Honestly, the greatest Sin in this movie is the representation of Blu and Jewel‘s relationship. In the first movie they came together as a couple by realizing that they both cared for one another and were willing to sacrifice part of what they loved to be together and find something better. The first movie ended with Blu moving into the jungle to make Jewel happy while Jewel stayed in Rio so that they could still live close enough to a city so Blu could still see Linda.
My point is that the last movie ended with the clear idea that Blu and Jewel cared about each other and their relationship was built on the foundation of mutual cooperation and attention so that they formed an equal partnership and were both happy with the life they chose for themselves.
But in the second movie they act like A) they still live like humans instead of living in the jungle; B) Blu is the soul foundation of the relationship’s stability given that he is the only one actively trying to keep everyone happy; and C) that Jewel is now a selfish wife who either doesn’t realize that she’s hurting Blu or she doesn’t care. Seriously, the first movie ended with them both happy, yet in the second Jewel is completely okay with letting Blu get tortured by her father, upstaged by the guy her father is clearly trying to set her up with, and taking him away from everything he has ever cared about or loved just to satisfy her desire to live more wild.
The greatest problem is that they forgot how to write Jewel for this movie, because in Rio 2 she just completely takes advantage of her family. She says that the kids love being wild, but we never see a direct comparison to their kids lives at home vs here. The argument could be made that the kids prefer the jungle, or that they preferred Rio. Either way, there isn’t enough on screen evidence to support that the kids like it better in the Amazon or in Rio. Also, Jewel is completely taking advantage of the fact that Blu is willing to do anything to make Jewel happy, even if it’s making him miserable.
The point is that in the first movie Jewel was not this selfish. Relationships are built on mutual trust, effort, and understanding. One way effort relationships are not healthy and there is no way Jewel from the first movie would ever let this happen.
But for real. The GREATEST Sin in this movie is that it is called “Rio 2” and yet it hardly spends any time in “Rio.”
Exactly and the fact that she allows her father to treat him like dog shit even though he is the sole reason why she actually returned back to her family and her colony is just awful. Like if I was in that situation and I lost my daughter and then the sole reason she came back was because of her partner damn I do literally anything to make that person happy or to give back to them. It’s so awful

And the biggest problem is that they could have done literally anything else with this movie. Just the other day, I sat down with a friend and we talked about at least five different ideas that kept the original plot of this movie in tact, but made it so much more enjoyable by giving the characters better traits that built on their arcs from the first movie, gave better reasons for why they have conflict, and gave better understanding to those who should have been written better in the film.
There are a ton of ways that they could have written these characters that would have made the movie better. Their biggest crime is that they didn’t put in the time and attention necessary to make Jewel an evolved version of her Rio 1 movie character.
I completely agree! Every word you said was accurate. I like the first film a lot, but I can barely even watch Rio 2. My real problems are: A) Like you said, barely any of the film actually happens in Rio. And Linda keeps moving around the world according to what her bird does, apparently! B) There being a massive flock of other Blue Macaws that were believed to be extinct is a clichéd, unrealistic and uninteresting plot point C) Bringing Nigel back as the villain just felt lazy. He really didn't effect the plot and he was 20 times more annoying than he was in the first movie. Oh, and the scenes with musical numbers between Nigel and the female frog who is in love with him are the most unwatchable parts. D) Is Jewel completely blind?! Even if you have just reunited with your long-lost family, I can't express enough how bad it is that Jewel wasn't far from cheating on Blu with her childhood friend Roberto, and she didn't notice or at least care at all about her father treating her husband like crap. Jewel and the kids were drifting away from Blu, he's in an unfamiliar place, he was being bullied by the other birds, and Linda and Tulio are too busy to spend time with him. Blu was all alone and Jewel did nothing. It's disgusting.

I really hate how every makaw treats blu like crap all because he’s new to the colony, even his children are given the easy way in the colony’s acceptance.
I think only Mimi was the only exception to not treat him like crap and I really would've wished to see what some of the other macaws besides the main ones we get to see really thought of Blu.

I feel like in reality in the second movie, Jewel actually doesn’t give a shit about Blu whatsoever and just abandons her kids anyway just to be with her family. Also, the “Maybe you should start thinking about what YOU want, and less selfish” or whatever she said is just pointless. Jewel is obviously wrong it that situation because in reality her children, AND husband all are comfortable with city life. I don’t know why Jewel would even try to get out in the jungle just because everyone else is out there. I’m seeing alot of other comments about what she had said and tbh i think i speak for everyone when i say if i was a bird and i saw that happen to Blu i would’ve gone up and said something. Now since Jewels family came it basically ruined everything for Blu and the love him and Jewel used to have.
Basically i just summed up the whole “Jewel’s a dick” plot.

Anyway I watched the film back when I was still a kid, and the second movie always feel like it somehow ruined the first one. I mean I shipped Blue and Jewel! But the poorly (?) portraiting of her character just... dissapointed me. Now grown up, to rethink of Rio 2, it's easy to see how mismatched they are.

His is more of a North American context where indoor ant invasions are more easily controlled and aren’t year-round due to smaller windows for colonies to establish and expand.

rghmf I have. Lived in housing in the woods on both East coast and West coast. Relatively modern renovated houses are largely sealed for heat/cold conservation purposes. Pest control is also available. Hardly ever need to call them though.

THE WHOLE PLOT IN ONE SENTENCE
This movie was fine, but there are 3 things that bother me about it
1. The fact that they retconned the Blue Macaws to NOT being endangered, thus destroying the entire purpose of their adventure in the first movie
2. The scene where that one cute little prairie dog was eaten, and having the leopard sing with its voice, that wasn't funny, that was horrific! I mean yeah the prairie dog gets regurgitated out later, but come on!
3. Eduardo is the exact kind of character I would NOT want to see as the disappointed father-in-law! And yet they made him be that. I mean I understand he gave Blu a fair chance, but if the movie was smart, it wouldn't even make him support that cliche in the first place!

I enjoyed the first Rio decently but to be honest I didn’t even know that a sequel even existed until this was uploaded.
My daughter was nuts over the first one, and did a bunch of research on Spix Macaws as a result(quite the bird expert now, actually). But neither of us knew about the sequel either.

As someone who DOES like the RIo franchise i definitely agree with 9:40, i feel like they had plot ideas for like 3 more movies but couldn't pad them out feature length so they just shoved them all into this one movie and it comes across as VERY overcrowded with too many stories going on at once lol

But yes, US does try to use more energetic personnel for domestic channels, with sometimes impassioned back and forth between presenters and field reporters. Still, some of its highest paid non-comedy channel hosts do maintain a more international level of professionalism that is somewhat restrained.

They not only made Jewel selfish towards Blue, but remember how in the first movie they clobbered us over the head with how important it was to bring Blue and Jewel together because they were supposedly the only blue macaws left on earth? Well, in this sequel they basically gave us the finger and said:”Sike!” on that. Wich makes the first movie a bit useless.

Personally, I think that if people were to cross breed Spix's macaws, they would have chosen Hyacinth, Lear's, and maybe Hann's and blue throated macaws to breed due to somewhat similar coloration and sizes.

In all fairness, that was a pretty good film writing-wise, and it stayed pretty true to its source. Other than a load of brony jokes, it wouldn't really be all the entertaining to sin, and CinemaSins doesn't come off as the kind of person who would in any way enjoy sinning a mlp film

Some of it being a backtrack from the first movie's reasoning, a cliched meet the in-laws story thats far cry from the last better one, dependence on gags and tropes, the creepy pairing between Nigel and that poison-frog and one of the worst deus ex machinas of an animated climax.
Personally, I liked it when I first saw it. So I wont say its as absolutely bad, just poorly executed.

You know, it’s weird how just the topic of “death” suddenly gets the “dark” connotation slapped to it.
Even as a child, I viewed death as a perfectly normal thing, even more when it involves the natural world, and always considered “dark” to involve actual emotional stakes that render a death as a possible blow to the narrative, where it’s meaningful to us as much as it ties to the character arcs. A rando barebones criminal getting eaten offscreen hardly has any stakes to it.
The Disney Mighty Joe Young from my childhood for instance, had an almost identical character but had more stakes because he literally murdered the main characters’ parents as part of the prologue and was a main driver of the plot. Now that, can be considered dark. Or the gruesome violence in the live action Jungle Book with adult Mowgli. Heck, the Andy Serkis one too.
This is just looney toons slapstick in comparison.
I mean The Lion Kind had one guy murder his brother. Death in kids movies should be treated as something serious obviously and fit the context. Obviously it also depends on what age group it's aimed towards.
saminpixels There you go. Practically all the classic and golden age Disney movies had such content. And those movies were for universal audiences, so age group didn’t matter. Most folk I know, watched those films as toddlers, and barely consider them “dark” just because someone says they are. “Murder” is wrong, yes, but death itself is more contextual.
The deaths in the Tarzan intro for example. Even though they paint the Leopard as a villain, it’s just a leopard, and leopards gotta eat. Sure, they exaggerate it and make it go to lengths no normal leopard would, cuz I guess they wanted to suggest it had a grudge against humans, but it’s still just a normal thing. Him killing the leopard was actually handled tactfully too. It wasn’t a “I killed a monster” thing. It was a humbling scene. In later parts of the franchise, once he’s far more skilful at fighting, he tries to avoid killing predators because he respects the ecosystem.
The point is to address these matters and make sense of them instead of shying away or trivialising them too much. You mention Lion King; we linger in that scene, and the impact of Mufasa’s death is shared by Simba and the audience. Or take Mulan, when they get to the destroyed city with the doll. It’s a massacre, and we marinate in the somber reality of war, which contrasted with how the characters had been idealising up until this point. That’s how you use death meaningfully to convey life lessons. It’s not a dark fantasy that’s primarily trying to evoke shock value via brutality.

Did anyone else notice when he show the slowed shot of the TV having soccer 3:30 the daughter bird was literally IN the process of changing the channel therefore making his joke about it interrupting the match invalid? It was still dumb movie coincidence that it turned to the RIGHT channel but I accept no mistakes from this channel that makes jokes all the time!
I'm gonna be honest... Nigel was the only reason this movie did not completely fail. Everything else could have been fine if Jewel was not changed to be such an ignorant _bird_

As a Brazilian I volunteer to contribute with this video by saying that most of the movie doesn't come close to what Brazil really is, this birds are extint, the red ones are almost extint, the snake is a Gibóia not an anaconda, they have ridiculous soccer cliche, the people who cuts trees ARE violent and they will have guns (it so bad that the army and the police had to join forces to go against them), they didn't show one single native in the entire movie that goes on Amazônia (notice that Amazônia is not only the name of a forest but also the name of a state) and I could go on and on but nothing is going to change
I guess Scarlet and Green-Winged Macaws are endangered in Brazil? Also originally there was supposed to be a scene where a native Amazonian tribe appeared to Linda and Tulio (alongside Fernando who was originally supposed to be with them) to show them the way where the Spix Macaws were (Kinda makes Eduardo's remark about there's no humans in the Amazon pretty ironic, but unsure if he seemingly doesn't know that Amazonian tribes exist in the rainforest he resides in) , but no idea why it got cut.
