If your grout is cracked means you have loose tiles. Go ahead and regroup it but you are wasting your time and money cause it will crack again I promise you that. I only been a tile setter for 28years but I do know What I’m talking about.

I used a ketchup container with a small hole and it stayed in the grooves. I watered down the simple fix so a thin coating would go over what I had. Had no missing or old grout. Thank you, thank you!!!

I really hate to say this but I watched this video 2 years ago and repaired the missing and damaged grout of my kitchen floor following this guy's method. I dug out all the cracked grout that I could and really roughed up the remaining grout lines. I applied the correct grout to fill the holes and top coat the remaining. In the intervening time, it has failed MISERABLY. Half of it came up while simply vacuuming or sweeping the floor. I spent half the day today scraping the remaining "repairs" off. Not fun. I'll continue on and do it the right way by removing ALL the grout and filling with new. So while this method seems quick and easy, please do not bother. It cost me hours and hours of time both to apply it and then to remove it 2 years later. Note that I am not a stranger to home repairs. This house is the 3rd one I've remodeled. I'm 70 years old and fabulous at DIY.

I did the same job in my bathroom. The tiles are 2” square so there are A LOT of grout lines, but I didn’t want to put new grout over the old stuff so I ground out all of the old grout with a Ryobi multi tool and a bunch of cheap grout removal blades from Amazon. It took me a solid week, it’s a bear of a job NGL. I used Laticrete Spectralock 1 grout, which is over $100 for a pail. Not cheap but it doesn’t need to be sealed and zero maintenance after installation which is worth the cost IMO. 18 months later it still looks like the day I installed it.

You could have used single component grout that’s supposed to be stain proof after it cures. The single use grout had an elastomeric property similar to quality exterior paint but much thicker. I will admit that applying it worked me over as I was redoing my kitchen/dining, entryway, and 3 baths and I demoed out all of the grout with an oscillation tool. My builders grout was the original sand based grout and I live in Las Vegas and naturally they didn’t backbutter any on my 20x20 tiles or made sure that the grout was hydrated correctly, monitored for dehydration while applying and maintained for long future use. A year after I purchased the place there were still small bits showing up and sticking to my feet. After researching the shit out of tile work, I decided to jump in and take it on. When I was a contractor working homes in the 90s I had a few friends that did this so I’ve been around it more than most folks. The one issue that pushed me forward to even consider doing this fix was I had counted a total qty of 23 loose tiles where the contractors thin set had failed. After pulling a few of them I was able to conclude that it was just shoddy half assed work where the thin set was maybe 50-60% installed right. Their thin set troweling tool was the wrong spacing for that size of tile and on top of that there was a lack of thin set across tiles as well. Piss poor foundation gives what it sounds like. When I finished it was such a relief, but my ass was dragging at times. The finished product looked even better than I planned because my old grout color was one of the colors they didn’t have readymade and I was willing to move over a couple shades for me to be comforted that the grout wasn’t going to crumble again. During my first open house my realtor told me that half of the viewers asked what was my tile grout secret. I wanted to take this as a win and lie and explain that I’m scrubbing floors when I’m not at the office. I instead just explained that the old grout was tired so I replaced it all. I mentioned that the new grout was elastic, which I have to believe will last 3X longer than any original sand grout. Good luck!

Your affiliate link for the grout you used ("alabaster" color) is now pulling up a thin-set mortar from the same company. Amazon seems to have the white color but alabaster isn't coming up now. so the grout you referred to can be placed directly on a clean grout/floor without having to rough up the old grout to make sure it adheres to the old grout? I have good grout and tile but I need to raise the grout so that my floor is more level and hopefully my sewing machine rolling chairs won't get caught in the grout ridges...that is the goal...

Some pre-mixed grout can be bit more elastic and so easier to disturb days, weeks, months after installation. And it usually costs 10-30 percent more. Very thin grout lines with rectified tile a whole 'nother challenge.

Sorry for the delay in replying...been super busy as of late! It's a good question...I'm not sure how well that would work for you...I think it could be tedious to get clean lines because not only do you have to put it on, you have to carefully clean the edges. If you had the time and patience it could work, but my gut feeling is that it could be frustrating for you. Best of luck if you decide to do it. If you do try it and it works, please feel free to let me know how it went...thanks!

Question for anyone- do you need to remove grout that only has a crack? Or can you just fill those small areas then do a refresh? We also have some sections that also need to be fully removed but we don’t want to do more than necessary.

Question: the tile that's been in the house for the last 50 the grout doesn't crack or chip off ever.. HOWEVER someone install some tike in my house last year and it's cracking already. The floor got wet and it really cracking down. Why is 50 years old grout not cracking at all and 1 year old grout cracking fast?

I love how you mention several times how much you hate the grid look - whilst wearing a check shirt

So, I have dirty saltillo tile on my kitchen floor with yellow grout. 🤦‍♀️ After stripping and cleaning the tile, can I use this to change the color of the grout, and would this stain my stripped tile? Any thoughts are appreciated. TIA 😊

The grout I put on my first coat went beyond where it was needed, and I haven't been able to "pick it off" with my fingernail. I guess I didn't go over fast enough and the excess had hardened. Can you recommend a way to remove the excess? Thanks.

A brand called aqua mix makes several different kinds of cleaner, the one I bought today is called grout release though I haven’t used it yet or started my grout repair. They also have a haze remover for the white cloudy stuff that gets on your tile after grouting. I bought mine at Home Depot and it cost between $10 to $15 depending. Hope this helps 😊

Question for the sealer part can you use one of the sprayers? Or do you need to run it in?

Quick question. Did you remove the old grout with a scraper before you added the new grout color on top?

Thanks Joe...I can't believe I didn't remember to do that, lol! I had that picture, too...in fact that's what I used on the thumbnail. EDIT: I did put what I was thinking in there, but not at the end!...check out the 3:46 mark, there's 2 pics back to back that show 2 areas where I did some lines and not others and I took those pictures at the time because of pretty strong contrast. But I definitely should have a summary picture at the end like you suggested. This video was one I did after the fact, future videos I'll film it as I'm doing it, like with the countertop and mailbox.
