This is what old people used to listen to when I was a kid and I'm really old. They used to sit around tables in "Social Clubs" drinking Cherry B, Babycham and Mackesons stout, dreaming of reaching the sophisticated heights celebrities like Shirley oozed from every pore. If you want a male version check out Burke Shelley from Budgie, the track "Parents" highlights his inner Shirley. From the same area of the same town as Shirley and when he wants to, sings just like her.

Is there a better female singer? In 1998 in a winery garden near Adelaide, South Australia, 4,000 people were baking one 42 degree Centigrade (108F) late afternoon waiting for Shirley; when she came out in a white dress in welcomed light rain, 4,000 people gasped, it was so loud, and she was just stunning...mouths dropped in awe..she must have been dripping from rain and but you wouldn't have known. Today's stars fade in her shadow.

Well that was unexpected! Growing up in the UK in the seventies, Shirley Bassey was the epitome of light entertainment and a staple on the Saturday night variety shows that my parents watched. She had that unique way of waving her arms as she sang to express emotion too. But you're right, she could certainly sing! I guess it's hard to look at her music without a sense of irony because of that light entertainment tag, but it's a style akin to the legendary Burt Bacharach so definitely worth re-appraising.
She sang more Bond theme songs than any other artist, so I always expect those John Barry strings to break through at any moment - they certainly would have fitted perfectly on this track.
By the way it's pronounced Bass as in sea bass, rather than the plural of Bay, if that makes sense?
Shirley had a great sense of humour too - if you can find it, watch the video of her singing 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' on the Morecambe and Wise comedy show in the seventies. She manages to exude class and style even while Morecambe and Wise (playing hapless janitors) cause chaos all around her!

Thank you for playing this. My Mum was a singer in the 70's and 80's and she has a voice like Shirley so sang a lot of her songs.
I remember as a child watching and listening as my Mum practiced her singing around the house.
This was one of my favourite songs. Shirley sings it with such ease - like butter - melting... such an amazing woman.
My Mum still sings, and like Shirley, her voice is still so strong even in her 80's.

What fun to see you finding Dame Shirley, ( Bassey like sassy rather than base ee). She's had a phenomenal career having top 40 albums in 7 decades now and kept her voice throughout. Have a look at her at Glastonbury when she was 70 or just check out some more stuff that you find and that powerhouse of a voice will probably wow you. Oh yes, and she did a song with Yello, ( Swiss electronica band), called The Rhythm Divine which is worth a listen.

Dame Diana Rigg as the only Bond wife, and Telly Savalas as Blofeld, what's not to like? It even has Joanna Lumley as a Bond girl. It's much better than some later Bond movies.

I've always had a soft spot for Dame Shirley, she's much more famous in Britain (she is from Wales the land of song). The song was originally from 'Love Story' a famous film from 1970 with Ryan O'Neal and Ali McGraw. Shirley guested on the Propellerheads single 'History Repeating' which has a great video too, I highly recommend it. Your reaction has warmed my heart JP!

What a lovely surprise to my ordinary day. This song is from the 1970 film of the same name. When I was a kid growing up in the 70s this type of dramatic orchestration of cover songs would play in the cinema before the film started. It brought back those happy memories and my favourite Bond film is Casino Royale. But Diamonds are forever is a cracking song !

I used to be a Francis Lay fan. He composed a lot of very characteristic scores, often filled with a feeling of nostalgia and tenderness. Especially for romantic and soft-prOn movies like Bilitis and Emmanuelle II, and was a big part of why these movies became big hits.

Wandering through your archive, this was a delight to find and one of the reasons I really like your channel because you’re not afraid to stick your toe in different waters. • @Johnnywr
    @Johnnywr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Bassey rhymes with classy😉
Shirley Bassey used to have a TV show in the mid 70s in the UK. I was a wee kid at the time but found her fascinating as she was a very animated, powerful singer with flaying arms and sharp sudden movements. Her face would animate and augment each songs delivery. She was quite hypnotic; even to an 8 year old kid watching on the TV. Also, as you noticed in your review, the musicianship, and particularly the rhythm section on her early 70s albums, was immaculate, and often times (for want of a better word)... groovy.
So I guess I've always had a soft spot for Shirley Bassey, and particularly this early 70s period.
Also, if you get a chance, Justin, there's a comedic Shirley Bassey appearance in a 70s UK comedy show called The Morecambe And Wise Show. It's very funny.

This is easily one of the most touching and powerful movie songs ever written, and if u haven't seen the movie which title song this is, "Love Story", u definately should. This song is Right there with "Les Parapluies de Cherbourg" which is also from a movie that carries the same name. I really think u would appreciate Nana Mouskouri's version of it. I highly recommend u to see both movies as they are beautiful pearls of cinematic history with amazingly beautiful theme songs.

I never expected this. I don't like James Bond, I don't like this song, or the film it comes from, but I do have a sneaking regard for Shirley Bassey. She's unusually restrained on this. I think to be fully appreciated she has to be seen as well as heard for the visual drama she brings to her performances. Others have mentioned her performance as Glastonbury, definitely worth a look, as is History Repeating with Propellerheads. Also her appearance with Morecambe and Wise shows that while appearing the epitome of a diva, she isn't without a sense of humour.

I thought you might like her. We used to have Shirley Bassey over and over again on the 8 track, going on holiday to the coast. Mom was a big fan. (Mom hated the Beatles, because they didn't "sing properly", too. :-) - "It's just shouting." ) Anyway, it was always fantastic. (Whenever we started fighting or trying to see if we could hang out of the windows like Spiderman, etc, it would be time to Sing again, unless it was time to listen to one of the tapes again.)
I can't remember my favourite James Bond movie. It would have to be with Sean Connery. If you want to watch a great Sean Connery movie (also featuring Michael Caine) look for *The Man Who Would Be King* . It's a Rudyard Kipling story about two British Army deserters/ desperados, who head to Afghanistan in search of a treasure, and end up ... in a bit of trouble ... I don't want to give too much of the plot away.

Every time I heard Shirley Bassey I think--"Brian, the babe they called Brian." (Yes, I know it's not here, but it's a dead ringer.)

You’ll love to react to these live performances by Shirley: “Never, Never, Never; “For All We Know; “With One Look;” and her cover for The Doors’ classic: “Light My Fire.”
Just google and they pop up on You Tube.

I did it again. Typed up my comment then changed screens before posting it.
Legendary, smooth, powerful, sweet and just the tiniest bit of edge. A beautiful woman with an amazing voice. I always think of Goldfinger when I think of her.
I had read all the Bond books by the time I was 12 but I only watched seven of the movies. The Casino Royale remake captured the brutality of the books best with From Russia With Love covering the sense of adventure in a relatively realistic manner. The Moore movies left me cold and the less said about Niven's movie the better.

Sean Connery was Bond for me, Goldfinger - with Shirley Bassey on her first Bond theme song - Honour Blackman as Pussy Galore (didn't Austin Powers have fun with that name), and that Aston Martin with all the gadgets, fantastic. The theme tune to Live and let die, was brilliant, but the movie not so much. The Daniel Craig era movies would be my next favourite era, Casino Royale is great, and not as silly as the Woody Allen, David Niven, Peter Sellers jaunt from 1967, although that does have a great soundtrack.

A nice song from a very corny movie. Don't bother watching "Love Story", it's sappy and cliched. I think "From Russia With Love" is my favorite Bond movie. I grew up watching them and it was just assumed that you would go out to see the new one as soon as it was released. The best theme Bond theme song was from "Live and Let Die", also a very good Bond movie.

Mate… do yourself a favour. Take 2 hours out of your day and pick any Bassey songs to fill that time . Pour some JD on ice sip and enjoy.
These artist come along once in a lifetime ( remember that). Don’t take that voice for granted… it’s special.

I'm gonna recommend Dionne Warwick. "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" is a favorite.
Also Tom Jones' "It's Not Unusual" is good from this period...

As some have already said, those of us of a certain age view performers like this as cheesy light entertainment and - whisper it softly - ‘a bit too Vegas’. But in the 90’s there was a new appreciation of artists like Bassey, Jack Jones, Sinatra, Scott Walker, Brel and in particular the skilled and lush orchestrations that came along with them. Class is class! If you want to hear a fine example of how this type of music inspired modern music of the 90’s seek out Simon Warner’s album.
