The first time I saw JJW was so long ago a young David Bromberg was his guitar player. I loved that double album from 1977 that this was on it was “A Man Must Carry On” as I recall. But I also prefer the Guy Clark version. I saw him and Towns Van Zandt in Minneapolis years ago. Townes was so drunk he fell off his chair. But it was a great time.
This dude strikes me as an original, and funny as hell - but here he's not foolin' around, as he tips his hat to the shoulders he's standing on. Nothin' comes from nowhere.

I still prefer the original by the guy who wrote the song, Guy Clark. Maybe because of the great love he had for his wife, Susanna that he often mentions in his songs. Guy was a wonderful songwriter.

Did anyone notice he mixed up the last verse, Supposed to be "Oh Susanna dont you cry , loves a gift thats truly handmade, We've got something to believe in ,Don't ya' think it's time we're leavin' " He repeated the lyrics from the previous verse "I believe every word your sayin, keep on keep on playin" . Also used Guy Clarks original lyrics not JJW using "Oh Susanna" instead of "Oh my lady"so gave Guy a nod there...

How I was introduced to Guy Clark, the love of my life played his music for me because my name is Suzanne. I fell in love with his music as quickly as I fell in love with Bert! We were going to have "Like a Coat From The Cold" played at our wedding, but he died before that happened. Some days I listen to the songs we loved and remember back when I felt like I had it all! At least I had some very happy years, some people never get that.
great song... it took me over 6 months to figure out that this bar I went to in Brooklynn referenced this song... it was called Skinny Dennis... I knew it sounded familiar, but I was just in awe of eating roasting peanuts at a mock up Texas bar...
“Skinny” Dennis Sanchez was Guy Clark’s bass player, as well as a friend to everyone in that scene back in the 70’s. He died sometime in late 70’s/early 80’s from acromegaly, if I’m not mistaken.
Patty Joyce according to Wikipedia (take that for what it’s worth): Sanchez died onstage at age 28 of heart failure in Sunset Beach while playing for John Malcolm Penn.
End of that song gives a whole new level of endearment!!!! Let’s all take a moment for Tom Petty’s passing and how cool for Todd to add that whole end to a great Guy Clark song covered by many like Jerry Jeff walker one of Todd’s Favorite.
