Here because of Jason Kelce. For anyone else who found themselves here for the same reason, go check out John Prine. You're gonna love him. RIP John. Then check out the Avett Brothers. You're really gonna love them!
I clicked on comments because I wanted to say exactly the same thing, but you way beat me to it. Yes, RIP Guy, and I hope wherever he is it's a kitchen table in a well-worn house and there's just folks sitting together singing.
I've heard that God has many mansions. I hope one of them has a kitchen table with lots of chairs for all the friends, and and lots of guitars! Guy still had songs to write and sing!
Wrote a final verse in the memory of Guy’s passing. The greatest poet and purveyor of sonic prose that Texas ever birthed: Well he got good weather, He was light as feather, as he jumped into the air. Flying high, Caressed the sky, As he climbed eternal stairs. Well they laid him down, Into the ground, With that old flour sack cape. He passed the test, He flew the best, So we laid that cape to rest.
I am thinking of leaving illinois where I'd worked my whole life; to go to New Mexico (now that I'm retired). This song will be like a prayer to me as I head out on that long journey, alone, in my car. Ya gotta always just trust your cape ...
Can't believe I hadn't heard this song before the Kelce documentary!! This is now my go-to song when the world gets me down. Always brings me back up....
When my younger brother was 8, he actually jumped off of the garage with his cape on. I still send this to him every year. He is also dyslexic, so he didn't do so well in school. Life was a leap of faith for him. I got a college degree. He didn't... And is now making twice my salary.
Little did I know in 1967, at the Old Quarters in Houston that I had the privilege to get to know Guy Clark, listening to his songs and sharing joints.
Yup - exactly - that's the "craft" of being a good story teller. The listener is directly involved in making the picture. It isn't a "recital" it's a dialogue.
Such an incredible artist and unfortunately not as well known as he should be. If this is your first time hearing Guy search out his music. He was one of the best Texas has given us. Rip Guy.
I'm getting married in a week and have had flour sack capes made for each other. At the end of the ceremony we are going to tie our's on and play this song with our "leap of faith'. Our capes represent God's hand on our shoulders how can't get more trustworthy than that. Thank you Guy RIP.
When i was 6 or 7, I tied rope to the corners of a bedsheet that I figured was a parachute. I climbed up in the backyard tree and jumped. I'm still jumpin...
I did too. Then I would ride my hobby horse around the backyard and climb up on the wal and jump off the see if I could fly with my Cape May Guy be at peace in rest.
I met Guy at Swing City Music when I was a kid. He gave me a ten second lesson on how to Travis pick. Said it would change the way I played forever. He was right. Sat down and learned this one today, I had never heard it before last week. He's still teaching. Thanks Guy.
I don't where I was when he was there Prolly lost on the highway , drove trk , listening to 8 tracks . Off the bargain rack . Not knowing what new . Now I love them Texas songwriters . Way much .
Guy Clark, like his compadre, Townes van Zandt, was a true song poet! Glad I got to hear him in person more than a few times when he came to the NYC area, the Bottom Line and the Lone Star Cafe ...one of those great singer songwriters, traveling Texas troubadours. Ya gotta love those Texas troubadours...Joe Ely, Guy Clark, Butch Hancock, Jimmie Dale Gilmour...I could go on...like a Texas highway...forever and forever.
Kelce, a name that will go down into history as the greatest brother duo in sports to ever live. With that said, is there really a song more fitting for the Sexy Batman and his Philly green cape.
I'm watching this with tears in my eyes. So simple, sweet, and soulful. I had literally discovered Guy Clark like a month ago. If anything good comes from losing these wonderful musicians, it might be the younger generation learning about them all over again.
Thank you for this very meaningful look at life [ Don't tell anybody but I still have my cape and I still trust it ] I'm 48 and still a kid and love It
I play this wonderful song to remember a certain day, and an event, regarding my youngest son, who was then age 7. It's a true story, all the way and to this day. (love you, kiddo.) ( yer mom)
When I was about six years old I had a red cape my mamma made for me. I was Superman. So I figured I could fly. I jumped off the garage but had just enough doubt to jump feet first. I never tried again. Thanks Guy for a memory. You’re missed.
Tears at the loss of this great one. I haven''t seen this version before. I suspect it's fairly recent. Interesting that he wrote this song so many years ago (1975) and here he is singing it with every bit as much commitment to the truth, as if he'd written it with the life experience he had at the time of this performance.
I got to ask, where did you hear that it was written in 75? I cant find that anywhere. If its true, then Im wondering why did he wait til the 90s to release it
I found Guy Clark in the mid 70s and have held him in my heart forever. I turn on people that I feel would appreciate him. The one that do are so appreciative the ones that dont just need more time. His music is absolutely timeless.
Made me tear up halfway through the first verse and I like to think of myself as pretty hard-nosed. How did he create something that can cut through thick armor like a hot knife through butter. It's a marvel. Thank you!
I've been influenced by Guy for 33 years. Sometimes he gave me enough courage to almost get myself in trouble! He was so fun to hang with. We found out just talking one evening that we lived across the street from each other when we were just little kids in Monahans, TX.
My mother told me this song reminds her of me and the first time I heard it I had tears in my eyes, never guess what you’re doing, in the moment is the best way to live, no regrets.
Me and my uncle and my brother sang this song in my uncles truck and recorded it on the way back from hunting. My uncle passed away when he was 49 Rip Rhett Sease Bickley Jr
I see this and "Die Tryin'" as companion pieces that I try and come back to every so often to try and remind me to take more chances. I've been playing it safe too long.
Greatest of the greats had the good fortune to see him and Verlan in Park City Utah at the Egyptian, amazing man, I cried when he passed , they don't make em like him anymore.
What a prolific songwriter !! Guy Clark is my all time favorite ! Never give up on your dreams ! Never give up on hope ! Keep on chasing that dream !! RIP my friend......
I first heard this song listening to Jerry Jeff Walker and it led me to Guy Clark. Guy wrote many great songs my three favorites are Bag of Bones, Stuff That Works and Anyhow,I Love You.
this song always makes my both happy and sad. and the first time i heard it live iwas in tears.it is my very favorite song ,no song ever captured the human condition better.
My late wife and I had his song a coat from the cold as our wedding song. Yes as a mater of fact we are weird but now my coat is gone now. His Susan is gone too they kept each other warm for along time. I hope he can keep writing it took me a long time.
David Winter David- I am a guitarist/singer and I actually know Guy a little from Houston in the mid-60's. I was best man at a wedding (actually I stood up for the bride----but I'd hate to call myself the maid of honor.) I was asked to do two songs for the ceremony. One was the classic John Denver/Placido Domino tune "Perhaps Love," the other was "A Coat From the Cold." The congregation was not familiar with Guy's music and thought I'd written it. I corrected them of course. However, in the 30 years since I did that tune it has been brought up many times at gatherings. Great choice in songs. Sorry for your loss.
I saw Guy Clark on Austin City Limits in 1989. I was entranced but I never heard him again."Stuff that works" was played on the movie "The Rookie" In 2002. All of his songs are so rich in the things that make life worth living. I have carried his tunes to some of the worst places on earth. Serbia, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. In the Greek and Roman philosophy one could earn immortality through great works. You sir would live forever, thank you Mr. Clark, I love your music.
I got turned on to this song when I heard Eric Bibb's cover on Sirius XM a few weeks ago. It resonates with me on so many levels. Especially now. Things are pretty dicey for me at work. The company I work for has had 4 different corporate owners in the last 2 years and our CEO just quit. I managed to survive several layoffs. But, God knows the job markets are not kind to people like me in their mid 50's. "He's one of those who knows that life is just a leap of faith spread you arms and hold your breath and always trust your cape." I gotta trust my cape
Thanks. Just this week I applied for a voluntary buy-out. The turmoil at my company continues unabated. I've simply had enough. I'll find out in a few days if they'll give it to me.
Another follow-up. I got the buy-out. I was out of work for 6 months. Things were looking very bleak for a while. It was a very depressing time. 6 Months ago I landed a contract job at a technology company. Two weeks after I started the new job, my wife left me. 4 months ago they hired me on a a permanent-full time employee. Now, I have a nice girlfriend and things are looking up! My life totally turned around in a few short months. I'm glad I trusted my cape!
1960HikerDude I'm a former paratrooper and this song resonates with me, I actually jumped off a garage with a garbage bag for a parachute when I was a kid
Came here after the Kelce documentary. Absolutely beautiful song.

Just heard this song for the 1st time while watching the Documentary on Jason Kelce. Great song!
Those kelces, what can't they do❤
Lol that's how I found it as well
Thank you Jason Kelce for introducing me to this song and this fabulous songwriter. I’m just saddened that I missed him until now.
Here because of Jason Kelce. For anyone else who found themselves here for the same reason, go check out John Prine. You're gonna love him. RIP John. Then check out the Avett Brothers. You're really gonna love them!
Love John Prine and Guy Clark. Let’s not forget Jesse Winchester and Billy Joe Shaver. Also check out Blaze Foley and Townes Van Zandt.
Thank you Jason Kelce for this amazing song. Made me emotional when watching the documentary.
"He did not know he could not fly, and so he did" Rest in peace to my idol.

I clicked on comments because I wanted to say exactly the same thing, but you way beat me to it. Yes, RIP Guy, and I hope wherever he is it's a kitchen table in a well-worn house and there's just folks sitting together singing.
WOW
I've heard that God has many mansions.

Such a powerful little sentence that
Wrote a final verse in the memory of Guy’s passing. The greatest poet and purveyor of sonic prose that Texas ever birthed:
Well he got good weather,
He was light as feather,
as he jumped into the air.
Flying high,
Caressed the sky,
As he climbed eternal stairs.
Well they laid him down,
Into the ground,
With that old flour sack cape.
He passed the test,
He flew the best,
So we laid that cape to rest.
This is so great
Awesome....will add it to my doin's! Thanks!
I know in my heart that Guy flew. I HAVE to believe in that much in this world.
Brilliant very good job I really enjoyed that!
Whoa! That’s heavy, and absolutely perfect for the song. Guy would be proud! Big props!
I am thinking of leaving illinois where I'd worked my whole life; to go to New Mexico (now that I'm retired). This song will be like a prayer to me as I head out on that long journey, alone, in my car. Ya gotta always just trust your cape ...
Geez Louise - you'll get to where you're going, good sister. That's right - spread your arms and hold your breath, and always trust your cape.
Did you make it to New Mexico?
I stayed here (Chicago) the winter. I hope to be out west with my soul soon.
Thank you, stranger, for your welcoming support. thanks a lot.
I didn't get your message right away for some reason, but just got it now. Thanks Susan !
We are all in this together. Thanks for your sisterhood.
It sounds like a very exciting life journey. Listening to great tunes heading out west : )

Simply Amazing beautiful song
Obligational thanks to Jason kelce and his awesome documentary for bringing me to this song.
When my younger brother was 8, he actually jumped off of the garage with his cape on. I still send this to him every year.
He is also dyslexic, so he didn't do so well in school. Life was a leap of faith for him. I got a college degree. He didn't... And is now making twice my salary.

I guess you a,so got the chance to hear Townes.
Is the Old Quarters gone? I imagine it is.
@@written12 Last time I was in Houston, I couldn’t find it. Yeah it’s gone.
I prefer listen to guys like Guy Clark, they tell a thousand page book in four minutes.
Just imagine the rest, that's enough for me.
Yup - exactly - that's the "craft" of being a good story teller. The listener is directly involved in making the picture. It isn't a "recital" it's a dialogue.
Best comment I’ve ever seen on TH-cam
So well said.
My favorite songwriter for half a century. I cried when I heard of his passing. Somewhere, he's flying now.
Thank you, Jason kelce for bringing attention to this song and for all that you have done for Philadelphia.
Wonderful song!! Heard this song on the documentary “ Kelce”
I am a hang glider pilot and recently heard this song for the first time. It brought tears to my eyes! Amazing song, thanks Guy.
I'm a skydiver / base jumper and absolutely ditto. Tears on my cheeks as I write this.
Guy's music over his entire life touched my soul. West Texas put a mark on this man, always trust your cape.
My husband is paraglider and I cried listening to it. It it so him

Hello how are you doing my friend
Heavy hearts this morning. Thank you for crossing into my orbit, Guy. My life is better for it.
I so loved your comment, Rikki. Very nicely put.
Glad this song is getting more recognition. I've been listening for years but the Kelce doc made it more popular.
Never been a huge fan of country/folk but have always loved townes and guy clark. Such great writers and they put their heart into every word. RIP
They are in a class all there own
@@bendershome4discountorphan859 I should mention Blaze Foley as well
Apparently God is planning an epic concert soon as we have lost another legend
yes he is!

Kelce, a name that will go down into history as the greatest brother duo in sports to ever live. With that said, is there really a song more fitting for the Sexy Batman and his Philly green cape.
Gonna have to beat the Mannings, Boyers, Harbaughs, even the Williams sisters first. Ain't gonna happen.
19yrs ago....and still have this Song Playing in my Mind.......
Thank God.....I Wouldn't want anything less.
Hello
I'm watching this with tears in my eyes. So simple, sweet, and soulful. I had literally discovered Guy Clark like a month ago. If anything good comes from losing these wonderful musicians, it might be the younger generation learning about them all over again.
My son is getting married next month and this is the song I chose for our mother son dance.
