Anthony, I do recall inmates trying to "small talk" me and other Counselors and Therapists. I think your advice applies to non-Custody Staff as well.

Whoever is asking the questions is the one in control of the conversation. Just like When you're being interviewed by a reporter or talk show host.

Good advice. When we're talking we're giving away information about ourselves.

One thing that I have encountered is that inmates get moved around more often than what most COs and Admin Staff care to think about as well as the fact that many offenders, when released back into communities, will come in contact with staff on the outside.
Inmates can and will find out information about staff at any time for any reason, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE "DIRTY" STAFF for an inmate or released offender to have access to staff information deemed "personal".
Just be careful. You don't have to share information. They will find what they are looking for if for ANY REASON that ANY STAFF are made out as a TARGET. They has mastered the art of manipulation and they will make crap up if you are doing your job just to get the "GOOD" STAFF out of their way.
Be and remain consistent, follow policy to the best of your ability, and communicate effectively with your supervisors.

So this is where one asks ones self how up they are on inmate tactics and Manipulation. If you think you are good you should rethink your premise as you are probably wrong. It's easy to think the easy way is easy, the truth is it ain't. Rapport evaporates with the smallest of disagreements yet I see officer spend so much time on "rapport building ". I'm not saying it's not good to have definitive verbal skills but rather that being manipulated while looking like you have verbal game is not the same thing as ACTUALLY having verbal game.

See the moment u said we should be asking the questions , turned me off. Why would I want to know? Anything about them?

There are many reasons we talk to inmates and many reasons we would be asking questions. The whole job is predicated on communication. Questions require responses. Everything from an investigation to inquiries about their identity, their destination, their purpose, their assigned housing. Who, what, when, where, how and why. These are the word that allow you to direct the conversation.

@@russhamilton3800 outside of the need to know, to run a safe facility. I mean, I personally don’t want to know who their team is

@MelissaOhh it just depends on the individual at the time you make the conversation, I've had conversations with some where they never asked me a question but told me a whole bunch about themselves and family members and after they felt more relaxed and less distant during later conversations, makes it easier to approach if you need to get that inmate for stuff like medical or breakfast, up for work ect
