Fascinating watching you catch these bees. Once a swarm went right over my head and I dropped to the ground, it sounded like a helicopter right above me. Quite the experience.
I very much like the way you handle Nature's gift. I've learned I've learned so much watching your videos they're wonderful. Thank you for sharing your interest
Yeah, I did beekeeping for one season. I really loved it and may do it again. But I don't think I could do that. Lol. Listening to the type of buzzing I was hearing in the video, those were a bunch of pissed off girls.
Thank you to all you hivers out there who are keeping the bees going. I've been hearing about how the bees are threatened to becoming extinct. God Bless You all and hugs!
They won't become extinct as long as there are bee keepers. And then there is the Africanized bees that are increasing in numbers. They're all over the south.
Seeing something like bees I normally only see in small numbers at once in this concentration is truly amazing. Makes you appreciate nature all the more.
I really admire your fearlessness. I've always loved nature and I remember as a child trying to pet bumble bees on that back and getting stung over and over again. Its sad that people don't care for honey bees the way they should be. It makes me happy that someone out there is educating people and saving bees! :)
+Closing the Loop I would imagine it would have to be a really powerful vacuum to maintain a strong enough suction up to that height? But I agree with the idea, its gotta be better than stepping on a few hundred & killing them, ,
+paulspydar I saw a video recently where they used a bee vacuum with an extension. It worked beautifully. That's not really that high. You take your truck and place it underneath and then with your extended vacuum and there you go. a ladder would help too
Wow I once had bees get mad at me like that, Had to change all the frames on a three brood chamber hive and no queen in it. Some places like the one in the video are just really hard to get at. I wonder have you ever thought of tying a frame of brood to a stick. Must give it a go myself though. But for sure a few frames of brood in the boxes might have calmed them down a bit hey. What do you think.
We have tied brood boxes to ropes and raised the box to a swarm but never a cluster this big. It works pretty well if you have some old dark comb in the box. Never tried with brood though. I think these were just pissed because they had just fallen 25 feet.
Ha probably yes. I would not be happy either :) The brood really makes them stick to a box. That is what I have found on numbers occasions anyways. Must give it a shot with the frame myself when I get a chance.
I have tied an old brood frame to an extendable pole and put it next to a high swarm. They ran right onto it. I suppose if you put a frame up there with a queen attached in a cage, you could raise them one at a time and load up a couple of pounds onto the frame at once and bring it down to put into a nuc.
That sure was an inspiring task! I was thinking too, but you could construct some sort of funnel with a tarp to put underneath and then have the bees fall down into a box with a queen inside.
because that is for hives to simulate the hive burning so instead of attacking intruders they gorge on honey but these bees don't have a hive so it doesn't work for them
I know there are some youtube "killer bee" guys that say that smoke is used to simulate the hive burning, but that is not true and those people, especially one, have no idea what they are talking about. Smoke is used to mask the alarm pheromones put out by alarmed bees to keep the hive from going into a panic and turbo boosting into attack mode. Guard bees excrete isopentyl acetate and other bees sense it and go into defense mode. It has nothing to do with the bees thinking that their hive is on fire. Bees have no defense against fire and to not attempt to "save the hive" or gorge on honey. It simply stops them from being able to communicate with each other, which is what promotes aggressive behavior.
I've never seen anything like this before, but it's so fascinating! I may be ignorant here, but wouldn't it be easier to climb up and smoke the whole swarm, let them fall onto the tarp and then scoop them into separate boxes?
Thanks for the info. Sure beats balancing on a ladder in the back of a pickup, cutting the branch off and sticking it in a cardboard box.which is how I did it last year.
I truly respect what you do, preserving and protecting bee populations. And while I’m fascinated by beekeeping, I don’t think I could get into a job or hobby where being stung repeatedly is the nature of the business.
Rhaine E. Daize Omg.. I laughed so hard at this comment as I was thinking these bee's look like they are going through Menopause while still suffering from PMS & they have come at "that time of the month & didn't bring any chocolate as a peace offering"!😂 I'm thinking " God Bless have mercy on their souls"!😂..🐝😇🙏🏼😇🐝
This a video on how Not to treat your bees. Walking on them, crushing them, getting them to release alarm pheromone, hell guys, you got them so stirred up they are acting like Africanized bees. I hope they didn't remember this rough treatment and become aggressive hives.
The way to get a rope over a high branch is to use string tied to an arrow, then pull the rope over with it :) I do not mean a shop bought bow, just a bamboo cane with something sutable as a bowstring willl do the job to fire a short cane over :) For a job like that you need a Space Suit. not a Bee Suit !

I love watching these videos... I'm not scared of bees but I respect that they can and will sting. The commentary made me laugh a few times and watching the bees rain down is so amazing.
Done this a bunch of times. The bees will follow the queen or the pilot bees. If the bees determine that the boxes you have set up are home they will call all the rest of the swarm with scent. I have mounted a bucket on a pole and caught less than 10% of the bees and placed them in a closed hive box and they drew the rest of the swarm in by dark. I would go back in the dark and move the hive to the location I needed it to be. A large swarm like this might take days to move into the hive boxes. Yes it is fun and i miss doing it now. God bless. I never got stung messing with swarms though.
I am very impressed that you got that rope over that limb, and I think it is funny that no matter how old we get, our parents still like to tell us what to do, and we still like to ignore it. ;)

Why not use smoke? Like have a couple 3 or 6 smoke cannisters around emmiting smoke?
because that is for hives to simulate the hive burning so instead of attacking intruders they gorge on honey but these bees don't have a hive so it doesn't work for them
Love to know the sting count on this venture. Must be worst ever
Either that or a pressure sprayer with sugar water with honey b healthy
I know there are some youtube "killer bee" guys that say that smoke is used to simulate the hive burning, but that is not true and those people, especially one, have no idea what they are talking about.
