If my pastor referred to the Bible as a “cleverly cobbled together group of manuscripts” I and my family would be looking for a new church.

We attended his church for a few years and when Covid hit , all of his churches closed down. Honestly it was just the excuse that I needed, not to go back. You are 100% right about his teaching. I knew something was off but it made so much sense when he said anything. I’ve been a Christian since the 1970s and should have known better, it was a wake up call for me to get back to basics and get back into the Word. ALL of the word, I’ve come to love the Old Testament so much. It’s impossible to fully understand the New Testament without knowing the Old.

The New is the old revealed for sure. I find it invaluable in talking to Jehovah Witnesses.
John 5:39,40 Jesus talking to the pharisees: You search the scriptures and in them you think you have life but they are what speak of Me and yet you are unwilling to come to Me so you may have life.
The scriptures He was talking about were the Tanakh.
They are also invaluable for understanding the middle east conflict that is going on right now.
I also listened to Andy when I was a baby Christian and he sounded so plausible but the Lord is faithful and led me out of that nonsense.

To answer Andy at 1:32:50, I was 18 when my college roommate started asking me some difficult questions about Christianity and the bible. In a truly curious spirit she was asking about political ideas, my view on things as a Christian, verses other atheists online didn't like that sounded strange to her. She was severely hurt by hyper-charismatic Christians in her past and as a teenager looked up to popular athiest speakers like Richard Dawkins, my family and I were the first Christians in her life who encouraged questions and tackled them with her. We didn't push against her questions, we didn't circumvent them and ABSOLUTELY didn't dismiss the bible as unimportant or anti-Christian. My parents instilled in me respect and reverence for scripture, not a distain for it, and it lasted me well through a very un-believing campus.
If I didn't know the answer to a question, or didn't know a lot about the verse she was pulling up, my instinct and response was "I don't know.... lets go look at it together", and we would pull up the NIV and read the entire chapter to put it into perspective and context. It worked out EVERY time and strengthened my confidence in the bible with each instance. Isn't that what we want as Christians who take the Bible as authority? We want our sons and daughters to be more confident in their faith? Andy keeps talking about worldview, our worldview is more vibrant and informed the more we know our scriptures. Beware those who try to convince you not to learn scripture.
My friend gave her life to Jesus before she graduated college and has been Christian ever since. She's one of my roommates now and does a lot of her own research. Andy shouldn't be shying away from the tough conversations. It sounds to me like this was just too much conflict to him, and he's not cut out for the arguments, so he's going to ignore all of it to avoid confrontation. Terrible thing to say to those who are searching for answers. Stronger-willed people of other religions and worldviews generally do NOT respect lukewarm "Christians" who attack their own holy scripture. Pray for this man and all his congregants.

Great testimony. I always wonder about so many ppl claiming to have been "severely hurt" in church/ In many cases it is ppl's natural mind reacting in horror to the truth of their own fallen state perfectly described in God's Word. I've met countless ppl claiming to be "hurt" in church, and by far, less than a quarter of them, maybe in the single digit % really had anything truly offensive happened to them. Vast majority heard something they didn't like assumed something, or had a normal human interaction and chose to use that as an excuse to go back to a life that is actually hurtful.
Conversely, nearly every single lost person I know has ACTUALLY been severely hurt by, sin, in bars, chasing their own way, having promiscuous lifestyles, etc on and on, and somehow they don't use that as an excuse to quit.
I'm glad your friend was open to the Word, and you were there to learn with her and guide her. Praise God for open willing hearts.

Andy was my youth pastor growing up. I know him personally. I have left his church 20+ years ago. But had an interaction in 2017 to address his stance on homosexuality. This was before it was so public. In a conversation with one of the pastors there, the pastor was a guy that I went to school with and went to youth group with me, so I know him well. He refused to believe what scripture said about homosexuality but also in that meeting, I discovered that Andy doesn’t believe in hell. So that’s why he continues to diminish the Bible so he can preach Andy’s word.

When Charles Stanley was close to death, Andy tried to use him in an interview video to support Andy's teaching. It seemed clear that his father was a little confused, but rather than give Andy's support for his satanic teaching, Charles simply said "i think we can all be grateful that Andy is Andy." He preached a number of messages to refute Andy.
Unfortunately not everyone in our family will know Christ. The road is narrow and difficult. Personally, I think Andy is in the closet. I've never met a person who positions homosexuality as morally superior who was not gay. I also think he is more interested in money from parishioners that teaching the word of God.
I know we should all pray for him, but I sense so much arrogance and false pride in him and his voice that I think he has placed himself beyond salvation. It would take a lot to humble him enough to admit and correct his false doctrine.

This made me genuinely sad. And then somewhat angry. Andy Stanley clearly suffered a crisis of faith at some point in his life that he hadn't fully recovered from at the time of this sermon.
He sounded like a man who managed to piece back a shattered faith, but his best attempt was to patch it back together with the pieces of understanding he was most comfortable with. While that's understandable as he worked through his recovery, he had no right to impose this new version of his faith on anyone else, much less a mass of people.
He also sounded intimidated by and oddly admiring of the intellectual atheists he kept referring to. They clearly impressed him more than they should have. What a pity he couldn't withstand the devil within them. He refers, so egregiously, to the Bible as cobbled together, when his faith is clearly what's cobbled together. I hope he receives the touch he so clearly needs from the Holy Spirit, and I pray that one day he'll mount the same pulpit to repudiate this heresy. 🙏🏽

While listening to Andy Stanley, I was reminded of Luke ch. 16, the rich man and the beggar. The beggar died and went to Abraham's bosom, and the rich man died and went to Hades.
The rich man begged Abraham to let Lazarus warn his brothers about the torment of hell, so they could repent and be spared. Abraham refused, saying "If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead."
How fitting this quote is for this sermon! Andy Stanley argues that the resurrection should be the basis for faith, but this passage tells us that even resurrection from the dead cannot change the heart of one who is set against God.

Judges 11:26-40, Jephthah sacrifices his daughter in the wake of Abraham offering Isaac. Why is this important? Paul's celibacy doctrine in 1 Corinthians 7:33-34 and 1 Timothy 5:11. Is Christ for marriage, or for celibacy? Matthew 16:25 and Matthew 9:10 (Lord's Prayer) advocate submission, but submission to what? Jesus calls Peter "Satan" in Matthew 16:23-25 right after establishing that Peter is the church in Matthew 16:18. John 10:10 says that the thief comes to steal, but Revelation 16:15 and Thessalonians 5:2 say that Jesus will come as a thief. 1 Thessalonians 5:4 says that some are not in darkness, is that darkness forbidding of marriage, alcohol, and pork, as per 1 Timothy 4:3?
I ask you to consider the implication of 1 Timothy 4:3 in reference to Christianity as Mark 7:5-16 says of the Pharisees, that they follow the teachings of Men, and view John 10:10 in the light of a warning that Christianity, the Bible, is the thief that is coming to steal and destroy.

@@marvinmallette6795 Jephthah didn't sacrifice his daughter like an animal, he offered her to be in service of God instead of marrying her off to a man. Paul did not teach that people should be celibate, he was saying that being single allows for more focus on ministry and serving God; he also mentioned people who forbid marriage and called that a doctrine of demons. He said if you don't have the ability to stay single (focused on ministry) it's better to marry.
Jesus didn't say that Peter is the church, he said he would build his church on the foundation of the truth that "Jesus is the Christ," as Peter stated. Then later he called Peter "satan" because in that moment Peter was trying to work against the will of God for the Messiah. The term "satan" means "adversary." Jesus calls Satan "the thief" who steals, kills and destroys. He then contrasts that by saying that he (Jesus) comes that they might have Life, and have it more abundantly. He describes himself as being "like a thief" only in the context that when he returns it will be sudden and unexpected, like a thief breaking into a house; wicked people will be unprepared. It's a metaphor.
There are answers to your confusion and lack of study, but you can twist almost anything and take it out of context to say something it doesn't.

@@HarmonicWave I don't see where any of that changes what I said. You do not make your argument clear, or convincing.
Common teaching is that Judges 11:26-40 is descriptive, not prescriptive. That is, the chapter is not about what one should do, but merely what happened.
My argument is that Paul's teachings, presumably in light of Judges 11:26-40, and Genesis 38, etc., are transformative works which are prescriptive.
I also emphasis that it is not clear that Paul is "not" teaching celibacy, to the degree that it does, in fact, appear that Paul is in fact teaching celibacy, if you "chew your food", and allow the writing to properly digest.
Hebrews 12:1 purports a race that shall be run, a marathon of endurance. This challenges the reader to strive for perfection. But what does that perfection look like, when you are studying the Bible, and then when will you complete your studies?
Genesis 1:28 would seem another verse at odds, but the Dispensationalist who argues from a New Testament Only position might find that it is transformed into the great commission, Matthew 28:19. If you extract Hebrews 11:12, and apply that verse "out of context" to the Christ as an example of a reflection of Christ in scripture, you might get a clearer concept of how the puzzle is being assembled.

Just want to clarify for you: The conference was NOT trans affirming. The conference was neutral -and its goal was to help CHRISTIAN parents who have an LGBTQ child and don't know where to turn or where to get resources. What a fantastic way to love our brothers and sisters in Christ who are Christian parents searching for how to move forward and how to treat their child. To that end, the organizers did invite some speakers who themselves are affirming and other speakers who themselves are non-affirming...but the conference itself was neutral. Some people can get mad that they allowed some affirming speakers to talk to these Christian parents, but what are we afraid of? Just because a speaker was affirming does that automatically mean these Christian parents will accept everything they say as gospel? Do these Christian parents not have the Holy Spirit to help them take what is helpful and leave the rest behind? To act like a Christian can NEVER learn anything from an affirming speaker is ridiculous.

After being saved for over 30 years, I have found from conversations that the great majority of people are more struggling with spiritual abuse they have experienced or they are battling why God allowed catastrophic trauma to happen in one’s life. Not once has someone told me the Bible is what kept them from the faith. Unfortunately, many churches don’t know how to respond to those with spiritual abuse or severe life trauma. Many times, their actions make things worse. Sometimes people just need to feel loved and safe before they can start talking about the basics of following Christ. I know that was life changing for me. Gave me a chance to find my feet so I could delve into truths I hadn’t not delved into before. Also, most churches don’t offer any form of discipleship. That is a huge thing for those of us who weren’t raised in a Christian family and don’t have anyone in our lives that we can talk to.

Greetings, Mike. Last night, I got a livestream that had your face on it, so I went to it because I think you are about the most thoughtful Christian teachers in the country today (praise God).
I was absolutely deceived once this started, for a youth pastor came on and attempted to refute your video on PSA.
He was snarky and arrogant, using philosophy without much Scripture to support his Catholic and Orthodox heresy.
His thinking was replete with what I call IOSTRs, which are when we can say or imply that after going to a prooftext, "It Only Stands To Reason," we have been subtly moved from the thoughts of God to the thoughts of men, which are vulnerable to deception.
This is philosophy, which creates contention but does not carry the authority and power of Scripture. But it really feels good, for it strokes our egos (I battle this daily).
I was soundly born again 46 years ago and grew up in a home where my mother was decipled by M.R. HeHanns' daughter for much of my youth. I have wonderful memories of John Wolvord and many other theologians discussing theology and eschatology at our dining room table.
I got soundly saved at 19 and had an appetite for studying and understanding the only book that calls (3800 times) "the Word of God".
This young man sowed the most confusion I have ever heard.
One thing I would encourage you to use that sound mind to study, for yourself the "Church Father" writings that we were deceived into quoting and are now studying.
With so many people around me going into Rome, I felt I needed to study these writings over the past six years.
The more I dig, the more I get angry at myself for quoting well-curated quotes from these spurious, unreliable writings.
When one investigates these writings, one finds some orthodox ideas, often with different definitions, along with a mountain of Rome's heresies embedded within (that we naive evangelicals just ignore).
When we selectively quote something to those we teach today, the next generation will remember their names and read and believe the things we ignored, and thus will be reasoned into Rome.
We need to first avoid this swamp, which brings confusion and inadvertently validates Rome.
Then, it would be wise to study the subject and warn the church of the many heretical things taught by these writings.
After you accumulate all the heresy they taught and warn us of, you will have to say, "If these people are occasionally quoting the Word of God but have so many errors, why don't I ignore them and return to Scripture, history books up to the end of the first century, and lexicons? The rest is just too murky and pseudodepigraphic.
I sincerely believe the Mormons have fewer problems than these writings, and we would wisely never quote their writings for we would say they validate Mormonism... The same should apply to spurios "church history.
Stay in the fight, little brother, and I praise God for your impact on the Bride.

A part of that is what I would argue was a translation error. The Hebrew word can mean child as we use it, yes, but the word is much broader, closer to how something like “youth” might be used in English. From there, you might notice that the (as we later see rather large) group is not only mocking a prophet of God (not the smartest thing) but basically telling him to drop dead (“go on up” like Elijah did). It could be argued that that constitutes a threat. That there is even a group this large in the culture of the time suggests nothing good about their character since they’re clearly not where they’re supposed to be (they should have been helping their fathers with work or learning something useful, not hanging out outside the city. The concept of freetime for non-adults we have today is a very modern one). Then there’s the absurdity of the reported number of casualties. That it even got to the double digits suggests that the boys decided to not run for their lives back to the city but instead decided to pick a fight with them, which clearly didn’t go well. Most people focus on the boys being on the wrong end of a bear attack rather than ask the question of what they were doing there in the first place or why they thought insulting a prophet was a good idea.

Yes, the complete Old Testament was available at the time of Christ and circulated within the Jewish community. So, what Andy is saying is not true. I believe that Andy, in his attempt to remove obstacles that make the church resistible to the world, actually views the Bible itself as one of those obstacles. I also believe an underlying reason Andy has this view is that he, personally, has issues with certain sections of scripture. I won’t say specifically what those sections are but he has in the past called sections of the Bible ‘clobber passages’ when it’s simply God’s truth.

If someone tried to take that away, I'm ruined. The scripture and Christ's fulfillment of it has power, sustaining power. I have an unshakable Rock. But again, thank you, Mike, for being so Christlike in presenting the truth in love. God bless you and yours.

I came to the Lord 6 years ago at a very bad time in my life, I was 66 years old. I started with s couple of soft books, but decided I’ll start with the OT and finish with the New Testament. I called a long time Christian friend and told her how much I was struggling with the OT. She told me that she thought I should start with the gospels and she was 100% right. I couldn’t get enough of it for years and years. When I first started listening to Bible teaching it was Chuck Smith. I was able to go from Genesis through Revelation. Then I started watching Calvary Church Bible studies. .

I had no idea who Andy was until three years ago when I started going to a discipleship group that wanted to go through one of his sermon series for the next study that we did. It was the most shallow study I think we ever went through. I much prefer studies where we go through scripture verse by verse. When I was new to the group I had little influence in our studies. As time has progressed, I started recommending studies/sermon series that went through books of the Bible. Now, we aren’t watching studies, we are using the scripture as our curriculum. We are working our way through Daniel. Everyday, we read the chapter we are on for that week, we all have different resources we like to use, commentaries, I like listening to Verse By Verse sermons, and then as we come together each week, we go through that chapter together and discuss what scripture is saying.
Something I’ve come to understand about the Bible is that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Words are the physical manifestation of the intangible into the world (meaning your thoughts are not able to be know in the world until you give words to them and speak them into the world). Jesus is the physical manifestation of God in the world, he is the Word. All things were made through Him, and when you look at how God created the world, he spoke it all into being (God said let there be light and there was light). Today, we have The Word of God in the form of the Bible… words written by prophets and apostles. The Holy Spirit speaks fluent Scripture. When I’m in a situation and I’m about to pop off in my human nature and I find myself suddenly thinking of a scripture that makes me stop and reconsider my next words, that is the Holy Spirit. Also, there are times when I’m in a conversation with someone and out of nowhere I’m thinking about how a scripture applies to that situation. I might not be able to say what book and verse, and I might not even say “the Bible says”, but I’ll speak the Truth that came to mind and without fail God speaks to them through that every single time.
You can’t know someone unless you converse with them. You can sure know ABOUT them, but there is a difference in knowing about someone and knowing them personally. What Andy is teaching is knowing About Jesus, and I hate to break it to him but even the demons and Satan believe in the resurrection. We must know Him personally, and we know him through scripture because that is how he revealed himself to us.

I am currently unable to work, so I spend my days on X witnessing to atheists.
Being saved for 46 years, I always ignored the slavery subject, though it didn't settle well.
After someone confronted me about this subject last year, I felt it was time to study it for myself.

I found it to my delight, that it was antithetical to what you and I learned about our country's corrupt system.

We've been in a few churches where the Pastor or leadership came into a new revelation or understanding. This understanding morphed into something that looked less and less like Christianity by any standard. All of these ministries and ministers no longer exist. Andy believes he has a revelation of believing in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior by trusting what the Apostles say but not relying on the Bible. How do any of us find out what these Apostles had to say? ... By reading the Bible which we are not to rely on ?... 🙄 If previous track records that I've seen are any indicator... Andy Stanley's ministry and North Point Church will cease to exist in the not to distant future.

It was sad to watch as he used to be a great pastor. Many of the congregation called this 15yrs ago, he absolutely became what he was warned of for starting to water down messages in hopes of making unbelievers the most important members of the church. Am I missing something? I feel like the biggest concern with Andy’s argument is that I know about Jesus’ resurrection is through the BIBLE! He stresses that we should be a Christian by what we “saw” and “heard”, but I wasn’t a disciple of Jesus when he roamed the earth. At the end, he talks as if he was Peter and stresses that he believes in Jesus only because of his resurrection, but then asks how our children will defend their faith and how they should do it just like Peter would. We can’t Andy! We didn’t witness Jesus death and resurrection. We have God’s inspired word that details the story of Jesus throughout it and tells us of his miraculous death and resurrection because of his love!

One thing that fascinates me about Andy is that he seems to think that he is casting off the shackles of simple-minded fundamentalism when, in reality, his teaching on scripture is intellectually vacuous and has no scholarly support. I know of no scholars-be they unbelievers, believers, conservatives, liberals, etc.-who wouldn't spit out their coffee at some of his wild, Marcionate claims.
Paul didn't "have a bible"? Paul quotes, alludes to, echoes, scripture at every other turn in his epistles. His thinking is saturated with the OT. Paul didn't really even leave Judaism but saw Christ as the climax and realization of Jewish hope and belief.

I don't dismiss the Bible, but it IS cobbled together. The Genesis creation story is not one, but two stories cobbled together. In Genesis 1, plants and animals are created before humans, while in Genesis 2, Adam is created first, followed by Eve and then animals. The first story primarily uses the Hebrew name "Elohim" for God, while the second uses "Yahweh" (often translated as "Lord". These are important differences indicating different writers. It doesn't diminish the importance of Scripture, but it means we should understand it differently than conflated Sunday School teachings.

He never even cracked open the Bible. Strike 3 was when he preached tolerance. I believe we should be tolerant to a point but I also believe we should call out evil. This pastor was a go along to get along. My impression. Chain church. Nothing is wrong with a chain church, it's just not for me. Thank you and God bless.

His daddy did not teach such things and it's so sad to see the ministry turn to this. He needs prayer to get back on the road that his daddy walked and taught. Charles Stanley was a good teacher and I don't know where his son went wrong 😢. I didn't watch all of Charles' sermons though, so maybe Andy learned this from him and I just missed it?

I followed Andy Stanley for a long time. As a business man and an Elder at my church, a lot of what he said really resonated with me. This is about when he lost me and then the more recent comments on the alphabet stuff. You have to understand the OT in order to understand why these men reacted the way they did to a risen Christ. It wasn't just what they had seen but that what they had seen confirmed what they had known from the Hebrew scriptures. Genesis is my favorite book in the Bible. To understand so much of Christ's ministry, you need to understand the prologue. It is so disappointing to hear Christian leaders try to stand over the fault line (thank you Voddie Bauchem) and be loved by the world while being a Christian influencer at the same time. Thank you for the encouragement to stand firm on the Word of God. God Bless...Andy

There's a lot of Scriptures that are offensive to the world, but we don't get rid of them. If someone abandons the faith because of those Scriptures, then they were probably not truly in the faith to begin with. Jesus is a rock of offense to those who are of the world. The Church must stand firm and not water down the Word of Life, more so now than ever as the end draws closer! The world needs more of the Word, not less!

Secondly, many early Christian practices directly contradicted or conflicted with the ancient laws and practices in the Old Testament.

The most heart, breaking hard about Andy Stanley, to be a famous and successful pastor is when you realize it is God’s punishment on us. Because we have raised up for ourselves teachers to tell us what we want to hear, gods curses upon us, for he has given us what we have asked for.

What you mentioned in Minute 38 was my understanding of Andy Stanley's message. If I struggle with the creations story, or the way the men, women and children were obliterated in the OT (I don't struggle with these...just an example) then I can point to Jesus and say, "you're right...that's difficult...but Jesus believed it and I believe in Him and His resurrection, etc. so if He believed it, so do I..." My understanding is that the resurrection is what affirms everything in scripture...without the resurrection, we don't have anything...so, the resurrection is what we primarily ask a potential or new believer to focus on...and then as they mature in their faith, they come to better understand or accept (to they extent we can ever understand) everything else.
