I used to work part time for a friend's store in the French Quarter. A few doors down was Central Grocery. Every day I grabbed a Barqs Root beer or Cream Soda with a muffaletta. Sitting on the stoop , people watching while eating a Muffaletta was the best as the roving brass bands play jazz is an experience I will never forget. I never got tired of ít. It's a great sandwich and getting it from the place that created it is the best. They should be reopening it soon. I know I can get it from a few places. I prefer the whole experience of going into Central Grocery..This video definitely made me hungry and happy. Great memories
That's awesome and good to hear. I'm happy to hear that this video brings back good memories. Yes, Central grocery should be opening back up soon. Time will tell that's for sure. Thanks for sharing!!

My mama been going to central grocery for 40 years. I went to get her a muffuletta right before the pandemic 2020, the day I went back to San Francisco. That was the last thing she ask for before New Orleans locked down, and I had to leave to go back the San Francisco. Remember when this sandwich whole was $8.72 1972, 2020 it is $22.50.
Good day Charlie!! Taiwana is from BR and never had a muffaletta. I lived in NOLA for 8 years and tried it once...didn't like it. Now we want to try it on our channel! Great recipe bro!
Charlie, this is a great video. The history of the muffuletta is interesting. I've eaten the muffuletta at Central Grocery many times. I think it's the best sandwich in town. I buy the olive salad and just eat it out of the jar. Maybe you could do history for other foods, like BBQ shrimp.
Thanks so much! I ate a small amount of the olive salad out of the jar! I actually have a recipe video on Barbecue shrimp. It's been so long since I watched that one. I'm not sure if I mentioned anything about the history of it.
Good looking sandwich. I haven’t had one probably since before hurricane Ida. Used to love the muffuletta at Village Inn on Jefferson Hwy. They make the sandwich put it in the pizza oven heat it up, toasts the bread and and melts the cheese then add the olive salad after its heated. They’re great. If they ever reopen check it out. The only olive salad I’ve ever had that was better than Central Grocery was home made by a friend.
I will have to make this sandwich someday myself homemade of course. Wow, that's cool. I've never heard of Village Inn. Interesting. Thanks so much for sharing my fellow New Orleans native!!
Hey Charlie, Love your channel. My grandmother (momma as we called her) grew up in Oppalouess. My mother had a troubled childhood. Hello Teresa! Happy to hear that you enjoy my channel and that you are learning somethings you lost. That is awesome. Thanks for sharing your story my fellow Louisiana native!
Thank you so much for this video! I think the sandwich looks great! That hole inside the bread worked out well to put the olive salad. And you really did a great job at making it! I'll be making this beautiful sandwich in the near future for lunches. Thank you again! Take care and be safe! Bon Appetit! 😊💖🙏
Hi Charlie this looks fantastic. I eat sandwich with ham and cheese with lettuce and red onions. Thank you for this amazing sandwiches. Happy Thursday. ☺😉😊😀😃😄
I made this last weekend. Found the Central Grocery olive salad at my grocery! So excited. I drain the olive salad just so I can chop the larger pieces. Then I use the reserved oil to brush my bread. And yes, I toast my bread too! It reminded me of home!
Charlie Andrews I used all the same ingredients and made a cold pasta muffuletta pasta. Used penne pasta, and cut the meat and block cheeses into cube size. Came out great. No dressing needed. Olive salad oil was enough.
I remember seeing this on a sandwich show that aired on PBS. The Central Grocery was featured. It was love at first sight. I don't even like olives and had to have it. LoL. I ordered to have it shipped to me. It was delicious. I really just want to order the bread. It's pretty good.

I used your recipe to assemble my muffuletta. I can’t find the bread here in Georgia so I made my own Muffaletta loaf and ordered the olive salad. My husband had been asking for a muffaletta during this quarrantine and that’s not an easy thing to find in Georgia so I used a bread recipe online and your assembly. I love it with a tapenade using black olives, capers and garlic and olive. But I'll eat this yummy sandwich anyway I can get it LOL 😋I love it when it wrapped and weighted down for days.
My first time tasting a muffalatta was in the early 70s. There was an Italian grocery near the corner of Tulane and Jeff Davis. I was hooked on that sandwich from then on. Chef Charlie I like my breads toasted too but I think I would rather that one not toasted 😄. I think you did great!
Awwww shit! It's on now. I am in California and ordered 2 of these from Central Grocery through the mail a couple of months ago (before the mail got jacked up). They were perfect but EXPENSIVE. Maybe again next year.
No way!!!!!!! My first time in N.O. 2 years ago and tried this delicious sandwich at the deli. Waited some minutes well worth it. Charlie, you're soooo cool, subbed and hooked.
This summer I've been eating a lot of sandwiches or quick and simple meals. Your New Orleans Muffuletta Sandwich looks easy and delicious. I make my own Giardiniera (Italian pickled vegetables) so I would sub that for the Olive Salad. I might have to find a recipe for the bread. I haven't had Mortadella (type of Italian cold cut) in a long time. Thanks Charlie
The olive salad is just giardiniera with olives and artichokes (don't know if chokes are standard in giardiniera). I've made it before and it was delish!
