Aahh , public domain/shareware games. A totally underappreciated part of the Amiga repertoir. Tanx , Trick or treat and deluxe Pac-man are the ones on this list I’ve played the most. Another one we played a lot was Extreme violence. Hilariously fun party game.
I sought out a lot of PD games early on in my Amiga years: I bought an A1000 in November of 1986, and there were not many commercial games around then, and those that were around were often not very good. I joined the Commodore user group ICPUG, and got a few disks from them. One early game I remember was Software Distillery's Space Invaders clone 'Amoeba Invaders'. Another was Grav Attack, the author of which released a commercial version that I don't recall the name of. When the first Amiga magazines launched, those with coverdisks (e.g. ST/Amiga Format) would put a small PD game on, if there was room (the disk capacity was split between the ST and Amgia). Amiga Computing's disk was the same. Got a few nice games from mags, like Drip and Cave Runner.
I loved Tetris Pro. Personally, I never found it annoying as the controls were spot on, there was a nice 'clicking' sound as the pieces descended....and the music was chilled and very relaxing. I was also obsessed with Deluxe Pacman - what a great remake that was! Happy days.
Extreme violence was my favourite PF game. It's a classic 2 player made game where you hunt each other down with guns. Check it out and you'll love it!
Absolutely brilliant as always sir OSG!! My god, the hours I spent on Biplane Dual and Dogfight with my mates!! I remember getting them from the back of a magazine, used to send off a postal order and a blank disc and they would fill your disc with public domain stuff and post it back!! Great days! Brilliant video as always sir, hope your feeling better too!
Loved a bit of Trick or Treat with the cardboard divider down the middle of the CRT screen. Another classic two player missing from this list though, Extreme Violence!
Absolutely awesome video mate.... Can't argue with any of the choices here (especially number 1 and 2... Deluxe Galaga and Super Obliteration are just special games that would have been considered arcade classics if released back in the day as Arcade games). Some other great free Amiga games worth checking out are: 1_Bounce (1995)(Wyatt, Ben) a excellent platformer with a built in and easy to use construction set. 2_Jouster v3.0 (1995)(Pawprint Software) a version of Joust that in my opinion improves on the arcade original. 3_Legend of the Exploding Fist (1998)(I. Andrews) Uses the sprites of "way of the exploding fist" but you can have a royal rumble or a five against all fight. 4_Bratwurst (by 3le, Three Little Elks) A two to four player thrust game with 3D scaling. Does need an expanded A1200 (I used to have an 030 back in the day, and it would play this game as smooth as silk.) 5_Star Woids... a really good thrust clone, in which you pilot an X-wing. 6_Motorola Invaders 2.... A space invader game with two different levels and a main big boss, that played a snippet of Metalica's song "Sad but true". 7_Zeberk... Bezerk game, best played at full speed 8_Diamond Caves... Boulderdash type game, with a few added extras. Used to also be a nice Aga version, as I remember.
Personally I always preferred Gravity Wars to Tanks. Firstly because it was am (unlicenced) Star Trek game, and I loved Star Trek as a kid. But secondly because the addition of planets in the playfield that you had to bend your shots around using their gravity made it much more strategic and fun.
Glad to see Knights here, it’s a v special game! Not really seen it’s particular gameplay style replicated or improved on since. I’d not heard of either of the “thrust control” 2 player games here, I used to love Gravity Force 2 though! Oh and for artillery games there’s also Charr, which takes the weapon options to hilarious places. Tanx was definitely a lot more accessible though.
Wow, so much nice memories as always! 😊 I remember Tanx needed the 512k RAM expansion board for the Amiga 500, and I got so excited to buy it and finally manage to play! 😄 I would include Scorched Tanks as well, a super-dope version of Tanx with lots of different weapons. 😉
That reminds me...anyone remember Ice Runner? It was just another Lode Runner Clone, but had nice, clean-cut graphics, and was strangely addictive, I thought.
Master Blaster and Extreme Violence are 1 and 2 for me. But lovely to see Rygar in there - it’s such a brilliant and much deeper game than it gets credit for and an obvious inspiration for Hawkeye.
Bi-Planes was great. Used to go round my mates house after school just to play that game. One of the first games I got when I bought my A600 and still play it every now and then
Thanks mate if you have a way to play these games they are really worth your time especially if unlike me you have someone to play the 2 player ones with lol
The way that that _Dogfight_ game has a split-screen that seamlessly joins reminds me of something that the Lego® games would eventually do; when _Lego® Indiana Jones™ 2_ came out in 2009 it also was the first of those Lego® games to adopt a screen-splitting technique not wildly dissimilar to this so that in a two-player game the two players no longer had to remain in the same area of a level and could do their own thing, unlike in all of the previous Lego® games, with the screen seamlessly joining back into one when both were once again close enough.
Edgar Vigdal's games are the only ones on the list that I played. BOY DID I PLAY THEM A LOT. (esp the one mentioned later in the list) ;) Looks like I missed out on several gems in the list that are new to me. Cheers, OSG!
Great to see so many post 1994 gems on the list. Haven't played most of those but I remember Super Obliteration very fondly. I believe Amiga Power put it on one of their coverdisks. Drip was also great fun and Quik & Silva is another title I thought was really excellent for a PD release (done by Factor 5). It apparently is the first (released) game EVER to have Sonic in it... (!)
Another cracking video for me to go back to, Drip was great and Biplane Duel me and my mate use to play a lot after school. Super Obliteration you had me at Turrican meets Pang!
The Assassin's games disks were a great (still are) source for Amiga PD games back in the day. Some of my favs include Oblivion - arcade perfect Defender clone Poing - Best Arkanoid/Krakout/Super Breakout clone known to man Zombie Apocalypse - Blitz BASIC Operation Wolf given away on a mag coverdisk Tobias Richters Star Trek - an absolute gem of a game. Kind of cross between Elite and the old 70s Star Trek strategy game. I also remember Wibbly World Giddy and Crazy Sue but don't remember spending quality time with them.
A couple noteworthy PD ports are Moria and Nethack - both classic roguelikes with ASCII text graphics. The Amiga ports were noteworthy for replacing the ASCII with actual multi-color pixel art graphics tiles. I played lots of Moria, although to be honest I think it works better with ASCII rather than graphics tiles.
One game that is definitely missing from the list is Poing. It is a masterpiece with fluid gameplay and stunning music (Paul van der Valk). Still play this occasionally with emulator now that I have a decent mouse :D So many gameovers due to mouseball getting dirty :)
Good ol' Amiga PD games, how many soundbytes from Red Dwarf did you have to listen to while capturing all the footage? But theonly other game ive ever seen split screens mergelike that was Dragon Ball Z 2 on the SNES BTW Ever thought of doing a video on Amiga FPS games too?
@Larry Bundy Jr Another set of games that adopted that seamless splitting and rejoining of the screen are the Lego® games from _Lego® Indiana Jones™ 2_ (2009) onwards. Up until that game came out both players had to be in the same screen area and could not wander off, but _LIJ2_ fixed that with that similar screen-splitting malarkey so players are not only no longer constrained to both be on-screen in the same part of a level, but there is also not the same risk of the edge of the screen pushing the other player over the edge of a precipice and losing a whole heap of Lego® studs (those games’ currency) in the process.
Wow, I never heard of BabeAnoid before - it looks stunning! I love that high resolution feel from the smaller square blocks and the whole Bitmap Bros aesthetic. And I remember Tank, but it's really basic compared to the later Charr. Charr was a Scorched Earth clone, but made superior by a few things. The main thing is that it eliminated the boring purchasing phase between rounds. Instead, you bought rounds just before shooting them - instant gratification! Charr is still my favorite game of the type, by far.
Brilliant OSG but there's one game missing that was simply stunning for a PD game and that was a Defender clone called Oblivion. Check it out, simply fantastic.
I'm not really a defender Dan mate I think there is also a game called datastorm (not sure if freeware or not) that my mates always go on about me not including in lists...but if I don't like the game it's cloned off.... Lol
Glad to see knights there. Spent many hours on that one. I kind of skipped some of the vid but I dont think I saw colonial conquest 2 which to me was the best pd game on the amiga.
Had a few of these games on your list, use to get the from the computer shop on the way to town. Spent hours looking at all the PD discs he had, most of the time we got stuff by what sounded cool but that didn't always work out to well haha. Great video buddy so roll on the next one :-)
I had a few go to PD titles I played a fair bit of some of my favourites was The Shepherd, Sneech and Black Dawn a Dungeon crawler. There were also apps and one app I thought was really great and was ahead of its time I believe was Aegis Animator a really fun and easy to use vector/polygon animation app.
I recognised that as being adopted into the _Lego®_ games, too. I believe 2009’s _Lego® Indiana Jones™ 2_ was the first game to adopt that split- and rejoin-screen approach. Another good thing about putting that into those games is that you couldn’t inadvertently pull the other player off a ledge and have them fall to their death and lose a lot of studs simply because the edge of the screen pulled them over the edge whilst you were trying to go somewhere that was off-screen.
Nice list. I am hoping to work on one soon. If you need Babeanoid Hidden Worlds let me know. The Amiga public domain scene still has a lot being released.
Another Tetris remake and long-time favourite of mine has just sprung to mind.... *Tetren.* If this kind of game floats your, go try it....it's a little bit different, and well worth the trouble.
I think in the case of these, they're public domain because they're made out of pure passion & heart. These games are good because they were passionate & determined to make it. They don't make money out of it, but they don't care because their game is out there for others to play & enjoy. Simply put: Doing It For the Art
Wow, this is a hefty undertaking OSG... there's about 1000000 Amiga PD titles out there, lol.. but this is awesome because I havent even begun to venture out into the PD world, so this is fantastic, cheers for the video!! How you feeling a bit better too mate.
Oh my god, I had Trick or Treat on a coverdisk and had completely forgotten it. Probably the first FPS I ever played and while it was pretty limited it was technically pretty good. A lot of commercially released FPS games on the Amiga weren't as good. Death Mask in particular.
Yeah the Galaga version I got from Aminet was Elite.... Also, some more fun games to try: Bloodfest Diamond Caves was great... its like a Boulderdash clone.. Forgotten Mine is another one similar Top Hat Willy ! (another one similar was Jetset Willy... but I think Top Hat was bigger!) Wizzy's Quest (that game was fun!)
That dog fight v1.1 with it split screen that merged when close I'm sure i played other games back in the day that did that, maybe even on the spectrum one of them but i just cant remember what those games were or what system from 83 to 87 that was, hopefully it will pop back in my head one day lol, also did you say you use an emu TUT TUT really expecting you to use original hardware like chinny and I do.
Well I just need an scart to HDMI upscaler that works to do so. I have the capture card and an upscaler but think the upscaler is outputting not pal as the picture is barely visible ... What do you use?
Was going to comment that you missed Creepy Crawlies, an excellent Centipede clone that I had a lot of fun with. But then I remembered that it was shareware, not freeware. If you're ever doing a top Amiga shareware games list, you have to check out that one. :)
this is much better than my initial experience with PD titles, honestly all i could find were terrible games with poor pixelated pornography being the only entertainment, i will have to keep my eyes open here on.
@@oldstylegaming i'll have to take you up on that when i get a new laptop, this one's going south on me in a bad way, dunno when it's gonna tapout, could be next month, could be 6 months from now idk.
@@oldstylegaming even though we were used to pressing up to jump no denying 2nd button to jump not only was better but massive improvement to the gameplay
Damn .. I didn't know half of these games .. great video. Especially as I adore Wizard of Wor and never even heard of Monsters of Terror. If you are looking for another great PD game on the Amiga, try Risk by Bernstein Zirkel. Yeah, it's just a port of the old board game, but it's the best port on ANY platform (well the PS4 version IS objectively better, but its also not over 30 years old)
Defo I've got a few planned obvs being doing the top 30 best games and I was gonna do a one on when the ST best the Amiga cos there were times when that happened. Also I'm in the middle of a cross platform video that I've been on with for a while Amiga - ST with null modem
Just remembered another classic PD platform game that once appeared on a magazine floppy disk....maybe commodore Format? Anyway, 'Doody' - that's the game's name. Ever try it, OSG?
@@oldstylegaming Hi OSG, we had it on the Amiga 600 but to be fair I am not 100% sure if it was PD.... I think I remember getting it on a demo disk, looking at it now I think it was PD. Have a look as it will certainly make you smile! ;)
Yes I absolutely agree, incredibly good game and certainly among the best Star Trek games (although after Birth of the Federation). He really out did himself. BTW. Tobias went on to do a significant part of the effects for the movie Star Trek - Prelude to Axanar. Which is hands down best Star Trek movie made since First Contact.
@@frankschneider6156 I must have thousands of hours in botf, great game. If you like Trek you should have a look at the the Star Trek Armarda III mod for sins of a solar empire. Its great. Feels like an updated version of botf. (look up some you tube vids), my favourite Trek game on the PC. (and its a free mod :p)
Deluxe Galaga war kein Public Domain, sondern es wurde als Shareware vertrieben. Später, wurde es in einer Full Version frei zum Download angeboten! :) R.i.p Edgar. :(
@@oldstylegaming I see how my comment could be interpreted both ways. But I really appreciate these Amiga and C64 Top games lists. I am really into retro computing and gaming myself and these videos makes me aware of games to try out which I may not have tried or didn't know was good. Keep up the great videos
Haven't watched this yet but where is Game X and how could you forget Game Y? Also I would like to make you aware of a hidden gem called Game Z. Will fill this in later.
Game X: Gravity Force 2 / Gravity Power Gravity Power also has the feature where the two halves of the screen link when players are close. Game Y: Scorched Tanks Game Z: Tanx 'n' Stuff More: Poing series, WAR, Atoms!, Springtime
Popeye is a really good one not on the list. It's the C64 version with an enhanced Amiga palette and a cartoon intro. Rygar looks great but doesn't like RetroArch on any emulator frontend. Only got it working on my paid Amiga Forever.
The Amiga PD scene was incredible, some absolute classics created out of love that sometimes put commercial releases to shame.

I can send you these if you want
@@oldstylegaming i'll have to take you up on that when i get a new laptop, this one's going south on me in a bad way, dunno when it's gonna tapout, could be next month, could be 6 months from now idk.
Nice one, I can see I'm going to have to give some of these a go
i have the zip file with them in on my drive that i shared with Lucas if you want it mate
I played deluxe galaga A LOT!!!!!!!
Thanks for all you do really love your videos! 👍
Aw thanks mate :-)
Aga rygar looks superb. Even supports 2 buttons for easy jumping
yeah i love the 2 button supported games
@@oldstylegaming even though we were used to pressing up to jump no denying 2nd button to jump not only was better but massive improvement to the gameplay
Nice one 👍🏻 knights was my jam.
I love Bomb Jack, Nice to see it with better graphics and colours compared to the Spectrum version!
Have you seen the MSX2 remake? its even better than this
Transplant, and even more so Colonial Conquest 2.
Yeah man, Transplant is great :)
Damn .. I didn't know half of these games .. great video. Especially as I adore Wizard of Wor and never even heard of Monsters of Terror.
If you are looking for another great PD game on the Amiga, try Risk by Bernstein Zirkel. Yeah, it's just a port of the old board game, but it's the best port on ANY platform (well the PS4 version IS objectively better, but its also not over 30 years old)
Great Video as always. Any chance you could provide a link to where you found BabeAnoid. like you said in the Video all the offical links are dead :(
Let me look tonight mate
Could you do a video about good atari st games please.
Defo I've got a few planned obvs being doing the top 30 best games and I was gonna do a one on when the ST best the Amiga cos there were times when that happened. Also I'm in the middle of a cross platform video that I've been on with for a while Amiga - ST with null modem
Surprised that The Adventures of Quik & Silva didn't make the cut. I also like Wizzy's Quest.
im gonna check that Auik & Silva out i think someone said it has sonic in...is that right?
@@oldstylegaming Yeah supposedly he is there it also has Chris Hulsbeck providing the music.
Just remembered another classic PD platform game that once appeared on a magazine floppy disk....maybe commodore Format? Anyway, 'Doody' - that's the game's name. Ever try it, OSG?
no but ive just read another comment about that game so ill check it out mate
Remember transplant ? It would be one of the best if not the best Amiga P.D. shoot them ups of all times
I'm pretty certain I still have most of these on disk :)
Nice :-)
love rygar,well done lads
Aye. Good to hear geordie
Not sure if Doody, an excellent Mario Bros clone, would be count as PD, but if yes, it would be in my top 3 :)
Doody? ive never heard of that game...ill check it out though
love ur videos ! are u from the north east by any chance
Lol what give it away?
old style gaming a could tell str8 away hahahahaha i hardly ever come across any youtubers from up north n that
@@allandavis8667 i know ...weird that as we are the best lol
I think dogfight copied a sound effect from supercars 😀
I spent so much time on turboraketti
Some true PD gems!
No PD list is complete without Turboraketti. :)
Loved the video but where is Revenge of the Mutant Camels???? ;D
was that out on the Amiga? was it PD?
@@oldstylegaming Hi OSG, we had it on the Amiga 600 but to be fair I am not 100% sure if it was PD.... I think I remember getting it on a demo disk, looking at it now I think it was PD. Have a look as it will certainly make you smile! ;)
So someone can make a remaster and re-release them to the public?
How can you not have the Tobias Star trek game on here, best star trek game on the amiga. :)
sorry mate
@@oldstylegaming Hehe, . Its fine, we all have our favourites....loving the channel. Keep up the good work :)
@@chriscowey7464 Same here, I possibly sank more hours into BoTH than Elite. Didn't know about Star Trek Armada III, I'll look it up. Thanks mate.
Deluxe Galaga war kein Public Domain, sondern es wurde als Shareware vertrieben. Später, wurde es in einer Full Version frei zum Download angeboten! :) R.i.p Edgar. :(
Bomb Jack was good on the speccy. A lot better than the c64 or Amiga versions.
The 20 Best TH-camrs Who Do Top 20 Games For Commodore 64 And Amiga: 1: old style gaming 2 :..... 3: ...... 4: ......
Lol.... I don't know whether that's a compliment or an insult? Are you sivk of 20 best lists ? I can and plan to mix it up a bit
@@oldstylegaming That is a compliment. Love your top games videos
@@larsenmats Thanks mate... Just making sure lol
Game X: Gravity Force 2 / Gravity Power
Gravity Power also has the feature where the two halves of the screen link when players are close.
Game Y: Scorched Tanks
Game Z: Tanx 'n' Stuff
More: Poing series, WAR, Atoms!, Springtime
There were quite a few that I wanted on this list But I had to condense it down to 20 :-(
No Ork Attack?
I still think tetren is best Tetris clone in public domain
Popeye is a really good one not on the list. It's the C64 version with an enhanced Amiga palette and a cartoon intro.
Rygar looks great but doesn't like RetroArch on any emulator frontend. Only got it working on my paid Amiga Forever.
