it's easy to get so caught up in the hilarity of Todd's music and stories, and sort of forget what a wonderfully gifted songwriter he is. this is still heartbreaking all these years later. rip eddie
What a rich history of talent. Billy lost a couple fingers when he was young. Lost his son eddy who was a country guitar master. Todd had a heart attack on stage that almost took his life. Every time I see this performance you can hear and see the loss endured by him. Beautiful.
This is maybe the most heartbreaking performance I've ever seen. I usually hold it together until the end, when he quotes "Old Chunk of Coal." Then I just completely lose it. Just devestating.
My brother died of an overdose and Play a Train Song was the last song at his funeral...my heart fluctuates between these two songs when I think about him even now. I miss him so much. Thank you Todd for giving us these songs.
The stories we could share. I'm a big fan of both songs too. I used to play train song in a spot where the train would come through blaring at 4am. I held down the fort while my cousin was in rehab.. He fought hard, but I lost him later to careless law enforcement. Probably as the trains came through. I miss him a lot too. We miss em all a lot. The sweetest nicest person going through hell.
Brian ~ It sounds as if you have created a warm and loving home in your heart where your brother can reside in safe harbor at last. That is truly a gift. I am so sorry you suffered this terrible loss . . . we expect our siblings to live through our lifetimes with us. So painful when that expectation isn't met. Blessings 🕉️
First time I heard this song it stopped me dead in my tracks. Still does. Great recording, you can tell how hard it still hits him but he keeps singing.
Todd Snider - one of the kindest hearts in the biz we call show. You can be talented and create beauty without being the shallow fools we are handed daily as "stars". Carry on, barefoot bodhisattva! Walk in Peace, lil buddy!
Just no words to describe how this song makes me feel...much like a hard kick to the gut...the music world has never recovered from the loss of Eddy Shaver and it appears as if neither Todd or Billy Joe have either. RIP Eddy Shaver... god bless...
Todd really shines on this. I hated losing Eddie, but my heart truly went out to Billy Joe. The man has had a hard life. Thank you for posting it. God rest you, Eddie.
LULE ~ I couldn't agree more about what a wonderful artist Todd is, however, "This song moves me into a fuckin' corner" just moved right into my vocabulary! Thanks for that ! 🕉️
i have been a Todd Snider fan for 10 years, i admire his song writing so much..... from his humor to his heartfelt songs he is awesome...thanks for sharing
This has always been one of my favorite Todd songs. I never knew the story until now. Wow. I always thought it was about some girl or something. Amazing songwriter.
I know Todd don't know me from Adam but this song hits. Thing is Iet Todd in a tuckstop I worked. I am doing well now. I only fact is this was the fact. Todd if you read this thanks for the healing.
Wow, been listening to Todd for a few years now, not heard this before tho.... Soon as it finished I started it again!! Most emotional song I've ever heard!
I had the joy to sit down and eat a few tacos with Billy& Eddy about 1998 on St. Simons Island Georgia. They were playing at my cuzs club "Rafters". They sat with us for about an hour bullshittin' and cuttin' up. Oh yea we did burn a Tator before the night was over.
I hope you read theese, my other half for twenty yrs. is a blessed musician but cursed individual. We were at poodies to see billy Joe and we knew Willie was going to sit in. It was one of the most profound music events I ever witnessed. New Years Eve!
Lord. What a devastatingly haunting and beautifully emotional song. It's more than a song, really - more like a defining moment in someone's life. Todd can make me laugh and smile all day long, but sometimes, when I need a reminder to be kind or appreciate what I have in this life, moments like this reach out and touch me, and just break my heart. Now I gotta go hear the 'hallucinogenic drug football story' for a laugh. Thank you Todd!
Yellow rose, Waco moon Quit too late, you're gonna die too soon Woman with a needle and silver spoon Holed up singing the devil's tune Playing the blues, Paying your dues, Speeding your young life away I never will get over what I heard about you The first thing New Year's Day I can't say I felt so sad The truth is, I think I'm mad At the selfish way you left your dad When you know what a hard-luck time he's had Sleeping through A dream come true You just threw all that talent away I never will get over what I heard about you The first thing New Year's Day Ooh, slipping away Ooh, New Year's Day I threw the phone against the wall Falling apart when I got the call Went out walking with the weight of it all That's when it hit me like a waterfall I'm playing the blues, Paying my dues, Speeding my young life away. I never will get over what I heard about you The first thing New Year's Day. Ooh, slipping away Ooh, New Year's Day Yellow rose, Waco moon Quit too late, you die too soon To the bitter end, tried and true, Goodbye old friend, we'll be missing you
First head this running interstate with my dad. I was having a kip in the bunk when this came on . Not sure if we both knew each other heard it or we just held it,
I would really like to learn how to play this song but I'm not quite good enough to learn it by ear if anyone has a tab for It I would be very greatful

Chunk of coal reprise is the waterfall for me too. Very well done, Todd
He is holding back tears at times...a remarkable performance.
What an incredible song. Simply beautiful. It leaves me speechless. RIP Eddy.

First time I heard this song it stopped me dead in my tracks. Still does. Great recording, you can tell how hard it still hits him but he keeps singing.
He is amazing if for no other reason than you can really hear the emotion in his tone, and how it still affects him.
Todd Snider - one of the kindest hearts in the biz we call show. You can be talented and create beauty without being the shallow fools we are handed daily as "stars". Carry on, barefoot bodhisattva! Walk in Peace, lil buddy!
He does not walk in peace. Peace walks in him. 🤣 And on goes the stoned yodeler!
man... i can't remember when or how exactly i stumbled across todd's music but im sure as hell glad i did.
Same here, can't believe his talent.
RIP Billy Joe
Who could possibly dislike this song. Not make mention 5 people. You 5 are what's wrong with the world today
There's a lot of idiots out there; and many who never heard of Billy Joe, not to mention Townes Van Zandt who died on News Years Day.
I know what you mean. Unfortunately there's a lot of idiots out there. Best they don't understand a guy like Todd anyway; just not in their DNA.
maybe it's the fact that Eddy died that they do not like ?
Agree! Their loss.
My God have I gone and gotten old now? RIP to them Shaver Boys
Just no words to describe how this song makes me feel...much like a hard kick to the gut...the music world has never recovered from the loss of Eddy Shaver and it appears as if neither Todd or Billy Joe have either. RIP Eddy Shaver... god bless...

Yellow rose, Waco moon
Quit too late, you're gonna die too soon
Woman with a needle and silver spoon
Holed up singing the devil's tune
Playing the blues,
Paying your dues,
Speeding your young life away
I never will get over what I heard about you
The first thing New Year's Day
I can't say I felt so sad
The truth is, I think I'm mad
At the selfish way you left your dad
When you know what a hard-luck time he's had
Sleeping through
A dream come true
You just threw all that talent away
I never will get over what I heard about you
The first thing New Year's Day
Ooh, slipping away
Ooh, New Year's Day
I threw the phone against the wall
Falling apart when I got the call
Went out walking with the weight of it all
That's when it hit me like a waterfall
I'm playing the blues,
Paying my dues,
Speeding my young life away.
I never will get over what I heard about you
The first thing New Year's Day.
Ooh, slipping away
Ooh, New Year's Day
Yellow rose, Waco moon
Quit too late, you die too soon
To the bitter end, tried and true,
Goodbye old friend, we'll be missing you
makes me feel like i can't breathe...
First head this running interstate with my dad. I was having a kip in the bunk when this came on . Not sure if we both knew each other heard it or we just held it,
