"There's a strong streak of good in you, Superman. But then, nobody's perfect. Almost nobody."
"This is Lex Luthor. There's only thing alive with less that four legs can hear this frequency Superman... and that's you." Loved the fact that he had studied his foe and knew his powers when he made this call.
Thank Lois Lane for that, lol
Great villain scene. 👌
Lex was badass. I love the scene in the second movie when he lights up a cigar, puts his feet on the table, and tells the super villains he'll give them all the goods on finding Superman if they give him Australia.
That's not 100% true. It's possible that some infants who just learned how to walk days prior might also faintly hear the noises. Plus all the kangaroos and wallabies in the Metropolis Zoo be like.
Man of Steel had a cool scene, too.
This scene is a masterpiece. The buildup to Superman meeting his archenemies Lex Luther was pure cinematic genius.
Gene Hackman is THE best Lex Luthor we've ever seen.

@@spkanava1978, actually
I love the humility bit. It’s hilarious. It shows that Clark has a sense of humor.
2:55 I always took that tracking shot for granted: seeing the Daily Planet office floor from the outside, then Clark hops off the window sill. That must’ve been one hell of a movie set.
Great point
I had no idea that the entire Daily Planet office and the outside windows (made to look exactly like the Daily News building) was built on the Pinewood Studios lot. The outside scenery looks so real on film. Absolutely mind blowing craftsmanship. Film geniuses.
1977
This was one of the most perfect movies ever made. It flows seemlessly from one scene to the next.
It is perfect I love it but...but if I could remove one thing...CAN YOU READ MY MIND 🙄
I love so much about this. Clark being polite still after the guys tell him to get out of the way, the seriousness of superman as Clark becomes the man of steel in Perry’s office, that John Williams score, the effects and also that incredible Gene Hackman voice-over.
All brilliant, and together ...sublime!!!

Emotional dynamite in this sequence. Movie history.
Goosebump worthy, are the combined superpowers of talents that went into this classic, from music, to acting, direction and editing,

The fly by at 3.49…. Still looks real now 45 years on! Incredible scene
Incredible, isn’t it?
Absolutely correct! Amazing!
3:49

That moment for me is the best in the entire film, gives chills man, that music growing means urgency and danger
@@AdrianoSnake yep truly epic something the snyder films seemed to blur the line between bad and good
@@AdrianoSnake John Williams again made among his best soundtrack for this movie
Yeah, this movie still kicks butt
This was cutting edge special effects for 1978. Especially his flyby at 3:49. I still remember sitting in the theater as a kid during this scene like "Wow.. That looked real". Imagine how great it would have been to have Reeve playing Superman today. He's still the one true Superman in my book and always will be
The movie's tagline was "You will believe a man can fly."
still looks real to me
Agreed. The only Superman.
Yes I agree especially when you compare this masterpiece to the awful pile of trash Superman 4 which was made in 1987, not bad a move made 9 years after but looked like it was released 50 years before this
As a kid I loved this scene and specifically the fly by you mention. Even now it’s still so authentic and looks real….
John William's score lifts this simple scene to a whole nother level.
I think this is his best theme. ALL are great, but there's something about this one that really makes the hair on the bad of your neck stand up. Indian Jones is a close second.
The best superhero movie score ever.
Incredible!
1977
"Only one thing alive with less than four legs than can hear this frequency, Superman."
God I've always loved this line. Shows how much of a genius Lex is. I like the reference to it too in Young Justice, "With Superman off-world, there's only one thing alive can hear this."
One of my favorite scenes from this great movie. I always loved how Reeve lowers his eyebrows at 2:26 when he hears Lex Luthor. And Hackman was incredible with making it so easy to hear his devious smile through the frequency. Great music as he gets set to go out the window, too.
A strong contender for best scene in the movie. It’s literally pitch perfect. The musical queues with Hackmans menacing, but hilarious voice over are just brilliant and the flying sequence from when he transforms into Superman to his graceful arc upwards immediately afterwards are, in my opinion, the best Superman flying effects ever put on screen. Those few seconds do literally look like a man flying….! Classic scene.
I agree. You can really see the distinction between Clark Kent and Superman in this scene and it shows what an amazing actor Christopher Reeve was.
@@rosemarywoodhouse4832
If you want the best example of that, have a look at the scene in Superman 2 in the hotel room after LL has jumped into the Niagra Falls to try and prove that Clark is Superman. The scene where Clark finally gives in and stops pretending. Reeve seems to literally change from Clark to Superman, all while still dressed as Clark. His posture, voice, demeanour, everything just changes as you’re watching the scene. It’s a stupendous bit of physical acting from Reeve.
I agree that this scene is perfect. But best effects? Obviously not. The flying looks fake which is of course no problem since the movie came out in 1978. Not that the effects matter that much. Man of Steel had great effects and still is by far not as good as this movie.
Elonif It does not look fake.
1977
The SFX for its time were fantastic….when I saw it in 1979 it was marketed “ you will Believe a man could fly” and I did..I am 67 now and I still believe…smile
Superman The Movie still catches my attention each time I watch it. Every time I watch this movie, it’s like me watching it for the very first time at age 5. This will always be the greatest Superman Movie of all time and it was done in the 70’s.
It's rated as the greatest superhero movie of all time my many elite Hollywood directors, including Christopher Nolan and Steven Spielberg.

One thing Dick Donner did well with this movie was pacing, and keeping the world close-knit but not too small. Case in point, this scene sets up the entire third act for the audience.
Lois interviewing the native American chief about the land fraud deal, her telling him Jimmy is shooting pics at Hoover, Perry reiterating that fact to Clark in the following scene, and the nuclear launch showing on the televisions when Kent stepped in the newsroom.
All of it was foreshadowing for what was going to go down, but it wasn't too obvious even after 1000 rewatches.
Top!
(Edit)
Oh, and that gradual upward soar he does from 3.30-3.37 to get to a proper scanning height was nothing short of majestic!
That Native American interview in the car scene was filmed in Church Rock, New Mexico. To this day that area is called, "Superman canyon by locals." #navajonation
I was surprised to find that fans had discovered the exact location and it had been honored as so.
Awesome. Thank you for sharing that!👍
Matthew Livingston that’s interesting.
How about that? I live in New Mexico and never heard about that. I'll have to pop over and check it out sometime! :D
That's cool.
Christopher Reeves was the one who invented superman push off when he flies. He said it made it look believable.
Do you mean the arm movements when he changes direction? If so, have you also noticed both Routh and Cavell copied them, I'm guessing as a tribute to Reeves?
Christopher Reeve was an accomplished glider pilot by the time he was filming this movie. He had an understanding of the mechanics/physics of atmospheric flight, and incorporated that into his performance.
*Reeve
Yes, Reeve. My mistake. I get Christopher Reeve mixed up with George Reeves. Plus, predictive text is killing me. Lol
@@mdteletom1288 I think they've done that way becausa it was a great addition to Superman's portrait on movies. The best way of showing flight.
Is it just me or there's anybody else who thinks this is one of the coolest scenes in the movie ? Especially Lex talking Superman through dogs ?
He doesn't talk to him through dogs. It's a high-pitched frequency that only Superman can hear (not humans). Dogs can hear it too.
Luther actually knew about his super- hearing& cleverly goaded him on a ultrahigh frequency to make him take action.i could be wrong, but Superman s super hearing has only been used 2 times in this film, but it was used great.
I love this scene! Capped off with ‘there’s a strong streak of good in your Superman….. but then nobody’s perfect’

This movie had, and still does, contain such human emotion too it. There’s no doubt that’s why it’s still considered the best superhero movie ever made. Christopher Reeve really brought such a gentle, sensitive side to both Clark Kent and Superman. He really is “Superman!”

2:40 onwards, that fucking music cue is so fantastic... The building sense of urgency. And Lex's confidence, such a fucking great scene.
J. Schwab exactly it was the perfect set up music and The S had to come out.
You nailed it! Letter perfect build-up.
Thats what always got me too that music cue....John Williams soundtrack was part of what makes it such a great movie, the soundtrack tells the story without you even realising it.
J. Schwab it almost has like a thriller genre vibe to it. Awesome soundscape. Back then movies weren't afraid to mix genre elements. Nowadays that's no longer quite the way it it.
J. Schwab the same music as when Lois jumps into Niagara Falls in S II. When you hear 2:40 begin, you know something is about to happen.
That music growing as he comes to the window is just epic. That's why these new super hero movies cannot compare to this one. That music inspires danger and at the same time is heroic, a sense of hope. Hope

What an imaginative idea for transforming into Superman. It is shot, scored, and edited so dynamically that its sheer joy blows away (for me, at least) any questions about whether anyone would see him do this, or about the relatively primitive effect used to create the transformation. They were really going for it, and it works beautifully.
Steven Watchorn They did it like the comics. He transforms like that.
Where did he put the clothes?
@@SimsMoyal Kryptonian nanotechnology on his suit would be a great retrospective explanation into how Clark Kent changes into Superman in the Christopher Reeve movies.
The same highly advanced nanotechnology (nanites) as seen with Tony Stark's "bleeding edge" suit in the Avengers: Infinity War.
When he changed Into Superman... he still had his Dress pants on....
Ice Fire 3:29 that’s what I noticed about that, when I was a kid.
I think that was done on purpose to show he isn't finished changing.
This is his secret super power to change clothes instantly into Superman outfit ;-) . Well...if a man can fly...everything is possible and nobody would be surprised at this moment in the movie XD

"The world doesn't make sense Kent you ought to know that by now."
It's wierd: this movie came out 20 years before I was born and I have never heard a line from a movie with a more wise line.
Richard Donner did a great job of highlighting how no one see's him as Clark, he jumps out the window in front of everybody! Yet as soon as he is Superman the world is in awe....
I love the almost salacious tone in Luthor's voice: "But a disaster, people in danger, people who need help..." He really enjoys causing the death of innocent people.
The only one Superman Christopher Reeve forever
And the best Clark Kent

@Joe Mckenzie True. But as an actor, Henry Cavill sh*ts all over Christopher Reeve.
We were watching this TV broadcast at home when it aired and at the time, I distinctly remember my dad sternly asking me. " You like this shit ?" I meekly said "yeah". What I should have said was "Well it was your generation that came up with it ! "

Love how clark kent is played in this movie, played to perfection by reeves.
I love this scene...the flying shots are really well done I think and hold up well.
This flying scene feels real. Today’s CGI cannot replicate it because Christopher Reeve could embody the character the way no one ever had before and have not done since.
I enjoy 😊 all the movies out now but when I was a 15 year old in 78. This movie 🎥 was and still in someways magic on the screen. For the first time we got to see a comic book come to life! Thanks to Christopher Reeve and all involved! Most of all the vision of Richard Donner made it a classic!
This movie has a kind of campy Lex Luthor. But here in this scene he truly come off as a scary nemesis.
Always thought Lex Luthor works best as a theatrical villain with a cunning mind, exactly what Gene Hackman did. I really didn't like Kevin Spacey's physical hitting Superman or that nonsense he had to sleep with old widows to make money.

TRUE Superman! To this day, whenever I hear a high-pitched car alarm going off somewhere, I always think of this scene, and often put a cup to my mouth and start quoting Lex's monologue!
Henry is the closest we know to the newest version of Superman. Reeve is the classic version of Kal-El in the most classic way.
Greatest icon ever.
I remember flipping through the channels as a 5 year old and when I saw 3:25 I was instantly hooked
The 3 hour version is really good. I'm glad it got released on Blu Ray. Richard Donner doesn't consider it the final version but I think it clarifies things quite well, especially with the twin rocket launch. I always thought Lex Luthor was just stopping the same rocket transport twice. I also thought the pacing was decent. Perhaps Lex Luthor's "babies" thing is a bit weird / weak but other than that the entire 3 hour version is superb.
Yeah, that bit could be a little confusing, but the trucks and missiles look different and there's different military personnel in each scene.

I saw this in the theater the day it was released. When it missed its summer release date, there were constant negative news articles about cost and that it might not ever be released, you know, newspapers write shit. Richard Donner was on the defensive, hinting there were no wires used for Superman flying, amping up expectations of Superman fans like me, who were mostly teens devoted to DC comics. Sitting in front of the big screen, this scene was impressive. Lex Luthor was absolutely brilliant, using high frequency sound to reel Superman in to his underground lair, he was far more malevolent and without fear than the comic character. And Superman dropping off the ledge and sweeping into that massive curve of a flyby past buildings and buses, it really looked like no wires.
It's a good thing that Clark didn't get either fired or suspended from his job at the Daily Planet when he had to leave Perry White's office during their conversation while Perry's back was turned on Clark because of Lex Luthor sending out a frequency to contact Superman to invite him to his hideout for a chat.
It was hard to read that all in a row without breathing
