- An early season kayak jump shoot for wood ducks is something I've wanted to try during the Virginia October duck season for a couple years and we finally got the chance to make it happen this year! Drew and I hit a stretch of river we had floated for geese during September in the hopes of being able to sneak on a few woodies and catch a few fish on the way down too. The float didn't go exactly to plan but we still had a blast and learned a lot about this style of hunting while it's still warm out. Hope you enjoy!

Muscadine grapes. Most well known in NC we use them to make wine here and I personally recommend making a reduction sauce for your duck or venison with some if you get the opportunity. Enjoyed the video!

. Well I finally found it again! On that note I don’t understand everyone’s at version two shooting hens. Most species are abundant these days. Particularly Wood ducks. Follow your states harvesting guidelines. All I like to see is a fair Chase. No water Swating. Grew up duckhunting in the 1980s. Bird numbers were low. At the time new steel shot regulations made knocking down and killing a bird very challenging. We never killed birds on the water. Except cripples. Duck hunting was still an art. We made our own decoys. Made our own boats. Trained our own dogs. Are camouflage was WWII army surplus. Cold weather clothing was bulky wool or useless cotton. Sport has changed to an industry. Not to say the new hunters are not artist. Many of you are and bring a lot to the industry. I enjoy watching you hunt. Look forward to more episodes. Thank you!
Thanks for the thoughtful comment Don! I absolutely agree with you about duck hunting being an art, although I think we have a little different perspectives on water swatting. I hope to get into making more of the gear I hunt over here in the next couple years since I'd like to have a personal connection to my decoys, calls, boats, and such!

Want to do the exact same thing with my kayak up here in Ontario.
I was hunting on around Nov 5th this year up around Ottawa. We went for mallards thinking they would be into their migration. To our surprise the woodies had not left the area yet. I have shot only one wood duck in November here prior to that weekend. My friend and I got 17 in two days of hunting. We don't have a limit on woodies here either. Six birds in total is the limit and they can be all woodies too. There are restrictions on other species and limits though;

Mr. Thomas I tied a piece of Para Cord to my Paddle so I can just drop it in the water . That way I don`t have to take my time laying it quietly down on the Yak .
That's a good idea Chuck! I typically have an elastic lease connected to mine but I broke it last season and haven't ordered a new one yet

I don’t hunt, but it’s good to see someone picking up their shells!! They are littered everywhere some of the spots I used to fish it’s crazy, hunters are supposed to be acting like you, conservation is key.
Yessir I've seen some spots that hunters and fisherman have trashed around here and I want to do everything I can to keep the areas I frequent looking natural

It's was a pretty good early season considering some of the low water levels we are dealing with in areas we typically hunt! We'll get that setup soon! I'm sure you'd see a lot of stuff down here that y'all dont get up there
@@HokeOutdoors My dad, uncle and I do leases down there for deer sometimes (hunted pittsylvania cty area before) but would love to go back! Saw a shoveler up here for the first time ever which was nuts!

In France the anti hunters are suppressing everything To prohibit our hunts. Little by little we are losing everything. This year we lose 2 type of hunt.

The wild grapes, that is where you should put your dekes there and sit down little way on the riverbank. Be careful and on the boat. Wear life jacket.
I think we may try that for next October if we can locate some during September! They were quite plentiful in a couple spots

Great video Thomas. I have a scenario question, on this hunt if you have hooked into a 5lbs small mouth, a flock of pintails get up one with four 12” long sprigs on it fly to you. Do you drop the rod and potentially loose that big ole smally and shoot at that stud sprig or do you let them go and fight the fish?
Thanks James! That's a good one, I'd honestly let them go, hoping Drew would shoot one and just fight the fish. I was blessed to take a couple pintails in Texas last season but I haven't put my hands on a 5 lb smallie in quite a few years

If your going to wear your waders on a kayak like that make sure to wear a life jacket! You can sink like a brick! Not sure if maybe it’s very shallow but be careful. Wack’ em and stack’ em!
It is a very shallow river and pretty flat water through most sections which is why I left the life vest off. Later in the season once the water gets cold I'll keep it on for the whole float

@@HokeOutdoors in the cascade mountains lots of timber flows into on of the big lake Wenatchee floated it a little didn't see much other then some merserg that were young normally don't see to many ducks up in that area till it gets colder

Hey Thomas where can I find information on hunting the rivers in Virginia? I live in NOVA and I’ve got 2 rivers nearby but I’m not sure if I’m allowed to hunt the Potomac or Shenandoah rivers. Found some conflicting information and don’t want have the cops called on me lol
The Potomac is weird because of the way it's split between MD and VA, best to call the GW and inquire about specific stretches before you float them. The Shenandoah should good as long as you're not in city limits where you're floating

Hey I have a question I might be going to float the river in a creek boat with my dad this next season in nc so is it hard to stay balanced or is it not that bad?
It definitely takes some practice but once you get the hang of it then it's easy. I would definitely go out during the summer to practice shooting shooting out of your boat

You ever consider setting up on birds instead of jump shooting every video
Yep, we actually tried that for the geese this season. Unfortunately these river birds don't fly much and often hangout a long ways from the launch so it would be quite difficult to make the trek downriver in the dark to setup. We will try it again sometime this season I'm sure though, I'd rather decoy birds than jump shoot them but I'm not gonna die in a rapid just to do it
