How To Clean Grout Between Professional Cleanings

  • You've probably wondered why your grout gets so dirty, that's why you're here. So I made this video to show you why your grout gets dirty and what you can do to keep it clean. Spoiler: you're probably going to have to call a professional unless you want to spend your weekend on your hands and knees (which could be a fun weekend 😉.)
    FAQ's About This Video:
What is that machine he is using?
It is a Hydramaster Maxx470 truck-mounted extractor. The part that you see in the video is a Hydroforce Gekko with the hard surface attachment.
How do you feel about the Bissel Crosswave and other home extractors?
I made a video about the Bissell Crosswave: • Bissell Crosswave Revi...
Couldn't I just paint or stain the grout a dark color so it doesn't look dirty?
Of course you can but that won't prevent your grout from being dirty. It will still be dirty but you won't be able to see that's it's dirty so you won't be reminded to clean it. And that's so much grosser than just cleaning your floor regularly.

I can only compare to my experience with bathroom tile grouting (shower cubicle tiles, not bathroom floor tiles).
I use strong bleach ...apply liberally using paint brush THEN leave for two hours.
As it dries the bleach literally kills or eats the black bacteria & dirt accrued till grout is pristine again (just like new).
I especially do the bath sealant exactly sane with bleach. Turns up like new...and my bathroom sealant is 15years old.
I used to hate cleaning now this magic bullet really allows me to clean to a professional standard.
I appreciate the video says do not use extreme pH cleaner but bleach works especially if you wash it off after 2hrs of application.
      Respect the video content...very informative.

I'm an independent house cleaner. You can seal it yourself, (or have the other maintenance staff do it) there are sprays out there now that make it super easy.
However, it's utterly pointless if there is mold in the grout. No matter how clean you get the outside facing grout; there is still gonna be mold growing inside of it and it will just come right back out in days.
So, seal away on all the non wet areas to make your job easier and DO NOT use a brush on them when you clean them afterwards. (Because you'll just scrape off the sealer).
The wet areas well... just ugh.

Measure the pH of your hot water (let it cool for the strip first)...and you'll realize it was also horsecrap. Use a cleaner that binds dirt well and don't buy the cheapest dish soap type, the good stuff from a reputable household brand isn't a lot more expensive most of the time. PH...leave that up to the manufacturer, just test the results instead.

Sealer needs to be reapplied every 12 - 18 months or more often if your not cleaning with a pH neutral cleaner. Also, sealer doesn’t prevent your grout from getting dirty, it prevents it from staining and makes it easier to clean when the time comes to deep clean.

I have issues with out engineered wood floors. Only in cleaning. We moved to high desert inland California in retirement. Many kinds of dust here. Volcanic red. volcanic white. Sand. Rocks. I have to shop vac to get dust and rocks. Swiffer as not all fine dust up. I use cut up auto static cloths. Then mop with micro rag or cut up towels. Can’t use a lot of water. Use spray bottle mostly water. Few drops dawn and pine sol. It’s never clean. I could mop ten times in a row and still get massive dirt. But tile bathroom is same. Even if I swiffered in morning, I could get same black swiffer a few hours later. We have pine loft roof. I sometimes wonder if it’s decaying constantly. I wondered if the flooring was magnetizing the dust. I dont mind the work but I can’t do the 3 times over 2000 sq feet age 65 every day and still have dirt? If something worked Id do it more often. So I ignore. But this video gives me ideas. And about to gut and redo bathroom.

Applause ! You done good. I can tell you are a genuine pro. The only exception I would add here is that it is OK to mop your tile with a good alkaline cleaner if your grout is not sealed. How do you know if the grout has been sealed? Well if you have to ask, then you know that it has not been sealed. An alkaline cleaner will keep the tile cleaner longer but will have no effect on the grout as you have well illustrated. PH Neutral cleaner is only used if the grout has a sealer on it. That is because alkaline or acid based cleaners will damage the sealer. Well done video.

As someone who owns a janitorial supply store, you are right on. The one tip you missed was to read the dilution rate for your cleaner. I have to make sure I tell some of my customers to not put more cleaner in because your floor is extra dirty. I tell them they may have to go over it a second time. because you will leave a film on the floor which will become a dirt magnet. And rinse with plain water is always a good option. And never mop a waxed floor with hot water.

I did as suggested vacuuming very well first, then using Bona Cleaner (letting it sit for 15-20 minutes), then scrubbing, and wiping with several clean rags with lightly wet, very hot water. My bathroom is tiled with VERY small tiles and grout lines. I think it did an overall good job, but think it will need a steamer/extractor to clean very well. Which steamer/extractor do you recommend for home use, that is somewhat economical?

Great video. One thing I did not hear you cover is the common problem of black mildew... especially in bathrooms and sinks. Once this takes root it is near impossible to clean. The problem being that the grout absorbs things like hair conditioner... and these stay there and essentially rot
Sealer can help if applied to fresh grout. But a better prevention is to use Epoxy Grout in all new installations. This grout will never absorb water, and also resists degradation by acid cleaners

Yeap, I'm a pro house cleaner; once mold gets into grout, the battle lost and the grout has to be totally replaced. IF you don't do it soon enough, the mold gets behind the tiles and well... the whole thing should be ripped out and redone.
Tis why you're supposed to reseal every 6 months with a lot of sealants...which no one does.

For years, I kept thinking that I could “solve” the mildew problem if I just cleaned it correctly. A corollary problem is that people are unaware that hair conditioner is such great food for mildew in showers.

I use my Bissell floor machine about 1 month($125.00 Amazon) and it works UNBELIEVABLY well. No mop wringing, fast dry floors, no bending. I even use it on the the vinyl "wood" flooring. Make sure to seal your grout when it's clean which u should reapply about 2-3 years. My bathroom tile is white with white grout. Looks as good as the day it was installed. Plus, can use natural products in the Bissel (except vinegar) so no chemicals.

@@ohboy2592 OMG I screwed up. It's a Hover, the basic model. I keep waiting for it to die so I can get the upgraded model which lets u control the vacuum. I do have the Bissell Green Machine which we use for the cars and upholstery. Anyway, both are great. I've had the Hover for 3 yrs. We also have a Eufy auto vacuum which we run every day. Once a week I use the swifter to pick up the spills and dog, um "accidents". We have a Pom, nuf said! Seriously, I can't tell you how many times I have used the Hover and loaned it out. Many times over the investment. But I'm guessing that just about any floor cleaner will do as long as it sucks the water off the floor. They're all pretty good. Hope this helps. Again, you MUST seal the grout at the beginning, or at least after ur first good cleaning, and then again reseal about every 2-3 years depending on traffic.

    • @veessayin2878
      @veessayin2878 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I also looked at reviews for floor machines. But I can tell you that they all work basically the same. I think most ppl don't read the full directions. "they leak" but they don't! You must understand how they work. Of course there is water on the brushes, of course the tank fills and u must empty it and wash out the machine after using. I keep it in the garage, so it "leaks" a bit after cleaning. That's the water that leaks from the brushes. Take care of ur equipment and it will take care of you.

  • @vanguy9780
    @vanguy9780 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Great video. I've been doing tile and grout for over 25 years. Most of your advice is excellent. However, mopping with a good alkaline cleaner and a High quality loop end blended or rayon mop will clean a tile and grout floor better. Mix according to the container sugestions. Do not add too much cleaner. That will only make your floor sticky. A sticky floor ATTRACTS dirt. The key as you mention is to vacuum first. Then while mopping, rinse and wring your mop often. Do not try to mop a large area before rinsing your mop or you just spread around the dirt. A Good loop end mop will get into some of the grout and provide a small amount of cleaning there, whereas a flat will never touch the grout. Never use a a flat mop of any kind on a grouted floor. It just squeegees off the dirt onto the grout.
Using a neutral cleaning solution will NEVER EVER keep the tile clean. It is in fact possible to keep the tile clean. It is only surface dirt. You need a high quality alkaline mop solution to remove the soil from the tile. Don't worry about hurting the sealer since most will not last more than a year if floors are mopped at least weekly as they should be.. And of course at your next professional deep cleaning the sealer will need to be re-applied anyway..
There is no way for a homeowner to keep the grout clean. Over time the grout will get dirty, that's just a reality with a grouted floor. It does not matter which color grout you use on your floor because after a couple of years ALL grout becomes the same color. That's right, after a few years your grout will be black or dark brown, so for a change, be smart and put in dark brown, gray, or black grout in the beginning and nobody will ever know how dirty your grout is.
