    This is a video requested by a friend of mine for educational purposes and it shows a high neck shot placement and reaction to the shot.
    It is not a shot placement for everyone and should only be made at sensible ranges. If I ever neck shoot (very rarely) it is a high neck shot when an animal is facing towards me or facing away from me. I never shoot when the animal is side on or make low neck shots. I also don't head shoot deer.

    Ten film zrobiłem na prośbę kolegi, który prowadzi szkolenia młodych myśliwych. Strzał w kark nie jest dla każdego i nie w każdych warunkach. Przede wszystkim trzeba znać swoje możliwości i mieć stabilną pozycję. Jest to strzał, który oddaję dosyć rzadko.
    Jeżeli już strzelamy w kark, to według mnie powinno się to robić możliwie wysoko (sarnę w "krawat") i tylko gdy zwierzę jest na sztych, lub zwrócone do nas tyłem. Z reguły nie strzelam w kark do boku (duże ryzyko ranienia w przypadku nawet niewielkiego ruchu), ani nisko.

    Personally shot placement always is dependent on whether I'm hunting private ground or public ground. Heart shots (meat saving shots) track em for 40-50 yards are for private ground. High shoulder drop em right now (destroy both shoulders) are for public grounds.

      @pubecollecter6961 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it suffer. I want to get into hunting and I hear a heart shot is a good shot. I got a 30-06 rifle I’ve seen heart, high shoulder, high neck and head shots. Besides a head shot which one would u say would cause it the least amount of pain

    • @TheMrMused
      @TheMrMused ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pubecollecter6961 High shoulder, when placed correctly and with an appropriate caliber and a polymer/soft tip, disrupts the brachial plexus which drops the animal and disconnects much (if not all) of the nerve bundle behind it. While I'm not aware of any studies involving pain levels vs shot placement, this does seem to be one of the better placements. Keep in mind that pain is only so much when masked with a huge adrenaline dump. I prefer to minimize the stress/panic the animal feels. In heart/lung shots, they tend to run for a little bit before exsanguination is sufficient for them to drop (the process of bleeding out also reduces oxygen supply to the brain, which should reduce the awareness of pain). High neck and head shots are low-percentage/minimal room for error shots. They're effective when placed well, but very dependent on accuracy.

      As said - near perfect educational videos! Thanks for taking your time to make these videos.
      I do a lot of research my self about shotplacement and terminal ballistics. If you have the time you should explore the “forward/front chest shot”. Place the bullet 1 inch in front of the frontleg. This will bring you into the autonomic plexus wich again gives you great effect (deer drops).

    I have been hunting for years. Killed a total of 5 deer. My dad is always talking about what each caliber will do, especially now as we are going into rifle season here in mid Missouri, but neither he nor I realized how little difference in shot placement it takes to change the way the animal goes down. Thank you for the insight. I will keep it in mind.

    That was my preferred shot back when i hunted a lot....shot probably 3 or 4 dozen with a .222 bruno fox....nice thing about placing the shot there is that with fast expanding bullets you either hit it and kill it (due to so much important stuff in such a small area) or miss it entirely...even a shot that wasn't center broke the neck due to hydrostatic shock

    I am no expert, but in my younger days I shot 6 deer. I shot 5 of them in the neck and they dropped just like those in your video. One I shot in the chest, and she ran just a few strides. I know people say heart/lung is a better shot, but I just feel like it is more humane to shoot them in the neck if you have that shot available to you.

    Great video, proof is in the results! You obviously train, most American hunters from my experience in the field with them call going out the weekend before opening day shooting a few rounds at target and calling it good while spending the rest of the year never training. Boggles one's mind and they wonder why they missed or fired 3 to 5 rounds at a deer under 100 yards, gut shot or any other poor placed shot. Not that I haven't had my bad shots either but with training it helps increase your success of better placement where you want to hit with confidence. Seen it many a season.

    My Father did this a several times and it worked always great. BUT some day the buck turned just a little bit at the moment the shot broke. So the neck (bone) was not hit. He only hit the trachea and the animal did not go down! This was the last time he did this and i would never try!

      AnonymAlkoholiker - I don’t know if regulation is necessary. I’d hope a hunter wouldn’t take a shot they weren’t sure of - if for no other reason than you miss and you might not get a second chance. On the other hand I saw a video recently where a buck was shot - and hit in the neck but got away and survived. The hunters got him the next season

    It seems like some if the most common shots in the UK and such areas are head shots and neck shots.. impressive especially considering the smaller deer. As you probably know most hunters in the US aim for the heart or lungs. Not sure why neck shots at least aren't more common. But I have messed up headshots due to the fact I do not have a varmint rifle, ended up hitting it in the jaw and had to finish it with one to the lungs and never tried again. I've pulled it off plenty if times but the sudden and often movement of the head sometimes catches you off gaurd. Even the "varminter."

    Got a white tail in the neck Sun. morning with 223. Same situation, head-on shot. I have some really great rifles and I'm a fairly decent shot (former Army sniper). Calling certain calibers or shots to take as unethical as a blanket statement isn't fair. What I can pull off and what the hunter with less experience can make happen isn't the same. All hunters/shooters are only as good as their level of skill, (and to a lesser degree, their equipment) which they get from experience, which is only obtainable through practice.

    I remember back 10 years ago, I got a shot at a large whitetail doe from 100 yards out with my .58 muzzleloader. I have never seen damage to a whitetail deer like that one did. When the bullet hit, which was a 425 grain Minie ball, it shattered the vertabrae, cut the artery and shredded the windpipe. I also had to dispatch a whitetail deer that had been hit by a car. I shot it with a .357 Magnum (safely off the road with nothing behind it but trees) below the head into the neck. The deer died instantly.

      With front neck shots don't aim too high as your bullet is usually sighted high at 100m and can cause you to hit the bottom jaw unintentionally. Aim about 4inches below the chin. For side on the high neck shot is better as there is very little muscle around the spine, Unlike a bottom of neck shot with lots of muscle hiding the exact spine position and can cause you to miss the spine.(the animal will still drop but will then get up and run off if not spot on).

    Great shooting! Neck shot is of course the best if undisturbed/calm roe. In my area they are always acting very skittish, which making a neck shot difficult to manage. I’ve done all my roes (12) right behind the shoulder, the ”classic” way. Thnx to you, I’ll be training at this placing, onwards. It will give me more options and possibilities👍 Thanks for sharing.

      Btw, I’ve recently started using Lapua Naturalis 140gr (6,5x55). New rifle, new caliber, wanted to try something new. Shot 1 roe with that ammo and it worked great. Went right thrue the lungs, leaving a 2cm enter and exit hole. Made a somersault by the hit and ran 25 meters. Have you tried naturalis? What do you use? The naturalis suprised me with 2,5 cm gap on target at 100 meters. Well, maybe the rifle should be rewarded as well☺️

    good video mate!
    i live in Finland and i hunt moose here. i have thougth about taking shot like this but my worst fear is that bullet changes direction before damaging the spine and only wounding animal badly. so i prefer to wait until target animal turns and shows its side where are big vitals, lungs and heart. as you may know shooting from front to chest will blow guts quite badly.

    • @RoestalkerCoUk
      @RoestalkerCoUk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any shot can go wrong, this one as well. But sometimes it is the only shot you can get... If it is up to your shooting abilities, then why not? If I have a choice I also go for broadside heart/lungs. This video was just to show there is an option like that, and as you say front side chest shot is just crap and makes no sense at all in my book. In such situation I would always go for such high neck shot or just leave it. Thanks for watching.

    • @karelianguy9917
      @karelianguy9917 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i have watched your videos and i have to say that you are a great shooter, and always yours shot seems to be dead on.
      Do you use shotsticks and what position is your favorite?
      Here we hunt moose mostly "driven" with dogs, (or exactly its illegal to use dog wich barks when it doesnt see the animal, and dog has always try to stop the animal excluding dachshund or other dogs that arent taller than 28 cm when hunting moose, white taildeer and roedeer) so for that reason situations are fast, shots are taken freehanded and targets are moving (sometimes fast) so it is hard to shoot cleanly to small vital area such brains or spine.
      some old folks in our hunting group has said that if moose comes from front sligtly upper than you, shoot to place where you would stab it to drain bloods out,then it should not hit guts and it would drop in place but i haven't had opportunity to try that

    • @RoestalkerCoUk
      @RoestalkerCoUk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mainly stalk deer and 90% of my shooting is from a standing position using sticks (twin or quadsticks). The rest is high seat or driven hunts. I would not attempt neck shots free hand on a driven hunt, these are only from a stable position. We have quite a lot of moose in Poland, but cannot shoot them, hope we are allowed to hunt them again as the numbers built up considerably.

      RoeStalker hoping for best! moose population grew a lot in between 70's and 80's when forestry grew in finland and mooses got food from woodsaplings. now moose's are protected in eastern parts of Finland because growing population of wolfs eat their fawns and moosepopulation in there is endangered. and goverment won't give egnough tags to hunt wolfs.

    • @teacheng3795
      @teacheng3795 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suspect that the twitching you saw after the deer dropped is what leads you to think that they were suffering. A bullet through the front of the neck that drops the deer this way will destroy tissue, hit neck arteries, and break the spinal cord too. All motors cut and all consciousness gone.
      The kicking is just a reflex that occurs when the nerves are severed, like wiring short circuiting, with the signals not knowing where to go as they weaken and cease. These couple of seconds twitching therefore don't indicate suffering.

      +PE J There is always a risk of a ricochet, never happened to me in such a shot yet. I would not recommend it when shooting from a high seat because of that risk, much better from a high seat is to try when a deer is facing directly away from you. I dont neck shoot when the deer is side on, always facing towards/away. It is not a shot for everyone or in every condition, just need to be careful and remember any shot can go wrong...

    I must ask, why do you never go for head shots? I was always taught to try and line up my shots to the space between the eye and the ear, because it resulted in instantaneous death and practically no wasted meat.
    Nice shooting, by the way.

    • @RoestalkerCoUk
      @RoestalkerCoUk  8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +FreedomFiend I am not a fan of head shooting and I have couple of reasons. It is generally quite difficult shot and the one that very often can go wrong. It is not always a case of instant death or clean miss. I found an injured deer I had to put out its misery couple of years ago and it was not a pretty sight. th-cam.com/video/he8CnJ20sPI/w-d-xo.html
      I also always want a trophy, so no head shooting males and filming all my outings I want an animal to be presentable on film/photo, head shot animals usually are very messy...
      I do head shoot wild boar, but hardly ever deer as deer's head is very mobile and risky in my opinion.
      I know my limits and try only go for the shots I am 100% comfortable with.

    Very nice placement! As a recommendation (and I'm sure I'm not alone) it would be awesome to know the yardage of the shots. Also grab a phone attachment for your binos or spotting scope. Life changer. And won't have the recoil effect the video. Ps. Whats the point of the suppressor? You're dead on, not like you need a second round :p Great vids man!

      +Daryl Hatheway A friend of mine running a scheme for your hunters asked me for a high shoulder shot video as it was for an urban deer, so I did it. Then he asked me for a typical heart/lung to contast it with a heart/lung... so I also did the neck shot, just to complete the series. I dont head shot deer or do any other "texan" thingy so there you have it. I hope it helps any newbie out, I had to figure this out myself :-) The last one is not even for me I am a horrible shot

    Hi Roe Stalker. I've only ever chest shot deer. I have been considering neck shooting. Would you always advise high neck not low and as you said, you never shoot side on due to being unsure of the spine. For a roe that dosent have the mane of a red stag would you consider side shots or not. Also shooting straight on so close to the head, are you not ever concerned that you could pull the shot and shoot only a few inches up and you would be taking off their jaw...? All the best from the UK! Cheers Chris

    • @RoestalkerCoUk
      @RoestalkerCoUk  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Chris, I also chest shoot 90% of the time and neck shoot only when have to dispatch wounded animal or am very steady and sure of my capabilities. In my opinion facing towards or away is always better than side on. Even on a roe especially low neck shot can be cocked up, you can see this video where I simply pulled the shot. It ended up well as the buck bled quite quickly, but the bullet didnt break the spine and it easily couldve been a long track... After that experience I rather avoid side on neck shots. th-cam.com/video/fJl7G2Cb2fk/w-d-xo.html
      It is much easier to take the jaw shooting side on, but yes there still is a danger of shooting to high and a quickly expanding bullet might not hit the brain and disintegrate on face/nose/jaw area.
      Neck shooting is not for everyone, you have to be a capable shot, but sometimes it is the only shot you get. Sometimes deer come straight at you, spot you, straight neck looking at you trying to make out what you are before running off. Or sometimes you bump a deer that runs and then stops and looks back. Most of the people will pass on these opportunities when they cant take a chest shot, but if you know your limits, feel confident, you can try a neck shot in such situations.
      ATB Greg

    Great shots, what was the distance and caliber you used? This is a big advantage over top shoulder shots as they drop dead on the spot, but the distance and orientation of the animal is limiting. I was successful with side lower neck shots at up to 150 m, they drop dead on the spot too.

    • @RoestalkerCoUk
      @RoestalkerCoUk  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Andrzej Anaroo These were mainly .223 and .243. In my opinion these make sense when you have stable position and an animal is facing directly towards/away. I rather avoid low neck shots and when side on I go for heart/lungs or high shoulder if runners are a problem. Thanks for watching

      RoeStalker thanks a lot brother. Been struggling trying to decide on what ammo to use. I'm torn between the vmax or the Barnes tsx. I will be taking nothing but neck shots on deer so I figured the vmax would do just fine.

    • @RoestalkerCoUk
      @RoestalkerCoUk  7 ปีที่แล้ว

    when the animal bleeds out his mouth or nose from shoulder shots, is it positive con that you hit the lungs? Also is there any concern for touching these wild animals with bare hands like the fur, blood, insides? Can't these animals have rabies or virus or something that can infect you? wether its a rabbit or dear or bear or any animal commonly hunted.

    • @RoestalkerCoUk
      @RoestalkerCoUk  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you shoot through the shoulders you will hit the lungs.
      Deer are usually quite healthy and there is nothing to be caught from them, apart from ticks and it is a danger of lyme disease. Foxes are different matter and I dont handle them without gloves.
