Would love to see you do an episode on the R360 gyroscope arcade cabinet. Read an article that was published two days ago about one being unearth in cornfield and it seems like good material for an SLX video.
@@HOWLWOLF You just provided me with a valuable bit of information that I was previously unaware of; I purchased the majority of the Sega Genesis and Mega Drive collection with an amazon code on sale quite a while back for less than five dollars and then bought the final set of ten for like 7.50. I've always wanted to be able to add the top and even middle-tier shoot em ups that I value so much as part of the "gameography" and now I was able to acquire those and then some sleeper hits out of the other genres. Kind of fun to page through all of that and see what comes up since I'm greatly familiar with all of the games from that era. Thank You Sir!
If I were made Sega's new boss, one of my first courses of action would be a Golden Axe Collection: the arcade and Mega Drive versions of the first game, the arcade only sequel, both Mega Drive sequels, the Master System and Game Gear spinoffs and... was The Duel originally an arcade title or a Saturn exclusive? Either way, that'd be on there too! In the late 2000s, I had my own idea for a 4th Streets of Rage game: Streets of Rage: The Big Riot! Gameplay largely being the same as before but with tweaks and in 3D! It'd also have had the Master System versions of Streets of Rage 1 & 2 as unlockables, as consoles of that generation had the Mega Drive versions downloadable to the Wii and in a compilation for the PS3 and 360!
@@adultmoshifan87 If I remember correctly, The Duel was also arcade title first, based on the ST-V board hence the quick port to the Saturn. I loved that game on my Saturn, I wish they would bring it back.
Personally I think its worth it for the version of outrun alone. I grabbed a disc only copy of it for about 8 bucks, and have already gotten my money's worth out of outrun, fantasy zone, and alien syndrome. I think if something like the 2500 series came out these days the reception would be a lot more favorable, as evidenced by the slough of retro cash-ins on something like the switch e-shop.
It's not terrible, but if I wanted a modern Outrun I'd play the much superior Xbox Outrun game. And if I want nostalgia, and a great Outrun version, I'd play the Saturn port. This version is just weirdly pointless.
@@wyterabitt2149 Fair, but Outrun 2 on Xbox is going for around 30 bucks, and the saturn version is definitely more expensive than that. Hell, even 2006 coast 2 coast is more expensive than this collection usually goes for, and you get all the other games as well, for what it's worth. I wouldn't say that's pointless.
It's good to see a review of a PS2 game for a change. Would be great to see more Sega content from the 2000s era and beyond, even though I love the 90s era by far. Back when Sega was glorious!
You're the first person I've seen give a fair shake to the Alien Syndrome remake. I love that one. It's a blast co-op, and as you said, adding twin stick control really elevates the experience. My friends and I had a blast with that one. I was all in on the 2500 releases, and really played the heck out of a few of them like Alien Syndrome, Bonanza Bros, Gain Ground, the Monster World Collection, and especially the SDI/Quartet release. So many people don't realize you can do 4 players on Quartet if you have a multi-tap plugged in, and it is an absolute riot. Even these early releases had a few winners. Heck, I played this version of Bonanza Bros with my mom when it came out in my 20s more than I ever played the Genesis version. Thanks for always being objective on this stuff!
Wow, good to see this collection again. I bought this on release and my only gripe was we would never get Phantasy Star and Phantasy Star 2 2500 editions. I must say if you have ever enjoyed the small Monaco GT cabinet game the one on this collection is pretty cool, but it's charm is lost to time. Too many crashes. I got this collection from Blockbuster for $19, traded in a few old games and walked away with it for $10. Definitely worth that just for Outrun and Alien Syndrome. Wish SEGA had published the series worldwide. There were so many great games I would love to try. The 3ds Sega Ages are all excellent. More please! It's about time for a new compilation!
Wow I never knew the compilation was poorly received. It was my favourite game on the PS2 lol. Had so many fun co op experiences with Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and the Bonanza Bros.. Also space harrier was fun too
There's something about Sega Lord X's content that can catch my attention, keep it, and leave me feeling like I was there to experience the topic. I was barely playing NES and as a child when the ps2 was new 😂.
Check out Saitama Saisyu Heiki, he did the album for this game. He's done a lot of official OSTs and also a lot of covers and remixes that are really impressive (granted he also has a lot of demo work that's unpolished, but there's some amazing stuff among that too)
These were made by a company called D3 Publisher. The very same guys who worked on the Simple 2000 series which Earth Defense Force originated from. In Japan, they were intentionally budget games which is why the series is called Sega Ages 2500 which meant the games cost 2500 Yen; or $25. Taking that into consideration, you can see why they had to restrict how much time and effort went into each of these games. With that said, I think this is the best Alien Syndrome iteration to date.
I remember buying this back when it came out and it barely ever left my PS2 for the longest time. I remember playing Golden Axe, Alien Syndrome, Space Harrier, and Outrun constantly
Ah the same old sad story for Sega post Genesis times, mistakes after mistakes, mismanagement, and poor choices. It's almost like they had a monkey with a blind fold on throw darts at a wall to make choices sometimes especially with game releases(especially in the US)
Man oh man! Your content is sooo good. At the heart of the pendemic maybe six months ago, I felt like I was in need for a new hobby in order to have mindless worryless fun and preserve my mental stability by the same occasion. I thought about those classic NES & SNES Nintendo brought out, not aware at the time of those production issues and their overall rarity. It's around those times I discovered your channel. I remember one particular bit of yours about console fandom in relation to our personal background and it really struck me; growing up in a little village in the Q like 8 hours away from Montreal, Sega products were nowhere to be found. I guess it made sense for the very few retailers and rental centers we had to focus on the main brand. Heck, of all my hockey teammates, ONE had a Genesis. We all had Nintendos. Now, see, I played video games as a kid, but not much more than the average. I loved a good Ninja Turtles or Power Rangers beat 'em up with friends, but was mostly a sports guy. Getting older, all I player between the WWF No Mercy rage in 2000 and 2020 was NHL, FIFA and an occasional Guitar Hero gig. So, useless to say, you taught me a whole lot! I went back and did my homework. After considering the actual Mini Gen, I wanted to buy a machine that would open up options if I ever wanted to, so I bought a super slim PS3 with NHL Legacy but more important, with Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. For 11 Canadian bocks...what! A. Deal! I've already spent well over a hundred hours and counting on this awesome bouquet of classics I had no idea they even exister before finding tour channel. So yeah, thanks man! So far, I've beaten the entire Sonic quadrilogy as well as the Streets of Rage trilogy, Shinobi 3, Golden Axe 2, Decap Attack (people often talk about Ristar and Dynamite Headdy, which are great, but Decap Attack, guys!), Altered Beast and Space Harrier Arcade and a few others. Those compilations may have their flaws, but they are a super way for a gaming ignorant like I was to get a good grasp on either a company or, one might say, a certain era of the medium. I'm done, now.
I agree with you wholeheartedly about this collection. As for Columns, I'll stick with the Genesis version. YES! I agree that Golden Axe was a broken mess.
I think they forgot they were on a smaller budget when they tried making Golden Axe. The other games looked fine when they went after cheaper, more stylized graphics.
Virtua Racing on PS2 = WOW 😍 (that's one I missed playing on that system) I wonder what joypads people use on the PlayStations? I always hated the original pads that came with the consoles.
Loving my Genesis Mega Collection on the PS3 to this day. Phantasy Star 4 for basically .89¢? Yeah, I'll take that. (Bought the collection used for $11.99)
You should also do a review/video of the Sega Classics Collection for PS3. Now THAT was probably the best Sega compilation game they've ever done. Or was it Sonic Classics? Was something like that. It had a TON of old Sega games on it.
Monaco is a weird addition, not sure why Sega included that, which needed to be made in 3D, over something like Daytona which, while already in 3D, was also far more popular. I think what this should have been were arcade-perfect ports. Considering most of these games hadn't been seen in ages, a lot of the home ports we got at the time weren't arcade perfect (though they were certainly still fun). That way you don't need to do a 3D remake of art assets.
(11:00) That theme in OutRun is in Sonia and Silver: The S Factor, a hack based on Sonic 1 for the Sega Genesis. I absolutely love it because of the torquise feel of rhythm! I love the collection, no matter what happened with the changes as long as they were for the greater good, even though Sony got major troubles with party members during the PS2 times, especially the Capcom 5.
This is a great review! I liked some of the game choices here and others not so much. I think sega was just unsure of what their audience wanted so they just grabbed what sold decent and went with the wind smh
Ok here's my take and I already know I'm gonna get some flak for it.... 1. Alien Syndrome- I agree with everything you said, but why did you forget to mention the 2 player ability? It's a great part of it. 2. Columns- It's Columns...... 3. Fantasy Zone- It's a great version I must say. 4. Golden Axe- I've never understood the hate for this version. I really enjoy this version a lot and the 2 player makes it a ton of fun. 5. Monaco GP- Definitely agree that this one is unnecessary in this compilation. 6. Outrun- I like this one a lot. It's a great way to play Outrun with a different look to it. 7. Space Harrier- I've never been good at Space Harrier, but this one I feel is decent. 8. Tant R/Bonanza Bros.- I don't mind these two, but do wonder why they made it on this game. 9. Virtua Racing- I love this version, it's a wonderful way to play V.R. Keep the Videos coming SLX!
I wonder if in some cases, it's just a feeling with the slowness. Like in Golden Axe or Space Harrier.. is the action ACTUALLY slower? Or is it just a perception? I'm not saying you're wrong at all, feel is everything... but now I'm curious.
I have this collection x, as i started collecting for the ps2 again last year when my girlfriend gave me her slim. I personally love it, granted its not perfect, but i think the 3d remakes are very well done. I was disappointed by golden axe, and columns, but the rest i like
I remember buying this game from gamestop like 2007, the games and UI looked great ! I beat several genesis classics like sonic 1 and 2, vectorman, and shinobi 3. 😍
Fantasy Zone adds newer stages if you buy them in the shop in the menu of the game, but it just means you are forced to go through those stages as well which annoyed me. I enjoyed Columns despite it not changing much. I got it at £5 and don't regret it as it has some good remakes on there but half of them were poor choices. Wish they put Phantasy Star on there
I would love to see more of the Sega Ages line-up for the Switch, but with more capable 90s arcade games! It would also be nice if they could branch these ports out beyond the Switch and onto other platforms, if they can.
One of the only games I ever bought, sold, and then bought again. I bought it used, was disgusted by several of these games (especially Golden Axe), so I sold it. Then I started getting really into Virtua Racing, going back and forth between the 32x and Saturn versions, realized that I no longer had the best (at the time) version of that game, so I bought it used. BTW, not sure if anyone noticed, but the Switch version got an update last week which allows the severely over-ramped gamma to be turned down. During the attract, hold down on the L button and press down on the d-pad until your car changes from that weird neon-pink color to the classic cherry red we all know and love from the arcade game and you're good to go.
There were actually 21 titles localized for the Western market, released by the Playstation magazine UK i have the disc. It also had 4 ports on it from the Sega Saturn, There's a rom of it floating around on the web as well.
I was always so sour we never got the Phantasy Star remakes. At the time the only available versions on a contemporary console were the Sega Smash Pack Phantasy Star II with its mangled sound emulation and the somewhat compromised GBA collection. Meanwhile the Ages line included all sorts of stuff including the Japan-only Seganet text adventures.
I have this one; it's a decent mix of remakes, some better than others but for the ten dollars that I bought it for a good value, and I don't mind the different takes on some of the games since the originals were well worn territory. Would have loved to see a volume 2 with the Panzer Dragoon installment included as well as several others.
Rumor also has it that after volume 15, later games in the Sega Ages 2500 series on PS2 saw an increase in quality because they were handled by M2. That would have been the right movement should Sega had decided it from the get go, IMHO. Have a good one, Sega Lord X!
What a coincidence! I spent all of thisThursday grabbing all of the ps2 Sega Ages 2500 games to put on my PS3(Rebug) collection (dynamite deka and Fist of the North Star but knew I should grab all of them as I love Sega games) PS: Phantasy Star Generations One and Two exist out there in EnglishTranslation by fans*
Thanks, I have the disc and played it when it first came out and gave up after 'space harrier' and 'golden axe'. I've been thinking of pulling out the old console to replay a few things. Checking out 'Alien Syndrome' sounds like the first...the two other biggies are the two 'capcom arcade' discs, to see if I need to invest in their new updates for the switch.
I own a PAL copy and I still like it despite the omission of Alien Syndrome, the refresh rate of all games being stuck at 50Hz (but they seem more or less speed adjusted), and the dreaded black bars (except V.R. where they somehow adapted the resolution). it's an uneven cheap job, but the disc is cheap as well these days so I'm not complaining too much. But it would be of course better to import a NTSC copy or some of the Japanese originals.
I almost forgot I owned this. I prefer 32X VR over PS2 VR Flatout. I had fun with the Outrun game and Alien Syndrome. The bargain 3D visuals and so-so playability kills almost all of the entries for me. Thanks for the show!
Golden Axe also oddly uses sounds from the Duel game, Tyris has Milan's voice for instance rather than creating new ones (or at least using appropriate old ones).
Funny, I think this Golden Axe is better than the original in every way. People have a way overrated memory of the original Golden Axe, at least the Genesis one. OutRun and Space Harrier are also far better, this is where the 3D gives the perspective that 2D never could
Awesome presentation of these SEGA classics for ps2. Perhaps a suggestion for the next episode should be SEGA Games for the PC. That would be great. Thank you and keep it up!
I wish someday a fan-made mod of this collection could be released that would fix some of the problems like a re-balancing of Golden Axe and a Ferrari Testarossa Spider for Outrun.
So cool you reviewed this! I remember buying it on the PS2 brand new back in the day thinking it was just a simple Sega comp (I really should have observed the package better) and was pretty disappointed when I got home. That GOLDEN AXE remake is atrocious! LOL!
The music you pointed out fir Space Harrier is a remix of the opening credit jingle for an old BBC scifi series called Blakes 7 I think. Thats a great show if you don't mind the REALLY dated special effects.
i honestly loved space harrier and outrun , space harrier had a nice use of color while i loved the car in outrun for personal reasons, since it looks like some japanese cars i love with a thicc trunk , so that might be a bit subjective , other than that, i kept wondering why no altered beast was there, but then they made a whole reboot that i loved a lot... so SLX , please , how about u review some sega games on ps 2 ? like the altered beast reboot, i honestly loved that one....
Another great video/topic brought to light by SegaLord-X! It rly blows my mind that they had such collections in Japan and they never released them in EU/NA or they released the shitty ones and they kept the good ones to themselves rly makes me wonder how much more we could have taken out of the consoles we own and how greater the overall experience we had with them would ve been..sad rly!

Would love to see a new Golden Axe game. Something like SOR4 would be great
I’m still salty North America didn’t receive the SEGA AGES 2500 series of releases on PS2.
Me too
"Til this DAY! ...... Til dis DAYE!"
I honestly liked this one, Alien Syndrome was so much fun, and Bonanza Bros is my jam
"Watching the once mighty Gilius Thunderhead waddle around the screen slow as molasses is depressing."
I have to admit I burst out laughing at this.
I have the collection and have always loved it. Quite surprising seeing that reviewers back in the day hated it so much.
Many of these remakes are rough!
I wonder if in some cases, it's just a feeling with the slowness. Like in Golden Axe or Space Harrier.. is the action ACTUALLY slower? Or is it just a perception? I'm not saying you're wrong at all, feel is everything... but now I'm curious.
This actually has my favorite version of Monaco GP - something satisfyingly simple about it.
I have this collection x, as i started collecting for the ps2 again last year when my girlfriend gave me her slim. I personally love it, granted its not perfect, but i think the 3d remakes are very well done. I was disappointed by golden axe, and columns, but the rest i like
Im still frustrated that I had the PAL version which removed Alien Syndrome because SEGA wanted to avoid a higher age rating.
Alien syndrome was the best. I loved that collection actually.
I remember buying this game from gamestop like 2007, the games and UI looked great ! I beat several genesis classics like sonic 1 and 2, vectorman, and shinobi 3. 😍
can't believe I didn't know about this game until now do more videos on Sega PS2 games pls
Wish they put Phantasy Star on there
the games in this PS2 compilation are still good to me
I would love to see more of the Sega Ages line-up for the Switch, but with more capable 90s arcade games!
It also had 4 ports on it from the Sega Saturn,
There's a rom of it floating around on the web as well.
If you could link us to it, that would be awesome!
If only the dreamcast had a DVD player, maybe they could had a chance. Yet they couldn't afford to put one in
They could but they chose internet instead
@@magicjohnson3121 no they couldn't. The modem was like 50€ dvd player alone was 500 € in 1998
Love my Sega Classic Collection! That Alien Syndrome is my favor way to play the game. So love to pop it in once in awhile
I was always so sour we never got the Phantasy Star remakes. At the time the only available versions on a contemporary console were the Sega Smash Pack Phantasy Star II with its mangled sound emulation and the somewhat compromised GBA collection. Meanwhile the Ages line included all sorts of stuff including the Japan-only Seganet text adventures.
i played this when i was young i didn’t even know wtf it was i just liked how many games were in it
Great work
I have this one; it's a decent mix of remakes, some better than others but for the ten dollars that I bought it for a good value, and I don't mind the different takes on some of the games since the originals were well worn territory.
I spent all of thisThursday grabbing all of the ps2 Sega Ages 2500 games to put on my PS3(Rebug) collection (dynamite deka and Fist of the North Star but knew I should grab all of them as I love Sega games)
PS: Phantasy Star Generations One and Two exist out there in EnglishTranslation by fans*
can you do a video on the remakes of phantasy star 1 and 2
Thanks, I have the disc and played it when it first came out and gave up after 'space harrier' and 'golden axe'.
"The car looks like ass" - And this is how I know it is a good review. :D
Wow, I have never seen this. I kind of want to play it.
Am I hearing the Gain Ground theme at the begining?
The Sega Ages 2500 version, yes.
I want this solely for that awesome Virtua Racing translation... I wish Virtua Fighter 2 has made it on the US disc, too...
Some of my favorite games and reason why I love the ps2. All the Sega games. Lol
Posting before watching. This is one of my favorite PS2 discs. I’m hoping you are going to defend it against the haters. At least a little.
I played the hell out of Outrun and Virtua Racing on this back in the day.
I wish someday a fan-made mod of this collection could be released that would fix some of the problems like a re-balancing of Golden Axe and a Ferrari Testarossa Spider for Outrun.
I'd like to imagine all of the budget went into the killer soundtrack
So cool you reviewed this! I remember buying it on the PS2 brand new back in the day thinking it was just a simple Sega comp (I really should have observed the package better) and was pretty disappointed when I got home. That GOLDEN AXE remake is atrocious! LOL!
I love this collection. I know it got some negative reviews but I had a lot of fun with it.
Never heard about this one but it sure looks like it belongs on the ps1.
Wish they redid the 2d ones SOR4 style... Or even just more colours and animation in the original style.
Just hearing that music from the remaster of Space Harrier made me think of Game Sack. Joe must have used that track at some point!
Alien syndrome looks killer! I want a copy
