    Dude your tutorial videos are really good. You'communicate concepts concisely, effectively, and eloquently, and keep your (and by proxy the viewer's) focus on the important information. I feel like if I had someone like you or videos like this back in the day I'd be so much better than I am now.
    It sure beats the hell out of staring at a sequence in a mag and trying to guess what's going on and then just using trial and error for literally years on end to learn one trick.

    update: put ur feet closer, when u pop and slide up the friction is gonna bring the board up automatically then you'll know what you have to do.As ur popping down start sliding up ur front foot, but u wanna make sure ur rubbing ur shoe against the griptape and you'll do an ollie like nothing. Then i'd add the spring technique and the board is gonna float up with u

    This. This tip made me ollie over higher things fearlessely (and down things !). The word that unlocked me was the "spring". Thinking that I was a spring ahah. even on my other tricks. That fixed my timing! Tank you!

    Hey Norman, thanks for the upload, you made some good points.
    Here's my two cents on the matter that I thought of 10 seconds ago: when you talk about the difference between ollieing on flat vs ollieing over/on an obstacle, I think the reason you pop higher on the latter is because your head is up and looking at the obstacle as opposed to looking down at your feet while bending your neck (spinal misalignment). You can't jump high with your head down! You get physiological (I am very smart) advantage when ollieing over something, and the higher the obstacle the more aligned your spine is, right? If your ollie technique is aight then it's basically all in the jump/tuck. Also sum good speed helps/ looks better

  • @sebjan180

    This was great, I feel it's always something new with each tutorial vid, so not to detract from others, but the part about bringing up my knees really resonates, I realise I haven't really practised that at all and your illustration of the late pop looked pretty spot on to my current ollie style. Super helpful, thanks!

      I’m happy this is useful for you. I took a little from lots of skaters, when I was learning. Everyone has their technique, and some work for you, others don’t. My style is a big pot of gumbo.

    Loved the video. Today I was practicing the knees to chest bit and man is it exhausting! That bit is so important for a higher ollie. This month I’m training my hip flexors and see if that makes a difference. There’s a lot of speed involved in that movement. Subbed.

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Man, you said it: it’s exhausting. Jump roping, and bringing your knees up high every other jump will help (learned that taking boxing lessons from Diana Prazak). Thanks for watching and for the sub. Making a video about another crucial, and overlooked, aspect of popping, high very soon.

    I do pop while my head is still rising but after this video I noticed I could be doing it a little earlier during the rise (In an unconscious attempt to avoid missing the impulse of my rise)... As a matter of fact, I consciously tried to delay my pop just a little more after watching this, still while rising, and the results are ollies than felt higher and effortless at the same time.

    • @NormanWoods
      @NormanWoods  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mentioned your placement on the tail. About half an inch from the edge is ideal. All of the other issues are subjective. So, you shouldn’t really focus on them until your technique is solid. But, once you have all the movements dialed, you. An search for your shape. I try not to have the board in front of me. I breaks boards that way. My ideal position with my head just behind the front leg.

    Hi Norman,
    Thank you for your videos, they have been very helpful for me. I have an issue where I think I transfer my weight too early. I have my weight on my front leg as I lift my knee up and out but it seems like as my weight moves forward it closes my front leg and impedes my ability to extend it. As a result my board does not level at the apex but well after. When I watch your ollie your front leg appears opened the entire time you are in the air.
    Can you comment on your weight distribution during your ollie?
    Where is your weight as you jump?
    Where is your weight as you pop?
    Where is your weight as you slide?
    When do you transfer your weight forward?
