@@shed_timeWalnut is extremely expensive in the States. Good comparison is cherry. Walnut is roughly 14-16 USD per board foot. Cherry is 3-4 USD. When people get a deal on walnut they tell all their friends. We do have very large quantities of species that grow within quad-state area. Minnesota where I am, absurd amounts of different oaks, cherry, maple, ash, elm.
Wood working is a hobby for me and I started out in a shed literally half the size of the one you have - nearly 50 years ago. My current workshop is a 30' x 40' Barn that I built myself and has a Soil-cement floor. I currently light my workshop with 12v Car LED Headlights which give me awesome amounts of illumination at a very cheap price. I insulated my Barn with natural fibre panels (at large expense) and heat it with two Diesel Heaters (12v) which are fuelled by the Bio-Diesel I produce.
My shop in Ohio is 24' x 32' and I am constantly looking for ways to optimize tool layout and storage. Having everything on mobile bases is essential. I also heavily utilize every square inch of wall space for tool and material storage. I' ve got a 52“ SawStop cabinet saw, 8" long-bed jointer, a full-size lathe, and a 4' x 4' CNC that eat up a ton of floor space. As you know, unfortunately one needs space around the tools in order to use them. I feel like you have really achieved a lot of functionality from that space and with the tools you have. Well done!

Your space sounds great and I hear you on being able to walk around things. I really want a CNC but there's no way I could fit it in at the moment, thought about some sort of folding bed but will bide my time until I have a bigger space.

I procrastinated for well over a year before creating this channel, worried about nobody watching, or my videos not being good enough or dealing with the negative comments. This was really helpful, I'm building a shed/workshop around the same size currently and will use some of these tips especially the wheels on everything and look into that little evolution vac too.
lol, alas their use case is far more boring than what I think you're thinking...they were originally for a sliding camera rig but need a bit of development, so currently pondering whether to keep it up there or take them down and repurpose into a slab flattening jig.

Hi Andrew, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I hear you, the inside of the shed is 2.1m wide and the amount of times I've carefully shimmied round the table saw only to bang my head on the lumber rack makes me wish for a couple of extra feet in space.
New sub. Very organised. In my 10x12 shed I have a lathe, table saw, pillar drill, bandsaw, sanding station, thicknesser planer, mitre saw (shelved) scroll saw (shelved) and work space/bench all on wheels and a million pieces of reclaimed wood!!
That's impressive @smilertiler1! I'm currently trying to figure out how to make space for a planer thicknesser, toying with a flip top cart approach...
Nice shed, was hoping you were going to explain what the two metal lengths are on the roof which run parallel down the length of the shed. Are they for some sort of lift ? Very interested if you can advise, many thanks.
Hi Barry, thanks for watching. Yes, lots of people have asked me about those - I should have mentioned them. They are two linear rails that were originally intended for a sliding camera rig to help me shoot my videos, the idea being I'd mount my camera on a slider that is suspended from the rails so I could move it up and down the shed and get various shots of me working. Version 1 wasn't that successful; I shoot on a Sony A7III with a monitor and mic mounted to it which was a bit heavy and so unstable. I think it's got potential but I have to redesign it...or take them down and make a flattening jig out of them!
Many thanks for the video. Hope one day to build a similar sized shed - with concrete pad outside as a temporary overflow area. Interesting to see how everything fits . . . for you! I need to throw away some tool packaging to optimise space usage. Like the way it is very focused

I have some things on wheels but I do find myself spending half the day moving things to make room for what I’m working on at that moment. one reccomendation i would have is to upgrade your saw blades that come with the tools to a good brand like diablo or forest, you will be impressed with how much better your cut quality is. a friend had a dewalt tracksaw and i wasnt too keen on the stock blade supplied, i told him about this and he is very pleased with the upgrade, i also want to reccomend the camvac dust extractors for small spaces, denis from the hooked on wood channel has a good video about them when you step up to bigger machines that need more .i built a small carport type space next to my shop where i use sawhorses and a homemade mft top for cutting larger sheets down and doing messy jobs like routing, cheers for the tour from someone else with a small shed workshop.
Thanks for the advice Kevin! I just had a look at the camvac extractors and they look interesting, I think you're right, they could be a good option. Also agree on the blades, I do have a Freud blade to put on my mitre saw but need to look into one for the table saw, I'll check out the diablo and forest ones. Appreciate the recommendations :-)

Love the shed! A nice relatable sized shed for us UK folk! What are the rails for attached to your ceiling? Also, I’ve got the same table saw as you. Do you ever use it for dado cuts? I bought the CMT grooving blade (which is excellent by the way) but the saw constantly drops in height having no locking device for blade height. Drives me mad as you can’t dial in any cut depth.
Ooh I didn't know about the CMT grooving blade - I'm going to check that out. I wonder what's causing it to drop...just the forces at play I guess? I have used the table saw to cut dado's a few times (it just has the standard blade on it) and it's not ideal - takes ages and doesn't cut flat so requires some tidy up afterwards. I was thinking about making a dado jig for my router soon which will speed things up. Those linear rails you can see were originally for a sliding camera rig, the idea being I could hang my camera from them and move it up and down the shed to get the right shot, also removing the room the tripod takes up on the floor. It worked pretty well actually but needs a bit of a rethink so I'm just deciding if I build a version 2 of the rig or take it down and make a slab flattening jig out of it!
Great video and love the slightly eccentric and excitement about the various tools and stuff. “Proper” woodworkers need to be a bit eccentric. Great video, I have a very similar size shed and set up (work in progress). A few things..I use to keep all my sundries in similar storage cases but found it a massive pain to get out, find a flat surface, open lid etc. got myself 2 wall mounted storage units (£20 quid in Homebase) each one holds circa 40 abs plastic removable trays. check them out honestly they have been a game changer for me. Also been looking at the same compressor do you have a Brad nailer set up with it also ?

I might have a go a 3d printing some actually... I've not got a brad nailer hooked up to the compressor yet but I'm thinking about it. I'm actually looking at building a very similar sized shed as yours, maybe slightly narrower as my back garden isn't so big. I'm pretty certain I can squeeze in a 4800x1800, or 16x6ft.
Nice, go as big as you can! I'd originally intended for this to be a bit wider but when I marked it out it was taking up to much space as my garden is relatively narrow...wish I'd stuck with the plan to be honest!

Yes the vents are absolutely an intended design feature. Ok, that's not true, I used really old reclaimed wood for those bits and over time it has shrunk and warped to the point where the gaps are considerable! I'll be replacing them soon in time for autumn, mainly to keep the spiders out :-)

I'd have made it bigger if I could but I have a narrow-ish garden so thats all I was allowed! I'm based just outside of Newbury in Berkshire - where about are you?
Hi @elvisoshaughnessy4109 - Just some 22mm MDF on the inside. I'd say it's sound treated rather than soundproof but the thick MDF does a decent job. I also have some sound treatment on the roof but I doubt this does much to keep the sound in, it's just to stop the echoes for the videos.
Hi Jon, thanks for watching - 2.4m is the external width, the internal width of the Shed is 2.1m. I did shoot this with a wide lens so there might be a bit of that going on :-)

I love how organized you are in your shop! That's one thing I really need to work on 😂... what do you use to shoot your videos? It has quite a wide shot, I use an insta 360 x3
It doesn't always look like this I assure you! I shoot my videos on a Sony a7iii, usually with the Sony 24m F1.4GM lens, although this one was shot with the Tamron 17-50 F4 mostly at 17mm so I could get as much in the frame as possible. I have also tried using my iphone 13pro max but matching the colours with the Sony takes too long! I did think about getting a GoPro or an Insta360 too but multiple cameras is too much to think about - it takes me long enough to make a video using just one camera lol
@shed_time thanx Adam... im still tryna figure it out day by day.. this was a challenging video, first time making a 30 minute video... lots of stuff involved... these big projects are tough when it comes to editing
@shed_time nice... I love the footage, very crisp and wide .. I just started out with the 360, im getting used to it now, I mostly do the time-lapse, uses less memory and with nice 8k footage

Very tidy. If you saw my garage / work shop you’d have a nightmare. Condensation. Leaking roof water coming through the walls on floor area. I’ve just about given up. With it.
Sounds a bit like my house Michael...I've got leaky roof windows that I need to fix asap. Also, if it's any consolation the windows to my shed also leak when it rains hard. The windows are the weakest part of my shed build, I just threw anything in to make it water tight and they need to be replaced soon. one job at a time eh...

I got all the gear…and no space to set it up properly in my small 11x8 ft spare bedroom (now workroom). To be squeezed in so far….8’ bench, 6’ bench, table saw, band saw, bench pillar drill, 13 DeWalt power tools, fire brick brazing hearth, Dremel station, large roller tool box and 16 stacking pull out bins plus more. It has become a nightmare, I can’t move or set things up properly. I don’t think I could make shed much bigger. My large sheet stock is set against the wall in the passage way outside the room. American YT’ers seem to have plenty of land, enough to build huge 40 foot square barn sized workshops….Most UK properties by comparison are tiny.
Wow, that is a lot of stuff! I'm not sure how you'd create some more space other than streamlining your tools to the essentials?? Depends on what you like to make I guess...
Can you utilise your loft as another workspace? Adam's shed does look smaller than 14'x8' though. More detail on your linking of the Dewalt and Evolution gave would be interesting please. Has the Evolution got a finer filter? Seems odd to link them and now need the Evo.
@@christianwithers7335 The little EVO has an L-Class cartridge filter in it. The Dewalt cyclone dust collector just serves as a separator and gives me some extra capacity really as the evo is only 15L
I'd be weary of working in so small spaces with large pieces of wood. I've done jobs in offices inside retail storefronts or office buildings where you couldn't even turn around a piece of furniture without moving it out of the room first turning it around and putting it back in I would think just turning a 4x8 sheet of plywood around in an area like that would be a problem You don't have a lot of swing space
Yeah, I definitely couldn't swing a full sheet of ply around! With large sheet good I either need to get them cut down in store or I'll rip them down with the circular saw outside.
American TH-camr shops aren’t representative of what almost all of us have. Wide angle lenses can make any shop look bigger. I’m in an average sized American home with three car garage. My shop is still small because of cars, lawn mower, snow blower, bicycles, Christmas tree, and some junk in garage. I use one stall for shop. Even then the occasional grill or junk invades that space. My shop is the same size as yours but I have 9 foot ceilings. There are far more homes with only one or two car garages. I’m just in a development that was built around 2005 when that was a strong trend. Newer neighborhoods are back to mostly two car garages now. It is a laugh seeing people who have trucks and cannot park them in their garages because newer garages are shrinking. Both stub, sides, and depth to park have been shrinking last decade here.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. I was in Austin recently for work (my first time in America - loved it) and I couldn't believe the size of some of the trucks. We do have pick ups over here but baby ones in comparison!
@@shed_time Those trucks are expensive too. Poor gas mileage. No idea how people afford. Small trucks like Ford Maverick are selling well and I hope trucks start shrinking. There are some photos of trucks next to each other comparing bed length. It’s wild. Hood height is also out of control. Can’t see anything in front of those huge trucks.

Hi Adam, I just binged all your videos. Like the tour, I know how hard it is to store everything, I only have a 9' by 6' shed. With my two benches, I built & and shelving, I'm very limited in space. Top marks for putting yourself out on TH-cam.
Hi Andrew, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I hear you, the inside of the shed is 2.1m wide and the amount of times I've carefully shimmied round the table saw only to bang my head on the lumber rack makes me wish for a couple of extra feet in space.

New sub. Very organised. In my 10x12 shed I have a lathe, table saw, pillar drill, bandsaw, sanding station, thicknesser planer, mitre saw (shelved) scroll saw (shelved) and work space/bench all on wheels and a million pieces of reclaimed wood!!
That's impressive @smilertiler1! I'm currently trying to figure out how to make space for a planer thicknesser, toying with a flip top cart approach...

Nice shed, was hoping you were going to explain what the two metal lengths are on the roof which run parallel down the length of the shed. Are they for some sort of lift ? Very interested if you can advise, many thanks.
Hi Barry, thanks for watching. Yes, lots of people have asked me about those - I should have mentioned them. They are two linear rails that were originally intended for a sliding camera rig to help me shoot my videos, the idea being I'd mount my camera on a slider that is suspended from the rails so I could move it up and down the shed and get various shots of me working. Version 1 wasn't that successful; I shoot on a Sony A7III with a monitor and mic mounted to it which was a bit heavy and so unstable. I think it's got potential but I have to redesign it...or take them down and make a flattening jig out of them!

Great shed tour and a lovely shed. Has inspired me to sort out my small work space. I have some things on wheels but I do find myself spending half the day moving things to make room for what I’m working on at that moment. I have known about French cleats for donkeys years (I’m old) but never got around to building some.. time to change that.

one reccomendation i would have is to upgrade your saw blades that come with the tools to a good brand like diablo or forest, you will be impressed with how much better your cut quality is. a friend had a dewalt tracksaw and i wasnt too keen on the stock blade supplied, i told him about this and he is very pleased with the upgrade, i also want to reccomend the camvac dust extractors for small spaces, denis from the hooked on wood channel has a good video about them when you step up to bigger machines that need more .i built a small carport type space next to my shop where i use sawhorses and a homemade mft top for cutting larger sheets down and doing messy jobs like routing, cheers for the tour from someone else with a small shed workshop.
Thanks for the advice Kevin! I just had a look at the camvac extractors and they look interesting, I think you're right, they could be a good option.
Also agree on the blades, I do have a Freud blade to put on my mitre saw but need to look into one for the table saw, I'll check out the diablo and forest ones. Appreciate the recommendations :-)

Love the shed! A nice relatable sized shed for us UK folk! What are the rails for attached to your ceiling? Also, I’ve got the same table saw as you. Do you ever use it for dado cuts? I bought the CMT grooving blade (which is excellent by the way) but the saw constantly drops in height having no locking device for blade height. Drives me mad as you can’t dial in any cut depth.
Ooh I didn't know about the CMT grooving blade - I'm going to check that out. I wonder what's causing it to drop...just the forces at play I guess? I have used the table saw to cut dado's a few times (it just has the standard blade on it) and it's not ideal - takes ages and doesn't cut flat so requires some tidy up afterwards. I was thinking about making a dado jig for my router soon which will speed things up.
Those linear rails you can see were originally for a sliding camera rig, the idea being I could hang my camera from them and move it up and down the shed to get the right shot, also removing the room the tripod takes up on the floor. It worked pretty well actually but needs a bit of a rethink so I'm just deciding if I build a version 2 of the rig or take it down and make a slab flattening jig out of it!
Great video and love the slightly eccentric and excitement about the various tools and stuff. “Proper” woodworkers need to be a bit eccentric. Great video, I have a very similar size shed and set up (work in progress). A few things..I use to keep all my sundries in similar storage cases but found it a massive pain to get out, find a flat surface, open lid etc. got myself 2 wall mounted storage units (£20 quid in Homebase) each one holds circa 40 abs plastic removable trays. check them out honestly they have been a game changer for me.
Also been looking at the same compressor do you have a Brad nailer set up with it also ?

I've not got a brad nailer hooked up to the compressor yet but I'm thinking about it. I've got a battery powered WORX brad nailer which is great but it's quite heavy, so I might copy Peter Millards set up and get a cheap 18g silverline gun. Thanks @manxvibes32. I did forget to talk about the linear rails! They were originally for a camera rig to slide my camera up and down the shed whilst filming but I couldn't get it to work that well so it needs a rethink. I might take them down and use them for a slab flattening jig.

I'm actually looking at building a very similar sized shed as yours, maybe slightly narrower as my back garden isn't so big. I'm pretty certain I can squeeze in a 4800x1800, or 16x6ft.
Nice, go as big as you can! I'd originally intended for this to be a bit wider but when I marked it out it was taking up to much space as my garden is relatively narrow...wish I'd stuck with the plan to be honest!

I must go tidy my shed. are the vents in the doors by design? I'd be worried about it getting damp in there.
Yes the vents are absolutely an intended design feature. Ok, that's not true, I used really old reclaimed wood for those bits and over time it has shrunk and warped to the point where the gaps are considerable! I'll be replacing them soon in time for autumn, mainly to keep the spiders out :-)

I'd have made it bigger if I could but I have a narrow-ish garden so thats all I was allowed! I'm based just outside of Newbury in Berkshire - where about are you?

Hi @elvisoshaughnessy4109 - Just some 22mm MDF on the inside. I'd say it's sound treated rather than soundproof but the thick MDF does a decent job. I also have some sound treatment on the roof but I doubt this does much to keep the sound in, it's just to stop the echoes for the videos.
Great shed however, can you clarify the internal width please as it looks way less than 2.4m wide. Is it just the camera lying? Thanks. 👍🏻
Hi Jon, thanks for watching - 2.4m is the external width, the internal width of the Shed is 2.1m. I did shoot this with a wide lens so there might be a bit of that going on :-)

I love how organized you are in your shop! That's one thing I really need to work on 😂... what do you use to shoot your videos? It has quite a wide shot, I use an insta 360 x3
It doesn't always look like this I assure you! I shoot my videos on a Sony a7iii, usually with the Sony 24m F1.4GM lens, although this one was shot with the Tamron 17-50 F4 mostly at 17mm so I could get as much in the frame as possible. I have also tried using my iphone 13pro max but matching the colours with the Sony takes too long! I did think about getting a GoPro or an Insta360 too but multiple cameras is too much to think about - it takes me long enough to make a video using just one camera lol
by the way, just watched your pool table build - nice editing, liking the transitions! The insta 360 footage looks good :-)
@shed_time thanx Adam... im still tryna figure it out day by day.. this was a challenging video, first time making a 30 minute video... lots of stuff involved... these big projects are tough when it comes to editing
@shed_time nice... I love the footage, very crisp and wide .. I just started out with the 360, im getting used to it now, I mostly do the time-lapse, uses less memory and with nice 8k footage

Very tidy. If you saw my garage / work shop you’d have a nightmare. Condensation. Leaking roof water coming through the walls on floor area. I’ve just about given up. With it.
Sounds a bit like my house Michael...I've got leaky roof windows that I need to fix asap. Also, if it's any consolation the windows to my shed also leak when it rains hard. The windows are the weakest part of my shed build, I just threw anything in to make it water tight and they need to be replaced soon. one job at a time eh...

I got all the gear…and no space to set it up properly in my small 11x8 ft spare bedroom (now workroom). To be squeezed in so far….8’ bench, 6’ bench, table saw, band saw, bench pillar drill, 13 DeWalt power tools, fire brick brazing hearth, Dremel station, large roller tool box and 16 stacking pull out bins plus more. It has become a nightmare, I can’t move or set things up properly. I don’t think I could make shed much bigger. My large sheet stock is set against the wall in the passage way outside the room.
American YT’ers seem to have plenty of land, enough to build huge 40 foot square barn sized workshops….Most UK properties by comparison are tiny.
Wow, that is a lot of stuff! I'm not sure how you'd create some more space other than streamlining your tools to the essentials?? Depends on what you like to make I guess...
Can you utilise your loft as another workspace? Adam's shed does look smaller than 14'x8' though. More detail on your linking of the Dewalt and Evolution gave would be interesting please. Has the Evolution got a finer filter? Seems odd to link them and now need the Evo.
@@christianwithers7335 The little EVO has an L-Class cartridge filter in it. The Dewalt cyclone dust collector just serves as a separator and gives me some extra capacity really as the evo is only 15L
I'd be weary of working in so small spaces with large pieces of wood. I've done jobs in offices inside retail storefronts or office buildings where you couldn't even turn around a piece of furniture without moving it out of the room first turning it around and putting it back in I would think just turning a 4x8 sheet of plywood around in an area like that would be a problem You don't have a lot of swing space
Yeah, I definitely couldn't swing a full sheet of ply around! With large sheet good I either need to get them cut down in store or I'll rip them down with the circular saw outside.
You don't actually have to bury SWA cables

American TH-camr shops aren’t representative of what almost all of us have. Wide angle lenses can make any shop look bigger.
I’m in an average sized American home with three car garage. My shop is still small because of cars, lawn mower, snow blower, bicycles, Christmas tree, and some junk in garage. I use one stall for shop. Even then the occasional grill or junk invades that space.
My shop is the same size as yours but I have 9 foot ceilings. There are far more homes with only one or two car garages. I’m just in a development that was built around 2005 when that was a strong trend. Newer neighborhoods are back to mostly two car garages now.
It is a laugh seeing people who have trucks and cannot park them in their garages because newer garages are shrinking. Both stub, sides, and depth to park have been shrinking last decade here.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. I was in Austin recently for work (my first time in America - loved it) and I couldn't believe the size of some of the trucks. We do have pick ups over here but baby ones in comparison!
@@shed_time Those trucks are expensive too. Poor gas mileage. No idea how people afford. Small trucks like Ford Maverick are selling well and I hope trucks start shrinking. There are some photos of trucks next to each other comparing bed length. It’s wild. Hood height is also out of control. Can’t see anything in front of those huge trucks.
And the trucks keep getting bigger!
