i just got mine today and ive only tested it with my ie300s and he-x4(ath r70x refine to come in march) on a couple songs and some 8d to double up on the width just for shits and giggles and man is this cool. being able to control all that on the fly instantly is awesome. and also just in general the gunnr really feels like it unlocked the he-x4. previously had the schiit fulla 3, and while good for what it was, this is an undeniable upgrade. yet to test it for gaming
Thank you so much for this informative and in-depth review of this gaming DAC. It looks like this company is serious about making our gaming audio very decent. Something to really consider and at a very reasonable price. Much appreciated content as always. Take care, Sir.
Thank you. The effort you took to explain and showcase the different features was very helpful, both visually and through audio samples. It answered all the questions I had about the features. You didn't include mentioning how this worked with any of the headphones I have in mind, but you used 800S and that is pretty much a universal reference.
I have been into audio for over 40 years (I started young, lol) and home theater for 30 years, but I have only been into desk audio for the last 5 years. Schiit was my first stack, and even though I have moved on (DX9), it will always have a special place in my heart.
Thank you for doing mic preamp tests. It's so difficult to find a good review with mic input tests. Please test the Fulla 3 if you're able to. Looking at both the Gunnr and Fulla 3. Having a difficult time finding reviews with mic input tests for the Fulla 3. Thanks again. Very good review, very good video
I use a several year old Schiit stack for preamp or headphones with streaming, gaming, and music and the value and performance still impresses me. The presence and width option via the gunnr now has me curious. Was good to see you floating around the SoCal CanJam and thanks for such a comprehensive review of this.
I'm actually looking forward to hearing your Aune SR7000 review. Since Aune has no idea how to advertise, it will be nice to hear from someone I trust.
Well produced, helpful content, and straightforward when it comes to presentation. Good stuff. I’m not a gamer, but I appreciate what you’re doing here. Subbed.
@@GadgetryTech No, but that’s what I figured, too. It turns out, though, you were making this video in the meantime; that’s awesome! Having said that, now I don’t know if I need the Gunnr to pair well with the new PS5 Pro or this SYN you just mentioned. After your last video, I ordered the LCD-GX and thought I really needed the Hel 2+, but since I can’t find that, I was going to settle on the Gunnr. Now that you mentioned the SYN and its surround capabilities, which sound wicked! I want to get the most out of everything the headset has to offer for immersion. What do you recommend?
So the Syn won't work any differently with headphones beyond what the Gunnr does. The Syn's surround features are for connecting to external amplifiers via RCA preout. It won't effect headphone performance. Sorry for the confusion!
@@GadgetryTech I have one more sort of specialized question, I ordered everything, but was curious. Should I order a Thunderbolt 5 USB-C to USB-C cable and could I connect that to the Gunnr then to the PS5 USB-C port, and have the same if not better audio signal through it, or is that just overkill?
Being ess/more on the analog side would benefit "gaming" headsets it feels like considering most are already warm over something like the Zen Dac which is warmer. Great coverage as always, wish there were a few more comparisons but it is what it is.
Hi, first of all thank you for the videos and information, the best in its field in my opinion. Question please: I only play on ps5 and I only play call of duty worzone, my headphones are vzr model one (Because of your video )which are connected to a sound blaster g6 sound card(Because of your video), do you recommend me to purchase schiit gunnr is this a leap or is it unnecessary...?
If I already have a sound blasterx g6 would it be an upgrade to get the gunnr? I know the mic input would be an upgrade but besides that. I use the H6pro and 560s.
I use the gc7 and am wondering the same thing. Trying to find what will be best with my new HD 490 pros. The HD 560S I had worked great with the sound blaster.
You're the best! Got this review out so quick. My hope for this dac was to be able to use this with my VZR Model One (OG) on ps5 with no EQ and be competitive with COD multi-player. It sounds like I should boost width and presence slightly and I'll be good to go. I was a little worried width would negatively impact hearing people behind me.
Yeah for FPS I 'm not a super fan of using Width. Only with a slight increase of width could it possibly help. Otherwise, the presence knob is helpful for products like the Model One. The better mic preamp performance is also better for the Model One mic!
Great review i just picked up a topping dx3 pro on sale for $170. But now the Gunnr is looking tempting perhaps down the line ill get it but for now the Dx3pro+ has been doing well for my senny HD6xx
whats up joe does the gunnr amp dac sound better then the hel 2 or do they sound the same? and does the jds element 3 bosted version sound better then the hel 2 and the gunnr?
can i use software on iOS to eq the noise out of the mic on the hel 2 if so whats the link to free software and after i do that does the hel 2 stay like that when u connect to the ps5?
how did u eliminate the background noise on the hel 2 plus connected to the ps5? i use it for the ps5 no pc how do i get rid of that background noise on the mic while using it on the ps5?
Nice review. Seems like a kickass product. If only they added some sort of sidetone or mic monitoring and (really reaching here) chat mix, it would be the ultimate device. Also, as clear as the pc38x sounds, it would’ve been nice to hear what a mod mic or the mic on something with more body (like the new mmx300) sounds like through the mic input. No biggie though, review is still very thorough like always 🤘
Had nothing but problems with the Schiit Hel would not connect to the ps5 had 2 with the same issue went with the mayflower arc mk2 great product. I may just have been unlucky but it has put me off schiit products since great video as always love your channel.
Nah, Schiit Hel was a terrible product that failed on many users. Mine failed and is now just a brick as well after about 1.5 years (also had some issues with their Lyr, but it never outright failed before I sold it)
My Hel 2+ only gets recognised by my PS5 anout a third of the time - usually have to reboot it or reconnect the USB to get is to be identified by the console. Have gone back to using a Qudelix 5k on the PS5 which works every time all the time.
Hey Joe, which would you recommend for PS5 between this, the soundblaster G6/new G8 or FiiO K11? The mic input option is not a big deal for me since I have the wireless antlion modmic. I’ve been using the HD 620S and Dusk (2024).
I was disappointed when the Hel+ went out of stock. Little did I know that Schiit was working on the successor product. I'm definitely getting the Gunnr!
I don't recommend these for high end headphones like HD800s or Hifiman HE1000SE headphones. Also I had to use another type of wall wart, because the one that comes with this doesn't have enough power imo. The width and presence controls are largely a gimmick and don't modify the sound in a pleasant nor natural way. It's basically like a half assed EQ. You're better off getting a FIIO k19 or JDS Element 4 when it's back in stock.
Hey Joe.i just got my smsl raw mda1 amp from watching your indepth and detailed review. Can't thank you enough,I love this thing, and the bluetooth option is fantastic.i am looking to replace the stock cable for my arya organic could you recommend any cables please. I've been looking at the luvricable ultimate silver line, with the gold plated plugs and not the rhodium option,as they enhance vocals and treble.the gold plated are more of a balanced all round sound which I think might be better suited.many thanks.
Got it as well. Really like it, didn't use the width function much, but the presence works as a crude EQ in a pinch, and I like it as a slight v shaped EQ by setting it to 10 o clock on the LCD-5 which helps push back the midforwardness it has a little. Nice for the newer Audezes (MM-100, 500, LCD5) that have mid forwardness.
Yeah that's my favorite part as well! The width was more helpful for some racing games than what I used it for in FPS. If anything, going too wide makes it more difficult to figure out where things are.
It's damn near silent, BUT, you do not want to turn it up super loud. Even at 30-40% I was well into the green zone with a PC38X. Less sensitive mics would probably still work well with 50-60% gain and still have low noise.

Sorry it's taking so long! I had/have a lot of high demand videos lately and I'm struggling to keep up. It's definitely on my short list and I'm trying to get it out in a reasonable amount of time.
Hi Gadgetrytech, question for ya. I’m currently using the Sennheiser HD 660S2 for gaming on my gaming PC. I have them plugged directly into the back of the motherboard (ALC4080). Would getting a dedicated amp provide a better audio experience for gaming or would I just be wasting my money? Thanks in advance!
So I can't always say with certainty it will be better or "X" times better, but in my experience, I've always noticed an improvement. A Schiit, JDS Labs, or FiiO amp/dac upgrade for a reasonable price can really take things to another level compared to onboard audio.
I picked up a used Creative X5 just before this got announced because I wanted a balanced dac/amp that had analog inputs so I could still use my gsx1000. Although not completely apples to apples and if you still have the X5 laying around, how would the Gunnr compare to the X5?
So I could have compared it to that as well, but chose the G6 due to popularity of it. The X5 is great, but a bit overpriced if you're chasing power to drive more current hungry headphones. The X5 has a much better mic preamp than the G6, but lacks in power output. It makes up for that with the robust feature set though such as on-board EQ, source blending, and BT. So they are a bit different outside of power spec!
Totally understandable. I lucked out and got a used X5 for 140 and just waiting for delivery. Current sale price is like 229 for a new unit so it's at least comparable price wise with the Gunnr. Currently IEM gaming because of California weather so power isn't much of an issue for me.
I need help deciding on a headset for xbox as of right now I'm really in between the rig 900 and the steelseries nova pro I'm mainly looking for something to fit around my ear and have great sound quality any tips? 🙏
I am a person that plays call of duty competitively and my setup I have rn is the hd560s with the schiit hell 2 . Would you recommend me stay with the hel or upgrade to the gunnr. I’m really interested in the presence and width and want to know if these headphones would even make the gunnr worth it !
I don't think it's worth it for CoD to be honest. It's an upgrade with regards to power, but the width/presence may not help much for competitive fps. The width knob actually made it more difficult to pinpoint people if it was set aggressively
Yeah I’ve watched your video and a other one and it seems that the width and presence isn’t doing as well when it comes to gaming , let’s just say I keep the gunnr in default and turn off the knobs , would the gunnr be a better upgrade when it comes to sound or hel would be about the same ?
I just ordered the Vzr Model One headset and the Schiit schiit gunnr Dac/Amp. Will there be any issue with sound if I plug the headset directly into the Audio out port without using the splitter for the Microphone. Going to use a separate Microphone. Just wondering if plugging in the headset without the splitter will cause sound issue. Should I use the splitter and just switch the Microphone to my usb one in my settings.
What impact does it have to bo6 i have the mix amp from astros would it be a difference art tune set up too does your auido tune for bo6 and this dac would be an upgrade or do i need anything else to make it sound better or have a better audio image what i need to be competitive?
Such a missed opportunity to not include side tone to make this a complete package. I would 100% buy this if it had that feature instead of the gimmicky width/presence knobs.
I dont know i was looking to buy amp/dac toi replace my old Zxr audio card , which one to buy the topping dx3+ or this one ...i mean the Gunnr here is like 100 more.....
It's hard to answer in a short way, but I do compare it to the Hel 2 often in the video. I think if you like the Hel 2's layout/form factor and it works for you, just stick with it. Otherwise the Gunnr can work without the power supply which is nice, and the width/presence knobs are something to fun to play with. They aren't necessary for enjoyment though
I’m so lost in this audio world, I’m leaning towards the Senheisser 660s2 and pairing it with the shiit modius e and magni+…. I can be convinced otherwise
I want a beastie boys T shirt thats old skool fire Joe. I've been having a break from my amp/dacs this last six months after all my many headphones I've been using the epos H6pro for a while now for long gaming sessions no fatigue no amp/dacs
The timing of this video. I just got mine delivered this week 😊
Hell yeah! I hope you love it
Does it work with the Xbox Series consoles? That’s the only thing that’s irking me before I buy it. 😅

If you need more power, and do not need on-board EQ, the Gunnar is a big upgrade.
I have a audio mixer for my xlr mic, how do I pair it with a dac/ amp such as this? Tia
Such a missed opportunity to not include side tone to make this a complete package. I would 100% buy this if it had that feature instead of the gimmicky width/presence knobs.
Dude you gotta get logo on ya cap. Now looking into this dac. Have the G6 at mine. Good vid 👍
Haha thanks! Been trying to keep the look clean but may do it soon
Is schiit gunnr with pc38x will the mic be compatible and work with the ps5. Wish xbox would figure something out.
I dont know i was looking to buy amp/dac toi replace my old Zxr audio card , which one to buy the topping dx3+ or this one ...i mean the Gunnr here is like 100 more.....
No mic monitoring which I find critical for closed backs like my VZR's. Come on Schitt I want a high quality got it all Hi-Fi gaming device !
Is it better than the classic schiit stack?
Can you adjust volume using windows volume bar or does it bypass it ?
I wish it also had XLR, did not find anything yet that is simple and supports XLR.
6:25 I have the same shell on my M3 Macbook Air.
Should i get this or a Mayflower Arc 2 used for half the price??
Will this be a big improvement over my GC7?
I love the $15 saving as I have plenty of schiit products
Does this have surround ?
How would that compare to an iBasso DC Elite ?
I'm using schiit hel 2E, is this schiit gunnr any different from hel 2E? Thank you
It's hard to answer in a short way, but I do compare it to the Hel 2 often in the video. I think if you like the Hel 2's layout/form factor and it works for you, just stick with it. Otherwise the Gunnr can work without the power supply which is nice, and the width/presence knobs are something to fun to play with. They aren't necessary for enjoyment though
@@GadgetryTech tks u so much
You know what amp/dac I can use for dual PC?
Whats the headset in the thumbnail?
Aune sr7000
@TheRexilius do you know what mic attachment he's using with the headset? I looked up the headset and it doesn't come with it.
@@TheRexilius nvm i found after a couple of hours. It's the Meze Audio Boom Mic

Please do a review on the Sony MDR-M1!
I bought one and it's here! Trying to catch up on so many new launches!
@@GadgetryTech idk if anyone told you this today… but you are the man! Looking forward to the review!
how is the performance with ps5?
I’m so lost in this audio world, I’m leaning towards the Senheisser 660s2 and pairing it with the shiit modius e and magni+…. I can be convinced otherwise
Look up issues people have had before buying anything from Schitt.
I want a beastie boys T shirt thats old skool fire Joe.
I've been having a break from my amp/dacs this last six months after all my many headphones I've been using the epos H6pro for a while now for long gaming sessions no fatigue no amp/dacs
