    I just bought a 21 KTM 250 sxf with 4.2 hrs for 5k. Thing was mint, not a scratch on it. Excel wheels. Full system fmf. New Mx33’s. Flo levers. Pro taper bars. Guy wanted 6800 and I told him I was looking for a bike for my son and don’t want to spend more than 5. And he said he would do it for 5 because he’s a parent and understands. Guy was really cool!

    That first tip is A #1. I just got a 2003 yz125, and it’s absolutely MINT. Talked to a ton of people, ended up liking the person with this bike and made the trip 2 hours away to go look at it. Pull up and there it is absolutely spotless, engine is frozen cold and starts on the first kick. Warm it up and rip up and down the street. Wide open feeling every gear, clean title in hand. Didn’t even try to negotiate, no work necessary, dude gave me a new set of tires to go with it. Even gave me new tires for my little brothers bike. Payed $2200 for it and compared to anything else on the market where I live in that price range I absolutely SCORED.

      Full disclosure, I got mine on Craigslist. I really had to search for it too. Everything I saw on Facebook marketplace was completely destroyed, not running, or had no title. The guy I bought mine from had a full history of the bike starting with the original owner. Definitely a lot to think about buying used.

    It's only been since 97 when I bought a new bike, and picked up a slightly used bike from a dealership in 2020 and it had a title. It is the first time I had a dirt bike with a title, as a title was only for legal road vehicles.
    When did we "have to" get a title for a off road bike?

    The 76 RM250 makes me a little leery because of the frame loop over the rear fender. Suzuki RMs didn't have that frame loop. It was there on the TS enduros.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is one thing about it. It looks to be a build from an enduro to a MX bike, or a MX bike to an enduro. I am going with the MX bike transferred into an enduro because that looks like the RM frame (sans the loop)/engine/pipe/forks/swing-arm with laid down shocks (enduro models did not have yet). It has the loop, and a kick stand that RM's also did not have. I think they were added to the RM, and there was no bigger tank for the woods at the time. :) I could be wrong, but it looks like a lot of good work either way. I do notice the channel says it would be a great nostalgic show bike. I don't think he knows how many old guys are racing vintage bikes. I am sure it has been sold.

  • @EarthSurferUSA

    The 2005 CR125 at min (10:40) looks like a fantastic deal to me, if you take into account only 20 hours on it with a better set of forks and other good things. A 125 set up for a 180lb rider is pretty sure to need lighter springs for the new lighter buyer (most likely), but if the bike is what the ad says, with the usual greasing and checking things, that thing is ready to ride (maybe a piston ring change to be safe, $100.00), for a season just like a new bike.
    I dig your channel and I can tell you have tons of experience with a great depth of knowledge. But on this, I don't think you pay enough attention to how old/used a bike may be.
    PS: I have seen the clutch cover on bikes get worn finish in 5 hours with a little mud in there. It mostly depends on how pidgin toed you are and how much you don't ride on your toes IMO. :)
    I think (if the ad is accurate), I would have trusted that bike before all the others. And since it is probably just as competitive as a new YZ125 or better,---go for it.
    But, since it has different triple clamps, you should find out how it may have changed the rake with a different offset. Reading Paul Thed's of Race Tech book. :)

    Number one rule for buying an older (10+ years) used dirt bike. Tear it down to the bare frame and replace every bearing and any rubber parts. Then rebuild the suspension, both ends. When it's completely apart you can find all the bad stuff. Eliminates surprises.

      @EarthSurferUSA 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "The financial collapse" you may be speaking of also means you won't have any money. A real economic collapse, (caused by collectivism policy every time), is more than just stocks going down, and us not noticing much if we don't own stock, (like 2008). It is the total (or almost total) devaluation of our buying power, our money.
      During the 1929 depression, our money was not worth much more than toilet paper, and the cheap "new" bikes will sit on the showroom floor behind locked doors.

      If it is a 2-stroke and you know how to fix it and able to get parts, they can be brought back to new condition, even if in bad shape, (everything, suspension top end including cylinder plating, bottom end all bearings/seals, tires, clutch, chain/sprockets, odds/ends.) for probably under another 2-grand.
      What better winter project could you have? Spring time? That bike will now be special to you, because you are part of it. :)

      In reality, what is a 125cc 2-stroke good for today? Still too fast for a entry level bike (it is a race bike,---still.), but can't compete with 250cc 4-strokes on these fast tracks today. It is totally a bad woods bike for anybody, while being too tall for anybody under 6 foot tall, (which is almost always too heavy for a 125).
      The EPA forced 4-stroke left this bike no where to compete or excel at. It can only be fairly competitive with other 125cc 2-strokes with the bikes left on the market.
      No 125 cc class for racing, too zingy for the woods. A dirt bike with out a home, with last years sitting on the floor with the lowest retail price in the big bike market.

    People think way too highly of their bikes. In my opinion, I'd rather pay $11K for a new bike than a year or two year old bike for $9K. I think the day a bike hits the dirt it loses 30%. I do think there's a point to where there's a minimum value for a bike (just like a 4x4) where if it's running, it's worth $X. With the price of used bikes skyrocketing, it's almost easier to buy new. I know there's deals out there but I just see way too many high priced bikes.

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      "People think way too highly of their bikes. In my opinion, I'd rather pay $11K for a new bike than a year or two year old bike for $9K."
      We don't understand how crazy that sounds compared to $5K for a big bore 2-stroke before the EPA forced the 4-stroke on the industry.
      And that 5G was elevated before, by the 1986 production rule. We don't understand that it is that kind of intervention of our industries that has raised the cost of a bike over 3 times what they should be. And we don't even wonder why the market share in the USA used to be at about 15 times larger per capita.
      I will stick with the 2-stroke YZ250. You can keep that bike pretty much mint for $500.00 year (if you ride 4-5 times a week), and add a few changes.
      You can keep that bike fresh, (no lack of parts, and more used out there than any bike), for a decade, for half the cost of what you are willing to spend on a new bike.
      But if you must have electric start,----that will cost you more than it is worth. :)

  • @EarthSurferUSA
    @EarthSurferUSA 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The 8.5 grand 2017 Honda (4:30) is probably worth that much more than a "same model" but 7 years older can mean much more wear and tear.
    With a lot of riding, a 2-stroke crank lasts about 3 seasons, (probably similar for a 4-stroke), and I don't even want to change one of those, let alone deal with all the other 4-stroke working parts. If we go by hours running and see good maintenance, that is different,----"if". Bottom line. If I am going to buy a 7-10 year old bike, I know I am going to dump money into it if I want to make it reliable and performing like new, (or better). I would much rather take my chances with a 10 year old YZ250 2-stroke, (note, I never thought I would consider a bike over 2 years old), and at worst case scenario, assume the cost of a 4-stroke top end rebuild for the next 3 years of riding a perfectly maintained/tuned bike.
    Looks like getting lazy on a 4-stroke, (both mechanically and riding technique), is costing you guys a lot of money.

    Why everyone wastes their time and money on two smokes is insane,man up 4stroke army

    • @EarthSurferUSA
      @EarthSurferUSA 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I can ride 4-5 days a week (as I did when younger), and maintain a 2-stroke during the Michigan 3 month winter for an average cost today of about $500.00/year, and come out in spring with a mint, (and usually more modified/changed) bike every year------for a decade or more with that one bike. $5 grand maintenance for 10 years, and the thrill of tuning your bike the way you like it, is so much more enjoyable, then letting the epa force a bike they want you to make and ride at our expense.
      Buying a EPA forced 4-stroke? You wasted a lot more than money, (freedom actually), and the industry has never been more unhealthy.
      We really should stop this new communism from taking over our industries that more free people built. Reject it, and go back to a 2-stroke.

  • @SoCalMisfit712

    Buying used is miserable. Most are 1500-2000 too much. The old 2 strokes are not worth 5000$. I picked up a kx100 that the dude told me the top end was changed every 20 hrs. I got it home and found the power valves were sticking. Top end came off and the piston had more than 20 hrs on it 😂. Had to re jet it it was a bummer. Kid got to see what goes into keeping a bike up but it really sucks buying used. Was looking for a 125 for him since he’s getting too big for the 100. Wound up just buying a new one from chaparral. I’m not paying 3000$ for a 20 year old cr125. These new 2 strokes have the latest and the greatest on them. They are expensive but I know what I’m getting for sure. I also don’t care that you can’t register it. I’m not paying 2000$ more for a bike that has a red sticker.

      When I was a 12 year old kid back in the mid 70's, (an on later), my paretns could ground me, but could not take my bike away and sell it. Why? Because we were able to buy new bikes with our own earned money, and our patents had enough morals to know that is something you earned is taken away, it is steeling. But the best sotry of that I know personally is a friend a few years older than me. He was 8 around 1968 and his mom would not buy him one, (dangerous), and he could not keep up to the older kids on his bicycle, so he put his own together in the garage. His Mother saw him riding it in the yard, (no brakes, string tied on the thumb for a throttle), and morally said to herself, "I can't take it from he. He made it!". Later he raced MX and got into Mt. Bikes, and started a die shop, inventing things along the way for 2 wheeled things.
      Today, he is a millionaire with a 60,000sq/ft factory he built making motorcycle parts, like all the gas tanks and fenders for Indian Motorcycles., and other customers. Very robotic for production and 35 employees. This is just a recreational industry for us, but tell me, what kind of people are the real hero's of our society?
      I say it is guys/gals like that guy. And all he was doing was following his dreams with action. I just defined our freedom. :)
