I watched leaving las vegas in the theatre drunk several times when it came out. I was convinced it was a comedy. Only years later when I saw it again on the couch at home with my wife, sober, I realised it was in fact a deeply depressing tragedy. My conclusion is that life is like a comedy when your drunk.
Your comment reminds me of the times I'd watch Intervention. If I was drunk, I'd laugh my ass off, but if I just smoked a joint, I would cry like a bitch. Either way, that show is not to be watched sober.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was an incredible actor because he was able to be himself in so many different roles due to his addiction issues, which I'm sure stemmed from his own personal insecurities. It really sucks he is gone because every single character he played was genius.
