58C really that sauna was cold as a fridge, it needs to be at least 70-80c.
Haha woops… it felt super hot 🥵 our Scottish skin must not be used to the Finnish sauna heat 😂
@@AshAndDan. I've enjoyed a nice 90C° sauna in a hotel/holiday resort in Oban, Scotland so being Scottish is no excuse 😄 But now that I think about it, my Scottish friends looked at me like I was a crazy person when I told them what temperature the sauna was 😂 They went in when it was still warming up and like 50-65C°. I refused to go with them because it was too cold at that point 😂
I am Finnish and I enjoy a 60C Sauna to start with.
80°C is a normal family sauna temperature, 100°C you get in a proper wood fired sauna.
That too depends pretty much on sauna (and the saunor). But I've enjoyed anywhere from 60 to well over 100 degrees, but the feel is very different in small and large saunas. A big smoke sauna with maybe 110 degrees still feels relatively ''soft'' and nice with good airflow, while in a very small electric sauna, I don't think I'll last long, especially when throwing water. - another Finn... :D
That was a correct way to do sauna and rolling in the snow. Enjoy your stay!
Haha glad I got it right 😀 it was great to get back into the warm sauna after a very cold roll in the snow 😂 hope you enjoyed the video!
I agree, this was the first video that I’ve seen, but going so far as rolling on the snow after a sauna, I'm subscribing just out of respect :)
Haha thank you 😎 legend!
I am 47y old finn.. but never rolled in snow after sauna or in between steams :) so.. its not mandatory :) nor is ice swimming :) then again.. I am from Helsinki and one who has never been in Lappland :D
Not quite coz you suppose to go all naked in the sauna. Also its called Sauna, not Soona
Looks like you had a great time! Just 58° in the sauna (SOWna 😉) though? What are you? Swedish?! 😂
It was amazing thank you! 😀 haha it did heat up eventually 😂 not sure we can handle Sauna as hot as the Finns seem to have them though 😂
You can steer the sled or "pulkka" as we finns say, by dragging arm in ground. Draggin left arm makes sled turn left... Sleding in deep snow... Well the snow is more than half of fun.
It was great fun! The snow was a little deep but added to the fun I guess 😂 thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed! 😀
One thing when sledding... Put your feet in the sled, otherwise your feet will keep digging the snow onto your face all the time 😅 Then try to control the speed with your feet only at times if you have to. Use your hands to steer and slow down the sled a bit. It is better if you only steer with your hands, try to keep the sled stable and go! It can of course pick up some speed but there is not snow on your face 😊 The more speed the more fun if you are good at steering 😅
Good tips! It was much easier to sled on the road at the time we were there as the snow was very deep on the sledding track as we were there off season! I’d love to go back when the track was open properly to test our speed and skills 😎😂 thanks for watching 👍
Great video! So fun to watch your adventures at Saariselkä. Thanks!
Thanks for your kind words! We are glad you enjoyed watching 😄 we had a great time in Saariselkä! Would definitely like to return again one day in peak winter season
At 11:03 i got a very visceral flashback from childhood having the fresh flaky snow splash on my face at high speed. I'm 44 and laughed like a kid. What a great video! Oh the terror in your eyes just an instant before the splash, I had totally forgotten that glorious feeling! Thanks! Greetings from Helsinki,. Haven't had my hat frozen in probably 30 years :)
Haha glad you enjoyed the video 😀 it’s great how much fun we had on the toboggan track even as adults- sometimes it’s fun to be a big kid again! Thanks again for your lovely comment 😀
Now you got to the real Lapland. The locals there say that only the northernmost municipalities are real Lapland and Rovaniemi is in southern Finland :D :D
There was much snow and I think that was what you were looking for. I have never been that north in wintertime, but summer and autumn only.
It was amazing! Saariselkä really is an awesome place 😀 you should definitely visit in the winter time if you get the chance! We would love to go back and try skiing ⛷️ hope you enjoyed the video! 😀
@@AshAndDan. I have enjoyed all your videos that I have watched so far. By the way, this week we got snow here in the southern Finland. There's not very much, just maybe 3 centimeters, but it's more than nothing.
Thank you and glad you are enjoying the videos 😀 oh really? I’m sure you will get plenty more snow through the winter!
@@AshAndDan. here in south the snow melts away usually this time, so we will see. The "final snow" that stays till april comes typically around christmas.
Thank You for reminding me about my childhood and the things I loved ❤😊
We really enjoyed the toboggan track as it is something we hadn’t done since we were kids either! 😀 thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the vlog😀
6:55 A little correction: you were not "in the middle of the Arctic Circle" but in the middle of the arctic Finland :)
The Arctic Circle is situated a lot more south, runs through the Rovaniemi region, the circle marks the southernmost latitude at which you can experience the polar night in winter and the midnight sun in summer. The further north you progress, the more pronounced these effects become. You can say the Arctic Circle is the gate to the arctic region.
That’s really interesting! I think it’s amazing how you can experience both the midnight sun and the polar night there! We would love to explore more of the region for sure! Thanks for watching 😀
Lol you need to lean back and keep your feet up or you fill get a face full of show, as you experienced. It's still fun even for us adults!
Haha I tried 😂 it was off season so the snow hadn’t been flattened properly so it was quite difficult conditions! A lot of fun though! Even as adults 👍 hope you enjoyed the video 😀
The little bird is called " kuukkeli" , very common in northern Finland . And everybody must be able to do a fire if they dry wood and matches . I hope you enjoy your time here in Finland. Suomi Perkele 😂😂😂🇫🇮
Kuukkeli
@@House_of_Caine yeah that's what I almost wrote😆😆😆
Interesting! We didn’t know the name of the bird but thanks for letting us know! Ha even we managed to light the fire 😂 we loved Finland! Thanks for watching 👍
Lovely video ❤I was born at Kemijärvi, not far from Rovaniemi, now about 350 kilometers south from there, Oulu city which I also love. I've seen a lot reindeers, snow, northern lights or aurora borealis, so maybe I have forgotten the beauty what we have.
You have a lot of beauty in Finland 🇫🇮 especially in Lapland! Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video 😀
Great video! What an awesome halo you managed to film @25:37! I don't know if you even knew, but those can be really beautiful phenomenons. I'm glad you have enjoyed your stay in Finland!
We absolutely loved our time in Finland! Thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the vlog 😀
Moving water doesn't freeze
Nice fact! Thanks for watching 😀
Dear Ash and Dan, could you tell tell us please the name or a contact of this accomodation you were staying in in Saariselkä? Thank you once again for your great video!
Hello! The name of the accommodation is Topstar Saariselkä. Their website is www.topstar.fi/en/ 😀 we stayed in cabin 1. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching 👍
@@AshAndDan.Thank you very much! 🎄 🎅 💫
Correction. The north pole is in the middle of the arctic circle. Not Saariselkä. 😆
Ooops! What an amazing place Saariselkä is though 😀 thanks for watching and hope you enjoyed the video!
@@AshAndDan. It was great. Looking forward for the next one.
About auroras. If it’s snowing, like when you first went out to look for them, it's going to be cloudy. And if it’s cloudy, it means you cannot see the sky. And if you cannot see the sky, well… :) But, we’re a developed nation, and we have solutions for these problems, just ask your nearest Finnish friend about an app that can inform you about the earth and space weather and alarm you when its time to go out and look at the sky. :) Locationwise, you need to be up north to have a reasonable chance to see something during a short visit, like Rovaniemi at minimum.
Yes, so many clouds meant we didn’t see them again but we are very happy we got to see them in Rovaniemi at least! 😊 thanks for watching!
😂😅❤❤Congrats! You have passed the Finnish "citizenship" test❤!! You should stay and work for Santa, cause your accent is so cute and adorable❤. Have a great/safe journey❤❤❤
Haha glad we passed 😂 we would have loved to have stayed longer in Finland! Thanks for your kind words and hope you enjoyed the video! 😀
if you write to santa and write for the address "Santa Claus" it is goes to Santa in Finland where Santa is live place in Rovaniemi
you cant see northern lights if there are clouds..
Yeah it’s a pity it was cloudy a few nights when we were there 😞 we did manage to see them once atleast! Hope you enjoyed the video 😀
Saariselkä is not in the north. You are in southern Lapland. The real ski resorts are further north.
Saariselka is not north? 😯 where can you go skiing higher than Saariselka? We will put this on our list to visit next time as we love the remoteness of Lapland 😀 thanks for watching!
He got it wrong. Saariselkä is indeed very North so you got it right! 😊
Nice. 😊 a Finn here…just one request. Sauna is the only Finnish word out there in the world. Ask someone to tell you how you really pronounce it. 🙏🏻 kiitos. Btw, nice job on Saariselkä. 😊
Thank you for your comment! We are so glad you enjoyed you enjoyed our video. We only learned after our previous video how to pronounce sauna it properly and we now know (for future) how to say it 😀 (this was filmed before we were told!)
Another Finn here.. who cares how it is pronounced as long as the word is understood what is means - in English it is often pronounced like in the video and every one understands it. For non English speaking Finns, well, they should have learned in the school already, so no excuse there!
Yet Another Finn Here: Exactly, as long as you're understood, prefect pronounciation doesn't matter, vocabulary is king.
In my age group (old, 40++), we were basically always taught the english grammar basics over the vocabulary. In our culture, this often leads to the fear of using it at all, unless you're doing it perfectly. Und lass mich nicht mit Deutsch anfangen eller svenska. :)
