Barry Sanders will always be number one. He wasn't injured, he didn't have contract disputes. He was on top of his game and called it quits. Andrew luck was no surprise. He was always injured, beat up , so like I said no surprise. I knew he was going to retire early. How he did it was the only thing that was surprising.

Crouch was a QB, who made it very clear he had no interest in playing another position, yet the Rams drafted him to play WR. So he retired in his first training camp.

Barry Sanders sounds legit. I think his guilty conscience of playing for the Lions plus the passing of Walter Payton was too much for poor Barry. Walter was probably undoubtedly the inspiration for Barry in his career. Had Barry played for a team OTHER than the Lions, he would have won at least one Super Bowl and perhaps more.
Gale Sayers for the Bears. Too many injuries limited poor Gale's playing time. Had he stayed healthy, it may be possible that Gale would be the NFL's greatest rusher and not Walter Payton. We may just never know.
Dick Butkus for the Bears. He may have retired in his prime because of one player that he made a tackle on when the Bears were playing the Lions in Detroit in 1971. Chuck Hughes from the Lions was that player. Dick made the tackle on Chuck when the Lions made an offensive play, but then poor Chuck never got up from the field. It was revealed that Chuck had a fatal cardiac arrest soon after he was tackled. Dick was never the same man thereafter, and the Bears were devastated even after their victory over the Lions. There was no mood for any kind of victory celebration back in Chicago. It was much more worse over in Detroit to say the least.
