Hellgrammite Hammer Time On Some River Smallmouth

- A fun day of kayak and wade fishing smallmouth bass on a small river using a Nikko Hellgrammite on a 1/8oz Keitech round head jig. After this trip I'm impressed with the hellgrammite, I caught some really nice fish on it and almost everything I put it in front of attacked it!

Everytime I watch you fish this river I am amazed. Its like, “today Im going to try an old reebok pump sneaker from my child hood and see how we do.” First cast-5 lb smallie crushes it while another school of smallies swarm near by like piranhas attacking a honey baked ham lol

I've watched a number of your videos and the thing that impresses me the most is the way you manage your kayak. Every motion is calm and deliberate, thus assuring nothing disastrous happens. Depends, one of the best secrets to fishing is to go where there is no fishing pressure. They will bite if they are other use to seeing a lure. Have a nice kyack like his makes it much easier to do that.

Here in central ohio helgramites , for me, are 2nd only to a large soft crawl when using live bait. Then a nice chub minnow. I just found ur videos a couple days ago and r throughly enjoying them. Thanks for the entertainment.
nice video, I used the helgramite and caught a nice smallmouth and a bunch of crappie, I had it hooked weightless.

8lb. line, a bronze longshank 2/0 J-hook with copper wire wrapped around the shank for weight.

Also, if you want to catch FAT river smallies and giant pike, come to NY and find me on the Mohawk River. I was catching 16-22in fish all summer and fall, so big that a 16incher weighed 3.12 they’re just ridiculously built in the river ever since goby became a forge on top of craw, minnow, suckers, leeches, all bug. My whopper plopper landed me 25 4lb+. Just the month of October, on shore, one weighing 5.3. I have pics of absolute giants even some footage

the case lures look great 2 but dont have the lively wiggle of the sides like urs do still i see them gettin pummeled too
Hey you should look into the Doug rig that fishnfx makes. They were designed specifically for the nikko helgramite using a trapper tackle hook.

When I lived in Ohio we used them all the time . This one of my new favorite channels. Just received my Phantom Spider I saw from a previous video. Was never a Big Kayak fan, but ! I’ve never seen anybody upstream from the island where it gets rocky and the current picks up. It takes a little work getting up there but it’s well worth it!
Fantastic vid; maybe your best yet, but I may be biased because that's my favorite kind of water to fish, although these days it's mostly with a wooly bugger on a fly rod (have yet to tie a decent hellgrammite). The hellgrammite has been my favorite for years when using spinning gear, with a split shot about 15" up, but they were either hard plastic with no movement or cheap rubber that would tear off after a feisty bluegill or bass (I bought many of those; two per pack, IIRC). Illegal to use the real ones where I live, but I do believe they're the best natural bait for these waters, and with that tough skin, they keep going, and going, and going. Just be careful with the big ones because they will draw blood. Seems you're doing a lot more talking these days. Thanks for taking us along!

That’s the kind of stuff I dream about during winter! I actually sat there and picked off that whole school! At least six or seven of them, they were mostly smaller fish though so I just included that first one to keep the video from getting too long.

I swear this is the best TH-cam fishing channel to watch, I fish in similar conditions in the same areas (sort of, a bit more north from you.) I love love this channel!

Thanks for putting the smallmouth bug back in my head . Best freshwater fighter pound for pound in the northern hemisphere along with American shad . Now you go to the southern hemisphere there are freshwater fish that fight like saltwater . The Amazon basin is full of them . I've used helgrammites on trout and i'll surely try them on smallys but we always used live or plastic crickets . Pardee lake in Northern California has great smallmouth fishing along with Kokanee , another incredible fighter and jumper .

This is an old vid, but hope you get this. I watch all your new vids, and note you always throw your baits over the side, while you deal with your catch. How often do you catch another fish on the bait, after you through it over the side, and while you're dealing with your catch? I'd like to see some vids, or maybe a collauge, of these catches.
That’s happened to me about a dozen times over the years. Several of those are in past videos, one even came up and hit a topwater lure sitting next to me!
I'm totally trying those for Steelhead. They should make a sand shrimp coloration. (chartreuse with hot pink stripe)
Nikko actually makes a shrimp plastic as well, they come in 2.5” and 3.5” sizes. They don’t have that exact color pattern but they have a few different pink and chartreuse options.

Never reveal the names of your fishing spots unless you want to see them over run. I once had a favorite spot for splake in the central Adirondaks and Outdoor Life ran an article. The following summer, you couldn't find a flat spot near the water that didn't have a tent pitched. That was a spot that was a 3 hour paddle and 3 portages in. Just sayin'.

Not a boring fishing day! Certainly not. A lot of smallies, many of which coming out from ambush spots just beneath the bank. The clarity of the water, the good amount of productive obstacles...and a beautiful sunny day. Also the nice feeling of accomplishment after successfully testing a new lure...can you get any more than that?

I have similar smallmouth fishing here in Arkansas. The smallies you catch are much larger. Not as much grass here in the Ozarks but plenty of rock shade.
