Happy December 1st! ❄️ Here's a weird and spooky (and literally *horny*) story from D. H. Lawrence...set in wintery Hampstead one Christmas night...
It seems a bit like mr Lawrence had a surfeit of adjectives to use and threw them all into the story
Proving a bit of a controversial choice, this one... Ah well. I liked it 🙄
I was thinking “wow this is a lot of horniness and spends a lot of time ruminating on the sexual power women have over men for a ghost story” and then I looked at the screen. D H Lawrence! It all makes sense 😂 I didn’t know he wrote ghost stories. It’s interesting to see how the sensuality of his style translates 🤔

I read The Rainbow when I was 14. Lawrence tackles the intricacies of human nature in fine detail; it was the first 'adult' book I read and I remember pausing a lot just to contemplate and savour what he was saying. I read a couple more of his afterwards, and enjoyed them, but didn't care for Sons and Lovers.
I used to visit a huge second hand bookshop and buy random old books based mostly on the look of them and their titles - really old books fascinated me. I bought some real rubbish, but also (accidentally) bought some gems: Umberto Eco, Lawrence, Wilkie Collins, Huxley, A J Cronin.
Shall listen to this in a mo while cleaning my aquarium.
By the way, I had a go at recording my writing group homework with my own sound effects using Audacity. Let's just say my admiration and respect for your craft has gone WAY off the scale... ❤
I think this story is the most peculiar of any ive ever heard!
We read it at school,
Our teacher also read it out at the end of term
( she obviously adored it)
When i read The Classics at Uni
We studied it, ive heard other narrators on utube deliver it.
And, here you are doing it, a fine job, as is your want & did it splendidly
However! Im still at sixes & sevens with the whole kit & kaboodle!
Its so abstract & symbolic yet it doesn't amount to any great or small, sudden understanding or
Realisation for the listener!!
Ive never yet, not understood the meat & potatoes of any piece of literature, whether its a complex legal drama, an existentialist & angst ridden
Beatnik psycho-pop, or a Russian translation of pompous nihilism
Ive loved all of DH Lawrences books, so real & gutsy but this Last Laugh is, i think HIS last laugh, at US trying to fathom out his meaning or purpose, when he didn't know himself!
Hes just left it up to the listener to please themselves or make of it, what we will ...
On top of that, I really do not like this story at all.
It grates on me, thats my opinion
It always has, Always will.
Its only saving grace, is that Mr Jasper read it so well & gave it certain kudos.
So thank you for that.

Well I don't have my big book of Victorian literary symbolism by way of Edwardian hindsight on me, but on first listen I'd say this story could be boiled down to the more things change the more they stay the same. Specifically how the industrial revolution changed English society on the surface but underneath all the old issues of class and wealth are still there. It may also be coming down slightly on a more traditionalist side, but that's moy of a guess on my part.

Interaction, on tv etc about just ordinary people getting calls & texts from the phones/computers, of deceased loved ones! 😨
When the person makes enquiries
They find out the deceased persons phone has no charge & was boxed up or in a drawer at the family home...
I suppose alot of it makes sense
When one thinks about electrical energy, & there is some mind boggling things come up on the Physics programmes
I love this chap called
Prof Jim Al Kahlili, a British Astro Physicist, his videos are absolutely amazing & utterly understandable.
It doesnt matter if you dont understand Quantum Physics
As per the famous quote from

" If Quantum Physics doesnt terrify you, then you havent understood it"
Its just the new stuff they are discovering now, particularly
Involving electricity & the incredible new break throughs that could go a long way in explaining paranormal phenomena & communications from physical body dead people.
Alot of it is to do with Quantum Entanglement, which explains alot, if it proves to exist ...
Well, they theorised the Higgs Bosun principle, way back in the 1930s & 40s & it was only recently proved to exist courtesy of the
Large Hadron Collider at Cern

I love this story exactly because of its being peculiar! Queasy and unsettling is how I'd describe it.
it kind of defies unpacking, which I think is where much of its power lies.

Dear old Lawrence, always at his best when getting down to the various forces of nature (cough). I haven't read this one for years and I was delighted to be reminded of it. So much left for the reader to fill in the gaps and I rather like that. When I was studying Lawrence I found his repetition irksome but over the years I have come to appreciate his writing so much more. Thanks so much for this sublime rendering of one of his strangest tales.

Ooh, hello......perfect timing, tea and toast and you!!
The atmosphere in this was FANTASTIC. So damn clever. We don't get to 'see' any monsters or demons, but it's every bit as horrifying as if we did. The club foot, Miss James's returned hearing, creepy as hell. The whole story from start to finish filled me with a curious sense of isolation.
I would never have guessed D H Lawrence as the author, except in maybe one or two places.
You did this little masterpiece real justice, Jasper. Loved it. Thank you 💕

Everything can change at any time and you’d be left with no explanation, and if blame for it were to be assigned to some entity , when reason is completely lacking, surely they would be laughing at the absurdity of it all, otherwise, why be so extraordinarily absurd to begin with? It really is remarkably extraordinary. What could you do ?, if everything changed in real time all around you with no possible explanation and was beyond comprehension with no alarm bells or obvious signs of danger or malice? Just a strange, gentle and bewildering cosmic horror gently snapping your mind. How absurd. Even regular mundane existence is just as bizarre. It’s almost comical really. I’d laugh but that would seem insane...but to not laugh would seem beyond insane. Extraordinary...

Thanks, Jasper. That was strange all right! And it turned out it was the second door of my advent calendar that I opened while listening to it. (But that's what comes of being in a time zone 8 hours ahead of the UK.)

I can't say I understand this one, but I like it. Someone certainly had a last laugh.
The return of Pan (instead of the Christian messiah) bringing us closer to our animal natures and sweeping aside the class/sex/religious mores of the day...or so I believe. Apparently Lawrence was a bit of a Great God Pan enthusiast, as was in vogue at the time.

My favorite as much as I have one by *D.H. Lawrence* is: *The Rocking~Horse Winner* ... it just stayed in my mind for some reason🤔he died young at age 44 ...that is sad. I like the idea behind this story; what one might encounter in the woods, at night or in the city for that matter. What might we encounter when in daylight these days is truly frightening. Creepy.... thanks *Jasper*

Has anyone offered explanations, maybe they are too deep for the average brain! I’m thinking some suppressed sexuality in her but how did that affect the two men. Love to hear someone’s theories. Great reading as usual, Jasper

The Great God Pan came back, desecrated the church, made people throw aside their Christian morals and give in to their animal impulses. In the end (perhaps) the policeman is transforming into a faun (perhaps into the physical form of Pan in order to ravish Miss James (the nymph)). Seeing Pan in the flesh in the daytime kills Marchbanks.
@@EnCryptedHorrorooooh so that was what was going on. There was a splattering of words like 'errect' and 'nymph' and 'do you want it', but I thought that was just Lawrence being his usual self (or my base humour) It helps to hear your expert explanation, I'm going to listen to it again now ❤
