If you're going up 81 you'd be crazy not to stop and fish the Clinch river and Holston river right past the Tennessee line. Holston is the best smallmouth fishing in the area and the clinch for multispecies is unbeatable.
I never known how beautiful Tennessee creeks an rivers are crystal clear and big rock ledges I mean just beautiful my creeks in CT while some are nice that hold trout most are dirty with chubs if that
Wow!! Beautiful 3lber!! Love the scenery. Thanks for showing us how to rig the hellgramite. I have had mixed results with it here in SoCal. I bought some from Mister Twister.
Man, what an awesome creek! Those were some quality smallmouth for sure. The more I watch your videos, the more I realize I live in the wrong part of the country. Loved the video.
Wow John, you really are one of the most consistent and dedicated content creator on TH-cam. You are always pumping out good, quality videos. Anyways keep it up 👍🏻
@@mikeboyce584 Same here. I'm 58 years young (Ha ha), and as for me, I plan on going to a place here in Virginia called Douthat State Park. The absolute best fishin' in that Lake seems to be at the Northern section of the Lake. Will you do me a favor, and wish me luck, and say a Prayer for me? I'd appreciate it. God bless!
Got you by a few years I'm 70 you want to go Creek fishing tomorrow knees and back and heart don't work like they used to but the good Lord grants me at least one day a month that it's workable and I thinking for that bless you too man have a great day tomorrow
Love the commitment and I've got to fish this water. The biggest smallies tend to be light bites on the jigs. Topwater is 50/50. Appreciate the walk through. Blessings brother man
We used to carry a sane and a rake with us when we hit the local creeks. We would sane for live helgromites and absolutely crush the bass on live Helgromites!! Their skin is like leather and would stay on the hook for several fish!! Best creek bait ever!!!
Definitely an awesome adventure. Thank you for sharing your hooking setup. I couldn’t find the vlog that showed it but I remember you talking about it and figured it out. I enjoy your blogs. You are Blessed!.
God made the perfect fish when He made the small mouth bass Nice intro music and surroundings great fishing day what a nice random spot you chose you got the eye.
He sure did! They're nice and Bronx, with vertical bars on the sides, and, generally speaking, give ya more of a spirited fight than, say, a Largemouth Bass will, although a Largemouth Bass can still pack more in the way of a stubborn, bullheaded kind of a fight.
Yea man thanks for showing how you rig it. Definitely gonna try that sideways thing. I have switched over to that same hook and you are definitely right about less snags with it. Keep on keeping at it man. Doing a great job!
Another great video! Thanks for sharing the set up and rig that you are using! I bought some hellgrammites, winnows, and craws from Nikko a few weeks ago. Even got me a new wading bag like you recommended from Piscifsun. Keep the content coming and scriptures coming!!!
I love watchin your videos Brother, it reminds me of when I was a kid. If I wasn't @ school or doin chores I was fishin the Creek South of the house, n all the surroundin pond's. Stay safe man, God bless
was watching the b-roll at the start and was like “dang that looks a lot like some virginia river” and i’ll be it was! thanks for the tips man, very helpful to learning anglers like myself.
Great outing in a stream that looks custom designed for smallies. That big boy was something else, man. Any time I'm in moving water, I go right to the Hellgrammite-Bulletz combo. I'll have to try hooking it sideways. Might be even better. Thanks for the entertainment and advice. Time well spent.
Thank you so much!! I finally got my hellgramites and they're so tough so I am struggling to find the right fit on the hook. I've caught a few bass but after seeing this video my confidence is boosted! Thank you!
As I have been searching your library of videos for stuff to remind me that winter will end I’ve wondered why you fish a medium rather than medium-light rod. Got my answer here! Looks like an awesome day that was a beautiful smallie great work John grateful for your videos here on the dead of Michigan winter!
I love to wade-fish for smallmouth in Fall Creek, in Indianapolis, IN. I saw your video about fishing here. Love your channel. I often learn tips and tricks. Thanx for sharing your knowledge and skills. Tight Lines Forever (TLF).
You inspired me I came to Roanoke VA with my wife for her job I went wade fishing I caught a 17" smallmouth in creek that runs into the Roanoke River Thanks for the inspiration I had a blast catching smallies and rock bass on the Nikko hellgramite with EWG Ned head
You are in my neck of the woods finally! Have fished that creek for many years. That creek produces some great smallies and the closer to the fish hatchery you get you can pull some big rainbows too. Especially when it floods. Great video as always!
Nice Smallies! They are such quick swimming fish. No sooner do you release them then they're Off To The Races again! Great drive-by creek find. 3 lbs 1 oz ... EXTRA NICE BIGGIE!
Just "caught/ hooked up" with my first large largemouth bass today on the Nikko hellgrammite! Freaking broke my line as I was going to net him. Probably 18" or so. Damn exciting as hell though!! Was using 6lb line. I guess not heavy enough.
Just ran across your channel this week. Man you have me wanting to find some creeks to fish! I’ve waded lots of creeks with my kids, but never even thought to take a rod and reel. Great videos! I’m subscribed to both of your channels now. 👊😎
I like how you explain your setups..can you give me your opinion on the necessity of a leader line and the importance of it..any input will be greatly appreciated..thanks..good luck out there
You can tell how old some of us are because we still call it a grampus instead of helgramite. Actually a Dobsonfly. They way you rig them through the side does work better. Appreciate all of your tips
There is no doubt the Hellgermite definitely works for you. You have that lure mastered 👍 nice smallmouths I ordered some useing your code . I can’t wait to try them!!!
Man, I like to just watch you catch fish. It’s nice to see your technique. If I’m in a place making videos, I’m using the bait that catches fish. If people want to learn different baits, you can make a video about that. Creek fishing adventures seems to be about getting out in nature enjoying what God made. Keep doing what you are doing!
I enjoy your videos very much I will say you’re the number one video I watch I do watch a few others but you’re the top of the list I enjoy watching I enjoy learning❤️
Used a nikko hellgrammite for the first time this weekend. Local creek a few miles off the TN river. Caught several smaller large mouth and one close to 3lbs. It was quite the fight on a ML rod and a 2000 size reel out of a kayak.
That’s my neck of the woods mr. John. There’s several more good places like that close by. Reed creek and Cripple creek. Look them up next time you’re in the area. You’ll definitely be pleased. Thanks for the videos man. Me and my boys watch all the time.
I don't use soft plastics, but mainly fish for salmonids. But 2 great all purpose lures are Worden's Rooster Tails in Grey Minnow and Salmon fly- 1/4 or 1/2 I use but I'm fishing the Great Lakes/Niagara River. Grey Minnow is white tail dressed/silver Blade and Salmon fly brown/gold blade. They have smaller sizes but I want Steelhead/Browns/Smallmouth.
So awesome! I love watching your videos catching fish while wade fishing and kayaking. I'm from FL, and mostly saltwater fished, especially saltwater wade fishing in the flats for Trout, Flounder, Redfish, and Spanish Mackerel. I plan on trying to do more freshwater fishing once it gets cooler, so I got some of the lures that you showed on several videos to try out. Eventually I plan on moving somewhere near the mountains to be closer to lakes and streams so I can do some of the fishing that you do. Definitely learned a lot so far from you, and looking forward to watching more of your videos. Definitely amazing that God opened doors for you to do what you love to do and make a living doing so. Keep up the good work! God bless and tight lines!
Hey bud I grew up in FL as well and fished Steinhatchee, Keaton Beach, St. Augustine, Ocala National Forest, Suwannee and Santa Fe rivers. I hit the road to travel the country and fish! The mountains are beautiful
Great video Jon. My brother just caught a tank like your 3lber. So exciting when you hit a new creek and get the bigger fish to bite. Do you prefer the helegramite over the trd craw?
love your videos bro keep em coming! keep on 81 and you come thru rockbridge county holla at me man! id love to see what you pull out of the maury!!hell id love to fish with you lol.it runs clean thru the county before it dumps in the james. tight lines buddy!
The last part of this video when you’re giving instruction was the best part I wish you would do that more often.

If you're going up 81 you'd be crazy not to stop and fish the Clinch river and Holston river right past the Tennessee line. Holston is the best smallmouth fishing in the area and the clinch for multispecies is unbeatable.
John, don't apologize for the Nikko Hellgrammite. It catches fish for you.

Dude that smallie was a dream come true! Great job John!
Dude I totally love the helgermite.
I’ve caught over a hundred smallies in the last two weeks in my creeks.
Thanks John! From a 45 year outdoorsman! You do best learning new tricks and tips…
These are the best fishing videos out there. Thanks!
This video makes me miss living and fishing smallies streams even more than I do
Going creek fishing tomorrow!!!
I'm going to try to do this same thing but I need a prayer 🙏 or 2 ain't no spring chicken anymore.
You and I don't know each other, of course, but catch a whole bunch of big 'uns, man! I wish you the best of luck.

Thank you for the setup on the lure. That's what I've been waiting to see. Great fishing to you sir.
Love the commitment and I've got to fish this water. The biggest smallies tend to be light bites on the jigs. Topwater is 50/50. Appreciate the walk through. Blessings brother man
Nice! Thanks for breaking down the set up.
Thanks so much for the Nikko Hellgrammite content, and tips! Definitely going to give this a shot next season.

I'm glad you stoped there John 👍👍
Forgot about how good the fishing was there. Been 15 years since I fished it. Great video!
Love me the Nikko Hellgrammite. Nice video. You're almost to that 100K mark.

I was having trouble getting the hook through the hellgrammite too. Tough plastic for sure.
@@mojodojo5533 oh yeah. I love that about them. And John isn't kidding. Bass love these things!!
