her cousins date other cousins but the older relatives looked down on them, with good reason, so they didn't have family reunions anymore.

What if you find this video a couple of days after finding an article about the stillborn twin daughters of Tutankhamun and Ankhesenamun? It happened to me! Akhenaton the "heretic pharaoh" was married to his sister, and was the father of both Tutankhamun and Ankhesenamun. It is not clear whether Ankhesenamun was Tutankhamun's full sister or half sister. The article suggested that one twin was much larger than the other, and suggested a rare syndrome that would have been due to inbreeding and made it impossible for either twin to be born alive at that time.
