    Really love the fact that you show drills, sometimes the issue isn't knowing a skill it's not knowing how to start developing it

      Yeah I second this, should release a course (would be happy to pay) of like a training regimen with drills in order to improve. Would defs help with consistency.

      100%
      I met some people through the Tekken Reddit that ended up becoming lowkey my coaches and whenever I was struggling with something they'd have me run drills
      it's one thing to know you have to punish things, but it's a whole 'nother thing to actually get used to doing it
      they had me set up Kazuya to do a bunch of different things and rotate between which were active so I could get used to reacting to common moves and knowing which string to punish them
      It was apparently extremely effective training because I now usually ultra instinct block helicopters on reaction lol
      Definitely pick one or two characters you struggle with, find their common moves, and find which punishes to use
      as a general rule, especially as a beginner just stick to a basic 10f punish, 15f launcher, crouching 11f, and crouching launcher. The game will throw all kinds of different specific strings like 12f's and 13f's, but you can get by just fine by using only the basics.
      Sorry to ramble there, I was just kinda excited to talk about the topic lol

      @@NyxDiscordia33Nothing to appologize for, took me 4 weeks to finally figure out how to practice. In SF6 i have prerecorded actions on almost every character to run drills, but in T8 i had no idea of how to set up drills.

    A neat little tip to make it more obvious if you hit the whiff punish or not (useful for stage 1 especially): When you're recording your opponents move, hold back for a short moment after doing the move. That way the recording will actually block if your whiff punish comes out late, giving you better feedback than the little yellow "punish" in the bottom left.

    • @Ennbeard
      @Ennbeard 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      I feel this is the BIG benefit to using the record function over selecting df2 / df4 from the movelist.
      It can also let you turn off the move properties boxes if you want, which as Phi has said in past videos, makes it as close to a real match visually as possible.

    • @NemSumeragi
      @NemSumeragi 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Doesn't neutral on the stick make them block too? Or does that not make you block on whiff

    • @Toonfish_
      @Toonfish_ 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      @@NemSumeragiNeutral block doesn't work if your character is in an animation, so if you want to make sure you're blocking as quickly as possible, always hold back.

      I think for level one, sure but like Phidx did, he said try not to record extra movements so it won't affect the timing. Especially level 3 when the interval is short. The back button will give more time and backdash on level 3. I think seeing the punish is good enough tho

    You’re actually the goat at teaching Tekken. I’ve played fighting games on and off since I was a kid (I’m 30 rn) and this is the first time I feel like I have enough linear growth and recourses to stick with a game long term. I’m still pretty bad but I feel constant growth with your help. Thanks

    I LOVE these drill videos !
    Level 5 : add a mid-high string that reaches far enough, like Azucena's f+44, that you have to duck and punish
    Level 6 : some options can come with an initial forward dash, for exemple record all Jun's options like level 4, but add another one : forward dash df+2. That way you train not to press your whiff punisher every time she does df+2, you have to whiff punish it or block punish it depending on the situation.

    Awesome guide. I like these practice methods and you talking about muscle memory and how people learn it from taking breaks and when you're not playing. So it means I don't get too frustrated and keep a more positive approach when learning. I've saw myself improving on a daily basis. Is there a guide for learning how to react to block low and punishing lows or how to train yourself to get into the rhythm of doing both? It's one issue where I struggle and I'm looking for a guide like that.

    For some reason doing the first 2 levels of the drill for a while helped me break some mental block with *throw breaks* of all things. I've still been struggling to actually properly whiff punish or look for whiff punishes in actual matches, but something about the drill helped me with looking at my opponent more in a way that's translated to getting more throw breaks (which I was so bad at that I had a D rating in the skill on the player stats before today)

    You can also record a full real frame trap situation that allows backdash with tight timing. Jin, Hwoarang plus on block mid string for example and then their usual followups and try to make those whiff. Or the Dragunov stance mid kick + df1 for example. Backdash between them and whiff punish.

    Can you do a vid about mental traps/bad habits? I.e. constantly low guarding because you THINK they're going to do a low, or constant flowcharting, constant highs. It's probably more a high-level play video tbh. It's difficult for people to see things like that in their own gameplay.

    I tried it and had to do an intermediate level between 4 and 5 with only df2 and df4. Just responding to both of those things properly seems overwhelming. Dash df3 on top is just too much for now. But I'll do it again for sure. Hope I'll get better in time. Looks like my mental stack capacity is around zero right now.
    Whiff punishment is something I struggle with greatly as it is, but I also happened to choose a Mishima as my main, so I have to do it with the electric or at least a wgf. And my ewgf is pretty slow, as you can imagine, so I have to react quicker to do the input in time and not screw it up.

    You cooked on this one a great way to practice electrics also some characters have better whiff punishments like Lee have some levels easier.

    I'm new to Tekken and I got in the habit of mashing back instead of holding it to block while stunned. I think that is causing gaps in my defense. I think that if you mash it, you risk the chance of block not being activated once your character is able to block again.
