- Union Station is an American bluegrass and country band associated with singer Alison Krauss. The act established in 1987 as a backup band for Krauss is usually referred to as Alison Krauss and Union Station and was initially composed of Krauss, Jeff White, Mike Harman and John Pennell. Later additions included Tim Stafford, Ron Block, Adam Steffey, Barry Bales and Larry Atamanuik. In 1992, Stafford was replaced by guitar and mandolin player Dan Tyminski and in 1998, Steffey left and was replaced by dobro player Jerry Douglas.
Alison Krauss had signed to Rounder Records, and at age 16 released her 1987 debut album Too Late to Cry. Soon after she joined Union Station, with Jeff White, John Pennell, and Mike Harman as her backing band. Their debut album in 1989 was Two Highways.[1] The album included the traditional tunes "Wild Bill Jones" and "Beaumont Rag", along with a bluegrass interpretation of The Allman Brothers' "Midnight Rider".
Krauss' contract with Rounder Records required her to alternate between releasing a solo album and an album with Union Station. So after yet another solo album I've Got That Old Feeling in 1990, Krauss' second Union Station album was Every Time You Say Goodbye released in 1992. The album went on to win her second Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album of the year. This album featured a completely different lineup (other than Krauss): Tim Stafford, Ron Block, Adam Steffey, and Barry Bales. Bales and Block would become permanent fixtures in the band.
Tim Stafford left the band in 1992[2] and was replaced by mandolin and guitar player Dan Tyminski from Lonesome River Band. During 1993, Tyminski briefly rejoined Lonesome River Band and was then replaced by John R. Bowman who toured with Union Station until 1994[3] when Tyminski returned as a permanent member.
So Long So Wrong, another Union Station album, was released in 1997 and won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. One critic said its sound was "rather untraditional" and "likely [to] change quite a few ... minds about bluegrass".[4] Included on the album is the track "It Doesn't Matter", which was featured in the second season premiere episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer[5] and was included on the Buffy soundtrack in 1999.
Adam Steffey left Union Station in 1998, and was replaced by renowned Dobro player Jerry Douglas.
Their next album, New Favorite, was released on August 14, 2001. The album went on to win the Grammy for Best Bluegrass Album, with the single "The Lucky One" winning a Grammy as well. Lonely Runs Both Ways was released in 2004, and eventually became another Alison Krauss & Union Station gold certified album. Ron Block described Lonely Runs Both Ways as "pretty much... what we've always done" in terms of song selection and the style, in which those songs were recorded.[6] Krauss believes the group "was probably the most unprepared we've ever been" for the album and that songs were chosen as needed rather than planned beforehand.
Returning with Union Station, Alison Krauss released a new album called Paper Airplane on April 12, 2011,[7] the follow-up album to Lonely Runs Both Ways (2004). Mike Shipley (the engineering mixer) said that it took a lot of time to do the album because of Krauss' non-stop migraines.[8][9]
In 2014, she and her band Union Station toured with Willie Nelson and Family, with special guests Kacey Musgraves, and The Devil Makes Three.

It's not just their incredible talent, their gifted voices, the unbelievable voice of Allison, but their true friendship and how much fun they have playing and singing some of these fantastic songs. I honestly can not think of one group that has put together the talent for music they have. I am 75 and only found them in the last ten years. They have made all those years better and I don't miss a day listening to at least an hour of their music. They have made my life better.

Dam, I just love the inflections in Dan Kaminski's voice & Allison's. Both masters of any instruments they play. Jerry Douglas & Tony Rice were my inspiration to record with the Kentucky Root's band in 2003 ( Bob Harris, Steven Lutke, Travis Wetzel & Randy Bailey). I love all you guy's & the versatile idioms of music in which you play! Captain Jim Silk (guitar, vocalist/Song writer). 🍀🌹

There's a feeling I get on a Sunday afternoon, after the family has lunch together and Dad discusses the Scriptures the Pastor went over in Church....after the dishes are done and everyone lays down for a nap...in the silence and solitude, I sneak into the kitchen and dish myself up some of the peach cobbler Mom made yesterday afternoon and after applying a SUBSTANTIAL scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, I proceed to treat myself to this culinary delight as I look through the screen-door across the meadow and dream of the girl I'm in love with...who's in love with me.....

I've seen Alison only once and it was a free outside show she was a part of. It was a WARM, dusty afternoon, at the Livingston Parish Fairgrounds, in Louisiana. A radio station was sponsoring a concert promoting the music of a new, unknown artist. You may recognize his name now: Vince Gill. An older sister, who couldn't go, gave her ticket to me, and begged me to tell her what Vince was like. However I WENT TO SEE ALISON IN PERSON!
I was beyond ecstatic standing but a few feet from one of MY MUSIC IDOLS!
How LUCKY BLESSED I felt.
Ive come along and have seen Vince live 3 or 4 times as well.
I wish SOMEBODY would smarten up and award Alison the Presidential Medal of Freedom! AND, how about Kennedy Center Honors?❤

Thanks for posting the entire show, a few clips were up on YT, but not the whole thing for awhile. While supposedly an unscripted, impromptu format, clearly the songs requested were screened in advance, because there was nothing requested or played that didn't lineup with their then current playlist. It very much was an edited version of their live concert DVD.

Dan Traminski is such a unsurpassed mandolin & guitar player. His vocals are so unique, strong & touch my soul. Dan...your guitar & mandolin playing needs to be blended louder ( there's so much that I can't even begin to say about all the members of UNION STATION) I grew up playing with Bob Harris (Vassar Clements lead guitarist 16 yrs) & he turned me on to Tony Rice & Jerry Douglas. Thank you Allison & Union station all for all your hard work. You are all "a National Treasure". Vince James

On my way back to choog a choog, or something like that. I could never understand those words, but apparently it is a reference to Georgia. Awesome concert but I REALLY wanted to hear ghost in this house. That song has haunted me for years, since I bought the DVD of the live concert in Louisville.
"Jeeor-gi-ja" ala, Geor-gi-a. At least that's how I hear it. Agreed GITH at Kentucky is an absolute treasure. The acoustics in the hall makes her voice soar even more. Cheers.

When You Say Nothing At All.....somehow missing the mandolin which makes the instrumental part of the song....AKUS, none better in the biz.
