Glad you ended up reviewing this! I was on the fence, but I'll stick with my Schiit Magni Unity. Could be an even better option for most people b/c it's $189 with the included DAC and AC power adapter. It also has a little more power than the Gunnr, so more headroom for more products.

The Gunnr is an interesting product and the ability to operate totally portable off just USB power makes it nice for those on the go but with the additional wall wart more powerful than something like the HEL. I do think they regressed a bit from the HEL by eliminating the microphone gain control knob off this unit and should have retained that function. As far as the soundstage/presence other reviewers have also stated that minor tweaks, not big adjustments in the knob was the secret and this was even on more gaming oriented headphones like the Drop PC38X. As a fan and owner of multiple Schiit products for now I will keep using my HEL as a gaming DAC but if I needed a replacement or additional unit I would not hesitate to buy the Gunnr.

Great vid, Fresh! I just wanted to let you know that I bought your Arete on Amazon and after 3 weeks of use, I'm really happy with them (they're my first pair of IEMs). I wanted to ask you about two things: 1. Do you think it's worth upgrading to or replacing them with XENNS Tea Pro? I'm asking because I read that you use both and I'm curious if would be worth it, especially since I value inmersion in games (mostly single-player and FPS as Tarkov) and I enjoy listening to a variety of music genres. 2. As for eartips, I've been using the AZLA SednaEarfit MAX ASMR since you recommended them to others, but unfortunately, I ordered a size too small and my replacement is currently stuck in customs. Do you have any alternative suggestions? I know it's subjective to personal preference but since I'm new to this, I'd really appreciate your input. I've tried the Spinfit W1 and TANGZU Tang Sancai. The W1 didn't quite work for me but the Sancai were honestly pretty fine. Thanks so much for your time reading this, and keep up the awesome work 😄
@@atsun I ultimately stuck with the Arete mainly over the tea pro. I like clarity over mid bass. Both about as good in game. I like azla sednaearfit lights / and asmr max.
One of the three best reviewers at TH-cam! Love his vids! One question… can you make a video about which settings one should use at his AMP/DAC especially how much bit and kHz? I‘m using a topping dx3pro+ at the moment and i am really struggling which is the best…

I also have a Magni Unity , love it, but now using JDS Labs Atom II Dac / Amp Stack it has a more neutral /cleaner sound with massive power for any headphone. Guess I'll skip Gunnr.
Curious on why you think the Gunnr is better than the Arc Mk2? You talking purely sound quality or just the price? I've been running a modded pair of HD560S with a custom cable + GproX IcePop mic input to my Mk2 and it has been flawless. Paired with an xq50 Pro BT receiver I can listen to volume controlled music from my phone and mix it into whatever game or even mix the BT stream into my mic in discord with the optical out to a USB converter. All of the inputs and outputs basically act like an interface. I also have the icepop EQ'd with APO to sound like a higher end desk mic. All with one wire going to my face. Not to mention the 10 year warranty with A+ customer service. So I'm wondering if I should consider upgrading to the Gunnr if it's genuinely better..
Great vid man! Little off topic but if your limited by price would it be better to go Xenns top with apple dongle or something a little cheaper with a dac?
How do the 620S stack up against the DT 700 Pro X? I know you are mostly competitive gaming but I do play a variety of games like FPS, MOBA, RPG, and MMO.
The Gunnr is... interesting. Adjusting soundstage and presence controls definitely detract overall sound. To get the most out of it, you need to run a Loki in series after it. That way you can EQ and compensate for the wonky frequency changes that come from using the Gunnr's adjustments. Sure, you're only using it as a DAC at that point, but it's a fairly useful tool if you can EQ for it.
They seem to be the best closed backs right now (270$). Currently use 560S but cant stand hearing the wifes TV anymore while gaming. Btw, review the A50 gen 5 :)
Looking to switch to a DAC with mic in, had a feeling the features on this were a bit of a gimmick. Guess I'll go for the Fulla E since it's priced better.
Hey Fresh.. Have you ever used the HD 660s? I was looking to maybe upgrade to the HD 800s but then I saw your review on the HD 490pro which doesn't break the bank as much... Would the 490's be a big upgrade paired with the dx9?
Answering my own question here: I bit the bullet and got one. Fresh's review is spot on. The HD490 pro is amazing compared to the HD660s. I now know what muddy means and the 660s definitely has muddy mids which is something you don't want for gaming. All I now need is a balanced cable :)
I wonder if they'll sell a lot of these Gunnr things. Seems like many people would go with either something simpler like a wireless USB headset or the more hardcore people would go with something higher end.
One of the attractive things on these units is the included mike plug in and mike gain control on the unit making it work very well for gaming in a simple all in one unit. I have a HEL2 and love it. Also the GUNNR can be a decent little amp for easier to drive headphones just running on the usb power with no external power plug in which again makes it a truly more portable simple carry along solution for some people. There are a lot of use cases that fit this style of gear very well for many people. Add in that is made by an American company, in an American plant and uses as many American made and sourced parts as possible is just another reason to buy Schiit audio gear.
What happens when you turn the knobs a little bit to the left? Also, you said it's a great amp/dac at default, but you also mentioned that it does not much to add anything to the 620's. So what makes it great, even at default?
I don’t want an amp dac adding a massive amount of warmth to any headphone or IEM. I want a neutral tonality for the most part without massive sound changes. It’s a good amp dac because it provides a nice sense of depth and doesn’t cut sound stage.
Any way to easily EQ this with an App? Just looking to boost the Bass, and treble slightly. I'm coming from a SoundBlasterx G6, and I'm tired of the finicky endless Volume dial, and the tacky ring light that bursts through it. It's not self powered either. The Gunnr seems to solve all of that and then some.
@@FreshReviewsYT Sounds good! And will your EQ settings transfer over to the Gunnr when using it with lets say the Nintendo Switch & PS5, or is it just limited to PC?

@@FreshReviewsYT for sure you’re insane in the clips and I love watching your content and would like to see you destroy people in whatever game you play, you stream?
Always dependent upon what you’re plugging in. The worse the default tuning, the better you may find the eq functionality. With anything good though, the eq is just nonsense. Also, turning the dial more than marginally to the right just turns things into a mess imo
@@FreshReviewsYT Yeah that makes sense. I’m guessing the frequency bands are just too wide with it only being 2 knobs. So fine tuning isn’t much of a option
I just bought the Seinheiser HD490 Pro due to my 560S breaking. I currently have a soundblaster gc7 and am wondering what is the best budget dac amp route to pair with the headphones or even if I should replace what I have? Will it make a difference in clarity? It's strictly for gaming purposes.
I don’t think so and the reason why is it cuts out way too much bass. It just amplifies and tries to deafen the mix and it doesn’t sound good. Sub, mid bass, and mids become distorted
Hi Fresh, I bought the IEM arete a few days ago and when I started listening to something, a slight static started that stopped seconds after stopping the music. I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem or if it is the fault of my DAC or computer.
So many things could be causing it. Could be the cable. Could be a faulty driver in the IEM. Could be a dislodged driver. Could be the amp dac. Hard to narrow down
@@FreshReviewsYT Dude, thank you for the vid and reply. I actually ordered the 490s! Can you give me a rec for a DAC/amp combo between 150-300 USD for gaming/streaming/music to power the 490s?
Of course it's just a gimmick. If the game itself has bad footsteps positioning and separation then NOTHING can change that. I remember when Battlefield V came out it had horrible footsteps, i tried different dac amps and different headphones and nothing.
The only thing Schiit is reliable for is living up to their name and having a shitty attitude towards their customers. Look into how many people got burned on the Hel release. Many out of the box broken units and were told to pay two-way shipping and wait months just for another dead unit to arrive. Strongly advise to stay away from Schiit products. If you have any problems, they will not be nice to you. Go with one of the Chifi companies or JDS if you want to pay the premium for American made products. They actually care about their customers.
Tried the 620s recently and I genuinely believe it’s the most overpriced headphone I’ve ever used. A 500 series build at 350 is unacceptable and stuff like the FiiO ft1 and k731 are better at half the price sound wise.
The ft1 is, I consider, better for gaming. The 620s isn’t going on my tier list. Isn’t it $299 though? I prefer the sound much more than a 770 and for music I do prefer it over the ft1. For gaming I prefer the ft1
Why not enable loudness equalization from windows and then do the footstep enhancement etc. with the gunnr. Since loudness equalization boosts everything and you don't want bass boosted you can lower it with the gunnr (i tried with the loki and it works well) but the gunnr seems to offer distance awareness to a better level i assume (not sure don't own one yet looking at reviews) wouldn't that overall be better for fps gaming etc. for hearing footsteps from a distance.
@@FreshReviewsYT ah ok so it doesn't layer differentiate sound meaning it doesn't layer footsteps gunshots etc.? If not do you know any dac's or any device that does?
@@michaelxv203 it doesn’t. It’s literally just changing the frequency. It’s deafening the frequency range and boosting the treble essentially at different ranges as you turn it. It’s not like loudness eq which would be interesting
@@FreshReviewsYT hmm ok, so it's essentially just increasing the 1k-4k range of sound while decreasing the lower end. Wouldn't the loki+ be a better version of this? Or is there something I'm missing

Hey I love all your content thank you for the reviews. Do you have any recommendations for iem for smaller ears? The shells on all iems I’ve tried hurt the cartilage on my outer ear:/ maybe bullet style or just small housing in general? Sorry if this isn’t the place to ask this.
Sure maybe the s12 2024
Thank you for the recommendation. Currently waiting on the xenn tea pro to arrive but those seem kinda large too. Will give s12 a go if that doesn’t work out!
Always love your opinion I’m looking at getting either your aretes or the kiwi ears orchestra lites for valorant apex and other games there like the same price just don’t know what are your thoughts on it
It’s better than the lite
Alr looks like I’m getting the aretes thank you sir. Thoughts on posting any gaming content I would love to watch more of you play and such
@@NoahSindeldecker I need to get more active again! Maybe post more shorts!
@@FreshReviewsYT for sure you’re insane in the clips and I love watching your content and would like to see you destroy people in whatever game you play, you stream?
hello brother where did you get that keyboard caps?
Goblin tech
hey you got the roadcaster. nice.
keyboard is God tier. Are those custom, custom keycaps?
@@Silver_Joystix yea these are the nacho custom caps from goblin tech
Hey there thanks for the review, how would this compare to the SoundblasterX G6?
I didn’t like the g6 when I tested it tbh
I bet the gunnr eq is just headphone dependent. Some headphones respond better to EQ than others
@@C0ffeeKing it seems that way yea
Never spending money at schiit again
I read a lot of people are not happy with their customer service side of things 🤦🏿🤷🏿
hey fresh im looking at getting the moon drop blessing iem's with a linsoul cable. Are these a good choice or would u recommend something else?
@@bigmon7197 now a days I’d recommend something else in terms of a gaming IEM. A lot has come out that is just really really good
What would u recommend for games like cod and rainbow?
what do you think it performs better between this and the ifi Zen DAC V3? I mostly play fps like warzone , delta force and nfs.

@@FreshReviewsYT thank you for replying. I appreciate your feedback. Love your channel
Have you paired the gunnr with the hd490 yet?
I haven’t yet
I just bought the Seinheiser HD490 Pro due to my 560S breaking. I currently have a soundblaster gc7 and am wondering what is the best budget dac amp route to pair with the headphones or even if I should replace what I have?
Will it make a difference in clarity?
It's strictly for gaming purposes.
People in the comments seem to like the topping dx3 pro +. The gunnr should also be great
@FreshReviewsYT I've been eyeing up the Atom Stack 2. It's a little more but seems to be a power house for the price.
Have you tested it?
hey man have you any thoughts on like most wired gaming headsets like hyperx cloud 3 cuz i rarely see them get tested with amps and such
When gaming, do you select stereo or 7.1 with something like dolby atmos?
Stereo always
Still torn between this or the fiio ft1? What would you prefer for music and gaming
Probably this
@ cheers legend
Hi saw your video about 560s and i got Logitech g pro x 2 should i switch to hd560s with Moondrop dawn pro and return the Logitech ones ?
Totally up to what you want. I’d pair the 560s with the gunnr if you need a mic
@@FreshReviewsYT don’t need a mic just need very good quality of sound to hear every footstep i can sacrifica the wirelesness
@@FreshReviewsYT im just asking if the Sennheiser are better for Gaming than the Logitech ones
Whats your main headphones for cod ?
Don't know if you've tried the new Spiral Dot Pro IEM eartips that just came out but if not, you're missing out.
Are they on Amazon? I’ll buy now
@@FreshReviewsYT Yes, That's where I bought mine. Ordered Friday and they arrived today.
If the knob doesnt help much with FPS games, does it help with immersion for open world gamea or movies?
I don’t think so and the reason why is it cuts out way too much bass. It just amplifies and tries to deafen the mix and it doesn’t sound good. Sub, mid bass, and mids become distorted
What are some of the most comfortable iems on the tier list?
The most comfortable iems are whatever ones you buy. 🫤 and then buy eartips you like. Or go ball out and get a custom mold of your ear done
i went from hel(gen1) to a fiio k11 r2r but now im considering this? do you happen to know which one is a better buy ?
Haven’t used the r2r
is still topping better for competitive gaming?
Idk if I’m dumb but did you do a video on the kazemi mousepad
@@Banvey just a TH-cam short.
@@FreshReviewsYT will you try the new hana
would this be enough to power my Hifiman Arya Stealth headphones?
Hi Fresh, I bought the IEM arete a few days ago and when I started listening to something, a slight static started that stopped seconds after stopping the music. I wanted to know if anyone else has had this problem or if it is the fault of my DAC or computer.
So many things could be causing it. Could be the cable. Could be a faulty driver in the IEM. Could be a dislodged driver. Could be the amp dac. Hard to narrow down
Gunnr or zen dac v3 which is better?
Both are great. I like the gunnr’s default sound a bit better
Topping Dx3 Pro+ better Pick than the Gunnr ?
I wouldn’t say better. I’d say though if you already own it I wouldn’t swap
@@FreshReviewsYT thanks, then im staying on the topping
Oh schiit
Haha
How about the Fiio FT1?
Full video next
@@FreshReviewsYT can't wait! I think it will perform rather well 😊
good gaming iems?
Tier list in description
these or HD 490 pro?
for gaming it isn't close. Go for the 490
@@FreshReviewsYT Dude, thank you for the vid and reply. I actually ordered the 490s! Can you give me a rec for a DAC/amp combo between 150-300 USD for gaming/streaming/music to power the 490s?
@ gunnr works well
Of course it's just a gimmick. If the game itself has bad footsteps positioning and separation then NOTHING can change that. I remember when Battlefield V came out it had horrible footsteps, i tried different dac amps and different headphones and nothing.
Of course headphones make a difference. A game audio might be exceptionally bad. Some headphones might make it more bad or less bad
Casually pops 3 heads with hand not even on the mouse...
😂
The only thing Schiit is reliable for is living up to their name and having a shitty attitude towards their customers. Look into how many people got burned on the Hel release. Many out of the box broken units and were told to pay two-way shipping and wait months just for another dead unit to arrive.
Strongly advise to stay away from Schiit products. If you have any problems, they will not be nice to you. Go with one of the Chifi companies or JDS if you want to pay the premium for American made products. They actually care about their customers.
@@strobe1691 damn, I had no idea. Able to send a link to the info about that?
@@michaelxv203 try it and let me know. The answer is no though.
