Love the video! Appreciate the history, research, and commentary, as opposed to just another recipe video. This has been my favorite cocktail channel on TH-cam lately.
Wicked history lesson! I knew Pussers were pushy on the trademark but had no idea they had little to no influence on the recipe and name. Definitely gives me a new perspective on the brand. Thanks again for the wonderful content!
We did basically this same experiment (including one that had equal parts orange/pineapple). The results were surprising and varied: Ultimate Painkiller 1½ oz Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum 1 oz Lemon Hart 1804 Demerara Rum 1 oz Coconut Creme (Coco Real) 3 oz Pineapple Juice 1 oz Orange Juice Mrs Mai Tai’s Painkiller 1½ oz Hamilton 86 Demerara Rum 1 oz Lemon Hart 1804 Demerara Rum 1 oz Coconut Creme (Coco Real) 1 oz Pineapple Juice 2 oz Orange Juice
I've also made Painkillers with Pussers Gunpowder Proof and also with Smith & Cross Jamaica rum, both were better than the standard issue Pusser's or 86 proof Demerara.
I'll have to run through these and feature one in the next Painkiller episode. And I promise to do it blind because otherwise I'd choose Mrs Mai Tai's. I'll keep an open mind.
@@makeanddrink It's basically the same as yours, though I split the rums and used a little extra. I too felt 4 oz pineapple was too much but was shocked I liked the heavier pineapple version better.
Your Ultimate is my recipe as well except I sub the Lemon Hart for Smith and Cross and will sub the Orange Juice for Tangerine if I have it on hand. I love this drink but mostly for nostalgia reasons (spent a good bit of time bumming around the BVIs in my youth).
I like the version from PKNY. Get the cocktail paired down to right amount of juice so you know you're actually tasting a cocktail. Obviously I bump up the recipe to 2 oz of rum. 1 1/2 oz Virgin Islands Rum 3/4 oz Coconut Cream 1 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice 3/4 oz Orange Juice Nutmeg
My recipe is 1 and 1/2 oz of oj 3 and 1/2 pineapple 1/4 oz lime 1oz cream of coconut 1oz Appleton estate 1oz Coruba and 1/2 oz smith and cross and do cinnamon and nutmeg on top
Painkillers were the drink of choice at my wedding with Pussers Rum and Diplimatico in full display. Essential we have photos….no one remembers the wedding 🤣😂😆😎
I use the trademarked recipe, but cut the pineapple juice down to 2oz. For the rum I use a mix of any 2 or 3 rums (1oz each) One of my favourite cocktails that way! I will say that I only recently started using Pussers, and I think it works great when mixed with another rum (I use the gunpowder strength) Great video
I love Pusser‘s version! It gives me hints of dried fruits and Malaga ice cream. The orange juice does give me a little more acidity but I urge anyone to try it with blood orange juice. I tried the original piña colada and found it quite boring and the painkiller became the preferred alternative for me. Both these drinks don’t try to put the rum up front and that’s perfectly fine as it’s a tropical tiki drink and a lot of people just want a juicy cocktail rather than a stiff drink. There are countless other options if you want something stronger ✌️
I made a Painkiller the other day using a blend of 1:1:1 Plantation 3 to Goslings to Smith and Cross. I like it. I used freshly squeezed orange juice and grated both nutmeg and orange zest on top. This brought out some orange notes from that supporting player. Not something I'd do every time but a nice addition I think.
I do like a painkiller and I have my own recipe. I usually use Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof. This was interesting but I’d like to see a comparison of everything the same except the rum.
We did our honeymoon in the BVI 23 years ago and I had the original. The bartender had the juices and coconut cream pre-mixed and told me the OJ to Pineapple was more like 1:1. Also they used 2oz of white rum and 1/2oz dark rum float. Now our go to pool drink for the summer is 1:1 oj and pineapple (about 3 cups each in a 2L insulated bottle) and about a 1/2 cup plus a little coconut cream. We blend it before putting in the bottle. We take Plantation Pineapple aged rum over ice and top with the mixer. Stir with your finger. 😂
I found this cocktail recipe in Beachbum's Grog Log. His called for the Gunpowder proof version of Pusser's. Having tried all 3 rums, the 2 you taste tested and the Gunpowder proof. I always reach for the Gunpowder proof now. Night and day difference between all 3 when you go Gunpowder proof... In my humble opinion. Really great video! Glad I subscribed!
I made painkillers last night, following the Pussers recipe. I didnt have orange juice so I used grapefruit juice but I'm not sure I could tell the difference. Goes to show how little the orange juice is doing in that drink
I drank several of the original version from the Soggy Dollar Bar in the mid-80s. I've been pissed at Pusser's arrogance for as long as I can remember. If I'm in a tiki or tropical bar, I'll order, "make me your version of a Painkiller and don't use Pusser's." I'll never send a penny their way. Cheers!
Well done. Tried the OG tonight. It’s too orange forward for me. I think I’ll like it if I swap the pineapple and OJ specs. Will try that next time. And use a more flavorful rum than Cruzan. I’ve never been a huge fan of the trademarked spec but I think I’ll be able to hone it more to my liking starting from the OG.
It is hot today, and I live closer to ocean than you, I think.. but for the drink.. I don't like pussers because it gives me a headache, I put 1oz OFTD and 1oz demerara rum. Also, instead of OJ, I put .5oz lime juice.
RIP, PKNY. I am 100% with you on the ethics of this cocktail and on how best to make one for home use. I was hoping for a bit more from the Cruzan Single Barrel when I made one with it a while back, but I still prefer it over Pusser's. I'm honestly not the biggest fan of Painkillers, but I thought the version in Tropical Standard was pretty damn good (big surprise there /s). "Who of has has not done that ourselves?" Lmao.
Screw Pussers! This is the first drink I shook that made me go "Oooooh i get it" so I'm especially bitter that they trademarked the name of a cocktail they have no claim to, just so they could push their just passable rum. My spite for them only doubled because of a bar owner I worked for who was a weird british navy larper (he was just a huge dork and had never been in the navy) who was obsessed with the brand.
Thanks for the video! I was able to get to the Soggy Dollar by foot, need to crawl under a few fences 😊. They handed me a glass and a bottle of Pusser’s. You poured as much rum as you like and they made the drink!
Thanks! Great controversial topic and presentation. Thank you for asking and answering the tough questions regarding this drink. It’s one of my go to drinks. I recently acquired a bottle of soggy dollar dark rum to try. Wonder what I’m gonna make? 😉
Great to see we are getting into Painkiller season. Interesting you went with more OJ (2oz) vs pineapple juice (1oz) in the "original". Most specs I have tried build with more pineapple than OJ. I will give the original a try.
The best Painkiller is the one that washes the salt water out of your mouth after the swim in to the Soggy Dollar. BTW, many people take a dinghy in to the beach, so they don't swim.
Hmm been a while since I’ve had a painkiller. Found them too sweet but quite fun. Was serving them without booze for the younglings and they enjoyed them.
The trademark only protects the consumer if they are buying a branded, manufactured product. There is nothing about a trademark that prevents a bar from adulterating a trademarked drink.
The Painkiller bar saga kinda of proves otherwise. Likewise, if a bar or better yet a large chain restaurant advertised a Pinkiller or Dark N Stormy and stated they used another rum I would imagine they would have issues. No one is complaining or railing against these brands because we can’t make our own ready to drink canned Painkiller.
Not all press is good press if talking about them leads to people not buying their rums. I think they do well with the crowd that doesnt know the story. The ones that just buy into them as creating the Painkiller.

@chrisgeorge2717 ok but serious questions… how is 2 oz of orange juice and 1 of pineapple so much worse than 4 oz of pineapple and 1 of OJ? This is what I don’t understand. Both fruit juices that lack acidity. Much more of it in the Pussers version.
@makeanddrink fair enough. I guess personally, I don't care for the oj that much at all. I'll squeeze a fresh 1 oz in, but again, I'm more about the cream of coconut. Why? I guess because I feel like in St Maarten, it was very rich and creamy. 4 oz of pineapple is probably too much too.. which is why I guess I reduce it and add more coconut.

Cafe Colada
1.5oz (45ml) pussers rum
0.5oz banana liqueur
0.5oz coffee liqueur
1.5oz (45ml) pineapple juice
0.75oz (22ml) cream of coconut (preferably Coco Lopez)
0.5oz (15ml) fresh orange juice
0.25oz (7ml) fresh lime juice
Nutmeg
