    I was like "this guys making it look way too easy. Watch me royally screw this up". Not only did I not royally screw it up, I finished in about 10 minutes. So much easier than I thought it was going to be. I thought I was going to have to take the whole assembly out. Man I'm glad I kept searching for more videos. You're a life saver. Thanks a ton!

    11/11/17 - Your video is still helping people today :)
    Advice for other amateur mechanics:
    - Open the bonnet/hood and position a flashlight in a place to light up the area you're working on. The hardest part about this job is not being able to see anything and this way frees up both hands.
    - Turn the wheels full lock to the right for the left side bulb or vise versa to give you more space to work with.

      Or pull the whole tire. A little more time, a little more work, a lot less profanity. And probably less time and work. Just remember to torque the wheel back on.

    As a person who knows nothing about cars, I tried this filled with an arrogance only watching TH-cam tutorials can give one. Despite it taking about 7 times as long as it took this person I was able to complete it.
    Wish I had known that it is twice as easy with your wheels cut in the opposite direction. I also recommend the little tool you use to open paint cans and a thimble. This video doesn't show how much fun it is to get that wire clasp back on.
    Thanks for the video, saved me some money for sure!

    This was extremely helpful, and turned out to be easier than i thought. I ended up breaking my pop clip, and struggled with the screw until i rewatched this video and then let gravity drop it while i very gently turned it. After that, I was done in less than 5 minutes. In total, it probably took me like 30 minutes to wrestle with the pop clip and screw. Thanks!

    At the end of the video near 3:40 he says the fat tab should point at the engine, but that is not correct. The fat tab points up. Look closely at about 2:55 and you can see the orientation of the contacts before the bulb is removed, that center one is on the side with the fat tab when the bulb is out. Hopefully saves someone some fumbling in the dark.

    For whatever reason it was easier for me to line the bulb up properly looking at it through the front of the housing while reaching my hand back in there.
    On mine the orientation is slightly different, the large tab is at the very top. Be sure to check yours as you pull it out, or glance at the connector.
    Thanks for the video!

    One major edit to +ghostlyrich's method: remove the plastic rivet on the very bottom, forward side of the wheel well. That makes the plastic splash guard much easier to move aside. I did this on the passenger side (mirror of this video), so if looking at the passenger wheel as a clock, this video shows removal of hardware at about 2 o'clock and 12 o'clock. I am saying to remove another plastic rivet on the bottom at 4-5 o'clock (forward end of the wheel well). Another tip: jack up the side of the car you're working on to create more clearance between the tire and the work area (no need to remove the tire).

    If this method works for you then congrats, but my girlfriend tried this for 45 minutes before giving up on frustration. She showed me this video and I tried for 2 minutes before I just went through the engine bay and finished the whole job in 5 minutes.
    My problem with this method is that you can't have your arm under the wheel well and also see what you are doing whatsoever. It makes for some unnecessary frustration. If the only tool you own is a screwdriver then yeah do this I guess. Otherwise, you can just remove 2 bolts in the engine bay and have easy access to the rear of the headlamp assembly.

    Screw modern cars. The bulb is fastened in there with a retaining spring and a rubber gasket, yet the electronic harness just plugs right in without even needing to be twisted. They want you to take it to the dealer out of frustration, then charge you an hour of labor because they take the bumper off to remove the headlight :-p. The method shown works and is quick, but it's still annoying that you can't access the lamps from under the hood.

  • @jmarcusg
    @jmarcusg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks! Challenging, but got it done! The biggest take away from your video is to "GENTLY" unscrew those two retaining screws. A soft touch is all that's needed. Otherwise the screw head just spins...

  • @freitag314
    @freitag314 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I find it helpful to jack up the Fit and remove the wheel. A couple of extra minutes invested makes everything much easier to see and reach with the wheel out of the way. This is not a suggestion, this is just what I do. Jacking up a car can be dangerous.
    Compared to every car I've owned, even after removing the wheel, I find this task to be unnecessarily difficult. Changing the oil on my Fit is easier than changing the headlight bulb.Changing the headlight bulb requires good lighting, such as wearing a headlamp and employing a trouble light. Overall, I can't complain about this car. I have 268,000+ miles and no sign of slowing down. Also, the wide tab (among three) of the bulb should be oriented straight up, not to the right when installing the new bulb.

  • @harborcreative
    @harborcreative 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gotta admit I was frustrated at first. I couldn't get that 2nd screw off. I almost made an embarassing call to a car place to help me change a light bulb. After the third attempt, on my knees, in wetness, i used a thicker drill bit and it came off easier. The rest was a little tight but I finally made it "fit".

    Frankly, it is all but easy.I have my honda for already almost a decade and every time I do this it is a huge pain and frustration. Yesterday 1.5 hours of sweating and swearing. Problem is that the drivers side contains a lot of harnesses which makes it almost impossible to get the hand in, and remove the bulb easily. Those harnesses cannot be moved as they are attached to the frame, hence one needs surgery instruments and a huge amount of patience while doing it. In my case,I never managed to put the rubber cover back to place due to insufficient amount of space there. Where those guys put their heads when designing this car?

    • @dmpyron2
      @dmpyron2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My solution for PITAs like this is to get the car in the air and pull the tire. A pair of jack stands and a floor jack are almost mandatory for working on cars. Four stands is even better.

    • @tk1-tk2-tk3
      @tk1-tk2-tk3 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You must have been doing something seriously wrong. I just did this as a favor to someone (not my car) and it took like maybe 10 minutes. Granted I was changing the uppermost of the 3 bulbs, so it didn't involve messing with the bale wire clip of the main headlight. But you just remove a few of those plastic rivets, get your arm up in there, and do it. Headlamp helps. Also I jacked up that side to create more clearance between the tire and the work area.

    Changing a light bulb on a 2008 Honda Fit does NOT look super easy. In order to get to the bulb you have to detach the plastic shroud that is inside the fender? Goodness gracious. Honda engineers couldn't have made the job any harder if they tried. On many cars you can reach the back of the bulb with your hand without having to remove anything first. Though often there is barely enough room for your hand and sharp edges that are ready to cut it. And on some cars you have to remove even more stuff first. The hardest part of this job though may be putting the stupid spring-clip back on after you have replaced the bulb - and you neglected to show that part. At least Honda has the spring clip held down on one side. On some cars, the entire spring clip comes off - and then it can very easily fall down into some spot where it is hard to reach.

    Unless you have a child's palm you will have to dismantle the whole headlight as I have done. And the metal clip may get out of place if you try to take it out with a narrow forceps. Maybe the hedlight in my car was not original.

  • @therealjoshtodd
    @therealjoshtodd 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    wouldn't it be easier to just unbolt the headlight and pull it out and get to the back that way??

      never mind, i just found how to remove the headlight assembly and it's far more of a pain in the ass than it should be, so your method is probably the better way to go. My apologies.
