Gene Hackman was a big name actor, close up there with Marlon Brando. His clout was such that he could make demands to movie studios. He agreed to play Lex Luthor, but he did it on the condition that he could keep his hair. Apparently he didn't like wearing skull caps. He ended up wearing one for the final scene of the movie, as well as for the prison scenes of Superman II. That's because he wound up really liking Richard Donner. Actually if Hackman had his way, he would have kept his mustache too. In fact early promotional pictures of Hackman as Lex showed him wearing a mustache.
However if I wasn't intimately acquainted with the production history of the first two Superman films, I'd say that Lex's hair was his way of breaking the rules. Lex isn't supposed to have hair, so naturally, this Lex had hair. Superman: The Movie remains my favorite movie of all time.

I loved Margot Kidder's version of Lois Lane, HOWEVER...she was about 8 years his senior here...and it shows. Remember he supposedly is older than her when he runs past the train she is travelling in when they were younger. Yet Kidder is much older than Reeve. Which is probably the reason Donner cut the Lois on the train scene out of the final movie version.

I agree it was different times and the audience is more diverse now in the sense a movie has to have global appeal to make money, but I wouldn't say more sophisticated. More cynical perhaps. And that was the problem with the most recent iteration. It worked for Batman but not this brighter concept as it stands.

This a masterful acting performance by a talented veteran actor, which works on every level; perfect pace, every physical move and subtle expression blending perfectly with clever lines of dialogue. It's perfect. The "God talked to Moses" line is brilliant. They tried to replicate this scene with some changes with another excellent actor playing Perry White, Frank Langella, in "Superman Returns", but it had no bite to it, was flat, did not do justice to the character....You had to love the great Jackie Cooper in this role. I liked him always as a performer, from his days as one of the earliest Little Rascals. Few actors transition from being childgood stars to adult stars. Cooper was one of them.

"And exactly how would you know that, Kent?" Surely, at some point, Perry must have thought about that, and wondered. In the comics, Commissioner Gordon told Batman that he didn't want to know his secret identity, and that he could have figured it out on his own if he'd wanted to. That led Batman to realize that Gordon WAS good enough of a detective to have figured it out, which led him to think that Perry White was too good of a reporter not to have figured out Superman's secret identity, and may have held back on revealing that he knew.
